New Forest News

TAKING advantage of good conditions on the Upton bypass, Ben Boardman became the first New Forest Cycling Club member to beat the hallowed 30mph mark in a time trial,Writes Bob Jolliffe..........
Following a recent personal best 21-09 in the a3crg 10-miler, Boardman really got his act together to clock 19-58 to win the Poole Wheelers’ club event on the Old Wareham Road-Baker’s Arms course with 35 seconds in hand over the promoting club’s Paul Jones.
Unfortunately, because it was a “private trial” in a “club event” event, Boardman’s time will not stand as a New Forest CC record.
He was not the only New Forest club rider to benefit from the clement conditions: 17-year-old Hugo Walters passed the timekeeper after only 21min 50sec on the road, improving his recent new personal best by a massive 1-29.
And clubmate Stuart Peckham also went home with a smile on his face after clocking 22-22, an improvement of 39 seconds from 23-01.
Peckham said: “Hugo was happy with his ride, I was pleased with mine and Ben was over the moon with his.”
O’Hara back in saddle
Boardman did not have it his own way earlier in the week though, when ace clubmate Nick O’Hara made a rare appearance on the start line in New Forest CC’s penultimate evening 10 of the season.
Powerfully built O’Hara rattled off a remarkable 22-15 on the Ringwood-Bransgore-North Kingston loop to beat Boardman by 43 seconds.
James Bannister took third with 23-47, beating young Walters by a single second, while Peckham beat Andrew Hanley by a similar margin with his 24-37.
Others include (New Forest CC unless stated): Sacha Ring 24-57, Kevin King (Sotonia CC) 25-02, Ali Rogers 25-10, Graham Lenton 25-16, Stuart Grace (GA Cycles) 25-38, Jonno Brooks 26-03, Richard Rajski 26-18, Phil Underwood 26-50, Peter Trunwitt (Bournemouth Jubilee Whlrs) 26-52.
Three second separation
RAF CC’s Justyn Cannon collected the silverware in the Clive Pugh Memorial 25 promoted by Reading CC at Bentley on Sunday with a rapid 52-14 in blustery, damp, but warm, weather.
Just three seconds separated the next three places: Nick English of AW Cycles.co.uk just pipped Totton’s Steve Whitewick (VeloRefined/Aerosmiths) with 53-15 against Whitewick’s 53-16, while VC St Raphael’s Steve Walkling was fourth with 53-17.
Others: Gawain Young (Sotonia) 58-42, Jon Dudley (Sotonia) 1-00-11, Chris Summers (Sotonia) 1-11-27, Martin Balk (NFCC) 1-13-02, Bob Jolliffe (NFCC) 1-13-51.
Wooldridge wins
Southampton Tri Club’s Peter Wooldridge was fastest of 41 starters in Sotonia CC’s evening 10 south of Lyndhurst last week.
He clocked 23-19 to beat the promoting club’s Gawain Young (23-32) into second overall. Third Went to Antelope RT’s Stephen Wood and Sotonia’s Stuart Martingale was fourth with 23-41.
