Local Riders,Local Races
It was lucky thirteen for Stuart Bowers (Hargroves Cycles) at the National Cyclo-Cross Championships. Bowers battled his way to thirteenth place and helped his team win the National Elite Title at Chantry Park, Ipswich. The Ensbury Park-based rider backed up New Champion Ian Field and third place Jody Crawforth to claim the team medals. It was a satisfying result for Bowers, pressure of work has restricted his racing programme this year. Broadstone’s Luke Gray (Baboco) struggled to retain his under 23 crown. Gray crashed inside the first minute of the race after being hit from behind and was forced into the pits to change bikes. A gallant chase saw him claw his way up to fourth place, but that was as good as it got. Gray returned to his base in Belgium with the good news that he has been selected for the GB team for the world championships at the end of the month. Wessex league leader Mike Cotty (Wheelbase/Cannondale) has been in good form but could only manage 22nd place.Speaking to "E D" Cotty said,"It was a tough day, i was a little under par on what i'd hoped for. It was a powerman's course, super fast with no technical. The lead up to the race was a bit more stressful than normal, not just because it's a big race but because my girlfriend was in hospital for an operation on Wednesday. All seemed ok but she was readmitted on Friday in a lot of pain. I thought i would be able to race ok, no excuses but maybe the mental stress scrubbed a little bit of the top end needed to be there. I am dissapointed but racing is racing and life is life"
Harrison Fielding (Poole Wheelers) continues to impress in the Calshot track league. Wins in the 1km TT, and the Points race confirm the Corfe Mullen youngsters promise. Fielding also grabbed 2nd place in both the sprint and the Scratch race.
Darren Kenny & Barney Storey have both been putting in quality training at Newport track ahead of the Para-Cycling world championships. Storey is from Corfe Mullen and is still a member of Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers despite now living in Manchester.
Kenny lives in Verwood and still has links with his first club, Bournemouth Arrow.
Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers winter reliability trial series continues this Sunday with the 75 mile event. The 75 includes Okeford Hill, this year climbed from the Turnworth side and the even steeper St Johns, which takes the riders up to Shaftesbury. The HQ is at Merley Community centre and refreshments are available. The first riders will set off at 09:00.
Don’t forget this Monday’s Bournemouth Cycling Centre Meeting, 7.30pm at Hotel Collingwood. Alan McRae, Facility & Development manager at the track said “We will summarise the progress so far, plans for 2012 beyond just the track and call for involvement from across the local cycling community.
At present the Centre is run "by cyclists for cyclists" but we need help to maintain that enviable position.”

Local Riders,Local Races!
Stuart Bowers (Hargroves Cycles) is looking forward to this weekend’s National Cyclo-Cross Championships, after hitting form at the right time. Ensbury Park-based Bowers has had a slow start to the winter season but after some solid training miles he is starting to fire on all cylinders. A strong performance in the Crabwood CC Boxing day race saw the Hargroves rider take second place behind Mike Cotty (Wheelbase/Cannondale). Chantry Park, Ipswich is the venue for this year’s championships and Bowers will be more than satisfied if he can match his 6th place of last year. Mike Cotty will also be targeting a top ten finish at Ipswich.
New Forest-based Cotty has been racing in Belgium in preparation for the championships. Belgium is the home of Cyclo-cross and crowds of 10,000 or more are not unusual. “It’s phenomenal, I loved every minute of it, the noise from the crowd is intoxicating beyond belief” said Cotty. Reigning U23 Champion, Luke Gray (Baboco), from Broadstone is another local rider who will be racing at Ipswich. Gray has spent the last 4 months living and racing in Belgium and has found the competition tough. Successfully defending his title would be a rare victory for Gray in what has been a difficult year.
World champion, Darren Kenny OBE, from Verwood has been selected for the World Para-Cycling track championships. Kenny has been named in a 14 man squad for the championships in Los Angeles in February. The World Championships represent the last opportunity for qualification points towards the London 2012 Paralympic games. Great Britain are sending a strong squad, including Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 2nd claimers Sarah & Barney Storey.
Tandem pilot Barney, rode most of last season with visually impaired stoker, Anthony Kappes. In L A Storey will pilot Neil Faichie, while former Olympic medallist, Craig Maclean will ride with Kappes.
Ahead of the World Championships the squad will be putting in some intensive work with two, four day training camps at the Newport Velodrome in Wales.
The Poole Wheelers are running a series of “Turbo Trainer” evenings at St Dunstan’s Church Hall Poole Rd, Upton. Running for twelve weeks on Monday evenings, the indoor sessions are designed to build speed, stamina and of course weight loss. Full details from adam.wykes@btinternet.com.
Matrix Fitness/Prendas Ciclismo is the new name for the Horizon Fitness Womens team, support from Johnson Health Tech UK – which includes the Matrix Fitness brand – and Prendas Ciclismo, has ensured the team’s continuation.
Prendas Ciclismo will be providing kit for the all British squad
2012 team line-up: Sarah Byrne, Dani King, Hannah Rich, Joanna Rowsell, Penny Rowson, Annie Simpson, Hannah Walker, Jessie Walker plus Team Mentor Helen Wyman.

Local Cycling News
Mike Cotty (Wheelbase/Cannondale) looked very impressive on his way to 10th place in round 3 of the National Trophy Cyclo-Cross series. Rownhams –based Cotty looked very strong on his “home” course at the Southampton Sports Centre and the technical circuit obviously suited him. Cotty is currently leading the Wessex league and on this form is one of the favourites to win round 6 this weekend at Thruxton.
Crispin Doyle (Swindon RC), who finished ahead of Cotty at Southampton, in 8th place will provide the competition. Luke Gray (Baboco) was out of sorts and complained of “sore legs” over the finish line. Despite this Gray still managed a creditable 11th place and leads the national U23 rankings.
Stu Bowers (Hargroves Cycles) struggled with the fast pace. As always, Bowers has the miles in his legs but is under raced. If he can get some racing under his belt expect to see him challenging Doyle & Cotty!
The Primera Sports supported, Bournemouth Cycle & Tri Expo was hailed a great success.
Most of the big names in the cycle industry were there, including Specialized,Garmin,Cannodale,Sportful and a host of others. Local profesional, Daniel Lloyd was on hand for most of the afternoon and was very happy to talk and answer questions.
Alex Croucher of Primera had this to say
"We would just like to say a huge thankyou to everyone who helped with the Bournemouth Cycle & Tri Expo last weekend, we had a truly great day with over 3000 people attending!, which for our first expo we are extremely pleased with.
Huge thanks to all the exhibitors who attended and also to everyone who helped promoted the event.
Planning for next years event has already started and we are looking to go bigger and better with more great products to see and also possible cycling celebrity appearances!!"

Dear all,
There is a problem with road racing in the south!! Namely there is almost none! Shame on you clubs who do not promote - seriously you should be embarrassed!!
So far for the entire of next year there are a pitiful 4 senior races and 1 junior tour. (This does not include TLI events. E D)
Why is this??
History
Cycling used to have a strong club structure, well organised with a good team of volunteers who were prepared to do their part in organising as well as racing. Also the older members used to step down from racing to run events and take over the official appoinments. By and large this does not happen now.
Reasons
1) We live in a self obsessed era where self gratification is the name of the game, people only race and do not think of promoting events.
2) People do not know that races are organised by volunteers.
3) People are scared of organising events because it seems so hard, might land them in court.
Do these reasons chime with any of you? Turning red yet?
What can be done?
Hey, lets go back to the club structure
1) Organise a committee in your club, a chairman, secretary, racing secretary.
2) Look at a free weekend and offer to promote a race. Call the RCA Tim Knight and he will let you know what you need to do.
3) Think where you would like to do the race. Tim will let you know of approved circuits in your local area or possible further afield.
4) Send off the paperwork for the race, check the website, see the handbook and see your race! It will feel good.
Then
5) Get some marshalls, normally 8 will suffice on most circuits.
6) Have a couple of cars and a first aider.
7) Organise a village hall and book it, Sue, Tim and me recce'd about 6 circuits in 2009 all with HQ's and tel no's.
8) Tim will bring some race aids, signs, banners, CB radios etc etc.
9) Promote the race, BC officials will judge and commissaire.
10) Enjoy your promotion, organise a club pub dinner afterwards to pat yourselves on the back on a job well done!
12) Go to other clubs races safe in the knowledge that you have done your bit for the sport!
What could go wrong?
1) There could be an accident. Yes and Fisrt aid and the Ambulance service will pick up the pieces.
2) There could be a crash which will see you in court. Yes I was in court in June for a crash on a race between a casual rider and a racer. I had followed the risk assessment and no case to answer, BC fully suport organisers.
3) You get the result wrong, a BC official will judge the event so it will be correct.
What benefits are there?
1) More races on the calendar.
2) A sense of achievement.
3) Your club and your name on a national website.
4) The thanks of other riders.
Please have a think, look in the mirror to see if this is you, pass this email on to people who should know about it, use facebook and all the rest to spread the word. Organise your club and organise a race. If you are not in a club, stop being a chepskate and join a club which promotes events and suport that club!
I am off on an extended sandy holiday soon and will not be able to organise events over the summer, please lets get the racing on track or we could lose the entire sport and only have crappy Sportives to ride!!
Regards
Darren Clarke

Local Cycling News
Gregg Shrosbree (MERIDA) was disappointed to finish second in round 10 of the Moreton Evening series in Dorset. The 19 year old had scored his first win on the road last weekend at the Brentor Road Race in Devon and was hungry for more. Shrosbree along with Andy Hargroves (Hargroves Cycles) had attacked the bunch and had a good gap as they approached the bell lap.
Unfortunately they were too quick for the timekeeper, who failed to sound the bell in time for them to hear. Hargroves team mates, Eastwood and Bowers policed the bunch and the gap grew.
Sensing that something was wrong, the duo agreed to roll across the line together. However the chequered flag came into sight and Hargroves called off the truce, easily winning the sprint, Shrosbree though, did appear not to contest the finish. He will not lose sleep over it though, “It’s only training” he said.
Andy Hargroves was racing Moreton for the first time; the Hampshire based team are dominating the series with wins already for Eastwood & Luke Gray. Eastwood picked up the scraps in the sprint for third place and looks good to repeat his overall win of last year.
PROVISIONAL RESULT
1, ANDREW HARGROVES (HARGROVES CYCLES)
2, GREGG SHROSBREE (MERIDA)
3, JASON EASTWOOD (HARGROVES CYCLES)
4, ROLAND TILLEY (RIDEBIKE.CO.UK)

Gregg Shrosbree (Merida) scored his first Road Race win at the Brentor event in Devon. Shrosbree rode aggressively throughout the 40 mile race but could not escape the bunch. However one big effort in the last few miles saw the Sandbanks rider go clear. Broadstone Based Luke Gray (Hargroves Cycles) and Andy Boyd (Revo Racing) managed to get across to Shrosbree but had no answer when the Merida rider kicked again.
Shrosbree wins Brentor, Gray settles for 2nd:Photo Lisa Lindstroem
Gray took second with Boyd third. Nineteen year old Shrosbree was happy with his maiden win on the road and is already looking ahead “My plans for the rest of the season are to get as many points as I can, before I go the Alps and then on to Belgium to tackle the big boys in the Kermesses at the end of August. Plans for next year include a first category license, a bigger team and the National Champs. Shrosbree is a talented rider, perhaps he needs to find the killer instinct to deliver his worthy ambitions.
James Gilfillan (Team Feat) won the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 25 mile Time Trial, on the Upton course.
The world age group triathlon champion’s time of 52.28 put nearly 2 minutes into his nearest challenger, Tom Alliban (Revo Racing) 54.25. Ringwood -Based Gilfillan has recently ridden the Race across America (RAAM) and proved too strong for the pure cyclists. Gary Dighton (Poole Wheelers), 54.38 came third, leading the winning team of Terry Icke & Steve Birtwistle. Judith Martin won the ladies race to make it a good day for the Poole club. Gilfillan is off to France next week for “Le Alpe D’uez Triathlon, the 115km bike leg finishes at the top of the famous climb with the following 22km run around the ski station. Meanwhile Winton rider Claire Day (Born to Bike) won her second gold medal at the 100 mile time trial championships. The former Bournemouth Jubilee member repeated her success of last year, recording 4.20.56 as part of the winning ladies team. "Crap day! crap legs!, you know the story, i grovelled around determined to finish so we could win the team award and i ended up winning my age group as well!" said Claire.
• Ridebike.co.uk trio, Mark Chadbourne, Simon Willats and Roland Tilley claimed 3 of the top 5 placings in round 4 of the Southern X country MTB series. Chadbourne was best placed in second spot. Carol Tilley won the veteran ladies race. All four will be in action this weekend at the National X country Championships at Richmond, North Yorkshire.

Local Cycling News 24/06/11
It was Groundhog Day at the Moreton Village Evening series, as Jason Eastwood (Hargroves Cycles) strolled to his fourth win in five races. A bright sunny evening greeted the fifty- plus field and despite the recent rain; the roads were dry for this 33 mile handicap.
The riders ahead of the scratch group don't lack the will, perhaps just the fitness, to avoid being swallowed up by that fast moving train, and with more than two laps to go the race was all together.
Stuart Bowers, fresh from his win in the Heath Road Race on Tuesday was full of riding and delivered his team mate to the line perfectly. Bowers held on for second with Steve Groome (Bournemouth Jubilee), finishing strongly in third.

• Clinton Castellar (I-team CC) out sprinted Shaftsbury’s Paul Hopkins (Merida) to win the CC Weymouth Road Race on the Gallows Hill/Monkey World circuit.
A sprint finish always looked likely in this 45 mile race and Portsmouth based Castellar proved the strongest. A touch of wheels, 2 miles from the finish brought down six riders, fortunately all remounted with no serious injury. Scot Oatridge (cc Basingstoke) grabbed third,
• Chris Ball (Biobike RT) came out on top in the Poole Wheelers 10 mile Time Trial. Held on the ski slope course, Ball’s time of 20.14 was 44secs quicker than Benjamin Pearce (Andover Wheelers). Bryce Dyer (VC ST Raphael) claimed third with 21.15. Dyer was putting the finishing touches to his preparation for the National Masters track Championships in Newport next weekend. Dyer had finished 3rd the day before in the Omega stage race at the Mountbatten Track, Portsmouth. Winning the 3 lap time trial (1 mile) in 2.05.18, before a 10th place finish in the following circuit race. Carl Silver (BJW) finished 4th on GC
• The New Forest’s multi- national Champion, Julia Shaw (drag2zero) won her seventh National 50 title at Bentley, Hampshire. Shaw’s impressive time of 1.51.42 in the windy conditions was more than seven minutes clear of her nearest challenger. Bournemouth Jubilee pair Lawrence Down & Phil Harvey recorded times of 2.07.23 &2.18.20 respectively.
• This Saturday sees the official opening ceremony of the new Olympic sized cycle track at Slades Farm. Entrance is free for the event, which will include Cycle track Demonstrations, taster sessions, free bike health checks and local cycle shop displays.
