CC Weymouth Club Hilly 18 P451/18

Steve Pink writes....“Records are there to be broken” so the saying goes, and CC Weymouth’s own Paddy Dunn proved just that as he put in a stunning ride to take a huge 1:28 off of, World age group Duathalon champion, Ian Cardy’s previous best mark from 2010. Paddy has been having a stellar season and is continuing to find more speed every week. Having taken time out to start a family a couple of seasons ago Paddy rode sparingly last year. However after putting in the hard miles over the winter and coupled with a new TT bike, this season Paddy is starting to show again what he’s really all about!

The condition last night were almost perfect and quick times were seen all round with several PBs being posted. A great ride from Greg Parker, a MTB and road racing convert, who put in a cracking time despite still suffering from a mammoth ride on Sunday. New member Matthew Pye is also starting to see the fruits of his training efforts as his times start to tumble and the ever smiling David Butt going under the 50 minute mark for the first time.

Two riders who were not quite so lucky were Charlie Lawson and Myself. At least Charlie made it three quarters of the way round before he punctured, I never even got to the start line. The frustration of missing out on such a quick night was clear to see on both our faces, however I found my way to the finish line to keep our faithful time keeper, Justin, company and roar on the guys through the last few yards!,

Local Riders,Local Races

Pat Dunn (CC Weymouth) was a clear win in the Poole Wheelers 27km Time Trial. Richard Horton (BJW) looked impressive, taking 2nd place at Ludgershall circuit race.

Paul Hopkins (Merida UK) was the best placed of a host of local riders in the Gorrick Spring MTB series. Hopkins took 2nd in the super vet category. The racing season is well & truly here. Local riders will be in action again this weekend as the racing starts to come thick & fast.

Saturday sees the final round of the Ludgershall Series. While on Sunday the 40nd Severn Bridge Road Race will give Will Stephenson & Ian Legg (Primera-Specialized) an early season test.

The Halfords Tour Series visits the English Riviera with a visit to Torquay on June the 5th. The Halfords Tour Series will return to the South West this June, as Torquay gets set to hold the first ever round of the unique team based Series. Britain’s top professional cyclists, led by defending champions Rapha Condor Sharp, will be in Torquay on Tuesday 5th June, for an action packed evening of racing to conclude the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend. Highlights from the Torquay round of The Halfords Tour Series will be shown on ITV4 the following evening.

Start in Holme Lane near the Springfield Hotel then via West Holme, East Lulworth, climb Whiteways Hill, descend Steeple, Church Knowle, Corfe Castle, Wareham bypass to finish in West Lane near the Springfield Hotel.Entry on the line.

CC Weymouth Open 10 is on 7th April this year. The P451 is a lovely course as most of you will already know. What we lack in ski ramps and dual carriageways we more than make up for with sunshine, fun and cheerful dispositions. We have a £50 first prize, spot prizes with an Easter theme and other prizes depending on the level of entries - we seek to make no profit on this event so the more entries the better prizes. We have also rolled forward all the non-awarded prizes from previous years and now have £199 on offer for breaking the course record. I know most riders are not going to come close to such a time but it might mean we get some top timetriallists coming along. By the way, just in case it makes you keener to enter our Open: For our club events we have always charged other clubs more than we charge CCW riders. This is no longer the case and all club riders will be charged the same this season regardless of what club you belong to. Price will be £2 for our club events as we have decided to absorb the CTT levy increase.

Poole Wheelers 27km TT

Pat Dunn (cc Weymouth) opened his account for the season, with a clear win in the Poole Wheelers 27km TT. Run on the Gallows Hill-Worgret Heath circuit, the event was the first of 6 in an Inter-club hardriders competition. Dunn,with 38.06 was nearly a minute clear of second placed man, Steve Birtwistle (PW) 39.04.

Promising Junior, Harrison Fielding (PW) has spent the winter riding the track at Calshot and has plenty of speed in the legs. His time of 39.24 was good enough for third place, edging out teammate Leighton Girling by just 1 second.

The Gallows Hill circuit has a little of everything, country lanes, wider main roads, a few lumps and a long drag up to the chequered board that never seems to come. Thirty three riders signed on and the the bright sunshine and ever so gentle breeze had thoughts turning to spring.

Portland Hill Climb

Simon McLaughlin (Bournemouth Jubilee WH) won the CC Weymouth Hill Climb, making the punishing Portland climb look easy. In warm, sunny conditions, McLaughlin recorded a time of 4.40, 16 seconds clear of in- form Paddy Dunn (CC Weymouth) with Poole Wheelers fast man Gary Dighton in third with 5.05.

The steep ascent rises up through the village of Fortuneswell to the finish high above Chesil Beach on the Jurassic Coast. The Portland event is the opening round of the annual, inter- club series and McLaughlin has laid his cards on the table in his bid for the individual title.

CC Weymouth started the defense of their team title well, placing three riders in the top ten. It promises to be an exciting competition with both the Poole Wheelers and Bournemouth Jubilee looking strong.

Next week the battle resumes on Creech Hill in the Purbecks, promoted by the Poole Wheelers.

Bournemouth Jubilee runs round 3 on the twisting Kingston Hill before the final showdown on the slopes of Whiteways Hill, on the Army ranges in the Purbecks.
