MTB Southern XC round 5

Mark Chadbourne (Ridebike.co.uk/The training Room)) won the veterans race in round 5 of the Southern XC series at Frith Hill, Deepcut, Surrey. Chadbourne led from start to finish covering the The wood land course was dry for the earlier races but by late morning the showers had moved in making the course slower and slippery.

Luke Gray (Baboco CT)enjoyed his ride finishing 8th in the Elites, moving up well from the last outing on the MTB at Crow hill. A couple of mistakes on the 4th lap costing him some time and a place . The slippery conditions caught a few riders out, one with a broken leg and the other with a broken collar bone.

Mark Chadbourne (Ridebike.co.uk) won the opening round of the Southern XC mountain bike series at Checkendon, Kent. Racing in the veterans category Chadbourne lead from the gun and revelled in the muddy conditions. Lewis King (Beeline Cycles) managed to stay in contact with the Poole man as the rest of the field lost ground. However King had no answer to Chadbournes strong sprint for the line. Shaftesbury’s national veteran champion Paul Hopkins (Merida) had to settle for an unaccustomed third place. Darren Shepherd (Primera) finished 7th while Chadbournes team mates Jon Hayes & Ro Tilley placed 8th & 13th respectively. Round 2 of the series is at Pippingford, East Sussex on April 15th.

Russell Kober (Hainault RC) came out on top in the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 42km hilly time trial on the Lulworth course. Kober clocked 1.02.07 on the tough circuit that includes the long climb up from Wool village. Dean Robson (Somerset RC) took 2nd with 1.02.40, with Simon Berogna (VC ST Raphael) a further 21 seconds back in third spot. Gary Dighton (Poole Wheelers) led the local challenge taking 4th just 9 seconds down on Berogna.

Dighton rode for Great Britain at the Barcelona Olympics and is enjoying his racing more than ever.
Jason Eastwood (Primera-Specialized) grabbed 5th place in the sprint at a very windy Thruxton circuit race.

The new Primera Specialized team was officially launched last week and they will be targeting all of the Southern area races. Eastwoods 5th place came after he had escaped in an eight man break that included team mate Toby Neave. Matt Jones (Corley Cycles) slipped clear of the small group to take a solo win ahead of the Eastwood group. Junior Will Stephenson had opted for the 90 mile Hounslow spring road race and finished comfortably in the bunch.

Triathlete Gary Lock shut the door on the opposition when he claimed victory in the second of New Forest Cycling Club’s 2012 time trials in cool but sunny weather on Sunday.New Forest CC rider Lock, from Lymington, beat Southampton bike shop boss Gary Allan (GA Cycles) into second place by 13 seconds, clocking 32-10 for the testing 12.8-mile circuit taking in Holmsley, Brockenhurst, Rhinefield and the A35 back to Holmsley.Allan finished with 32-23 to his credit. After that it was New Forest CC all the way with John Heffernan taking third with 32-37.Colin Humm was also on form with 33-14 for fourth, Ben Boardman claimed fifth with 33-54, Stuart Peckham sixth with 34-38 and Chris Hughes seventh in 34-48.Juvenile Konner Bracher-Walsh showed true tenacity clocking 38-49 for 17th after completing the NFCC’s “Shaftesbury Century” 100-mile training ride between Ashurst and the Dorset hilltop town the previous day.The previous afternoon in north Hampshire, High Wycombe CC’s Adam Topham was the worthy winner of Farnborough & Camberley CC’s 10 powering around the breezy Bentley-Alton course in 19-54, a shade over 30mph.Second place went to Sotonian Harry Bulstrode who led the newly-formed Contre La Montre squad to the team win with a cracking 20-34, a time which beat Gabriel Martinez (VC Meudon) into third by a scant two seconds.Fourth went to Lyndhurst’s Julian Jenkinson (Contre La Montre) with 20-59, while John Sibley completed the winning team with 22-03. Toby Neave gave his new team, Primera-Specialized their first win of the season at the Mountbatten centre, Portsmouth. Neave made his move with four laps remaining in the senior race. The bunch hesitated and the Primera rider was clear, crossing the line alone. Neaves teammates Jason Eastwood & Will Stephenson both finished comfortably in the main field. Stephenson had ridden the BJW 20 tt the previous day, finishing 2nd.

Dave Gilham reports on the womens race.......The women’s race came down to a sprint finish and with 2 laps to go the pace went up substantially leaving 3 riders in contention for the sprint. The speed went even higher down the back straight on the final lap shedding Fran Blake (Southdown Velo / Hunter Spring Consultancy), leaving Nikki Wheeler (Wiggle) leading out the sprint with Ellie Gilham (VC ST Raphael/Waites Contracts) on her wheel. Ellie jumped coming into the home straight attacking Nikki on her outside quickly drawing level, then drawing on her track experience, used the height gained from the corner banking and came past Nikki to take the victory by a clear bike length and finished about 11th in the men’s sprint!.....Gilham has just come off a three week intensive training block,her next competitive outing is at the Thruxton motor racing circuit on Sunday 18th March.It will be her first opportunity to race with her VC St. Raphael racing team.
In the supporting men’s race Steve Moss (Bournemouth Arrow/Hotel Collingwood) had to settle for second place behind Matt Hargroves (Hargroves Cycles). Harrison Fielding (Poole Wheelers) also took second place in the youth race.

Dave Pickering (BJW) won round 4 of the inter-club series. Pickering clocked 48.16 for the 20 mile two lap circuit at Furzehill. Will Stephenson (Primera-Specialized) 48.45 took second place, with Cliff Rowe (BJW), 50.16, third.

The following day on the Wareham –Gallows Hill 15 mile circuit, Gary Dighton (Poole Wheelers) won round 5. Several riders went off course but Dighton had no problems, recording 35.03. Tim Wallis (SUCC) 37.41 finished a distant second.

VELO Club St Raphael’s Andy Rivett was the only rider to better 25-mph in New Forest Cycling Club’s first 10-mile time trial of the season. Bob Jolliffe reports.......He was on the rivet right around the tough Holmsley-A35-Burley Lawn-Burley loop which this year was made even more difficult with a cyclo-cross element thrown in for good measure where a cattle grid is being replaced in Lyndhurst Road.Veteran club member Chris Gannaway took charge of the adjoining access gate to ensure livestock did not get onto the A35 while competitors took to the mud for a few yards.Despite the short delay, Rivett took full advantage of the sunny but cool conditions to clock 23-55.

Mark Chadbourne (Ridebike.co.uk) reports on the Gorrick MTB series Rnd 3 at Crowthorne Woods in Berkshire.

A typical Gorrick course, with lots of fun, twisty singletrack with a few short sharp climbs to tire the legs. At first glance its not to tough, but if you race it, the constant accelerations out of the corners will take their toll by the end.
Liz Gilmour got her first win in the Masters women and looked very comfortable as she crossed the line. Stu King had a fantastic start that saw him leading at the end of the first lap with a small gap. However luck wasn’t on his side as he had a slow puncture and had no choice but to fix it. Stu was pleased to be back on his Top Fuel again and knows he is in shape. Mark Chadbourne had his first race back and spent it dicing with his main rivals from last year. Lacking that little bit of a racing edge he was content to watch the sprint unfold and rolled in for a satisfying 3rd. Steve Moors was sampling the Grand Vet racing for the first time this year. Finding he was very quick in the technical stuff but losing out on the fire roads meant that he was playing catch up. Despite this he recorded a great 2nd place and has the opportunity to take a look at his rivals for the season ahead. Other Locals in action included, Mark Hardwicke & Ash James (Bournemouth Arrow) & Garrett Hill & Ashley Sutton (UK Biking-Primera). Parkstone cycle clothing specialists, Prendas Ciclismo are to continue their support for one of the country’s top women’s teams.

The Matrix Fitness-Prendas Ciclismo team includes Great Britain Olympic hopefuls, Dani King and Jo Rowsell and has a full programme of national and European races. The average age of the team is just 20 with former British Champion Chris Walkers daughter, Jessie, the youngest at just 17. Mick Tarrant of Prendas said: “They all make great role models for other girls looking to get into the sport, they don’t get supported like the guys do, so it’s great for Prendas to put something back into the sport” (HARGROVES CYCLES have announced they will also be sponsoring the team this season)

Mark Chadbourne (ridebike.co.uk) struck gold at the National X country MTB championships in Richmond, North Yorkshire. Racing in the 40-45 yrs category, Poole-based Chadbourne revelled in the tough conditions; heavy rain had left the technical course covered in a slippery coating of mud. Chadbourne used his bike handling skills to build a solid lead of over 4 minutes to take the age group title.

Teammates Roland Tilley, 5th & Steve Moors 9th also made the long trip north.

Shaftsbury Mountain Biker, Paul Hopkins (MERIDA) defended his veterans title in the 40-44 yrs age group but was pushed all the way by Simon Willats (ridebike.co.uk).

“I am getting married next week and was given special permission to train for this” he joked. Willats, from Poole spends much of the year windsurfing in Australia but returns home each summer to race.

• Gregg Shrosbree (Merida) had to settle for second place in round 10 of the Moreton Evening series. Shrosbree had taken his first win the week before and was hungry for more success. The sandbanks rider had broken away with Andy Hargroves (Hargroves Cycles) with 3 miles to go in the 30 mile race. Hargroves though proved the stronger in the sprint for the line.
• Former Triathlete, Nick Spencer (Bournemouth Jubilee WH) has turned to time trialing and is fast improving. Christchurch- Based Spencer has recorded personal bests at all distances this year but cannot get into the podium positions.

He is getting close though; his time of 23.45 placed him 4th in the Sotonia cc 10 mile event at Kings Sombourne. Bryce Dyer (VC ST Raphael) 23.21 finished just ahead of Spencer in third. Winner Andy Bryson (Sotonia) recorded 22.05 for an emphatic win.

Next Sunday Spencer tackles his first 100 mile test, the Southern Counties Cycling Union event in Sussex.

A fast and furious race saw junior Will Stephenson (Bournemouth Arrow/Hotel Collingwood) taking victory right on the line.

The fast moving scratch group was taking no prisoners tonight and the race was all together with more than three laps remaining. As soon as the catch was made the attacks came thick and fast with slower riders being shelled out the back!

Simon Willats (Ridebike.co.uk) escaped with three laps to go and with ever-fit teammates Roland Tilley & Mark Chadbourne riding shotgun the move was looking good.However, Hargroves Cycles pair, Luke Gray & series leader Jason Eastwood had other ideas and by the bell Willats was back in the bunch.

Eastwood had won at the Mountbatten centre, Portsmouth, the night before and must have been licking his lips at the bunch sprint that was about to unfold. National U23 Cyclo-Cross Champion, Luke Gray gave his teammate the perfect lead out but coming up fast and unnoticed on the inside was Stephenson. The sixteen year old took it on the line from the sprint specialist Eastwood; the youngster is enjoying a great season and looked strong and confident in the dramatic finale. Tilley, consistent as ever, grabbed third in the exciting dash for the line.

Luke Gray (Hargroves Cycles) won round 6 of the summer series at Ludgershall in Wiltshire. The 40 minute + 5 lap race on the Army testing track started slowly with a few half hearted attacks. Four riders eventually got away and established a small gap. Gray, wanting some of the action attacked off the front of the peloton, taking just over a lap to join up with the lead group. Working well together they stayed away, with Gray proving the strongest in the sprint.

• Louise Burman (A3CRG) came away from the National Masters Track Championships at Newport Velodrome with a silver & bronze medal. Burman came second in the 2 KM pursuit but was disappointed with her third place in the 500 metre time trial. “I have ridden faster in training but on the day I just didn’t get it all out” she said.

Burman will be working on her starts ahead of the Europeans in Montichiari, Italy in August and the World Masters in Manchester in October. Bryce Dyer (VC ST Raphael) won a silver medal in the 1KM Time Trial. Dyer was "pretty happy" with the result. "When you are up against pure specialists even getting a medal is a result"

• Poole Wheelers trio, Richard Martin, Andy Buddle and Cliff Free recorded a time of 1.34.36. However this was only good enough for 20th place at the National Team Time Trial Championships. On a rolling 36 mile course at Rake in Hampshire, the SIS.com team was clear winners with 1.15.34.

Terry Jeffries (New Forest cc) traveled to Cirencester for the Corinium 25. The 63 year old veteran was rewarded with a season’s best time of 58.46.Jeffries was frustrated the following day however, as road works forced the cancellation of the Bristol South 10,it looked like a "float day" as well.

Para-Cycling World Champions, Barney Storey (MBE) & Sarah Storey (OBE)were both at Bournemouth Track last weekend.

Tandem Pilot, Barney, gave a master class in Tandem Track riding and was also busy constantly changing Stokers, all keen to try out the new track. Barney & Sarah have just ridden the Deloitte John o Groats to Lands End ride, raising money for the 2012 paralympics.

Sarah will soon start her build up to the Para-Cycling world Road Championships in Denmark in September. Riding with her team, Horizon Fitness/Prendas Ciclismo, she will get the best preparation possible ahead of the Worlds.

Barney will focus on track work with less racing before thoughts turn to the World Championships in Los Angeles in February 2012.

• Sally Bigham (Ergon-Topeak) won the 95km Kitzalp MTB marathon in Austria. Poole based Bigham is in good form and the 4400 metres of climbing in this tough race suited her. Her win comes on the back of a solid 6th place at the World Marathon Championships.
• Confusion reined at the Southern Area downhill Championships. Problems with the timing system in the UK BIKE PARK event at Okeford Hill meant that no results have yet been released and no champion declared.
• James Gilfillan (Team feat) will start favourite for this Sundays Jubilee 25 mile Time Trial. Poole based Gilfillan has just completed the Race across America.

The 4 man Team Feat squad finished second in the 5 day race across the USA. Expected to challenge the triathlete will be Steve Clark (Team Milton Keynes) and Tom Alliban (Revo Racing). Local hopes lie with Gary Dighton & Terry Icke (Poole Wheelers & Paul Jones (BJW)

• Win with “minimum effort” was the strategy for Will Stephenson (Bournemouth Arrow/Hotel Collingwood as the 16 year old added the Southern Region Circuit race championships to his growing list of victories. He has already won the Southern junior road race title. “This is only Stephenson’s second year of racing and his priority as a first year junior is to learn how to race.” said Alan Mcrae, Stephenson’s vastly experienced coach. Mcrae went on to say: “His first target race is the Junior RR Champs in Co Durham on July 3rd. He then has a break, with a second target at the end of August, the Junior Track Champs, Will is riding the distance events. Then 2 days later the Junior Tour of Wales.

The arrow youngster is a great prospect and will get stronger with more racing in his legs. However two punctures in the last three races have hampered his progress, with no neutral service at the Mike Rutty Memorial RR in Bristol it was "end of race"!! “I have a lot of races to fit around the exams” said Will. (Mcrae worked with Garmin –Cervelo professional, Dan Lloyd, early in his career)

MORETON VILLAGE EVENING SERIES 09/06/2011
Proving unstoppable in the sprint, Jason Eastwood (Hargroves Cycles) powered his way to another comfortable victory at Moreton village, down in Dorset. Run under The League International rules with a handicap format, the scratch group relentlessly chased down the groups in front.

The race came together with three laps of the flat, open road circuit left. All attempts to make a break came to nothing and with a lap to go everyone knew what was coming.

In previous weeks Eastwood has had help from teammates. He was on his own this evening but the result was the same. Experienced roadman/sprinter Roland Tilley (ridebike.co.uk) took second place with Julian Thacker (VC ST Raphael) third for the second week running.

More than 300 riders were in action at Crow Hill near Ringwood in round 3 of the Southern Area XC MTB Series. Whilst Steven James (Hargroves Cycles) won the elite men’s race, local interest was centered on the veteran’s event. However things did not go smoothly for the home riders. In- form Darren Shepherd (Primera) suffered a puncture and had to carry his bike to the finish

and early leader Mark Chadbourne (ridebike.co.uk) had the equivalent on his tubeless tyres. Simon Willats of the ride team did salvage some local pride with 4th place.

In the supporting races, James Horton (Primera) won the sport event, leading from start to finish.

Stuart King (ride bike) was pleased to finish 3rd in the masters race. King had spent much of the race in 2nd place before being overtaken on the last lap.

Race Face!!

• . Julia Shaw (drag2zero) from Bramshaw in the New Forest won her fourth National 25 mile Time Trial title. Shaw successfully defended her crown on a windswept course in Devon. She has already won the 10 mile title and is aiming to be selected for the World Championships in Copenhagen in September.
