Mark Puddicombe Takes Dorset Sandisons Classic!

Mark Puddicombe (CYCLESERVICE SIDMOUTH)) won the Sandisons Classic race in Dorset, pulling clear on the final climb, high above Lulworth Cove to take a clever, first win . Puddicombe did not contribute to the chase of early aggressor Stu Bowers (Scott Racing), staying in the wheels as Kim Little (Merida Factory Racing) used up precious energy chasing.

Bowers had pushed on after taking the first prime atop the tough climb in the Purbeck hills. Little was alert to the danger but could not make contact with the experienced Bowers and would regret his pursuit. The gap was never more than 40 seconds but Bowers was committed, Little,James Horton (VC ST Raphael), and Southampton University RC pair, Harry Chamberlain & Tom Ellis briefly escaped the thinning bunch on the climb but the descent came to soon to deter the chase from behind. Bowers tried hard but needed company and was back with the 18 riders that led the race across the line with two laps remaining in the 46 mile race.
Chamberlain led at the bell, always strong on the hill the Uni man pulled out a small gap but it was quickly snuffed out. Still absent from the front, Puddicombe did well to keep out of trouble as the first significant rain in weeks left the corners slick, some skin was lost but nothing more. The 42 year old chartered surveyor from Sidmouth made his move as the race turned left onto the climb from the village of Coombe Keynes, avoiding another "chute", Puddicombe left it in the "big dog" for the first time and powered away, his fresh legs never challenged. James Horton is a fighter and worked hard for second place, the all-rounder chasing the overall in the Dorset League after coming second for the last two years. Tom Ellis, 20 years younger than the winner but riding strong took third place.
Enthusiastic race organiser, Tom Clements took the decision to move the race to the Lulworth circuit, a course that requires less accredited marshalls than the originally planned Pimperne course.

Great Britain Cycling Team Announce Changes to ParaCycling Pathway

Press Release
GREAT BRITAIN CYCLING TEAM ANNOUNCE CHANGES TO PARA-CYCLING PATHWAY

The Great Britain Cycling Team has announced changes to the para-cycling pathway as the team turns its attention to Tokyo 2020 and beyond.

The changes will see riders on the Paralympic World Class Programme split into two groups: podium and podium potential, whilst the pathway will now feature a foundation programme.

The podium group will consist of riders who have medalled at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games and 2017 UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships, while the podium potential group will be made up of riders that the programme believes has the potential to be medal competitive at world championships on the track or road in the near future.

The foundation level of the pathway has been established to identify, develop and prepare new talent to be brought on to the Great Britain Cycling Team. These riders will receive support in a number of areas including training and competition plans, coaching support, education and development opportunities, and regular training camps.

Great Britain Cycling Team para-cycling programmes manager, Jon Pett, said:

“Over the last couple of years, and since our success at Rio, we’ve spent time looking at the structure of our pathways to ensure that we are in the best possible position to continue to be successful in the future given the increasing standard of competition across para-cycling.

“A big part of this work was looking at the way we identify people with the potential to be successful in our sport, how we manage their induction into elite level programmes and how we turn that potential into medal success.

“We believe the new pathway will do that. The establishment of the foundation programme allows us to identify riders that we believe have the raw materials to be successful in para-cycling, regardless of their levels of experience, and allow them to improve and develop without necessarily having previously experienced the pressure of competing at elite level.

“It’s important that athletes entering the world class programme in future are ready to do so, and this new foundation programme will provide riders with access to the right support at the right time to progress through the pathway and to begin to challenge the more established para-athletes in the Great Britain Cycling Team.”

Track Racing Training Sessions at Bournemouth Track 2017

2017 Track Cycling Race Practice
Tuesday 2nd May sees the opportunity for Accredited Track Riders from all local Clubs and Teams to further develop their skills and fitness for
Competition with a series of weekly Coach led Race Practice Sessions at the 250m Olympic Track at Slades Farm Bournemouth.
Targeted specifically for Youth A/B, Juniors and Seniors (men and women)and organised by the Bournemouth Arrow, a target has been set of at least 4
race simulations for each group each week.
Led by one of the Bournemouth Arrow’s qualified Track Coaches, the riders will be grouped with others of similar ability in such a way as to ensure each group is competitive and safe, thereby encouraging riders to develop attacking skills. The objective is to provide a firm platform for Track League and Open Competition in a safe coached environment.Costs are kept to a minimum, with fees sufficient to cover only the cost of Track Hire. This is an affordable £5 per night or free to Annual Members of the Velodrome. Riders should see the Active Dorset Velodrome WEBSITE for details of their Annual Membership. The Track Centre is open from 6.30pm for roller/turbo warm up and signing on,the track will not be available as other riders are still arriving. A Rider’s Briefing will take place at 6.50pm and activities start at 7.00pm sharp.
Evidence of Track Accreditation from Bournemouth or other UK tracks is required, plus a BC Racing Licence.

Tornado RCC Open 10, 30/04/17 Start List

P337 Two Laps
The course is situated on the border of the New Forest National Park around Bransgore and is a gem of a sporting course. The best ‘drag’ being Harrow Road, is nicely sheltered by hedgerows and has been re surfaced. Often overlooked in favour of the ‘fast’ courses, its actually good fun and the best bit is you get to do it twice as it’s a 5 mile circuit. The roads ‘roll’ pretty well (and are no worse than any other course in the area) with a great start / finish straight. The descent of Thorney Hill can be enjoyed at a good pace, but keep an eye out for the odd rough section of road and allow a safe braking distance for the turn at the bottom. We would advise staying off tri bars for this descent after passing the cattle grid.
Course Description: P337 (2 LAPS FOR 10 MILES)
1.START at holly bush 38 yards north of exit from Black Lane into Forest Road, Holmsley. Proceed north to junction with Burley Road at Thorney Hill.
2.Turn left to crossroads in Bransgore.
3.Turn left, past church to junction with Harrow Road.
4.Turn left into Harrow Road and continue to junction with Lyndhurst Road.
5.Turn left into Lyndhurst Road and continue to junction of Forest Road.
6.Turn left into Forest Road and continue onwards to cross cattle grid and pass start (5.05 miles).
Repeat circuit to FINISH 20 yards prior to entrance of Holmsley Centenary Campsite, 217 yards prior to start.

Gardias Leads BIKE Channel Double on Stockbridge Down

Dexter Gardias (BIKE Channel Canyon) won the Stockbridge Down race with a commanding ride on the tough, unrelenting Hampshire circuit. Gardias went away in the first move of the day with the always-dangerous Andrew Feather (Saint Piran), won the combativity award and forced the final, decisive attack for a well deserved win. Alexander Richardson made it a good day for Bike Channel Canyon taking second place, easily coming around the impressive Jack Stanton-Warren (Halesowen A &CC) after the 21 year old had been forced to chase Gardias on the final climb of Winton Hill towing Richardson in the process. It was Stanton-Warren who had forced the pace with 5 of 80 miles remaining and when Gardias & Richardson got on his wheel he knew 3rd place had his name on it.

How it unfolded:
BIKE Channel Canyon had been expected to boss the national B race but with Max Steadman drafted into the Totnes-Vire team and Joe Fry missing through illness there was opportunity for those willing to work. The mile long climb of Winton hill defines the race but the rolling roads and heavy surface always provide a tough battle, even on a bright spring day.
Andrew Feather went early on the second, 13 mile lap and when Gardias jumped across the gap quickly opened to 25 seconds through the village of Crawley. The pair stayed clear for nearly a lap, benefitting from the stalling tactics of Mitch Webber, Rob Partridge & Richardson. Pulled by Mike Ford (VC ST Raphael) eleven riders bridged up to the leaders, Webber, Richardson, Stanton-Warren, Luke Barfoot (Tri UK), James Hayden (Paceline RT), Dave Billings (Radeon-Bike Science RT), Mike Wragg (CC Luton), Benjamin Marks (Morvelo Basso), Jack Freeman (VC Meudon)and Matt Downie (Primera-Teamjobs), notable absentees, included Will Harper (One pro Cycling, Alex Paton (Madison Genesis) & Partridge. The make-up and size of the group just right, the advantage grew to over two minutes, the parcours doing as much damage as the pace.
Stanton-Warren applied pressure the fourth time on Winton, taking Downie, the fast improving Barfoot and of course Gardias but it was altogether again after Crawley, the gap even dropping to 1:45. At the bell it was still Gardias & Stanton-Warren on the front but it was getting cagey.
Richardson had a few digs heading back on the A30 but it was Stanton-Warren who took advantage of the tired hesitation in the wheels inevitably though he was outnumbered and when Gardias made his move Richardson had a free ride to the line. Mitch Webber looked full of riding, producing his best performance in a race promoted by his father that always adds a bit of pressure, the Raas in Ireland is in his sights. Ben Marks(Morvelo Basso) followed Webber across the line, another solid race, picking riders off on the climb despite stitches in his hand from a mountain bike crash, Marks even gave his bidon to a thirsty Stanton-Warren before he rode away. Before the race the peloton observed a minutes silence in memory of Michele Scarponi (Astana), who died in a training accident near his home in Italy the previous day

Rider Reaction
Dexter Gardias
"We knew it was a tough course, we knew we had to force a move really, Andy Feather forced the move and was riding strong but it is quite a long day. There are some tough climbs, people dont want to put themselves in the red to early. It slowed down a bit on the last lap but we had a big gap and you need to save a bit for the last climb. We got away (Richardson & Stanton Warren) on the descent to Stockbridge, we hit the climb and i just attacked at the bottom. We came for a good thrash!

Alex Richardson
"Dex, Mitch and myself were attacking on the last lap, Dex and Jack finally got a gap and i kicked again over to the move, i could sense there was hesitation behind and from then on it was all positive, Dex and i had power, Dex went at the prefect time and i had it good, i just had to sit on the wheel, i had to dig deep to hang on but i knew i could still kick at the end. I think it is a fantastic job by the team, we worked well the the break was never coming back"

Jack Stanton-Warren
" Came back from the Tour of the North last week, i thought i would go well, just keep an eye on all the "pros". The course is hard and sorts things out, its really good, everyone was taking a turn in the break. On the back of the course everyone was just looking at each other so i just kept pedalling and got a gap so i just put my head down. Alex and Dexter got to me and we worked well, it was hard but it worked. I knew they were going to do a 1-2 so i just rode as hard as i could, Dexter came round, i tried to make it hard for Alex but could not get rid of him"

Mitch Webber
"We all know how to race, tactics are not really a factor, i followed a few moves and got in the move. I did fell very strong the way it panned out on the last lap anyone could have got away, i sat on and kicked half way up the climb. Its only a National B but when its your dads race it adds a bit of pressure"

Mike Ford
" Took my chance to get in the break, i had to work really hard every time up the climb, that was where i was suffering, once i got over the top i felt alright. We worked well together, i knew i was not going to win it but really pleased with a top ten"

Ben Marks
"I kinda of missed the move at the end, a bit stupid of me"

Matt Downie
"The legs were feeling ok, i wanted a bit more than seventh but it is the first race i have finished since Perfs so i was not sure of my condition. I gave it a go on the last lap as the paced had slowed but it came to nothing"

Andrew Feather
" I went away early, Dexter was strong, it was a bit early but i thought i had nothing to lose, i am not really fit at the moment. As soon as you do a bit off the front on your own you knacker your legs"

Will Harper
" I positioned myself well where i thought it would go, a few soft moves went on the A30 and when Bike Channel got in there the gap went out quickly. I got away on my own for a bit and had a good finish, just the wrong group, i was probably a bit too relaxed"

"Sotonia’s first evening 10 mile TT on the popular Romsey course did not attrated 17 riders on a dark evening with rain in the air. It stayed dry for the event however and some good times were recorded for the “long” 10 mile course (actually 17km!)."

New Forest CC Club 10,18/04/17, Report/Results

A hat trick for Lockyer as Dowling hold on in Div 2, Andrew Hanley writes.......
Boltons Bench played host for round three of the New Forest Cycle Club’s 10 series. The popular P164 course runs from Boltons Bench towards Beaulieu before heading to Ipley Crossroads and back towards Beaulieu Road Station. Twenty nine riders participated in the event held on a stunning spring evening with a gentle North Easterly breeze to check the rider’s progress to the turn. Division leader, Paul Lockyer made it a hat trick of wins in his debut season with NFCC to record a stunning time of 21:15, some forty seconds off the course record. Paul built a 35 second lead at the first intermediate check point, and continued to build his advantage over second placed rider Antony Green to a minute and twenty seconds at the end. Antony was pleased to have edged out Ben Boardman into third, who in turn had to battle with James Bannister to hold onto the last podium position. James tracked Ben down over the last climb, clawing into a 50 second deficit, James’s efforts were not rewarded on the occasion as Ben clung on by a mere 3 seconds. “I burnt all my matches today, I had nothing left at the end” an exhausted James commented afterwards.
The battle for Division 2 honours were just as close and it was Bob Dowling who was able to maintain his fine start to the season by holding off Jon Gregory by five seconds in 25:59 and 26:04 respectively. Phil Harries recorded a very respectable time of 26:22 to make up the top three. “Wow, that was close” Bob remarked afterwards, “I’ll be looking over my shoulder from now on!”
Oliver Moody recorded his first win of the year in division three in 29:17 ahead of Catherine Pascoe and Isabelle Parkes in 30.40 and 31.04 respectively. Paul Ashley representing Fareham Wheelers was the fasted private rider in 22:04. Paul commented that “Lockyer (Paul) stands a real chance of the course record in the right conditions, that was an amazing ride from him tonight”

Opinion: Sponsored Teams & the Challenge Facing Cycling Clubs

"Sponsored teams contributing to the sport would be a refreshing change"

Three illustrations that highlight a BIG issue with our sport today… Julian Gee (Sotonia CC) offers his thoughts on the rise of sponsored teams and the challenges facing traditional cycling clubs promoting races.

I was prompted to write this by reading the Facebook post below earlier today…from a race promoter appealing for help running one of the increasingly rare road races in the South. That’s a lot of positions to fill and I hope the club is successful in finding the assistance needed (I’m going to try to be there for one).

The club concerned, Winchester based, VC Venta, has done an excellent job for our sport in the past few years, as it was not that many years ago that it almost folded and merged with another local club. However, I have been delighted to see them rise ‘phoenix like’ to become a major player in the region. They’ve done this not just with getting in riders and entering races but by developing a rounded ‘club’ and contributing to what is, in comparison with earlier times, a pretty meagre list of road events on the calendar, both by running both circuit and road race events such as the race mentioned above, as well as events in other disciplines.
However, clubs like VC Venta are very much in the minority these days. The two excerpts below have been taken from a very popular local cycling website during the past 3 months, and talk in typically grandiose terms, about the proposed activities of two of the newer types of clubs today.

"We are a very unique set up with a focus on winning at the very top level, but with a support network for all categories of rider"

What we plan to do in 2017
• Develop riders who want to race in the biggest races possible. We’ll be heading to big National B races mainly in the southern and central regions. Also a small handful of National A, premier calendar events to mix it with the big boys.
• We hope to have a big presence at local circuit series like Thruxton, Goodwood and Hillingon.
• We also have riders who perform well in the Wessex Cyclocross league, Calshot and Newport Track Leagues.

You will note in the examples above, no mention of organising their own events, or indeed assisting other clubs runs their events, just a list of ‘targets’. Am I alone in thinking that some indication that these new outfits might contribute to the sport other than just turning up mob handed at other events, would be a refreshing change? Don’t get me wrong, I have no axe to grind against the two ‘teams’ used as examples here, I don’t know their riders or who runs them (and I could have easily used many other examples from recent seasons) but it’s their attitude that I feel is so wide of the mark.
Well what’s the answer? In the short term, it’s easy. A few riders from each of the clubs/teams that don’t organise their own events and were planning to ride this event, volunteer to give up their entries and offer to help run this event – I challenge their ‘team mangers’ to take the lead and do this…
Longer term it’s a little harder, but in simple terms our sport needs more clubs like VC Venta and maybe not as many of ‘XYZ Racing Team’ and ‘Team Bob’s Bike Shop’, otherwise road events in the south will disappear for ever, and clubs like VC Venta will say ‘why should we bother?’, and I for one wouldn’t blame them.
