Eastwood Wins at Moreton

Jason Eastwood (Primera/Specialized) won the opening round of the UK-BIKING road race series at Moreton in Dorset, his powerful sprint proving decisive. Brett Edbrook (Ridebike.co.uk) was the man pipped on the line with Luke Gray (Boboco) riding his training bike, third. A 1hour/1 lap format saw the scratch group set off first, effectively a lap behind. The fifteen strong “fast men” worked cohesively to quickly reduce the deficit and within 30 minutes the race was together. The usual flurry of attacks came to nothing and as the light faded, fast twitch muscles began to flex in anticipation. Attacking in the finishing straight, Paddy Dunn (CC Weymouth) held a gap of some 20 metres at the bell.

15 year old Matt Mildon (Mud, Sweat &Gears) tried to join Dunn but thought twice and was soon back in the wheels and with half a lap to go so was Dunn. Mildon made the right decision, riding on junior gears the youngster held off some bigger boys to take 4th. It has been a good mid-week for the Primera/Specialized team. Toby Neave won at Goodwood on Tuesday and Will Stephenson finished 2nd at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth on Wednesday. Eastwoods win leaves only Ian Legg of the four man team yet to offer a victory salute. It was a good night also for the UK-BIKING road race series. The 49 riders who signed on outnumbered both the new Bournemouth track league and all of the local clubs evening time trials.

Dorset Miles, Bear Cross "Hardriders" Sunday Ride.

More than 20 of us at Bear Cross, bright sunshine but a strong south westerly wind made it hard at times. Down to Longham and along Ham Lane & out to Broom Hill, Higher Row & Horton Heath. On to Haythorne past Woodlands and down to Cranborne. Its a regular route for the Bear Cross group but usually tackled the other way round. Left in Cranborne, a good climb this one, before droppping down to Tidpit and across the A354 to start the long climb up to the Ox Drove above Broadchalke. A pothole broke a spoke, releasing the rear brake was a good running repair. Some brief respite through the valley to Bowerchalke and then gear selection is critical as the left hander ramps up to Cow Down Hill. Regrouping on the descent to Sixpenny Handley and it was back across the A354. The large group took casualties as the pace livened on the mucky lane through Monkton Up Wimborne and it was "noses on the brakeblocks" as we sped on to Gussage All Saints, Moor Crichel and over to Gaunts Common. Back into Wimborne and the traffic gets heavier and slower. Its a good route this one, with some good climbs, 3HRS 26 and the AVS is very respectable!

Moreton Road Race Series 2012

A meeting to discuss the Moreton Village Evening Road Race Series will be be held at 18:45 on Friday 4th November. Organiser Peter Washington will not running the events this year. All interested parties are invited to attend, to hopefully secure the future of next years series. The Lloyd Coward & Portland Port RR, promoted by CC Weymouth was the only other opportunity for riders to race on the road in Dorset this year. The absence of British Cycling events in Dorset is a cause for concern. Only two seasons ago the Wessex League put on 14 events in the region including the 3 day Tour Of Dorset which attracted over 140 entries. Moreton has been run under "The League International" rules since its first year, 2005. this year, with Washington taking a back seat, the races were succesfully run on a co-operative approach. All those wanting to race were obliged to marshall two events. This same approach may well see this popular series on the calendar in Dorset next season.

Local Cycling News

Poole Wheelers host the final round of the Rudy Project Time Trial Series on Saturday 15th October. This 8 round national series started in Essex way back in March, with the highest aggregate points score from 5 events deciding the winners. Former Bournemouth Jubilee Wheeler, Matt Bottril (I-ride.co.uk) has an unassailable lead in the men’s category, successfully defending the title he won last year.Bottril is not down to ride so winner of round 7, Wouter Sybrandy (Sigma Sport-Specialized)looks like the man to beat. Local hopes would seem to lie with James Gilfillan (Team Feat).

Triathlete Gilfillan, has had a good season against the clock and will concentrate on time trialling more next year. Michelle King (Team Jewson-MI racing) will start favourite in the ladies race whilst Poole Wheelers youngsters Ryan Weston & Harrison Fielding will go head to head in the junior's.

The technical 16 mile circuit starts in Cold Harbour nr Wareham before heading out to Bere Regis & Wool. Seniors and Espoirs will race two laps, while Ladies, juniors and Veterans will race one lap, with the first rider off at 2pm.

HEADQUARTERS – the HQ is at Sandford Middle School, Sandford Road, Wareham BH20 7BN. To get to the start (approximately 1 mile from the HQ) turn right out of the school and head towards Wareham. Straight across the first roundabout, left after about 1/3 mile and follow the road round to the start under the bridge.

REFRESHMENTS: refreshments will be available at the HQ, there will be no fixed charge but donations will be requested in aid of ‘Rob’s Velo Youth Fund’ set up in memory of the late Rob Jefferies who was killed this year whilst riding his bike.

CC Weymouth look well placed to defend the inter-club Hill climb competion they won last year. After winning both the Portland & Creech rounds, Simon Mclaughlin (BJW) leads the individual competition. However, in the all important battle of the clubs, it is the smaller West Dorset outfit leading the way. Despite the absence of last years big hitters, Preston, Moss & Cardy, Weymouth have scored points by packing out the field, embarrasing their "bigger" neighbours. Poole Wheelers & Bournemouth Jubilee need to come to the party and Bournemouth Arrow just need to come! This weeks hostilities will take place on the slopes of Kingston Hill as the Jubilee return to their traditional venue. Kingston is the shortest of all the climbs in the series. with the course record standing at a rapid 1.58. Those at the sharp end of the race will be in the "Hurt Locker" from the start, so will need to warm up well.

Will Stephenson (Bournemouth Arrow/Hotel Collingwood) ended his very succesful season with 3rd place in the Glen Longland 2 Day. The Arrow junior won the opening 2.4km uphill prolgue and finished 3rd in the 45km handicap road race. Another 3rd place in the following day's 37km TT saw Stepenson finish 3rd on GC.

The race was won by Stephen Whitewick. Racing for G A Cycles instead of his usual Utag - Yamaha team, Whitewick did all the damage in the time trial, breaking the course record to win the event. This year Glenn had secured race sponsorship from Mule Bar energy products, whose headquarters is just past the finish line of the prologue.

IN-FORM Poole-based tester Adam Topham won New Forest Cycling Club’s Ringwood Brewery sponsored 10-mile time trial in a course record 21min 34secs on Saturday.Topham, who rides for High Wycombe CC, beat the old record, set in 2002 by Clarence Wheelers’ Ray Hughes, by nine seconds.Hughes, who finished fourth in the solo race this year with 22-37, also won the tandem competition with his partner Wendy Pails in a time of 23-43, while New Forest’s own Nick O’Hara and daughter Laura took second in the tandem event with 26-00.

Second placed solo rider was Poole Wheeler Gary Dighton with 21-57, while third went to Drag2Zero’s 25-mile competition record holder Julia Shaw with 22-13.Ride of the chilly morning on the Ringwood-Sopley-Bransgore-North Kingston course came from New Forest CC’s John Heffernan who improved his personal best by another 17 seconds to 23-04 for eighth place.

With the brewery company again providing sponsorship, New Forest CC will donate £100 to Lymington’s Oakhaven Hospice.Other NFCC times: Martin Beale (second claim) 23-36, Chris Jolliffe (veteran) 27-36, Patrick Walters 28-47, Konnor Bracher-Walsh (juvenile) 28-57,

Bob Jolliffe (vet) 31-21. Juvenile Hugo Walters who was firing on all cylinders and aiming for a 23-minute time was disappointed after mechanical problems with his gears put an end to his ride midway.

Seven New Forest Cycling Club members – Roger Bacon, Peter and Carolyn Weaver, Dave Wilson, Chris Mills, Phil Underwood and Dan Mitchell – were among the 840 riders taking part in the Cyclists’ Touring Club Gridiron tourist trial organised on Sunday for the first time by New Forest CC’s John Jackson.The 60-mile event, which starts and finishes in Pilley, takes in Burley, Crow, Hyde, Godshill, Bramshaw Telegraph, Nomansland, Bramshaw, Cadnam, Woodlands, Colbury and Bucklers Hard, includes crossing numerous cattle grids; hence the name.

The recent hillclimbs have brought back hapy memories. Back in 1970 I took second place in the combined clubs' hill climb on Kingston Hill on November 4. I finished in 2-24, beaten only by Poole Wheelers' Colin(? I think) Best with 2-22. I remember quite clearly collapsing on the grassy bank immediately after the finish in absolute agony. Mind you, a pint in the Scott Arms brought me around pretty quickly and I was able to ride back to Lymington with the other lads from the Forest. Oh to be young again!

Bryce Dyer started his season with a win in the Andover Hilly 10 back in February, it ended in slightly less style at the Manchester Velodrome in the
World Masters Track Champs-"I had a bit of a mare. I pulled my bike out of the gate with a second on the clock still to go, the Commisaires said that is not possible- i proved otherwise! I came 18th (1:11) setting the worst starting lap backed up by the 2nd fastest final lap-Too Little To Late, Off Season now!!!" Louise Burman (A3crg) is also at the champioships and rides in the 500m TT today.Louise should have been riding the pursuit but a late change in the race schedule forced her to miss the race.

Bournemouth Track looks to the Future.
After more than 15 years of anticipation and the excitement of the opening Ceremony, the new Bournemouth Cycling track is well and truly open for business! Now that the dust has settled "E D" took the opportunity to have a few words with Bournemouth Cycling Centre's facility manager, Alan McRae;
How do you feel about the future of the track, now it is in use?
"For the Bournemouth Cycling Centre, the next 6 months sees the transition between the initial "Launch Period" to a summer of intense excitement and interest in all things Olympic that London 2012 will bring. To fully realise the Centre's potential there is much to do for both riders and supporters".

Exciting times indeed but the question on most locals minds is "What about racing"
Alan agrees, "This is a huge subject right now".
Obviously a lot of work is going on behind the Scenes to facilitate competitive racing at the track.
Alan goes on,"One of the biggest challenges is to put the competition infrastructure in place in time for next April. British Cycling's Mason Thomas is running a course for officials later in October and urgently needs further volunteers to come forward."

Next April?

"The weekly Track Cycling League from April 2012 means local riders can compete in exactly the same events as will take place in London in August. The next 6 months will provide riders the opportunity to fully adjust to the demands of track riding and a couple of times a month at the Saturday morning BikeFit sessions at the Centre will give all standards of riders that essential base.

Bournemouth Cycling Centre has always been keen to involve the local community it is, after all a "Local Facility" and why not? The next Bradley Wiggins could very well live on one of the nearby housing estates!

McRae is keen to emphasise this;

"Looking ahead to the next generation of cyclists, special cycling sessions for schools have already started. Before April we will strengthen those ties in the build up to the local Youth racing as part of the Track League and the South Region Youth Omnium in May."

The poor summer weather played havoc with training sessions during July And August. Far too many were lost! no one's fault but what about flood lighting to optimise use through the Winter?

"The current lack of Park Lighting at the Centre is a massive limitation on these dark nights. In the meantime, the Saturday morning BikeFit and the Sunday Accreditation provides opportunities for individual riders to "drop in" at the track. In a couple of weeks we welcome the Gillingham Wheelers who have booked their own Club session and this of course remains an option to all clubs and organisations."

Alan is still trying to get the miles in himself although admits his fitness is "Somewhat behind" Sounds like an excuse to us Mr McRae!!

Simon McLaughlin (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers) broke the course record as he flew up Portland Hill to win round 1 of the Inter-Club Hill Climb series. The course was first used in the old Milk Race back in 1972 and rises up through the village of Fortuneswell to the finish, high above Chesil Beach on the Jurassic Coast. Bournemouth Hospital Doctor, McLaughlin recorded 4mins 40 for the punishing ascent, Paddy Dunn (CC Weymouth) was also inside the old record, clocking 4.56 to take second place with Gary Dighton (Poole Wh) third in 5.05. CC Weymouth was out in force on their “home course” with 17 riders all scoring counting points in the team competition, including Heidi Gould first lady.

The West Dorset club won the title last year and tops the rankings after this opening round. This weekend Poole Wheelers promote round 2, with the riders tackling the punishing climb of Creech Hill, in the Purbecks.

Paul Jones (BJW) clocked 58.41 for 5th place in the A3crg 40km Time Trial at Fernhurst, West Sussex. Sebastian Ader (A3crg) won the event with 56.35.

Garrett Hill, Kieth Randle, Matt Hill & Shaun Amor were part of a 6 man uk-biking team that enjoyed themselves at the Wiggle Falling Leaves MTB Sportive at the weekend. The Bournemouth -Based team "ripped it up" on Saturdays 40mile mtb stage through the New Forest and again on Sundays 68 mile road stage.

FOLLOWING her 17th place in the World Women’s Time Trial Championship in Copenhagen, Bramshaw’s Julia Shaw is returning to local roads in New Forest Cycling Club’s 10 on Saturday (OCT 8).

Shaw is among the 49 competitors signed up for the club’s Ringwood Brewery-sponsored event, taking place this year on the Kingston-Sopley-Bransgore-Kingston North loop instead of the out-and-back Ringwood-Sopley road.Other top riders on the start sheet include Poole Wheelers’ super-veteran Terry Icke, High Wycombe CC’s Poole-based Adam Topham,

VC St Raphael’s Simon Berogna, Utag-Yamaha’s John Sibley and event record-holder Ray Hughes of Clarence Wheelers.

Winner there was Nino Piccoli (Team Pedal Revolution) with a fast 20-32.On the equally hot Sunday, NFCC all-rounder Martyn Dymond followed up his 35th place in the Preston Park Youth Cycling Club cyclo-cross at Brighton the previous weekend with 26th position in the veteran/junior/women’s race promoted by Southampton-based Hargroves Cycles at Lydiard Park, Swindon.His efforts in the Wessex League event earned him the award for second veteran aged 45-plus. First overall was Dave McMullen of (GWR Team) while Matt Hargroves (Hargroves Cycles) was top junior.

The Autumn/ Winter Edition

As the Road season wind's down, the leaves start to fall from the tree's and the nights draw in. Summer's late force is well and truly spent. You may be tempted to leave the bike in the shed and head to the gym or on the turbo or even down the pub!

The brief hill climb season is all over after October but there is always "Cross" if you cannot do without your racing fix!

The Autumn & Winter months are a great time to be out on the bike, a bright, crisp morning in late November is as good as any summer's day.

Yes, you may need overshoe's, windstopper gloves and mudgaurd's but most importantly you need the motivation! "E D" have put together some ideas to keep you on two wheels all through the Autumn & Winter.

Thursday nights from November meet 6.30pm at Bear Cross (1st Thursday of the month this ride is off road)check with Sunday Hardriders.

Bournemouth Jubile Wheelers Reliability Trial Series provides a good challenge. Any one of the rides is easy enough but trying to do all 4 will concentrate the mind and the legs!
Start and finish is at Merley Community Centre (BH21 1XE), Harrier Drive, off Oakley Straight, Merley
where parking, toilet facilities and light refreshments are available.

The routes are mostly on undulating small country lanes and provide a good test of rider and machine.

The routes are circuits and the direction of each is reversed each year.
Members (First and Second Claim) £1 per Reliability Trial, other riders are required to become Associate Members of the Club
and will pay £5 for all four Reliability Trials and all our Club Runs for a year. You can join on the day.
Under 18s should be accompanied by an adult please.

Saturdays: 9am from the Watersplash (ford) in Brookley Road, Brockenhurst. Leader is Barry Wootton, contact him on 07711 631826.
Sundays: 8.45am from the Wheel Inn, Sway Road, Pennington, Lymington. These are run off at a fairly rapid pace. Leader is Gary Plumb on 01590 673815.
Slower Sunday rides are expected to start in November from the Tesco Express, Gorley Road, Poulner, Ringwood. Club secretary Peter Weaver is the man to contact on 01202 822001.

Winter Quality!
Hard Riders; Bear Cross 09:30 every Sunday from the 30 October. This well established Training Ride covers between 50-75 miles and is harder than the club run with no coffee stop. All welcome.

Indoor Stuff; Turbo Training!

Turbo training nights through the winter at St Dunstans church hall in Upton. At the moment the dates are 14th and 28th Oct and 4th, 18th, and 25th November. 1900-2030.

The sessions are intended to break the boredom of turbo training alone and making them more sociable. They will start off steady due to the time of the year, getting progressively harder through the winter in preparation for next season's racing. Riders from all clubs are welcome to take part.
There will be 10 mag turbos available for those riders that want to ride to and from the sessions but riders are more than welcome to bring their own.
