National 50, Simmonds Takes First Fifty!
Hayley Simmonds (velosport-PastaMontegrappa), 1:58:36, won the CTT 50 mile time trial championships at her first attempt at the distance. The 25 year old from Cambridge took the coveted title by a scant 41 seconds from Emily Robertson (Luton CC), 1:59:17. Robertson, also riding her first 50 had lead by just 2 seconds at half distance but as the wind began to rise Simmonds strength was the game changer. Bronwen Ewing (TrainSharp RT), 2:01:42,claimed the bronze medal. Ewing was backed up by Lynn Hamel & Karina Bowie to give the Trainsharp outfit the team award.The P418 Upton-Bere Regis course in Dorset is never going to produce super -fast times but concerns over a resurfaced section on the A35 were unfounded and when the forecasted torrential rain failed to appear it turned into a pretty good day!

“It was pretty tough, I did not quite know what to expect, and the wind picked up a little bit as well. I had an idea of what power to stick to and tried to hold a constant power, I tried to go out a little conservatively so that I could build up in the second half. It was a strong headwind at Roundhouse, being a bit of a bigger rider I thought right I am going to push it into the wind and managed to hold on to the end. I am not thinking about riding another 50 just yet. I thought it was going to be horrifically bad rain but in the end it was ok. I drove the new chipped section I knew it had been resurfaced but it was no problem, it had bedded down really well”
