Tarmey Wins Tornado Ten, Report/Results

Nick Tarmey (VC Venta) secured his first Open victory, winning the Tornado CRT sporting 10 at Bransgore on Sunday. The only rider inside 23 minutes, the 41 year old from Winchester clocked 22:34, for a 41 second winning margin on a bright blustery morning. Matthew Buckley (Andover Wheelers, 23:15 took second spot ahead of Paul Lockyer (New Forest CC), with Kirsty McSeveney (...a3crg) reliably winning the womens award in 27:22.
In the more closely contested Road Bike event, the always competitive James Horton (VC St Raphael) was 7 seconds too fast for Dave Dent (GS Stella), 24:29, with Neil Mackley (...a3crg) a further 2 seconds back in third place, Michelle Walter (Bournemouth Arrow CC) was fastest women in 32:02.
The two lap, P337 course has a little bit of everything, a keen cross/headwind across the old Holmsley Aerodrome forcing the riders to concentrate before the fast but rough descent of Thorney Hill. Despite these attractions and their biggest field to date the Tornado club have decided not to use the circuit again, a busy entrance to a caravan site, one of the deciding factors.

Nick Tarmey
“It’s my first Open win, I have been time trialling with the club for 5 years now. This year I really wanted to do sporting events, there should be more to the sport than just seeking out really fast courses and conditions. Go Fast or Win? I would rather win, exactly. I love a sporting course like this where it’s about how you ride the course and the conditions on the day. A lot of seconds to be gained or lost on the corners and how you pace it on the rolling sections, I am sure there are guys here that are stronger than me but I think I rode the course better on the day”
Race Organiser, Adrian Watkins
"Very relieved that the weather turned in our favour, and I'm glad I did the tidy up of the course. I'm not that fast on a bike, but I can certainly do some hi tempo brush work *:))Can you please pass on my thanks to all the riders who supported this event and gave us the biggest field in our clubs history! Everyone seemed to have enjoyed themselves, and I think quite a few bacon baps got downed with gusto so I think that was a hit! We are not a big club as you know, but we are lucky to have such a good bunch to help with the marshalling and the nitty gritty aspects of promoting events."

Over the last few years it has been like a family reunion with many returning year after year to ride this event. The interest in the Spring Cup Road Bike competition bought in some new faces, with many of the main contenders hungry for points so the inevitable shoot out between Dave Dent and Neil Mackley was so close yet again. Fantastic rides by James Horton to take the win in the road bikes, and Nick Tarmey in the TT bikes.
