Title race a Shaw thing
BRAMSHAW’S unassailable Julia Shaw won her fourth consecutive national 25-mile time trial championship on Tees-side on Saturday in a rapid 54min 57sec.It was the fifth 25-mile women’s title for the www.Drag2Zero rider and follows her recent sixth consecutive championship victory over 10 miles.Ciara Horne of Brotherton Cycles took silver almost two minutes in arrears with 56-48 from Rebecca Slack (London Dynamo) with 57-14 for bronze.Another multiple national champion, Michael Hutchinson (In-Gear Quickvit Trainsharp), fended off top opposition from Sky Pro Cycling’s Alex Dowsett to take gold in the men’s competition with a championship record time of 47-01, slicing 14 seconds off his own record set in 2005.Mind you, Dowsett was close, powering around in 47-08 for silver, while the bronze medal went to Shaw’s teammate Matthew Bottrill with 48-36.Poole-based High Wycombe CC member Adam Topham was best-placed southern rider with 51-03 for 13th place while Contre la Montre’s James Gilfillan was 31st with 52-24.
Heffernan hews minute from “personal”New Forest Cycling Club’s John Heffernan was overjoyed to hack 1min 2sec from his PB 10 in the wind-blown Team Axiom event between Liss and Liphook on Saturday.“It was hard coming back. It wasn’t just the headwind, but there was a hill I didn’t notice going out,” said John after clocking 21-48, which earned him 14th place in a quality field.Winner was Nicolas Hutchings (GS Grupetto) who got close to course record with his 30-mph-plus winning time of 19-14.VC St Raphael pair Simon Tout and Steve Walkling were second and third with 19-51 and 20-11, while their clubmate Martin Beale, a second-claim New Forest CC member was 22nd with 22-13.Other Team Axiom 10 times: Terry Icke (Poole Whrs) 20-56, Cliff Rowe (Bournemouth Jubilee Whrs) 22-10, Gary Tuskin (Poole Whrs) 22-45, Alan Sharpen (Sotonia CC) 25-53, Bob Jolliffe (New Forest CC) 27-53, Chris Summers (Sotonia) 28-00.Walkling moved up to head the result board in the following morning’s Team Axiom 25 with a quick 51-39 to beat Kingston Whrs’ Steve Irwin into second by 55 seconds. Chris clocks second best 10! New Forest’s Chris Hughes was happy to finish a chilly Bournemouth Jubilee Whrs 10 at Upton on Sunday with a time of 24-13, his second-best-ever, while clubmate Bob Jolliffe slowed from the previous day to 29-45. Second claim NFCC member Martin Beale (VC St Raphael) finished with 23-16.Victory went to Poole Wheeler Gary Dighton with 21-12. He was followed by clubmate Andy Buddle (21-30) and Tom Alliban (Revo Racing) with 21-32.
Close to best! NFCC’s Stuart Peckham was near his best 25 time when he clocked 1-02-48 in a Poole Wheelers’ club event at Upton the previous weekend. First went to Andrew Matthews of Southdown Velo with 57-59 from Martin Aldridge of the promoting club with 1-00-30 and Bournemouth Jubilee’s Philip Evans (1-02-05).
Weather took toll! Rain led to the abandonment of New Forest CC 30 last Tuesday.
Another inter-club in offing! New Forest CC members are needed to represent their club in the second inter-club competition of the season: against Crabwood CC, which is promoting the first round, a 15-miler on the P164 at Lyndhurst on Thursday, June 31. Event HQ is Matley car park and the first rider will be away at 7.01pmThe return round, a 10 hosted by NFCC, is also on the P164 on Tuesday, July 10. HQ is Parc Pale and start time is 7.01pm.

New Forest CC "The Brewery 10"

Adam Topham (High Wycombe CC) broke Ray Hughes’s 9 year old course record to win the New Forest CC 10. Topham lead all the way to clock 21.34, taking 9 seconds off the old mark. The P303 heads south from Ringwood turns at the Woolpack Inn, before heading back through the lanes, a circuit with no reputation for speed. In-form Gary Dighton (Poole Wheelers) looked impressive but had to settle for 2nd place with 21.57.

Julia Shaw (Drag2zero) stopped the clock on 22.13 for third place and of course first Lady. Like most of the field Shaw’s season is nearly over, the goal of selection for the world championships in Copenhagen achieved. Happy? “Yes, top ten would have been nice” The slight dissatisfaction in her voice is a good sign. No specific targets have been identified as yet for next year; Shaw’s biggest dilemma appears to be “Two weeks off the bike or two months”

Topham too is just about finished “the Rudy Project & the Brighton Mitre 25” are all that’s left of his season. Last Years winner, Steve Whitewick (utag –Yamaha) entered too late and was disappointed not to get a ride. Whitewick, however would get his racing fix later that day in the Glenn Longland 2 day.

The New Forest 10 is sponsored by the local Ringwood Brewery and the prize winners had earn’t their beer. The brewery produce an award winning ale called “Old Thumper” a sobriquet that could fondly be applied to Ray Hughes (Clarence Wheelers), Ray seems to have been around forever and clearly loves his racing, along with stoker Wendy Pails, they won the tandem event with 23.43. Hughes then went off last in the solo competition, his 22.37, good enough for 4th place!

Local Cycling Stuff

Dorset’s Daniel Lloyd (Garmin-Cervelo) had to settle for 10th place at the Tour of Britain. The Bournemouth-Based professional had quietly worked his way up to 3rd spot in this 8 day race, picking up time bonuses to improve his position. However the 10km time trial on the split final stage saw Lloyd lose time and slip down the general classification. The fast, flat circuit in the heart of the capital passed Big Ben and the Tower of London and was won by Team Sky’s Alex Dowsett. Dutchman, Lars Boom of the Rabobank team won the overall race after taking the lead on stage 2. Lloyd has a busy end of season with races in France and Italy still to come. Talking to “E D” he said; “I have Franco-Belge starting next Thursday, then Paris-Tours, Piemonte and the Tour Of Lombardy, so a fair way to go yet”

Gray & Bjergfelt.

National U23 Cyclo-Cross Champion, Luke Gray (Hargroves Cycles) got his winter season off to a great start, winning the South West League event in Devon. Gray had a race long battle with Will Bjergfelt (Motorpoint Procycling),the pair swapped the lead several times as they lapped the field. Bergfelt slipped whilst passing a back marker on the last lap and Gray siezed his chance.

It was a good test for the Broadstone-based rider. The previous day he had finished 3rd in the opening round of the Wessex League at Cowley, Oxford. Gray will be basing himself in Oudenaarde in Belgium for the Cross Season and will be competing in the GVA series and several other high ranking cross races. Gray will return for selected national races and intends to defend his U23 title at the National Championships.

In-Form Paul Jones (BJW) was narrowly beaten into 2nd place for the 2nd week running.

A season’s best time of 52.36 saw Jones finish only 40 secs down on Former National Champion Julian Jenkinson (Utag-Yamaha).

Terry Icke (Poole Wh) claimed 3rd with 55.32 in the Sotonia 25 mile event at Andover

NEW Forest CC crack juvenile Hugo Walters took a deserved fourth place in a third category adult circuit race at Alexandra Park, Portsmouth and followed through with a win in his club’s hill climb competition.Since having gained special permission to race with the seniors, Hugo, who is now 15 years old, has raced against Elite and first and second category riders at Alexandra Park, his best in those quality bunches being a 27th place.Then last week he competed in a third cat event, over 40 minutes plus three laps. In the final minutes Mitch Webber of Andover Wheelers broke away from the main field. Hugo and two others launched an attack to bridge the gap. Despite gritting their teeth and giving their all, they could not catch the flying Webber. But Hugo ended up fourth, his best placing in an adult field.In the third category race, New Forest CC teammates, dad Patrick Walters took 10th place and Graham Jones seventh.Flyweight Hugo had wings on Buddles Hill and then Ogdens Hill near Fordingbridge in New Forest CC’s hill climb on Sunday.He clocked 1min 44.7sec on Buddles to beat Jamie Pope by 13.3sec. Sam Jackson was third with 2-2.6. Shortly afterwards Hugo nipped up Ogdens Hill in 37.2sec to beat his father into second by four seconds.Pope, last year’s overall winner, failed to start at Ogdens. In the Sotonia CC open 25-mile between Andover and Popham on Sunday, John Heffernan recorded another personal best of 56-25 for eighth place, beating second claim member Martin Beale (VC St Raphael) into ninth by 25secs.

Gary Lock, who has recently produced acrop of fast 10 times, also clocked a "personal" dipping underthe hour for the first time with 59-42 for 14th.

Spare a thought for Forest veteran Terry Jefferies who punctured twice, once while warming up and then again six miles into the competition, Unsurprisingly, he did not finish.

Julia Shaw (Drag2Zero) placed 17th in the Elite Women's Time trial at the World Road Championships in Copenhagen.

On the flat, rain soaked course Shaw, who lives in Bramshaw in the New Forest clocked 38.57 for the 27.8km. Judith Arndt took the Title & Gold medal with atime of 37.07
Ashurst’s Jon Dibben (Hargroves Cycles), a former New Forest CC juvenile, will represent Great Britain in the 126km junior title race to be held on Saturday.His teammates will be Owain Doull, Matthew Holmes, Sam Lowe and Alistair Slater. (First year junior Dibben finished 8th in the 27.8km Time trial on Tuesday)

I was saddened to hear of the death of Eddie Beck (Poole Wheelers) last week. Eddie was always good company when marshalling at Holes Bay or some other windswept junction. Eddie was also a keen follower of "E D" and was always very supportive. See you up the road Eddie Beck.

LOCAL CYCLING NEWS

"Nothing short of a Breakthrough" was how coach, Alan Mcrae described Will
Stephensons (Bournemouth Arrow/Hotel Collingwood) performance in the Junior Tour of Wales. Stephenson backed up a fantastic 2nd place on Stage 4 with a super strong ride to take 9th place on Stage 5. This final stage included the tough climb of the Tumble Mountain in the Brecon Beacons. Sixteen year old Stephenson claimed 7th place on the overall general classification, Will also finished 6th in the points and 5th in the King of the Mountains.

The Tour of Wales is the toughest junior race on the domestic calender, a short hilly time trial, followed by "lumpy" 72km road stage make up day 1. Stages 3 & 4 on day 2 however are very different, a short 30km circuit race followed by fast, flat, course, including some dual carriageway. The final stage is one for the climbers, 95km of tough terrain in the National Park, sees the gaps open in the GC. Stephenson "won" the opening prologue time trial, a problem with the timing however, led to all the riders being awarded the same time, effectively neutralising the stage. Mcrae went on to say "This result establishes Will as one of the countrys top ten Junior road riders and comes after some solid performances at the Junior Track Championships. 10th in the scratch race,13th in the individual pursuit & 17th in the points race "I think a short rest is deserved"

Speaking to "E D" Will said; "I felt much better on the hills than I thought. As I was only given a place in the race the week before I had done less preparation than planned, concentrating on the track nationals instead. I am really looking forward to doing the national series events next year, especially the ones with hills in! I also managed to gain my 1st cat license during the tour so I can enter national B events next year which I am looking forward to. For the rest of this season, I have the GHS 10. I was also going to do the Downton 2 day and try and improve on my 3rd place last year. Then maybe a few hill climbs and a winter of long training rides ready to start next season with a few time trials and then moving on to road races in April."



Rupert Burbidge (Redhill CC) broke the course record on the Bakers Arms- Holes Bay circuit to win Bank Holiday Mondays 15 mile TT.

Clocking 31.10 Burbidge beat local pair Gary Dighton & Terry Icke (Poole Wheelers) Julia Shaw warmed up for this weekends British Time Trial Championships with a 32.59 for 7th place

Bournemouth BMX Club hosted round 10 of the South Summer Series at their Iford Track.

The Bournemouth club also celebrated its 30th year, Chairman, Geoff Routledge was presented with an award to mark his involvement with the club over those 30 years.

French Letter (PT2)
A note to let you know I am still pottering around in Jubilee strip, and Prendas hat.
Last Monday (22nd August) I rode in the World Masters road race championship, under UCI rules; over 80s group at St. Johaan in Austria. It had 37 entrants 27 starters, 40km, with a 2.25 km 5% gradient after three km, and a 350m climb 10% gradient at 15 km. And another easier climb at 20km.
There were nine of us after the first climb, ten after the second, and twelve after the third. There was some demon descending for that.
Whilst I felt strong over the final half and placed myself correctly for the sprint, I finished seventh from a bunch of twelve; which was disappointing.
I did not take the 20 km time trial World championship seriously on Wednesday 24th, as I thought there was no class for me and did not put on tri-bars. When I signed on there was a separate race for my age group, and I finished fourth by 18s, and 47s behind the second man.
No doubt with tri-bars and funny hat I could have been third, and challenged the second rider.

Next year I will be 82 and I think I have another season of kermesse racing in my legs, and after that it will be time trials and/or sportives.

Local Cycling News 24/06/11

It was Groundhog Day at the Moreton Village Evening series, as Jason Eastwood (Hargroves Cycles) strolled to his fourth win in five races. A bright sunny evening greeted the fifty- plus field and despite the recent rain; the roads were dry for this 33 mile handicap.

The riders ahead of the scratch group don't lack the will, perhaps just the fitness, to avoid being swallowed up by that fast moving train, and with more than two laps to go the race was all together.

Stuart Bowers, fresh from his win in the Heath Road Race on Tuesday was full of riding and delivered his team mate to the line perfectly. Bowers held on for second with Steve Groome (Bournemouth Jubilee), finishing strongly in third.

• Clinton Castellar (I-team CC) out sprinted Shaftsbury’s Paul Hopkins (Merida) to win the CC Weymouth Road Race on the Gallows Hill/Monkey World circuit.

A sprint finish always looked likely in this 45 mile race and Portsmouth based Castellar proved the strongest. A touch of wheels, 2 miles from the finish brought down six riders, fortunately all remounted with no serious injury. Scot Oatridge (cc Basingstoke) grabbed third,

• Chris Ball (Biobike RT) came out on top in the Poole Wheelers 10 mile Time Trial. Held on the ski slope course, Ball’s time of 20.14 was 44secs quicker than Benjamin Pearce (Andover Wheelers). Bryce Dyer (VC ST Raphael) claimed third with 21.15. Dyer was putting the finishing touches to his preparation for the National Masters track Championships in Newport next weekend. Dyer had finished 3rd the day before in the Omega stage race at the Mountbatten Track, Portsmouth. Winning the 3 lap time trial (1 mile) in 2.05.18, before a 10th place finish in the following circuit race. Carl Silver (BJW) finished 4th on GC

• The New Forest’s multi- national Champion, Julia Shaw (drag2zero) won her seventh National 50 title at Bentley, Hampshire. Shaw’s impressive time of 1.51.42 in the windy conditions was more than seven minutes clear of her nearest challenger. Bournemouth Jubilee pair Lawrence Down & Phil Harvey recorded times of 2.07.23 &2.18.20 respectively.

• This Saturday sees the official opening ceremony of the new Olympic sized cycle track at Slades Farm. Entrance is free for the event, which will include Cycle track Demonstrations, taster sessions, free bike health checks and local cycle shop displays.
