British Cycling Announces Team For Zolder BMX

Press Release
BRITISH CYCLING ANNOUNCES TEAM FOR UCI BMX SUPERCROSS WORLD CUP IN ZOLDER

British Cycling has announced the team of BMXers who will compete in rounds three and four of the UCI Supercross World Cup in Zolder, Belgium, on the 13 - 14 May 2017.

The team consists of the same seven riders who contested the first two rounds of the series in Papendal on 6 – 7 May.

They will travel to Zolder having gained some valuable racing experience in Papendal and will be looking to build on their performances in the next two rounds of the competition. Olympic podium programme rider Kyle Evans made the quarter finals in round one and the semi-finals in round two, winning several of his heats in the process. Fellow podium programme rider Tre Whyte crashed out in the eighth-finals in round one and exited the competition in the sixteenth-finals in round two.

Senior academy riders Quillan Isidore and Paddy Sharrock both exited in the quarter finals in round one and the eighth-finals in round two.

Eighteen year old junior rider Beth Shriever took a career-best result by finishing sixth in the final of round two, lining up in the elite women’s category against the current Olympic and world champion Mariana Pajon. Blaine Ridge-Davis exited the competition in the eighth-finals on both days whilst a crash for Kye Whyte in the sixteenth-finals in round one meant he missed out on competing on day two due to injury. A decision on Kye’s place on the team for Zolder will be made later this week, but the team are hopeful he will recover in time.

British Cycling’s Podium BMX coach Grant White reflected on the team’s performance: “The first two rounds of the UCI BMX Supercross World Cup series in Papendal presented a weekend of true world class racing on an Olympic standard supercross track under a new, exciting and challenging race format. Many of the team delivered some great performances over the weekend and at the same time had experiences that will make them better equipped for the next opportunity. Race experiences like this are truly valuable for the development of our riders.

“It was fantastic to see Beth Shriever perform strongly all weekend having made significant improvements since the end of the 2016 World Cup series. A place in the round two final was a great achievement for Beth and continued exposure to this level of opportunity will help to further her development.

“Kyle Evans put in some world class performances over the weekend and is showing he's getting closer to where he's aiming to be. It was great to see Kyle at the front on many occasions over the weekend, and Zolder will offer another valuable experience for him to build on this performance.

“Paddy Sharrock's performance was also really pleasing to see and he’s beginning to see his hard work pay off. There's still work to be done by the young rider, but Paddy can be encouraged by his improved performance at this level of competition and I know he will continue to put the hard work in.

“The team have a few days to recover and then it's back onto the gate in Zolder for rounds three and four - something all the team are looking forward to.”
