Primera-Specialized Going Strong!

Jason Eastwood of Primera/Specialized writes…….A windy but pleasingly dry night at Mountbatten, Portsmouth for another round of the series. Ian Legg, Toby Neave and myself were there for the E/1/2 race which with a full field looked as though it was going to be tough.

Team plan - attack one after the other and when the break established to make sure we were all in it. After 15 minutes we were away with 12 or so others including series leader Justin Hoy (Felt). One after the other we attacked with Ian showing amazing form but with 5 laps to go it was Toby turn it was to go. Most of the field had been destroyed and retired with only about 10 riders left in the race. Toby took a VC St Raphael rider with him and they held on for a photo finish for the win. The bunch was only a few seconds behind, a Willier rider went with 2 to go but was brought back and then with 400 to go Ian opened it up, Justin Hoy put down the power and went past Ian and I managed to come around Justin for a photo finish for 3rd with Ian taking 5th
Once again the team rode well with a dominant performance from start to finish.

Toby finished 2nd at Dunsfold yesterday and is close to winning the Surrey league series. Will Stephenson has just returned from a 4 day race in Belgium (details to follow) and I'm riding the National Masters Road championship this weekend in Surrey.

Moreton Mid-Summer Championships: Eastwood Again!

Jason Eastwood (Primera/Specialized) won the Moreton Mid-Summer championship race with his third consecutive win in the series. The championship event, postponed from two weeks ago, was run off over a longer distance and carried cash prizes, in addition to the overall series points. The handicapper did his job but with the promise of a payday the scratch group were not hanging about. Despite some honest work by the slower groups, everyone was together after an hour of the 90 minute+1 lap race. After a couple of laps of watching each other, Mark Chadbourne (Ridebike.co.uk) had a dig followed by teammate Ro Tilley, a brief moment of freedom was soon snuffed out as the bunch closed it down. Gregg Shrosbree (VC RIOM) was next to go, and this move would stick, as Eastwood and Luke Gray (Baboco CT) quickly responded. Shrosbree has spent much of the season racing in France, he has had a torrid time of it with too many “chute’s” but the miles are in the legs and at this level it’s no problem. The last lap was “through n’ Off” with the bunch chasing forlornly. Both Gray and Shrosbree opened gaps but Eastwood was always alert and before the line was in sight victory was his.

Moreton Series:Groundhog Day as Eastwood Wins Again!

It was like Groundhog Day down in Dorset as Jay Eastwood (Primera/Specialized) galloped to yet another victory in the Moreton series. Eastwood appears unbeatable in the finale, nearly always a bike length clear at the line. Few would bet against him winning the overall series for a third straight year. For the first time this year the sun shone on a Thursday evening, a stiff breeze blew but was already dying as the race got underway. The three groups ahead of the scratch were altogether by half distance and seemingly working well. As is often the case in handicaps though, too many seem to be waiting for the catch. If those further down the line showed the industry of the “same old faces” on the front then maybe they would surprise themselves. The combined “slower” groups held a gap of around a minute for 3 laps but once the chasers had caught a glimpse the game was up. Into the last lap, Eastwood & Luke Gray (Baboco CT) were first to make the junction, muscling their way to the front, followed by the rest of the contenders. All eyes were on the Primera rider but Gray was the one who opened up the sprint. Eastwood had it covered however and was quickly on the wheel and even quicker to come round on Grays left. It looked easy, it probably wasn’t, he has raced a lot this season and is a specialist at this type of racing. Next week’s race will be the Midsummer Championship event and will be 30 minutes longer. The extra distance may allow someone to attack Eastwood, breakaways are rare at Moreton but why wait for the sprint when we all know what will happen!

Another Win for Eastwood!

Another fast attacking race with numerous breaks forming but never getting more than half a lap before being brought back by the bunch. Primera Specialized once again controlling things by placing a rider or two in all of the breaks but in the end it came down to a sprint. Ian Legg proving his returning form led Jay Eastwood out for two of the 5 remaining laps, a few short attacks were pulled back then with 400 to go Jay opened up with Justin Hoy (Felt) on his shoulder and last week’s winner Phil Reynolds (Hansford Cycles) on the wheel. The only challenge was from sprint specialist Hoy and although very close, Hoy was denied with Eastwood taking win no.2 in as many weeks. Will Stephenson brought the bunch in, making it a first & third for the Primera team.

Primera/Specialized team leader Jason Eastwood said,“We have proven to be a very competitive team already and its only a few weeks into our first year. The four of us work really well together, each rider working to their strengths and being supported by the team in areas where they are not so strong. Will has come a long way and really benefiting from a team environment and despite Ian curiously suffering with poor form (now diagnosed as a tooth infection) he has laboured as our own super domestique for the team ensuring where he can that we are where we need to be in the race. Toby, a super strong breakaway specialist has had the lead outs when needed, with two wins already coming from this and his legs only getting stronger we are expecting a few more.”

Eastwood Wins at Moreton

Jason Eastwood (Primera/Specialized) won the opening round of the UK-BIKING road race series at Moreton in Dorset, his powerful sprint proving decisive. Brett Edbrook (Ridebike.co.uk) was the man pipped on the line with Luke Gray (Boboco) riding his training bike, third. A 1hour/1 lap format saw the scratch group set off first, effectively a lap behind. The fifteen strong “fast men” worked cohesively to quickly reduce the deficit and within 30 minutes the race was together. The usual flurry of attacks came to nothing and as the light faded, fast twitch muscles began to flex in anticipation. Attacking in the finishing straight, Paddy Dunn (CC Weymouth) held a gap of some 20 metres at the bell.

15 year old Matt Mildon (Mud, Sweat &Gears) tried to join Dunn but thought twice and was soon back in the wheels and with half a lap to go so was Dunn. Mildon made the right decision, riding on junior gears the youngster held off some bigger boys to take 4th. It has been a good mid-week for the Primera/Specialized team. Toby Neave won at Goodwood on Tuesday and Will Stephenson finished 2nd at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth on Wednesday. Eastwoods win leaves only Ian Legg of the four man team yet to offer a victory salute. It was a good night also for the UK-BIKING road race series. The 49 riders who signed on outnumbered both the new Bournemouth track league and all of the local clubs evening time trials.

Stephenson at the Sharp End!

Will Stephenson (Primera/Specialized) gives his side of the story from the sharp end of the race at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth…………
“ High winds and a fast pace from the off the race was going to be tough.With Jay Eastwood gagging for a win (his own words!) he went with an early attempt at a break but it didn't stick. Toby on good form from the night before, we had high hopes and when the defining 4 man break was formed both Toby and I made the cut along with 2 Peter Handsford's riders, Phil Reynolds and Harry Bulstrode later joined by Henry Newbery (gwr giant) who jumped a small gap when the break was almost brought back by vc st Raphael.
> It took a long time to gain the lap with the chasing peloton. Once back on , Jay Eastwood managed to control the race well, not letting anyone get away. Ian, who was looking strong, managed to slip off the front with Rowan Horner (vcstr) and James smith (primal) and stay away untill the end securing a 3rd rider in the top 10 with 8th overall. When it came down to it the Peter Handsford's lead out train had formed with one lap to go and they were getting ready for the sprint. With me and Toby on his wheel, Jay put in the biggest Mark Renshaw style effort, flying past the Hansford's riders and delivering us to the front in the perfect position for the sprint. Unfortunately my heavy legs let the team down and we had to settle for 2nd and 4th with a late burst from Phil Reynolds taking the win. A great effort but still a little dissappointed not to get the top spot. We will be back for more next week; hoping Jay can show us how it’s done! Great team work and good to see Ian coming back to form following some Wisdom teeth issues.”

Local Riders,Local Races

Mark Chadbourne (Ridebike.co.uk) won the opening round of the Southern XC mountain bike series at Checkendon, Kent. Racing in the veterans category Chadbourne lead from the gun and revelled in the muddy conditions. Lewis King (Beeline Cycles) managed to stay in contact with the Poole man as the rest of the field lost ground. However King had no answer to Chadbournes strong sprint for the line. Shaftesbury’s national veteran champion Paul Hopkins (Merida) had to settle for an unaccustomed third place. Darren Shepherd (Primera) finished 7th while Chadbournes team mates Jon Hayes & Ro Tilley placed 8th & 13th respectively. Round 2 of the series is at Pippingford, East Sussex on April 15th.

Russell Kober (Hainault RC) came out on top in the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 42km hilly time trial on the Lulworth course. Kober clocked 1.02.07 on the tough circuit that includes the long climb up from Wool village. Dean Robson (Somerset RC) took 2nd with 1.02.40, with Simon Berogna (VC ST Raphael) a further 21 seconds back in third spot. Gary Dighton (Poole Wheelers) led the local challenge taking 4th just 9 seconds down on Berogna.

Dighton rode for Great Britain at the Barcelona Olympics and is enjoying his racing more than ever.
Jason Eastwood (Primera-Specialized) grabbed 5th place in the sprint at a very windy Thruxton circuit race.

The new Primera Specialized team was officially launched last week and they will be targeting all of the Southern area races. Eastwoods 5th place came after he had escaped in an eight man break that included team mate Toby Neave. Matt Jones (Corley Cycles) slipped clear of the small group to take a solo win ahead of the Eastwood group. Junior Will Stephenson had opted for the 90 mile Hounslow spring road race and finished comfortably in the bunch.

Triathlete Gary Lock shut the door on the opposition when he claimed victory in the second of New Forest Cycling Club’s 2012 time trials in cool but sunny weather on Sunday.New Forest CC rider Lock, from Lymington, beat Southampton bike shop boss Gary Allan (GA Cycles) into second place by 13 seconds, clocking 32-10 for the testing 12.8-mile circuit taking in Holmsley, Brockenhurst, Rhinefield and the A35 back to Holmsley.Allan finished with 32-23 to his credit. After that it was New Forest CC all the way with John Heffernan taking third with 32-37.Colin Humm was also on form with 33-14 for fourth, Ben Boardman claimed fifth with 33-54, Stuart Peckham sixth with 34-38 and Chris Hughes seventh in 34-48.Juvenile Konner Bracher-Walsh showed true tenacity clocking 38-49 for 17th after completing the NFCC’s “Shaftesbury Century” 100-mile training ride between Ashurst and the Dorset hilltop town the previous day.The previous afternoon in north Hampshire, High Wycombe CC’s Adam Topham was the worthy winner of Farnborough & Camberley CC’s 10 powering around the breezy Bentley-Alton course in 19-54, a shade over 30mph.Second place went to Sotonian Harry Bulstrode who led the newly-formed Contre La Montre squad to the team win with a cracking 20-34, a time which beat Gabriel Martinez (VC Meudon) into third by a scant two seconds.Fourth went to Lyndhurst’s Julian Jenkinson (Contre La Montre) with 20-59, while John Sibley completed the winning team with 22-03. Local Cycling News

As usual the dog days of summer take their toll on the local racing calender. Jay Eastwood brought the curtain down on the Moreton Road Race Series,

open time trials are few and far between and club events will come to an end in a couple of weeks. James Gilfilan (Team Feat)gave the Alp D'uez Triathlon a miss, perhaps his efforts in the RAAM finally caught up with him. Perhaps not, Gilfillan finished in an excellent 4th place in round 5 of the Rudy Project TT series in Worcester.

The final round of this national series will be promoted by the Poole Wheelers. The undulating, 16 mile course through Wareham Forest and around Bere Regis was tested by Bournemouth Jubilee in their 32 mile event back in June. Claire Day (Born to Bike)looks set for her best ever placing in the British Best All Rounder Competition, (BBAR). Day is currently lying in third place in the table, Riders best times over 25,50 & 100 miles are combined to give an average speed. With times of 58.24, 1.58.39 & 4.11.45 giving an average of 24.934, Claire is in with a great chance of a medal and with her team mates handily placed the team award looks secure. Adam Topham (High Wycombe CC) easily won the Poole Wheelers club 10 on Sunday on the Ski Slope course.

His 30mph plus ride of 19.46 giving him a winning margin of 1.04 over Paul Jones (BJW) August is a lean month but September will arrive with more races, settled weather

and for those who like it when the road goes up, Hill Climbs.
