Shrosbree off to France

Gregg Shrosbree (Merida UK) will be racing in France next season with the VC Riom team. Sandbanks based Shrosbree has been mixing his racing this season, racing both, on & off road. He took his first win on the road at the Brent Tor Road Race in July. However racing in France will be a big step up for the 19 year old. “I will be based in the Auvergne riding elite 1 day races and some stage races as well. It will be a big step up for me but it is a great opportunity for me to test myself and see if I have what it takes to play with the big boys. The area is mountainous so it should suit me.”

Shrosbree will spend most of the winter training in Dorset; he is a regular with the Bear Cross Sunday group, before a warm weather training camp with hills “to kick me into some real shape” The racing calendar has yet to be finalised but he expects to link up with his new teammates in the early spring. “I am pretty nervous but also excited to see how hard I can push myself and also be around a solid team with goals and great support”

Jay Eastwood (Hargroves Cycles) won the final round of the Moreton village series in fine style. Eastwood had already wrapped up the overall, easily defending the title he won last year with 7 victories in the 13 race series. Training on the track has sharpened the speed of the Hargroves rider. Fifty one starters lined up for the final race, once again blessed with bright sunshine.

The fast, flat circuit is made for sprinters and when the scratch group brought the race together the odds on Eastwood shortened. Steve Dring (Echelon-Rotor) had a dig on the bell lap but was not allowed to get far.

Roland Tilley (ridebike.co.uk) & Gregg Shrosbree (Merida) tried hard but were resigned to the minor placings. Organiser Peter Washington adds a nice touch to the final race each year; free entry and free tea and cakes post race put a smile on everyone’s face and race sponsors, Alyson France Solicitors, provided bidons and mussettes.

A co-operative approach to this year’s racing, with riders marshalling at least one event has proved a success. Peter is stepping down next year but is keen for the series to continue. This year saw 600 riders sign on for the 13 races; £600 was raised for the St Johns ambulance and £390 for the Moreton Village hall.

BOURNEMOUTH JUBILEE WHEELERS SUMMER TRACK SESSIONS Thursday evenings 6.30 pm — 8.30 pm 18th and 25th August and 1st September 2011 All abilities welcome. Hire bikes are available for those without their own track bikes. The Jubilee’s Richard Eastham is currently completing his British Cycling Level 2 Track Coaching Qualification. In order to do this, he needs to organise and deliver 6 x 1 hour coaching sessions. This series of evening summer sessions will therefore contribute to his coaching certificate. James Gilfillan (Team Feat) has dominated the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers open Time Trials this season.

The Poole based triathlete won the 50 mile test to add to the 25 mile crown he won last month. Gilfillans winning time of 1.49.55 was nearly 4 minutes clear of Tom Alliban (Revo Racing) with 1.53.11. Gary Dighton (Poole Wh), 1.54.22, secured third spot. Terry Icke and Richard Davidson backed up Dighton to win the team prize for the Poole club. The event incorporated the Wessex Veterans championship with Icke’s time of 1.56.36 giving him the title. Gilfillan is off to the French Alps next for the Alp D’Huez triathlon. The 110 km cycling stage includes the 21 hairpin bends of the famous Tour De France Mountain.
• Claire Day (Born to Bike) made the long journey to Norfolk to ride the East District CA 100 mile TT. Day has already won a team gold medal at the national Championships, three weeks ago. Things got even better for the Winton Based rider as she recorded a personal best time of 4.11.45. Meanwhile, around the clubs evening time trials are into the last few weeks. Colin Humm has won the New Forest CC 25 mile title. Gary Dighton & Terry Icke are battling it out for the Poole Wheelers championship and Nick Spencer looks to have secured the Bournemouth Jubilee best all-rounder title. Pete Wilson consistently performs for the Arrow, while John Chapman is the man to beat at the CC Weymouth events.

• Para-Cycling champion, Darren Kenny OBE has just returned from racing in Italy. Kenny was part of a Great Britain team riding a 2 day event in Brescia, east of Milan.

Points earned from racing this year will count towards selection for next years Paralympic games in London. Verwood based Kenny struggled in the road race but won the following days 15km Time Trial to take maximum points.

Next up will be the World Road Championships in Denmark in September.

Mark Chadbourne (ridebike.co.uk) struck gold at the National X country MTB championships in Richmond, North Yorkshire. Racing in the 40-45 yrs category, Poole-based Chadbourne revelled in the tough conditions; heavy rain had left the technical course covered in a slippery coating of mud. Chadbourne used his bike handling skills to build a solid lead of over 4 minutes to take the age group title.

Teammates Roland Tilley, 5th & Steve Moors 9th also made the long trip north.

Shaftsbury Mountain Biker, Paul Hopkins (MERIDA) defended his veterans title in the 40-44 yrs age group but was pushed all the way by Simon Willats (ridebike.co.uk).

“I am getting married next week and was given special permission to train for this” he joked. Willats, from Poole spends much of the year windsurfing in Australia but returns home each summer to race.

• Gregg Shrosbree (Merida) had to settle for second place in round 10 of the Moreton Evening series. Shrosbree had taken his first win the week before and was hungry for more success. The sandbanks rider had broken away with Andy Hargroves (Hargroves Cycles) with 3 miles to go in the 30 mile race. Hargroves though proved the stronger in the sprint for the line.
• Former Triathlete, Nick Spencer (Bournemouth Jubilee WH) has turned to time trialing and is fast improving. Christchurch- Based Spencer has recorded personal bests at all distances this year but cannot get into the podium positions.

He is getting close though; his time of 23.45 placed him 4th in the Sotonia cc 10 mile event at Kings Sombourne. Bryce Dyer (VC ST Raphael) 23.21 finished just ahead of Spencer in third. Winner Andy Bryson (Sotonia) recorded 22.05 for an emphatic win.

Next Sunday Spencer tackles his first 100 mile test, the Southern Counties Cycling Union event in Sussex.

Primera Sportive - Association with the Steve Bernard Foundation

Sportives are fast becoming the most popular cycling endurance events around with hundreds springing up all over Europe. The Primera Sportive offers riders the chance to take on a challenging but exciting course around the Purbecks whilst experiencing the excellent atmosphere of a Primera event. What's more, thanks to our partnership with the Steve Bernard Foundation, all the money raised from the ride goes straight to local sport!

There will be a 50mile and a 100 mile course taking in the gorgeous Purbeck and Dorset countryside.

Gregg Shrosbree (MERIDA) was disappointed to finish second in round 10 of the Moreton Evening series in Dorset. The 19 year old had scored his first win on the road last weekend at the Brentor Road Race in Devon and was hungry for more. Shrosbree along with Andy Hargroves (Hargroves Cycles) had attacked the bunch and had a good gap as they approached the bell lap.

Unfortunately they were too quick for the timekeeper, who failed to sound the bell in time for them to hear. Hargroves team mates, Eastwood and Bowers policed the bunch and the gap grew.

Sensing that something was wrong, the duo agreed to roll across the line together. However the chequered flag came into sight and Hargroves called off the truce, easily winning the sprint, Shrosbree though, did appear not to contest the finish. He will not lose sleep over it though, “It’s only training” he said.

Andy Hargroves was racing Moreton for the first time; the Hampshire based team are dominating the series with wins already for Eastwood & Luke Gray. Eastwood picked up the scraps in the sprint for third place and looks good to repeat his overall win of last year.

Gregg Shrosbree (Merida) scored his first Road Race win at the Brentor event in Devon. Shrosbree rode aggressively throughout the 40 mile race but could not escape the bunch. However one big effort in the last few miles saw the Sandbanks rider go clear. Broadstone Based Luke Gray (Hargroves Cycles) and Andy Boyd (Revo Racing) managed to get across to Shrosbree but had no answer when the Merida rider kicked again.

Gray took second with Boyd third. Nineteen year old Shrosbree was happy with his maiden win on the road and is already looking ahead “My plans for the rest of the season are to get as many points as I can, before I go the Alps and then on to Belgium to tackle the big boys in the Kermesses at the end of August. Plans for next year include a first category license, a bigger team and the National Champs. Shrosbree is a talented rider, perhaps he needs to find the killer instinct to deliver his worthy ambitions.

James Gilfillan (Team Feat) won the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 25 mile Time Trial, on the Upton course.

The world age group triathlon champion’s time of 52.28 put nearly 2 minutes into his nearest challenger, Tom Alliban (Revo Racing) 54.25. Ringwood -Based Gilfillan has recently ridden the Race across America (RAAM) and proved too strong for the pure cyclists. Gary Dighton (Poole Wheelers), 54.38 came third, leading the winning team of Terry Icke & Steve Birtwistle. Judith Martin won the ladies race to make it a good day for the Poole club. Gilfillan is off to France next week for “Le Alpe D’uez Triathlon, the 115km bike leg finishes at the top of the famous climb with the following 22km run around the ski station. Meanwhile Winton rider Claire Day (Born to Bike) won her second gold medal at the 100 mile time trial championships. The former Bournemouth Jubilee member repeated her success of last year, recording 4.20.56 as part of the winning ladies team. "Crap day! crap legs!, you know the story, i grovelled around determined to finish so we could win the team award and i ended up winning my age group as well!" said Claire.

• Ridebike.co.uk trio, Mark Chadbourne, Simon Willats and Roland Tilley claimed 3 of the top 5 placings in round 4 of the Southern X country MTB series. Chadbourne was best placed in second spot. Carol Tilley won the veteran ladies race. All four will be in action this weekend at the National X country Championships at Richmond, North Yorkshire.

With series leader, Jason Eastwood (Hargroves Cycles) not riding, Steve Dring (Team Echelon-rotor) claimed the honours in round 8 at Moreton. The race came together with just over 2 laps remaining.

The usual lull was followed by a flurry of attacks, none of which succeeded, until Dring went with a mile to go. Gregg Shrosbree (Merida) liked what he saw and jumped across to the escaping Echelo-Rotor rider. The pair held a gap to the line, with the smart money being on the more experienced Dring.

Luke Gray (Hargroves Cycles) won the tight sprint for third place. Once again bright evening sunshine had greeted the fifty plus field, with organiser Pete Washington opting for 55 mins plus 1 lap instead of the usual eleven 3 mile laps.

• Dave Dent (wightlink RT) got the better of midlands visitor Jamie Scott (Colbert Racing Team) by 23 secs and set a benchmark time for the new Wareham course. Dent recorded a time of 1.10.17 for the Hilly circuit. Paul Matthews (UTAG-YAMAHA) 1.11.06 was third The Bournemouth Jubilee promotion was a dry run for the final round of the Rudy Project National series organized by the Poole Wheelers in October. Credit must go to race organiser,Les Pick who put in a lot of work to make this race a little different, including a 5 man team award, with the Poole Wheelers picking up the generous £20 each award.
Tery Icke (Poole wh) clocked a seasons best 53.37 in the A3CRG 25 on the Liphook course. Icke, who had ridden the lumpy 32 the previous day, was backed up by Leighton Girling 54.20 & Richard Davidson 54.23 on what turned out to be a float night. Stephen Whitewick (utag-yamaha) won with 49.32

The Mayor of Bournemouth, Councilor Chris Rochester, officially opened the new track with the ringing endorsement of former Olympic and Commonwealth Games rider Geoff Cooke. Thankfully the "suits" were outnumbered by the "skinsuits" and it was a great opening celebration.

And Finally a French Letter;

Last Friday 24th June I was third at Wachterbeke. 48 km 7 laps.
1st René Colman. (St. Niklaas)
2nd Ted Battersby (From Yorkshire)
3rd Trevor Fenwick (Bournemouth Jubilee)

On Monday 27th June I was second at Gavare 49 km 7 laps.
1st René Colman (St Niklaas)

3rd Daniel Nuytink.

Both events were in Belgium and for over 7O years of age, and in the Ghent area.

They have altered the rules this month. Instead of racing against over 72s they have dropped it to over 70s; which means I am giving away eleven years.
The over 68s still start with us, so the racing is no harder, just more difficult for me to get high up in my group’s prize list.
Bringing in the over 70s brings in Tour de France winner Lucian Van Impe, who you may have heard of, plus some other new lads.
His cousin Freddy Van Impe at 68 also rides with us and is going better than Lucian.
In both the events above, they started the 60 to 68 group with us; which makes it hard for me, but somehow the judges are able to sort out the finishing lists with three different races and over 60 riders.
Prizes in my event cover the first 15 and in the others the first 25, but I rarely hear any complaints.
The majority of riders are World class in my events. Tour de France stages, placings in World masters or Belgian championships.
I came off in an event three weeks ago, and although I was not hurt, I wrecked a carbon fibre frame. It has taken a couple of weeks to sort out another bike and myself.
These events are well marshalled. The marshals have Police training and authority to stop traffic. It is rolling road closure. I found out this weekend that all marshals get 16€, a lunch pack, and two bottles of beer.
At least it shows appreciation.
René Coleman who won both events above is the next oldest to me at 75. He retired last year, and the lads decided to let him win his last race.
He turned up this year with a new car, new bike and absolute flying form!
