Sandie Radford Memorial Road Race

After dominating the race, Rowan Horner (VC ST Raphael/Waites Contracts) duly won the Sandie Radford Memorial Road Race at Nomansland in the New Forest. Outnumbered but never outclassed, Horner covered every move, chased when he had to and attacked when he could. The Michael Radford/G A Cycles sponsored 35 mile race started in bright sunshine but dark skies always threatened, hailstones peppered the bunch and a side wind annoyed. Andy Bryson (Peter Hansford Cycles) & Ian Legg (Primera Specialized) escaped on the first lap across the forest heath, these two held a lead of 15 seconds as they headed out to the far turn at Brook.

Horner, last year’s winner Harry Bulstrode & Phil Reynolds, (Peter Hansford Cycles) Josh Day (Off Camber) and Toby Neave (Primera/Specialized) formed a select chasing group and already the rest were out of it.

Horner was the next to attack, forcing the chasing six to work hard to bring him back.

On the first climb of Pipers Waite hill up to the finish, Horner put the pressure on and Legg was the first to be distanced with the rest hanging on.

The Hansford Cycles trio of Bulstrode, Reynolds and Bryson had the numerical advantage but Horner had the legs. Comfortably answering all the questions the experienced Waites rider attacked on the final climb and only Reynolds could respond. Reynolds dug deep but Horner was just too strong. Bulstrode took third at 18 seconds with Bryson 4th.

Antelope "Two Up 10"

“We didn’t get where we are by not racing in the rain” said Glen Longland at the prize presentation. It was a gentle dig at the few non-starters for the deluged Antelope RT 10. To be fair to those that did not trouble the timekeeper it was an awful morning, one perhaps better spent on the turbo trainer. Longland was celebrating 40 years of racing with a double promotion on the P140, Romsey- Brook course in Hampshire, scene of his first Open event back in 1971. Saturday’s solo “10” had enjoyed fine weather, with Harry Bulstrode (Contre la Montre) setting a new course record with 21.38. Sunday’s two-up 10 was a not so lucky; the forecast was for heavy rain and heavy rain it was. Bulstrode made it a weekend double, riding with teammate Andy Bryson; the pair was some 19 seconds slower than Bulstrode’s time of the previous day. "It was quite frightening, i couldn't see, i had this silly visor on and it got steamed up" commented Bulstrode. Reminiscing about the early years Longland said “I rode my first event on this course; it was the other way round though with a dead turn. We never had HQs it was just a lay-by, we just put a table up, some calor gas and made a cup of tea” There were more races back then, regular ones, you could do a time trial and a road race on the same weekend, it’s just about having a go, no one has a go at road racing any more. I rode my 24 inch front wheel yesterday just to celebrate! Longland has won the BBAR and more than a few National Titles as well as being a successful road racer, he rode the old Eastern Block Peace Race three times. What gives him the most satisfaction? “The12 hours, it was my favourite event, I enjoyed it, then it was the Peace Race” Glenn had ridden today’s event with another old champion John Woodburn (VC Meudon) recording 24.58, had he enjoyed it? “Yes, John apologised for not coming through, he said to me do you think you will still be racing at my age, 75, I said yes, if I am alive, John.”

Glenn Longland "Mule Bar" 2 Day Downton Classic

Stephen Whitewick (G A Cycles) won the fifteenth edition of the Glenn Longland 2 day at Downton in Hampshire. Whitewick had entered the New Forest Brewery 10 but not early enough, so his entry was returned. Undeterred, Whitewick signed on for some unacustomed road racing, albiet weighted towards the testers.

Will Stephenson (Bournemouth Arrow/Hotel Collingwood) added to his impressive palmares this season by winning the opening 2.4 mile prologue. Stephenson climbed Botley down in 4.04 to win the opening stage by 6 seconds from Tim Wallis (Southampton Uni), Andy Bryson (Cannodale Racing) claimed third , a further 4 seconds back.

The following 42km handicap road race was won by Tony Kiss (Stratford CC) after a frantic chase across the heathland roads of the New Forest.

Wallis held off Stephenson for second place. The Bournemouth Arrow Junior held a slender 6 second lead on GC at the end of stage 2, Whitewick finished in the bunch without losing time and was licking his lips at the thought of the following day's 37km TT. Guesting for G A Cycles, the utag-yamaha rider has had a very good year, a bronze medal in the National 100 but 8th place in the National 10 gives Whitewick most satisfaction, and there is "more to come"

The predictable course record ride the following morning on the sporting 37km route, saw whitewick take his final win of the year. Harry Bulstrode (Cannondale Racing) took second place and overtook Stephenson in the general classification. It was another impressive performance from the 17 year old, 1st on stage 1 & 3rd on stages 2&3, confirming his promise.

Multi-National time trial champion Glenn Longland puts on a great little race with a great atmosphere that keeps people coming back year after year.

Mark Chadbourne (ridebike.co.uk) struck gold at the National X country MTB championships in Richmond, North Yorkshire. Racing in the 40-45 yrs category, Poole-based Chadbourne revelled in the tough conditions; heavy rain had left the technical course covered in a slippery coating of mud. Chadbourne used his bike handling skills to build a solid lead of over 4 minutes to take the age group title.

Teammates Roland Tilley, 5th & Steve Moors 9th also made the long trip north.

Shaftsbury Mountain Biker, Paul Hopkins (MERIDA) defended his veterans title in the 40-44 yrs age group but was pushed all the way by Simon Willats (ridebike.co.uk).

“I am getting married next week and was given special permission to train for this” he joked. Willats, from Poole spends much of the year windsurfing in Australia but returns home each summer to race.

• Gregg Shrosbree (Merida) had to settle for second place in round 10 of the Moreton Evening series. Shrosbree had taken his first win the week before and was hungry for more success. The sandbanks rider had broken away with Andy Hargroves (Hargroves Cycles) with 3 miles to go in the 30 mile race. Hargroves though proved the stronger in the sprint for the line.
• Former Triathlete, Nick Spencer (Bournemouth Jubilee WH) has turned to time trialing and is fast improving. Christchurch- Based Spencer has recorded personal bests at all distances this year but cannot get into the podium positions.

He is getting close though; his time of 23.45 placed him 4th in the Sotonia cc 10 mile event at Kings Sombourne. Bryce Dyer (VC ST Raphael) 23.21 finished just ahead of Spencer in third. Winner Andy Bryson (Sotonia) recorded 22.05 for an emphatic win.

Next Sunday Spencer tackles his first 100 mile test, the Southern Counties Cycling Union event in Sussex.

Sportives are fast becoming the most popular cycling endurance events around with hundreds springing up all over Europe. The Primera Sportive offers riders the chance to take on a challenging but exciting course around the Purbecks whilst experiencing the excellent atmosphere of a Primera event. What's more, thanks to our partnership with the Steve Bernard Foundation, all the money raised from the ride goes straight to local sport!
