Williams Wins Moreton,Eastwood takes Overall!

Morgan Williams (New Forest CC) won the final round of the UK-Biking Moreton Race Series. Fast fading light saw a shortened race and the 45 minutes + 1 lap was never going to be long enough for the scratch group to make the catch. The yellow group of Williams however spent the race attacking each other before calling a truce for the last lap. Williams took the initiative, leading out the sprint and crossing the line with a shout, he clearly wanted it more. Jay Eastwood (Primera/Specialized) led the fast boys in, out of the points but the overall was his for the third consecutive year. Eastwood has won 18 races in that time, such is his dominance. At the prize presentation in the village hall, the series winner was quick to acknowledge the hard riding of his colleagues in the scratch group. Asked if he would share the prize money with them all? Eastwood joked he would like to but his Primera team mates wanted their share!(a team celebration is planned for what has been a great season)) Wet weather bookended the series, torrential rain causing the first race to be abandoned, with rain falling steadily on the last few laps of the final round. Numbers were down slightly on last year, but organisers Richard Lang and Steve Dring are already planning for next year.

Moreton Mid-Summer Championships: Eastwood Again!

Jason Eastwood (Primera/Specialized) won the Moreton Mid-Summer championship race with his third consecutive win in the series. The championship event, postponed from two weeks ago, was run off over a longer distance and carried cash prizes, in addition to the overall series points. The handicapper did his job but with the promise of a payday the scratch group were not hanging about. Despite some honest work by the slower groups, everyone was together after an hour of the 90 minute+1 lap race. After a couple of laps of watching each other, Mark Chadbourne (Ridebike.co.uk) had a dig followed by teammate Ro Tilley, a brief moment of freedom was soon snuffed out as the bunch closed it down. Gregg Shrosbree (VC RIOM) was next to go, and this move would stick, as Eastwood and Luke Gray (Baboco CT) quickly responded. Shrosbree has spent much of the season racing in France, he has had a torrid time of it with too many “chute’s” but the miles are in the legs and at this level it’s no problem. The last lap was “through n’ Off” with the bunch chasing forlornly. Both Gray and Shrosbree opened gaps but Eastwood was always alert and before the line was in sight victory was his.

UK-BIKING Midsummer Moreton Championship

Thursday 5th July is the UK-Biking Moreton Midsummer Championship night! The championship race starts at 7pm and will be longer than usual at 90 minutes + 1 lap. There are cash prizes on offer for the first three across the line, along with some beautiful trophies, kindly donated by Hill & Son Ford Service in Wimborne. Entry is on the line and the race is run under TLI rules.
As always, marshals are needed, riders who have yet to take their turn will be especially welcome or bring a friend/family member along.

Eastwood Wins at Moreton

Jason Eastwood (Primera/Specialized) won the opening round of the UK-BIKING road race series at Moreton in Dorset, his powerful sprint proving decisive. Brett Edbrook (Ridebike.co.uk) was the man pipped on the line with Luke Gray (Boboco) riding his training bike, third. A 1hour/1 lap format saw the scratch group set off first, effectively a lap behind. The fifteen strong “fast men” worked cohesively to quickly reduce the deficit and within 30 minutes the race was together. The usual flurry of attacks came to nothing and as the light faded, fast twitch muscles began to flex in anticipation. Attacking in the finishing straight, Paddy Dunn (CC Weymouth) held a gap of some 20 metres at the bell.

15 year old Matt Mildon (Mud, Sweat &Gears) tried to join Dunn but thought twice and was soon back in the wheels and with half a lap to go so was Dunn. Mildon made the right decision, riding on junior gears the youngster held off some bigger boys to take 4th. It has been a good mid-week for the Primera/Specialized team. Toby Neave won at Goodwood on Tuesday and Will Stephenson finished 2nd at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth on Wednesday. Eastwoods win leaves only Ian Legg of the four man team yet to offer a victory salute. It was a good night also for the UK-BIKING road race series. The 49 riders who signed on outnumbered both the new Bournemouth track league and all of the local clubs evening time trials.

Local Cycling News

Luke Gray had a disappointing start to his Cyclo-Cross season in Belgium. After just one race his team manager decided “I was not on the team anymore” After some frantic “asking around” Gray managed to secure a deal with SL Carbons, who will be providing bikes and wheels for the National U23 Champion. Gray will be racing for the Baboco Cycling Team, the Belgian team that 3 times World Cyclo-Cross Champion Erwin Vervecken rode for. The former Hargroves rider was back in the UK last weekend, racing at Prospect Park, Reading in the latest round of the Wessex league. Suffering from a virus picked up a few days before the event Gray struggled to get on terms. Despite making the leading group of 5 he could not live with the pace and dropped back to eventually finish 5th, 2 minutes down on the winner Crispin Doyle (Swindon RC) “I was a little disappointed but I had my troubles in the week, I’ll be looking for better next time” Gray told “E D”

CC Weymouth successfully defended the Hill Climb Trophy they first won last season. Playing the numbers game, Weymouth mobilised their troops to put riders on the start line and score counting points.

The Weymouth club also had the individual winner last time with Todd Preston, this year, with Preston not riding; the way was open for Simon McLaughlin (BJW) to take the title.

McLaughlin made it a clean sweep, winning all four rounds in what was a very popular series this year. Notable by their absence were the Bournemouth Arrow, with not one rider in any climb. CC Weymouth will start the defence of their crown on the 30th September 2012 on Portland, round 3; promoted by the Jubilee will be on Okeford Hill. At the time of writing the competition format remains the same. Official results have yet to be issued. (More images from the series on "E D" soon}

All interested parties are invited to a meeting at Moreton Village Hall to discuss next years road race series. This years co-operative approach worked well, with riders taking on the marshalling duties. The meeting is from 18:45 on Friday 4th November.

Prospecting in tough park!
It might have been a parkland course but, according to New Forest CC’s Martyn Dymond, some steep climbs in the Bill Higson Memorial Cross at Reading, made it a bit of a brute.Martyn, who is currently the only New Forest member riding cyclo cross, took 16th place from the 73 competing in the veterans’ event in the Reading CC promotion at Prospect Park on Sunday.“It was all grass with some hilly climbs. It was the toughest course I’ve done all season by a long way,” said Martyn.Matt Woods of Hargroves Cycles took first place in the vets’ race from Sean Williams of Wight Mountain. Swindon Road Club’s Crispin Doyle was victorious in the senior race.The events were part of the Wessex League series.

High hills equals high heart rates!
Martyn was not the only New Forest CC member taking on some rigorous climbing on Sunday.Club president Roger Bacon, secretary Peter Weaver and up-and-coming time triallist Gary Lock tackled the 73 miles distance in the South Downs Sportive, while Mike Ahearn and Phil Collins took on the even bigger challenge of the 100-miler.According to Roger, Butser Hill was brutal, with a strong headwind for its full length while the one in six clamber up South Harting Hill was close to being a killer, sending heart rates soaring.But as a tired-sounding Roger reported: “We got up there. I’m still alive . . . just.”

Another Sunday ride option opensNigel Gemmell is organising regular Sunday rides in the eastern sector of the New Forest starting at the Heath Roundabout at Dibden at 8am. Nigel is also aiming to ride from Southampton to Barcelona in a week next June and wants to hear from anyone interested in going along with him on the sponsored ride to raise money for Southampton Hospital’s Eye Unit. Moreton Road Race Series 2012

A meeting to discuss the Moreton Village Evening Road Race Series will be be held at 18:45 on Friday 4th November. Organiser Peter Washington will not running the events this year. All interested parties are invited to attend, to hopefully secure the future of next years series. The Lloyd Coward & Portland Port RR, promoted by CC Weymouth was the only other opportunity for riders to race on the road in Dorset this year. The absence of British Cycling events in Dorset is a cause for concern. Only two seasons ago the Wessex League put on 14 events in the region including the 3 day Tour Of Dorset which attracted over 140 entries. Moreton has been run under "The League International" rules since its first year, 2005. this year, with Washington taking a back seat, the races were succesfully run on a co-operative approach. All those wanting to race were obliged to marshall two events. This same approach may well see this popular series on the calendar in Dorset next season.

Local Cycling News

With series leader, Jason Eastwood (Hargroves Cycles) not riding, Steve Dring (Team Echelon-rotor) claimed the honours in round 8 at Moreton. The race came together with just over 2 laps remaining.

The usual lull was followed by a flurry of attacks, none of which succeeded, until Dring went with a mile to go. Gregg Shrosbree (Merida) liked what he saw and jumped across to the escaping Echelo-Rotor rider. The pair held a gap to the line, with the smart money being on the more experienced Dring.

Luke Gray (Hargroves Cycles) won the tight sprint for third place. Once again bright evening sunshine had greeted the fifty plus field, with organiser Pete Washington opting for 55 mins plus 1 lap instead of the usual eleven 3 mile laps.

• Dave Dent (wightlink RT) got the better of midlands visitor Jamie Scott (Colbert Racing Team) by 23 secs and set a benchmark time for the new Wareham course. Dent recorded a time of 1.10.17 for the Hilly circuit. Paul Matthews (UTAG-YAMAHA) 1.11.06 was third The Bournemouth Jubilee promotion was a dry run for the final round of the Rudy Project National series organized by the Poole Wheelers in October. Credit must go to race organiser,Les Pick who put in a lot of work to make this race a little different, including a 5 man team award, with the Poole Wheelers picking up the generous £20 each award.
Tery Icke (Poole wh) clocked a seasons best 53.37 in the A3CRG 25 on the Liphook course. Icke, who had ridden the lumpy 32 the previous day, was backed up by Leighton Girling 54.20 & Richard Davidson 54.23 on what turned out to be a float night. Stephen Whitewick (utag-yamaha) won with 49.32

The Mayor of Bournemouth, Councilor Chris Rochester, officially opened the new track with the ringing endorsement of former Olympic and Commonwealth Games rider Geoff Cooke. Thankfully the "suits" were outnumbered by the "skinsuits" and it was a great opening celebration.

Last Friday 24th June I was third at Wachterbeke. 48 km 7 laps.
1st René Colman. (St. Niklaas)
2nd Ted Battersby (From Yorkshire)
3rd Trevor Fenwick (Bournemouth Jubilee)

On Monday 27th June I was second at Gavare 49 km 7 laps.
1st René Colman (St Niklaas)
2nd Trevor Fenwick (Bournemouth Jubilee)
3rd Daniel Nuytink.

Both events were in Belgium and for over 7O years of age, and in the Ghent area.

They have altered the rules this month. Instead of racing against over 72s they have dropped it to over 70s; which means I am giving away eleven years.
The over 68s still start with us, so the racing is no harder, just more difficult for me to get high up in my group’s prize list.
Bringing in the over 70s brings in Tour de France winner Lucian Van Impe, who you may have heard of, plus some other new lads.
His cousin Freddy Van Impe at 68 also rides with us and is going better than Lucian.
In both the events above, they started the 60 to 68 group with us; which makes it hard for me, but somehow the judges are able to sort out the finishing lists with three different races and over 60 riders.
Prizes in my event cover the first 15 and in the others the first 25, but I rarely hear any complaints.
The majority of riders are World class in my events. Tour de France stages, placings in World masters or Belgian championships.
I came off in an event three weeks ago, and although I was not hurt, I wrecked a carbon fibre frame. It has taken a couple of weeks to sort out another bike and myself.
These events are well marshalled. The marshals have Police training and authority to stop traffic. It is rolling road closure. I found out this weekend that all marshals get 16€, a lunch pack, and two bottles of beer.
At least it shows appreciation.
René Coleman who won both events above is the next oldest to me at 75. He retired last year, and the lads decided to let him win his last race.
He turned up this year with a new car, new bike and absolute flying form!
