South DC (p) Open Time Trials 2020

Short distance time trials fill the South DC 2020 race calendar with just two 50 mile events among the plethora of 10s and 25’s. The region hosts the opening round of the Sigma Sport Classic series in the New Forest in March, the National Youth Championship final in September and the National Closed Circuit Championships in October.

Canyon DHB p/b Soreen Announce 2020 Roster: 5 New Faces added!

TIM ELVERSON RECRUITS 5 NEW RIDERS FOR CANYON DHB p/b SOREEN
Tim Elverson has unveiled an 18-man squad who will ride in the colours of Canyon dhb p/b Soreen next season.

The owner and sports director has retained the services of thirteen members of this year's Canyon dhb p/b Bloor Homes line-up.

And he has added five new faces, among them an Australian and another Belgian, as he prepares for the UCI Continental team's fourth season.

Jacob Scott, Rob Scott, Alex Peters, Jérôme Baugnies and Brenton Jones have all signed up.

Re-signing are Alex Paton, Andrew Tennant, Thomas Stewart, Jacob Hennessy, Ryan Christensen, Matthew Bostock, Max Stedman, Alex Colman, Callum Macleod, Rory Townsend, Daniel Pearson, Oliver Wood and Charlie Tanfield.

Elverson said:

"2020 is going to be a great year. 70% of my squad is staying the same, so we should pick up where we left off and I think the five guys I’ve brought in will fit in well in terms of attitude and desire to win."

The 2020 squad, designed in Lego figures. Please credit @glorious.cc
Jacob Scott joins the team after a successful 2019 season with Swift Carbon Pro Cycling.

Rob Scott, former National U23 Road Championship winner, joins us from the now-defunct Wiggins Le Col, and is our youngest new rider on the squad.

Alex Peters, who formally rode for Team Sky, makes a return to racing in 2020 after leaving the sport in 2017.

Jérôme Baugnies, arrives from UCI Pro Continental team Wanty-Groupe Gobert, where he has been for the past six years.

Australian Brenton Jones comes from UCI Pro Continental team Delko Marseille Provence where he has been for the past two years. Prior to this he rode for JLT-Condor.

Elverson’s decision to recruit a couple of older riders may come as a surprise to some but he believes they will add an extra dimension to his team. He added:

"The average age is 24 which is slightly up from last year, but I believe the increased experience of Jérôme and Brenton will allow the other riders of similar style to learn and blossom.

"I also believe we have a few guys set to have a breakthrough year, so it's going to be a great season ahead."

Existing (13): Alex Paton, Andrew Tennant, Thomas Stewart, Jacob Hennessy, Ryan Christensen, Matthew Bostock, Max Stedman, Alex Colman, Callum Macleod, Rory Townsend, Daniel Pearson, Oliver Wood and Charlie Tanfield.

New (five): Jacob Scott, Rob Scott, Alex Peters, Jérôme Baugnies and Brenton Jones.

Soreen New Title Sponsor of Canyon DHB

TIM ELVERSON PRESENTS CANYON DHB POWERED BY SOREEN
Soreen is a new title sponsor of Canyon dhb.

Performance sports clothing brand dhb will continue their involvement in 2020, after joining forces with Tim Elverson's British UCI Continental squad in 2018. Canyon will also continue to support the team for a fourth year running.

Soreen is a new sponsor for 2020 and will support the team, based in Fleet, Hampshire, which will be known as Canyon dhb p/b Soreen from January 1.

Bloor Homes have been replaced on the team’s title. However they will continue to support the team for the coming season.

Eisberg, Hunt Bike Wheels, Maxxis, Roadwheel, PRO BIKE TOOL, Charters Peugeot, Precise Performance, Sidi, Stages Power, Hayden Brothers and Peaty's will also continue to back the team in 2020.

They all enjoyed a great ride in 2019, with a top 5 at the Tour de Yorkshire, the Tour Series crown for a second year running and the Eisberg sprints jersey in the Tour of Britain among the highlights.

Joining Canyon dhb p/b Soreen in 2020 is Hawkshead Brewery. Based in the heart of the Lake District, Hawkshead Brewery is a standalone craft brewery offering pale ales to dark stout and beer, and of course cyclist friendly 0.5% Hawkshead Lighter Times.

We welcome new partner LQD® Spray for the 2020 season. Endorsed by leading healthcare professionals in the UK, LQD® Spray is the new innovative, naturally sourced, wound dressing for all cyclists with skin injuries.

Alex Duckworth, owner of LQD® Spray commented...

“LQD® Spray is today’s high-performance wound-care product.
"We are so excited to be sponsoring a partner who are the best in their business. Canyon dhb demonstrate the same desires to set the highest standards.
"We believe Tim and his team share LQD® Spray's ambitions of innovative thinking and higher performance. We are looking forward to helping them win in 2020 by reducing their time away from the saddle caused by wounds”
Note to editors: Releases on our 2020 jersey and the squad will follow at 12pm and 7pm respectively

Tim Elverson, owner and sports director...

"2019 was a fantastic season with many wins home and away. We have continued our progression year on year and in 2020 my only goal is to be better than ’19.
"I want to be even more competitive in Europe than we have been this year, so I have strengthened the squad with this in mind.
"I'm very fortunate to have continued with most of our existing partners, whilst introducing a new title sponsor, Soreen. I’m really pleased they have chosen to become more involved in cycling and I feel we will have a good partnership. Plus I love a Soreen malt loaf, so it's a match made in heaven.
"We are working hard to create a package that delivers on expectations for all of our partners and I expect 2020 to not fall short of this."

Nick Allen, UK marketing manager for Canyon...

“After three very successful seasons supporting the Canyon dhb team, we are excited to continue the partnership for a fourth year in 2020.
"Next year the team continues to broaden its ambition in high level racing both domestically and overseas.
"We are both proud to support the athletes in their aim to perform at the highest level while also achieving our goal of contributing to the sport in the UK.
"We very much look forward to supporting them to succeed in the coming season.”

Rob Atkins, brand manager for dhb, is looking forward to building on an already successful partnership. He said...

“We are thrilled to be embarking on a third year with the squad and we are confident 2020 is going to be the best yet.
“Watching Tim’s riders top the podium is a source of great pride for the whole dhb team, with our first season as title partner exceeding all expectations.
“But the partnership is about more than just winning. Feedback from the squad is key for us to keep developing exciting products for every cyclist, whatever their motivation.”

Mark Simester, managing director at Soreen...

"Soreen is proud to become a partner of the Canyon dhb team. Soreen has been fuelling cyclists for decades and our new Soreen loaf bars have been designed with cyclists in mind as they’re the perfect size for cyclists to top up their energy levels during rides."
dhb are delighted to announce their continuation as joint headline sponsor of Canyon dhb p/b Soreen and unveil the team jersey for 2020.

Collaborating closely with Tim Elverson’s squad for the past two years has been fundamental in the performance sports clothing brand making their kit better for all customers.

dhb’s product development team have fully utilised a pool of riders who really know what they’re talking about and their regular visits to the firm’s Portsmouth headquarters have proved invaluable.
The result of this collaboration is a refined Aeron Lab collection for 2020, including a speedsuit rigorously tested in the wind-tunnel and produced in a factory supplying Olympic champions.

dhb have embraced the challenge of delivering their fastest and most aerodynamic kit yet, without compromising on comfort.

And once again improvements have been made across the wider range, so the benefits of the partnership are passed on to everyone.

Rob Atkins, dhb brand manager, said:

“We have relished the past two seasons working with Tim and his squad, tapping into their expert knowledge to inspire our development team.
“With the help of the riders, Aeron Lab has come a long way since Harry Tanfield won on its debut outing in the 2018 Tour de Yorkshire.
“And it is that insight which ensures we will send them out onto the road next year with our fastest and most exciting kit to date.”

Throw in a pop of colour from the addition of fellow title partners Soreen and an already stand-out jersey, both at home and abroad, has become even more eye-catching.

Elverson, team owner and sports director, is excited to get his hands on the new kit. He added:

“This is another step up from what was already great kit. The exciting part of this process is we get to suggest changes so dhb can adapt it for us to test.
“These changes are carried over to the kit that is available to buy, meaning you can wear exactly the same as our professional riders.
“A lot of hard work has gone into designing the kit and making it relatable to the real world, whether it be for comfort in racing or coffee shop rides. It really is amazing when we see the improvements as a direct result of our feedback.
“We have a great relationship with dhb because we have the same goal. We have the best kit and with the continued development through ideas and fabric development, it will stay a market leader.”

Replica jerseys will once again be available to buy. Watch out for an announcement early next year.

Roger Bacon

New Forest CC club president Roger Bacon sadly died yesterday at the Bournemouth Hospital after a brief but courageous fight against cancer.
He had been ill since late July and after medical investigations at Southampton General Hospital, was diagnosed with leukaemia. Later the cancer spread to his lungs and brain.
He died at 9.50am yesterday, Sunday, December 1, just short of his 80th birthday on Christmas Eve.
More recently noted as the organiser of New Forest CC's Boxing Day 10, Roger had, in the past, been a top level cyclo cross rider, enthusiastic time triallist, keen Audax rider, staged cyclo cross races, organised many club tours and was the club's time trial secretary.
He was a regular with the stopwatch at time trials throughout the area.
Despite his illness, he organised this year's club Christmas Lunch, which will still take place this coming Sunday (December 8) in Burley.
Until he suffered balance issues almost two years ago, he had been a regular at the Scrumpy Wheelers' Wednesday lunch meets in both Bournemouth and Southampton areas.
He was also a keen ornithologist and was a member of the Hampshire Ornithological Society.
He leaves his wife Rosemary, two daughters Jenny and Karen and a grandson, Cameron. Roger's funeral will take place at Test Valley Crematorium, Romsey, SO51 6AA from 12.15pm on Thursday, December 19 followed by a wake at The White Horse, Romsey. His daughter Karen would like to know how many people to expect at the wake. If you wish to attend, please contact her at kelee25@btinternet.com.

Penny Cossburn: RIP Roger - I have some lovely memories of him including being lost in France when using his 20 year old map with a large hole where he thought we were, eating large quantities of cake and his dodgy judgment when it came to hotels! We will miss him very much.
Karen Lee: Penny Cossburn that made me laugh. Dad would never book anywhere to stay in advance and we ended up staying in a very dodgy hotel in Belgium many many years ago because he wouldn't pay the equivalent of £12 a night in a decent hotel. He always has been a bit tight with his money! But never when it came to buying cakes in the cake shop. Dearest dearest Dad, we're going to miss him.

Jacky Prosser: RIP Roger, he will be greatly missed as he did so much for the sport. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

John Noble: Deeply sorry to hear this, he was a good friend of mine R.I.P Roger

Patrick Lockyer: Really sad news. Remember well Roger being so helpful and encouraging at my early attempts in Southampton cx races during the very early 70s. Heart felt condolences to all

Alan McRae: For over 40 years, Roger was a member of local Cycling Club Royalty, working tirelessly for others within and outside his own Club while putting a smile on the face of everyone he encountered, I consider it a privilege to have known him.
Martyn Dymond so sad to hear.he got me into this cyclocross lark .tales at the new forest cc club nights at tiptoe church hall

Andrew Macdonald: Very sad news and a great loss to the club and the local cycling community.
Cyclo cross lost another local hero who built the Wessex league up to what it is today.

Neil Hobbs: Sad news , sorry to hear this 😓

Rachel Hodges Such sad news. Roger was such a local sport hero. I recall him running such brilliant events in my youth. He will be truly missed. 🚲🚲🚲

Tony Parker: He was a true gent and the true grin from him when the conditions at crow were the most challenging I will always remember :)

Ted Norfolk: Sorry to hear the sad news . Fond memories of the old Wessex Cyclo Cross committee meetings 😟🚴

Lee Smith Such sad news , always enjoyed the crow races as a under 16! Thoughts to his family .

Robin Wilmott: NFCC was my first club, and Roger was the most encouraging, knowledgable, jovial, mischievous and hardy rider. He influenced every branch of the sport within the club and beyond as organiser, competitor and helper, and I owe some of my love of ‘cross to him.My first race was his ‘cross at Longslade Bottom, and he drove me to my second Three Peaks race, supporting me through it and my first 12hr TT too.
The tours to see the Ghent Six were truly memorable as well, especially one when, with two hours to spare, we stopped 9km from the return ferry at Dunkirk. After a 30 minute hot chocolate stop, we emerged in to a snowy whiteout! Of the five of us, three crashed 11 times on the now icy roads, but Roger and I kept it upright. Of course, we missed the ferry...
Such a gentleman and an amazing source of amusing stories, I only wish I’d seen him more recently. Ride In Peace Roger.

Catherine Pascoe: Roger sometimes reminded me that he had managed to stay on his bike while the rest of us went down like dominos every few minutes on that ride back from Ghent! More recently, he would ask me what good birds I'd seen - and tell me where he'd been chasing round the country to see some rarity - just as I was poised to start a time trial, and he would forget that he was supposed to be counting me down! He was well up on his target for his 200 bird list for the year, which was an annual aim in recent years.

Jamie Pope: Sad to hear the passing of a real character and catalyst of so many adventures in my youth. My first ever trip 'abroad' in the 70s was to enjoy the Ghent 6, and 1 or 2 belgian beers! The return ferry crossing was so rough the trucks broke their holding chains, but much to Rogers relief the van and bikes were untouched. Good times. May the wind be always at your back where ever you ride.

Norm Gray: RIP Roger, you will be sadly missed .
Your contributions to cycling are much appreciated
Stuart Bowers Sad news indeed. 😔

Kerie Wallace: A life lived to the full. Roger supported all aspects of cycling and really encouraged young riders to get the best out of themselves and cycling. Roger was an organiser par excellence; time trials, cyclo cross, touring trips, cycling socials, he did it all. Along with Gordon Macdonald and Geoff Greenfield, Roger was chairman, they formed the Wessex League, under the stewardship of the BCCA, and started what we have today. May he cycle for ever. 🚴🚵

Andrew Macdonald: Well said Kerie, a lot of the people riding today don't realise how much work they all put into the Wessex league we have today, along Geoff Shergold, Paul Coates and Sid Rooker

Gary Allan: Very sad to hear of Rogers passing ' A great guy and proper cycling clubman , I rode many TTs and Cyclo crosses From the early 80s where He was either timekeeper or lap scorer ' He kept the local club scene alive ,I will miss his trips to the shop for Campagnolo for his lovely Mercian Cycles .
RIP Roger

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 100Km Reliability Trial

.....50 or so riders for the second of the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers reliability rides. This time over an advertised 100km, though the route is 66 miles: which means you get 5 miles on the Cowgrove free, Greg Eastham. Whereas on the '50' plenty of riders were in shorts or knee warmers, this time full winter kit was the order with a low, single digit temperature and a stiff north-easterly, as I left the house in semi darkness for the ride over to Merley. £5 paid - with one notable exception - we depart.

Out along Ashington Lane to Lytchett along lanes ridden so many times, before turning south towards Wareham and across the Arne to Corfe Castle. The first climb of the day past the castle, through Church Knowle for the Cocknowle climb; the first 'test' of the day. Then dropping fast to East Creech and left onto the old road race circuit, along Holme Lane then towards East Lulworth, the road along the ranges our last chance to enjoy a tail wind. A left took us up onto the Lulworth road race circuit behind the castle, today the slowest some had ever ridden up that lane, before racing down into Wool. The road up through Bovington Camp never seems that bad 'on paper' but its ridden on poor road surface and drags unpleasantly on and on. The roads through Affpuddle to Milborne St Andrew were empty and by now the sun was out, turning into as good a morning for riding as you could expect in December. The only issue was whether to follow the Garmin route or the road signs at the entry to the village. Neither of the two groups gained an advantage.

Through Milton Abbas we paid little attention to the picturesque village, the talk dropping, as the incline rose to double digits. Worse is the left turn onto Dunbury Lane, where the road drags remorselessly upwards for another half mile. Whereas Cocknowle was a chance to 'cock measure', here ride at your own pace, ignore those in front, forget those behind. The reward is the descent into Winterborne Stickland, the dry roads allowed a group to reform before the drag up towards Bryanston. But horror! Despite the shouts of the Chairman sat at the back (too far back!), the group sail past the turn and take the long way round by the Fairmile. The previous Chairman would not be impressed. Through Blandford and onto the Cowgrove. With the end in sight the pace invariably quickened, fatigue meant the front group broke up, as those in front pushed on. No prizes in December but we do it anyway. First riders back in three and a half hours. Coffee, cola, cake, chat and another 10 miles back home. In the sun, even the traffic along Castle lane didn't seem that bad. With the Chain Gang on Saturday and nearly 90 on the clock for this morning, its the first good training block of the Winter. Thanks to Kevin Ridge, Martyn Reeder and Lindsay Sims for organising and Tom Clements for acting as roving Marshall (we'll call it quits for the fiver!).......

The next Reliability Trial is on Sunday 12th January over 75 miles

Thanks to Jubilee Chairman Bob Richardson

Poole Wheelers CC Prize Presentation

Poole Wheelers celebrated winning the Cycling Weekly Club of the year award at the Salterns Hotel, Poole. 89 members attended the annual dinner and prize presentation, as well as congratulating the trophy winners the raffle, in support of local charity, About Face raised £442. A dramatic increase to the female contingent in Poole Wheelers is just one of the reasons for their Club of the Year award, with 100 women riders now signed up, a third of the club, while they have also put effort into their social media presence to increase their membership.
