James Gilfillan (VeloRefined Areosmiths) missed out on a medal at the National 50 mile Championships in Wales on Sunday. Still in touch at halfway , just 2 seconds down on third place, Gilfillan faded in the closing miles and had to settle for fourth place. For the first time since 1999 Michael Hutchinson(In gear quickfit) was not on the top step of the podium. The thirteen time winner of the 50 was a non starter, true all-rounder, Matt Bottrill took his first title at the distance, just three days after a silver medal behind Alex Dowsett (Movistar)in the National Time Trial championships.
Gilfillan, who finished ninth last year told "Local Riders" "My best national result ever, really bad pace judgement but the conditions were tough to gauge so the outcome probably would not have changed. It was exciting waiting on the finish times having seen the 25 times but it was not to be!"
