Parentini Wessex CycloCross League, Results

Amy Perryman, David Bone and Dave McMullen were among the winners at round 15 of the Parentini Wessex Cyclo-cross League at Crow Hill on the Hampshire/Dorset border. Perryman led from the gun in the womens race, building a commanding lead in the bright January sunshine with Teammate Helen Pattinson finishing second and first VW40, and Crispin Doyle winning the VM40 race ,it was a good day for the Hargroves Montezuma team.
In the mens race David Bone (RC Ravenna) was briefly challenged by Tom Budden (Sotonia CC) but like Perryman proved too strong, riding away to a solo win.
Further down the field, GCN presenter and local resident Daniel Lloyd, riding the only mountain bike in the race, claimed a creditable 10th place. The former professionals last competitive outing being the Tour of Britain in 2012 The penultimate round of the Wessex league was a joint joint promotion by the Poole Wheelers, New Forest CC, Bournemouth Arrow and the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers, the final round of 16, the Geoff Shergold Memorial, takes place next Sunday (26th) at the Southampton Sports Centre.

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 75 Mile Reliability Trial

55 riders signed on for the BJW 75, the 3rd ride of 4 in this long running winter series, Jubilee Chairman Bob Richardson reports.......
Listening to the wind and rain beating the windows in the early hours didn’t bode well for Sunday morning but it turned out a lot better than anticipated in terms of the weather: warm enough for some to risk riding in shorts and the rain held off, though the roads were filthy. The 75 is reckoned to have the toughest profile of the reliability trials run the Jubilee but the first 10 miles is benign enough along the Cowgrove, though there was a ‘Westerly’ to remind us that this was January - and the obligatory punctures. Through Blandford, New Road being the first real test of the day before the drop down to the Winterbournes. Turning north through Turnworth and up Okeford Hill maybe the easier direction, but its draggy enough to stop the chatter. Screaming down through Okeford Fitzpaine and across the A357, the roads levelled out and despite the recent rain the roads through Hammoon weren’t flooded as is so often the case. The pace was brisk for the run up to Shaftesbury but as we turned onto Foyle Hill the group of 30 or so broke up on the double digit gradients: the worst is knowing that the left turn onto St Johns Hill only marks the halfway point. A brief stop to regroup in the town before heading west along the Chalke Valley. With the wind at our backs we made good speed to Coombe Bissett lined out in single file as those at the front put the hammer down. But by the same token the pace dropped as we ‘dog-legged’ east for the drag up the A350 into the headwind. The pace remained brisk over to Rockbourne though a clash of wheels on the road to Damerham left the Chairman short of three spokes! A short stop to assess the damage and meet the call of nature and we were on our way again Chairman included. By Cranborne the pace picked up again for the ‘smash up’ along the road to Wimborne. The first finishers back within four hours, testament to the hard riding.

Thanks to Kev, Martyn, Lindsay, Bruce & Maggie for help to organise the event and for providing the Tea & Cake at the end!

Clancy Briggs Cycling Academy: Dreams & Ambition

Teaching children to ride can be a challenge. Many of us struggle to find the time in our lives and the right space in our busy urban environment to gift our children this life changing skill. The Clancy Briggs Cycling Academy offers a group environment which encourages learning and development. Your child will become part of a group that learns to play at cycling together, rewarding each other and spurring each other onwards as they acquire new skills and abilities. “Our mission is to move a generation of children, putting the bicycle back at the heart of childhood play, forming lifelong habits that will deliver benefits for health and the environment for years to come.”For many of us, being on a bike with friends is a thread that ties together years of childhood memories and with Clancy Briggs we want your child to create their own memories that they’ll take forward in life. Learning to ride is a gift we give to the next generation and with it comes the likelihood that they’ll live a longer, happier and healthier life as a result. It goes without saying that all the Clancy Briggs Cycling Academy coaches are DBS checked and have the formal qualifications that enable them to work with young people. As such all assistants have a minimum of British Cycling Level 1 or Balanceability qualifications. For leaders, British Cycling Level 2 or Bikeability is the minimum standard. “As we built our team though, we wanted to find people with something extra, so among our team you'll find staff with experience in social work, foster care, able to make a meaningful connection with children of all backgrounds as they find their place in our mini cycling community.....

Speaking from a pre-Olympic training camp in Portugal, Ed Clancy told "Local Riders,Local Races"
I am very passionate about cycling, I believe in in and not just from an elite racing point of view. When I retire after Tokyo, I see myself riding bikes for as long as I physicaly can, I think Tokyo (if selected) will be my last ever race but I am going to continue to ride my bike. I like the fact people use their bikes to commute into work, I like the fact bikes bring people together, families, communities. Its hard for kids these days, in terms of education, welfare and so on they have never had it so good but there seems to be lots of mental health issues. Social media is great but I think they need to be able to play like kids used to play, run around, ride bikes, have fun and not be worried about living up to an image, its hard for them….. Graham Briggs came to me with idea initially, most sports have after school clubs, weekend clubs but there is nothing for cycling, the set up has been hard work, fortunately we have some amazing sponsors and partners, HOPE have been brilliant, Condor have given us bikes and equipment, simple things like a van, there is a lot of equipment required. We don’t want to exclude anyone from cycling, ultimately with the Clancy Briggs Academy we want to be able to get big companies sponsoring, we want to get council grants and we want to be able to take it to everyone and anyone. I have always had more ambition than talent, I am a big dreamer, i dont have any kids of my own but who knows where this could end up, if every road circuit around the country has a Clancy Briggs Academy teaching kids, even just once a week, that’s what we want to do, we want to be all around the UK, that’s the ultimate ambition!

Graham Briggs
*The Clancy Briggs Academy is currently based in Doncaster but they are keen to reach all over the UK including the South. What about a "Pop Up" day at the Bournemouth Velodrome or the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth or even your local school?

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 75 Mile Reliability Trial

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers Winter reliability trial series continues this Sunday (12th January) with the third of the trials, the “75m in 6hrs” ride. The allegedly ‘easier’ clockwise route heads out from the HQ at Merley, along the Cowgrove to Blandford and over past Bryanston School before heading up Bulbarrow followed by the fast descent through Okeford. Hammoon, Sturminster Newton, Marnhull, Todber precede the steep climb up Foyle Hill and St Johns Hill into Shaftesbury before heading east down the Chalke Valley to Coombe Bissett before turning back west towards Cranborne and the final 10 miles flat into Wimborne.
The HQ for the event - as usual - is at the Merley Community Centre, Nr Wimborne with a start time from 8.30 am.
Run over mainly rural roads, the reliability trials offer a great test of rider condition across the off-season. The increasing distances will ensure those hoping to complete all four Jubilee rides stay focused through the winter months!
HQ Merley Community Centre, Harrier Drive, Merley, BH21 1XE (Parking, Toilets & refreshments available).
All welcome, £5 Members, Non-members and unaffiliated riders alike.
Participants must complete the correct course within the time limit.
