Perfs Countdown, Gary Chambers, Back on the Road Again!

Gary Chambers has chosen the Perfs Pedal to relaunch his road racing career after a five-year break writes Rob Atkins......
The 30-year-old Cornishman, who lives in Fareham, will return to the cut and thrust of the peloton at Southwick on Sunday (11am).
His last outing came in round 11 of the Cornish Series at St Eval in August 2011 before he embarked on a career in the Royal Navy.
Chambers, who hails from Porthleven, was beaten by fellow Cornishman Chris Opie that day.
And the former training partners will lock horns again on Sunday – with Opie set to make his debut for BIKE Channel Canyon.
Chambers, who finished 57th in the British Cycling elite rider rankings in 2011, has represented Fareham Wheelers with aplomb in time trials over the past few seasons.
But with a little more free time now, he insisted entering the Perfs Pedal was a no-brainer.
Chambers, who now rides for Nopinz – the cycle clothing company set up by his former team-mate Blake Pond, said: ‘I haven’t raced on the road since 2011, when I was with Wilier.
‘I joined the navy then and stopped altogether for two-and-a-half years.
‘I then decided to do a few time trials because they are less time consuming with a little family.
‘I’ve just been getting the buzz back and now want to see if I can still do it on the road or not.
‘Perfs is local. It’s only five miles away from me, so it is ideal.
‘Whether I will return to it full-on or not, we’ll see.
‘I will probably stick with time trialling as the mainstay of my season but pick and choose a few good road races here and there.
‘I’ve got great memories of my road racing and that is what is drawing me back in.
‘Winning the Bec CC road race in 2011 was probably my best. I was in a break and mega outnumbered by Felt riders but managed to pull off the win by riding solo for the last 10 miles.’

Chambers kicked off his campaign with victory in the South Downs Bikes Sporting TT over 33.8km in West Sussex last weekend.
He clocked 48min 24sec to beat Chris McNamara, who will also race the Perfs Pedal, by 20 seconds.
Chambers added: ‘I was chuffed with that win.
‘I’m not sure how I will fare with the constant changes of pace on Sunday, though.
‘But I think I’ve got good legs and can hold my own, I’ll maybe just lack a bit race craft. I’ll soon find out.
‘I’d like to make the winning break, to be honest.
‘I would like to make that selection and then get heavily outgunned by the BIKE Channel Canyon team!
‘If I could get in the winning move of 10 to 15 riders, that would be good.
‘Anything beyond that would be a bonus.’

Perfs Countdown: Mick Waite Predicts Chilly Start to Road Season!

Weather forecasts for Sunday’s race have temperatures hovering just above freezing. With no rain expected until next week, only a drop in those figures would put the 74km battle in jeopardy.
Speaking to the Portsmouth News Race organiser Mick Waite said: ‘All the time we have this thick cloud, it won’t freeze.
‘They give snow showers Saturday but all the while it stops above freezing we should be okay.
‘There are still a few puddles around but they don’t give any more rain, so that’s good news.
‘We have a duty of care to the riders but provided it is not awful, we are prepared to do what is required. We’re well used to it now.
‘We’ve had days at Perfs when you could have your coat off but they have been few and far between.
‘As for the wind, it looks like they will get blown up the hill and then turn out of Swivelton Lane into a headwind.
‘That will be tough. It could bail everybody out!’
After more than 130 riders entered, Waite is excited by the final 85-strong field.
He is particularly pleased with the presence of some very promising youngsters, including Junior Tour of Wales winner Fred Wright and British junior road race champion Jacob Vaughan
Waite added: ‘I’m very happy with the field.
‘The juniors will come out better bike riders, although Fred and Jacob are already at that standard.
‘I can’t see past the BIKE Channel Canyon boys for the win, though.’
The Perfs Pedal is based at the D-Day Memorial Hall in Southwick.
With rolling road closures in place, the peloton will set out towards Wickham at 11am and embark on five laps of Portsdown Hill.
After exiting the neutralised zone before the left turn to Boarhunt, they will climb Swivelton Lane and head on to James Callaghan Drive.
At the summit, the riders will turn left and descend back to Southwick.
After five laps, the race will be on to the finish at Hundred Acres Road via Shoot Hill.

New Forest CC 32 Mile Circuit of the Forest

A 32 mile circuit starting and finishing near New Milton, the classic New Forest CC promotion falls earlier in the calendar this year on 2nd April. The rolling course heads east through Lymington to Beaulieu, then across the heath to Lyndhurst before returning to New Milton.

Tornado Road Cycling Club – New Open Time Trial Event (South DC Sporting Series)
The Tornado Road Cycling Club would like to introduce a new course to the open time trial season, forming part of the South DC Sporting time trial series. On 30th April 2017, we will be running a 10 mile TT, 2 laps of the P337 course, with first rider off at 09:00

Course Description:
1. START at holly bush 38 yards north of exit from Black Lane into Forest Road, Holmsley. Proceed north to junction with Burley Road at Thorney Hill.
2. Turn left to crossroads in Bransgore.
3. Turn left, past church to junction with Harrow Road.
4. Turn left into Harrow Road and continue to junction with Lyndhurst Road.
5. Turn left into Lyndhurst Road and continue to junction of Forest Road.
6. Turn left into Forest Road and continue onwards to cross cattle grid and pass start (5.05 miles).
Repeat circuit to FINISH 13 yards prior to entrance of Holmsley Centenary Campsite, 217 yards prior to start.

Mitch Webber: Perfs & Beyond

This time last year #mitchforperfs was trending on social media, those in the know bigging up the Pedal Heaven rider for victory in his home race. Webber did not win but put in a solid performance to come second behind Rory Townsend with the promise of more to come. Unfortunately that was as good as it got for the 21 year old, a season blighted by illness & injury left him frustrated on the sidelines. Rob Atkins caught up with Mitch ahead of this years Perfs.............


Mitchell Webber has admitted he would sacrifice Perfs Pedal glory for a campaign free from illness and injury.
The former Andover Wheelers talent will make his BIKE Channel Canyon debut in the Portsmouth event on Sunday (11am).
In what represents his home race, the 21-year-old would dearly love to improve on last year’s second spot and deliver victory in front of friends and family who will be lining the 74km route.
However, after a virus sidelined him for much of 2016, he is determined to make up for lost time.
And he wants repay the loyalty shown in him by sports director Tim Elverson, who took him to BIKE Channel Canyon from Pedal Heaven.
Webber said: ‘I would love to win Perfs. But obviously the team comes first and it is not the be-all and end-all for me this season.
‘I want to have a long season. I don’t want to go well on Sunday and then lose half of the year again. That was horrible.
‘I certainly appreciate it more when I’m fit now and I want to make up for lost time. I want to do everything I couldn’t do last year, like the Ras. I would love to see if I can get in the squad for that.
‘It was nervous times to see if I would be on the team this year. But luckily Tim saw past the illness and I really appreciate that.
‘I definitely want to repay his faith and when you start racing and enjoying it, that’s when good things happen.’
Webber will line-up alongside reigning champion Rory Townsend, 2012 winner Chris Opie, Rob Partridge, James Lowsley-Williams and Alex Richardson on Sunday.
"This winter has been a good one really. It’s has probably been my best yet.
Most winters I seem to pick up something, whether that is illness of injury. But touch wood this one has been all right.Whether I am on better form that ever, I don’t know. Time will tell. But I know I have been more consistent this winter.
Tim will have a team plan and hopefully my legs can go with whatever he has in store for us.It is one of those races which is great if you do well but not the end of the world if you don’t. You have three weeks before the season really gets going. So it doesn’t really matter too much in terms of form but it is a good bit of morale if it goes well."

It will be his third appearance at the race, which features five ascents of Portsdown Hill and finishes on Hundred Acres Road near Wickham.
The former Andover College student added: ‘I know a lot of the people who go down and watch, especially having raced down at the Mountbatten Centre in Pompey.
‘A few of my friends at Andover Wheelers ride down to watch every year and I have watched it over the years.
‘It is one of the few local races we have. I first did it four years ago in the pouring rain when UK Youth dominated and Marcin (Bialoblocki) won it.
‘Luckily - and I mean luckily - I punctured. I have never been so grateful for a puncture in all my life because it was absolutely freezing!
I would love to win it, of course. Mind you, so would 84 other people!You never know when it is going to be your last season, with teams folding everywhere.So I just want to have a long and consistent season."

Dorset Miles, Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 100 Mile Reliability Trial

Each ride in the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers winter reliability trial series is doable, the 50 easier than the 100 of course. To do all four trials across one winter is the challenge, ok not much of a challenge but enough to require focus and commitment and always pleasing to tick off. 35 signed on for the 100 this year, all aiming for that modest goal, a further 12 rode the 100km option on a damp, dull February morning. Too big to start with, the gruppetto would be thinned out by the rolling, relentless miles, those too eager on the front would pay for it later. Its not about the first 20 miles, its about the last 20, no problem getting it wrong once but learn from it, there is no excuse. Regular readers will know i like my place names, there are too many to list on the 100. There is a bird roasting in the oven along with some potatoes, I'm gonna have a beer, look them up on the BJW website if you really want too. The muddy lanes from Okeford Fitzpaine to Piddletrenthide are classic, the drop down Knackers Hole at Fifehead St Quentin could almost be done in a Kayak. We dont quite go to Fifehead Neville but i just like saying it, so there. Overcooking a corner, someone comes down, its his fault, he knows it, embarrassed more than hurt he is quickly up and on the bike, fair play! A few are unlucky to puncture, no surprise really, gravel, rain-washed from the verges covers the road like Brighton Beach. On to Puddletown, the stronger legs come to the fore, we are all feeling it, Tincleton to Worgret Heath is grippy as the pace quickens. There is talk of tea, there is talk of cake, we can almost smell it but we are not there yet. The climb up from Limberlost after 95 miles is about hanging on, the small knot of riders remaining proving their reliability along Merley Park lane, the final few hundred meters back to the HQ the only part of this wonderful route ridden twice. First back or last back, all earn their cuppa and their medal and can bask in the glow of something! The Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers reliability trial series will be back on Sunday 5th November with the 50 mile event.

New Spring Time Trial Comp for Road Bikes!

A New Spring Competition for Road Bikes:

The South DC (CTT) has introduced a five event TT series for road bikes this season combined in their Sporting Time Trial League.

These are "stand alone events" run alongside a TT bike event all on sporting courses. The first event kicks off with the VC St Raphael on the 19th February and concludes with the ...a3crg "Hurting on Harting" on Sunday the 9th April.

This is a great opportunity for those without a TT bike or those riders who wish to keep the tt mount warm and dry until the summer comes to tackle five challenging courses. Road Bike regs are very simple, no tri-bars, disc wheels or pointy helmets, maximum road bling is essential!

...and what about us? We think its hard to look beyond Bike Channel-Canyon, Opie or Webber but if someone has the confidence, the courage and the legs to follow the UCI Conti team, there could be a surprise! We reckon Elliot Porter could step up.

Perfs Countdown: A minute with Rory Townsend!

As the countdown to the Perfs continues we spent a minute on the phone with 2016 winner Rory Townsend. The 21 year old enjoyed 18 victories last season and is raring to go for new team Bike Channel-Canyon.

Q, FIFTH IN 2015 BEHIND THE ONEPRO TRAIN, VICTORY LAST YEAR, PERFS IS A GOOD RACE FOR YOU, WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT IT?

RT "I get more excited for perfs than i do for Christmas! I love racing my bike so this race is an early opportunity to let loose! The course is excellent, the hill splits it up and then the top section makes the selection."

Q, ARE YOU HOPING FOR BAD WEATHER?

RT "We've all got sparkling white Sidi shoes for the new season so I hope it's a dry sunny day!"

Q, THE TEAM OBVIOUSLY RESPECT PERFS BUT YOU ARE CLEAR FAVOURITES, DOES THAT ADD ANY PRESSURE OR DO YOU THRIVE ON IT?

RT "I do think there's added pressure on us, rightly so, there's an expectation to perform being majority full time riders."

Q, PRE RACE FOOD, EVENING MEAL THE NIGHT BEFORE? AND WHAT ABOUT BREAKFAST?

RT "I'll be eating as much as I can the night before and the same at breakfast, I'll have a heavy week going into perfs so it won't just be race fuel but recovery too."

Q IS TIM ELVERSONS PRE-RACE TALK CALM AND COLLECTED OR IS IT A CHURCHILLIAN BATTLE CRY?

RT "Tim certainly knows how to rally the troops, I think we'll all be raring to go for the first one of the season on new bikes and kit, so he may need to keep us cool. Music choice will be vital, he gets that right 10 times out of 10."

Q, ANYONE ELSE ON THE PERFS START LIST CATCH YOUR EYE?

RT "There's some very handy juniors on the start list and I would imagine there will be a strong challenge there with many of them having an intense winter track programme."

Q LOOKING AHEAD, WHERE WILL THE TEAM BE RACING IN THE NEXT MONTH OR SO?

RT" After Perfs, I am over in Belgium for a pro kermesse the first weekend of March, we have a UCI race in Holland the weekend after, then I'm planning to head over to Ireland for St Patrick's weekend and race in Carrick-On-Sur which isn't far from my family's home town."

Q, HAS YOUR WINTER TRAINING GONE WELL, ARE YOU WHERE YOU WANT TO BE? ANY ILLNESS

RT " Training has gone well! First time in a long time I've been at home all winter, but with the help of Grinta coaching I am three months ahead of where I was last year. I've had the flu recently but looking to bounce back, and it did help me drop some of the Christmas weight."

Q, YOU HAD A GREAT SEASON LAST YEAR, WHAT WOULD MEAN PROGRESS THIS SEASON, WHAT ARE YOUR AIMS?

RT "I would like to make some progression in road racing as my major results came in criteriums last year. With there not being an overall series for the elite road race it means each of us can go for races that suit us as opposed to one rider going for the overall"
