Pat Dunn (CC Weymouth) was a clear win in the Poole Wheelers 27km Time Trial. Richard Horton (BJW) looked impressive, taking 2nd place at Ludgershall circuit race.

Paul Hopkins (Merida UK) was the best placed of a host of local riders in the Gorrick Spring MTB series. Hopkins took 2nd in the super vet category. The racing season is well & truly here. Local riders will be in action again this weekend as the racing starts to come thick & fast.

Saturday sees the final round of the Ludgershall Series. While on Sunday the 40nd Severn Bridge Road Race will give Will Stephenson & Ian Legg (Primera-Specialized) an early season test.

The Halfords Tour Series visits the English Riviera with a visit to Torquay on June the 5th. The Halfords Tour Series will return to the South West this June, as Torquay gets set to hold the first ever round of the unique team based Series. Britain’s top professional cyclists, led by defending champions Rapha Condor Sharp, will be in Torquay on Tuesday 5th June, for an action packed evening of racing to conclude the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend. Highlights from the Torquay round of The Halfords Tour Series will be shown on ITV4 the following evening.

CC Weymouth Open 10 is on 7th April this year. The P451 is a lovely course as most of you will already know. What we lack in ski ramps and dual carriageways we more than make up for with sunshine, fun and cheerful dispositions. We have a £50 first prize, spot prizes with an Easter theme and other prizes depending on the level of entries - we seek to make no profit on this event so the more entries the better prizes. We have also rolled forward all the non-awarded prizes from previous years and now have £199 on offer for breaking the course record. I know most riders are not going to come close to such a time but it might mean we get some top timetriallists coming along. By the way, just in case it makes you keener to enter our Open: For our club events we have always charged other clubs more than we charge CCW riders. This is no longer the case and all club riders will be charged the same this season regardless of what club you belong to. Price will be £2 for our club events as we have decided to absorb the CTT levy increase.

Terry Icke "Goes to the Well" to hang onto to Gary Dighton's wheel

Terry Icke & Gary Dighton (Poole Wheelers)won the VTTA (Wessex) Grand Prix Des Gentlemen 2-up 25. Icke & Dighton were clearly "up for it" with Dighton making his racing partner, 67 year old Icke suffer just to hold the wheel. The pair deserved the win and with only a few more races left, it was a timely result. The Poole Wheelers duo will both finish their seasons with the final round of the Rudy Project national circuit series,on the 15th October, promoted by their own club. Bryce Riglar (CC Weymouth)clocked 22.18 for 8th place in the Yeovil CC 10,

team mate Pat Dunn finished 6 secs back in 10th spot. Darren Lewis (Poole Wh) 23.05, Loiuise Burman (A3crg) 25.55 & Stuart Carrington, 26.31, were the other locals in action.

Will Stephenson (Bournemouth Arrow/Hotel Collingwood) came 5th in the Stockbridge Down Road Race. The tough 65 mile race was won by Ben Stockdale (Team Qoroz) who book-ended his year nicely having won the Perfs Pedal race way back in February.

Shaftsbury-Based Paul Hopkins (Merida) wrapped up the Veterans title in the final round of the British Mountain Bike XC series.

Held at Newnham Park Plymouth the tough, technical course put paid to the hopes of many including Winton’s Carol Tilley (Ridebike.co.uk) who crashed and was forced to withdraw with a shoulder injury.

Team Mates Roland Tilley, Mark Chadbourne & Steve Moors also struggled with the course and finished well down on Hopkins.

Kobi Joyce (Big Daddy/Avent) successfully defended his British BMX title at the National Championships in Cheddar, Somerset. 8 year old Joyce, who recently won the National Points series, seems to thrive on the pressure of the big events and secured the title in front of a 3,000 strong crowd. Having won all 4 qualifying rounds and the semi-final, the Branksome youngster led from the gun in the final. As well as his two titles, Joyce is now ranked No1 in his age group in the UK. After his winning ride Kobi was keen to thank his Team Manager, Martin Baxter. Baxter took on Kobi and his younger brother Ryder this year and "has helped us loads"

NEW Forest Cycling Club veteran all-rounder Martyn Dymond kicked off his cyclocross season with 35th place in a substantial field of 93 at Brighton on Sunday.Dymond, 48, who has been turning in some good time trial performances towards the latter part of the season, was the only Wessex League rider to make the journey east to the London League event promoted by Preston Park Youth Cycling Club at Happy Valley Park.Winner was VC Londres’ Jules Birks who finished 2-46 ahead of Jack Finch of VC Deal, who also picked up the junior award.New Forest CC 50-year-old veteran John Heffernan powered his way through the stiff southerly wind to win Sotonia CC’s club 10 on the Lyndhurst/Ipley Cross course on Sunday morning.Despite the tough breeze on the long outward leg to Leygreen, Heffernan nipped another eight seconds from his best reducing it to 23-21.Second place went to the promoting club’s Colin Yeates with 24-16, while New Forest’s Gary Lock took third with 24-35 from GA Cycles’ Richard Blake (24-54).

Mechanical problems put paid to the chances of a fast time by New Forest’s Terry Jefferies and VC St Raphael’s Martin Beale in the Wessex Veteran Time Trials Association Grand Prix des Gentlemen 25 organised by Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers near Wool in Dorset.Jefferies calculated they were on a 58-minute ride when he looked around to find Beale had disappeared after exiting a roundabout at about 15 miles. However, after turning and making running repairs to Beale’s collapsing gear cassette, the pair still returned a time of 1-3-14. At the Mountbatten Centre in Alexandra Park, Portsmouth, New Forest CC’s crack juvenile Hugo Walters finished in the bunch in the 50 minutes plus two laps Elite/First and Second Category circuit race.Andy Betteridge and John Heffernan also finished in the main field in the Third and Fourth category race over 40 minutes plus two laps.Former New Forest CC juvenile Jon Dibben (Hargroves Cycles) from Totton was best British performer in the junior time trial taking eighth place, 48.04sec behind gold medallist, Denmark’s Mads Wurtz.Dibben finished the 126km junior road race in the main field in 34th position, just three seconds behind the small group containing winner Pierre-Henri Lecuisinier of France. (Dibben won Bronze in the mens 4km pursuit at the National Track Championships in Manchester this week with 4.34.201)

French Letter PT3

They tell me it is a fashionable problem for racing cyclists. I broke my collar bone in a Kermess race in Belgium on Saturday 17th September.
The race was at Ertvelde, 50 m 14 laps, for over 70s. I touched a wheel after coming out of a corner on the fifth lap. It was a concrete road, and although I managed to roll over to ease the fall the road was harder than me. Two other riders came off with me including one woman.

The surgeon at Ghent said "six weeks off the bike" The surgeon in France said "Ce n'est pas une grande chose." (It is not a big thing.) It will heal in three weeks. Obviously surgeons are better in France.
I was lying second on points in the over 70's classification in Belgium, but as I cannot finish the season I should end up third or fourth now.
As you can imagine there were a few problems being carted off to hospital from a bike race in a foreign country when you are on your own. One of the questions from the ambulance man was "Have you a woman?"
There were three English lads riding at Ertvelde, they and a friendly Dutchman rallied round sorted out my possesions, moved my car, picked me up from hospital, and put me up for the night.
Next day I drove gently the 260 km to my flat in France with one arm.
Now I am trussed up like a chicken ready for the oven, but the bone appears to healing and movement is returning.
After 71 years of being a serious cyclist apart from cracking a rib, this is the first time I have broken a bone.
I hope to be competing next season, but will see how it goes.
In Belgium they send a bill for the use of the ambulance. It has been known for riders to hide in a ditch after they came off to avoid having to go in the ambulance and pay.

Mark Chadbourne (ridebike.co.uk) struck gold at the National X country MTB championships in Richmond, North Yorkshire. Racing in the 40-45 yrs category, Poole-based Chadbourne revelled in the tough conditions; heavy rain had left the technical course covered in a slippery coating of mud. Chadbourne used his bike handling skills to build a solid lead of over 4 minutes to take the age group title.

Teammates Roland Tilley, 5th & Steve Moors 9th also made the long trip north.

Shaftsbury Mountain Biker, Paul Hopkins (MERIDA) defended his veterans title in the 40-44 yrs age group but was pushed all the way by Simon Willats (ridebike.co.uk).

“I am getting married next week and was given special permission to train for this” he joked. Willats, from Poole spends much of the year windsurfing in Australia but returns home each summer to race.

• Gregg Shrosbree (Merida) had to settle for second place in round 10 of the Moreton Evening series. Shrosbree had taken his first win the week before and was hungry for more success. The sandbanks rider had broken away with Andy Hargroves (Hargroves Cycles) with 3 miles to go in the 30 mile race. Hargroves though proved the stronger in the sprint for the line.
• Former Triathlete, Nick Spencer (Bournemouth Jubilee WH) has turned to time trialing and is fast improving. Christchurch- Based Spencer has recorded personal bests at all distances this year but cannot get into the podium positions.

He is getting close though; his time of 23.45 placed him 4th in the Sotonia cc 10 mile event at Kings Sombourne. Bryce Dyer (VC ST Raphael) 23.21 finished just ahead of Spencer in third. Winner Andy Bryson (Sotonia) recorded 22.05 for an emphatic win.

Next Sunday Spencer tackles his first 100 mile test, the Southern Counties Cycling Union event in Sussex.

Primera Sportive - Association with the Steve Bernard Foundation

Sportives are fast becoming the most popular cycling endurance events around with hundreds springing up all over Europe. The Primera Sportive offers riders the chance to take on a challenging but exciting course around the Purbecks whilst experiencing the excellent atmosphere of a Primera event. There will be a 50mile and a 100 mile course taking in the gorgeous Purbeck and Dorset countryside.

Portland Port & Lloyd Coward Memorial Road Race

Clinton Casteller (I-TEAM CC) outsprinted National Vets mountain bike champion, Paul Hopkins (Merida) to win this CC Weymouth promoted event on the Gallows Hill/Monkey World circuit. The flat course offered little to those adventurous enough to try to escape the bunch.

A sprint always looked likely in this 3rd category, 45 mile race, with the gradual drag up to the line the only real place to string out the peloton.

With a couple of miles left the bunch slowed in readiness for the sprint and a touch of wheels brought down 6 or so riders. Fortunately all remounted with no serious damage, Casteller managed to stay out of trouble to take his first win on the road. Seventeen year old Jake Wilde (Salisbury Tri Club)prefers cycling to swimming and running and rode well to win the junior award.

I caught up with the happy winner at the HQ, "Its my first win and i am very happy. We came here as a team of 5 so we definately had ambitions of doing something. We came with the plan that if there was going to be someone up the road we would send one or two of the other guys and we would keep myself back for the sprint. I ask where the plan was hatched,"in the car park"? Yes! we talked about it in the week and formalised things in the morning. The crash happened two wheels from me so i was lucky to get round it"

Dorset Rough Riders MTB Enduro

Paul Hopkins (Merida UK), stamped his authority on this 2 hour Enduro deep in Wareham forest on the first lap. Breaking away with teammate Gregg Shrosbree the Merida pair worked well together. However Shrosbree was unlucky to puncture and by the time he had rejoined the race he was left salvaging pride. Hopkins pushed on alone and steadily built a lead of over 4 minutes;

Hopkins & Shrosbree looked comfortable.

Roland Tilley (ridebike.co.uk) & James Horton (Primera) chased hard but could make no impression. The reigning national Veterans Points Champion, Hopkins, looked very comfortable on the mix of Single track, fire trails and dusty gravel paths that made up the bone dry course.

The long drag up to the finish line broke more than a few dreams but Hopkins looked very smooth. "I am racing elite in the SAMS series this year To bring me on a bit more” said the 40 year old Hopkins; he went on “I am as strong as I have ever been”. “We did say before the race we (Greg) would work together because it was quite windy, Gregg is getting really strong, and if he had not punctured it would have been close. I have been getting some more training in and it makes a difference. The next couple of months are pretty busy, I am getting married in July and I am on a 6 week pass!” he joked. Hopkins, who lives in Shaftesbury, is looking to win both the season long point’s competition & the national vet’s title.

Roland Tilley (ridebike.co.uk) & James Horton (Primera) rode most of the race together. Tilley was doing most of the work but could not shake Horton till halfway round the last lap. The experienced roadman/sprinter, twice a winner of the South Division Road Race Title, spends most of his time Off-Road these days and is also targeting the National Championships. Tilley had finished 2nd at the Moreton RR on Thursday evening.

Leading lady was Liz Gilmour,(ridebike.co.uk), who held off the challenge of Heidi Gould. (cc Weymouth) with Carol Tilley (ridebike.co.uk) rounding out the top three. Dorset Rough Riders put on a cracking event, with enthusiastic marshals, free post race massage and plenty of tea and cake on offer.
