STARTSHEET

Headquarters
The event headquarters will be at Lytchett Matravers Village Hall Sports Club. This is the building in the centre of the Village Hall car park. Toilets and changing facilities are available there. Together with race numbers and signing on. Refreshments available here after the race.
( The HQ is in a residential area so please be as quiet as possible.)
Start.
To get to the start, turn right out of the HQ car park, and right again at the first crossroad by the public house. Proceed down out of the village,then fork right follow this lane down to the start at the junction with the A35.
Course P412/10
Start at exit of Bulbury Lane and A35. ( 8yds east of speed restriction sign and 40yds west of bust stop).
Proceed east on A35 to Bakers Arms rbt (1.65m). Straight on along the A35 to Holes Bay rbt (5.21m). Circle
and retrace to Bakers Arms rbt (8.8m). Straight on along A35 to the finish. (On A35 at lay-by opposite entrance to Newton’s Farm).
The fire station emergency lights at Holes bay roundabout are operational. Observers will be present. Any rider going through a red light will be disqualified and South DC informed.

Harry Bulstrode (Contre la Montre) scored a weekend double on the Romsey-Brook course in Hampshire. Saturday’s solo 10 mile time trial was run off in calm conditions and Bulstrode set a new course record with 21.38. Sunday’s two-up team 10 was a different story however, as heavy rain made it a day for the hard men. Riding with team mate Andy Bryson, the pair clocked 21.57, drying out at the HQ Bulstrode said “It was quite frightening I could not see, I had a visor on and it kept steaming up because of the rain” Poole Wheelers pair, Gary Dighton & Terry Icke, had placed 4th & 5th respectively in the solo event but decided not to start the deluged two-up. The two events were promoted by former British Best all-rounder, Glenn Longland to mark the 40th anniversary of his first ever time trial.

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers opened their 2012 club programme with the quirky "mountain bike 10". Competitors are encouraged to ride "Off Road" machines "On Road". Dave Pickering proved fastest in the windy conditions, clocking 29.57 just 2 seconds ahead of Cliff Rowe, Andy Graham took third place with 30.28
Round 2 of the local Inter-Club TT series was called off due to torrential rain with standing water covering parts of the course. The series continues this weekend with a double-header: Bournemouth Jubilee run the 20 mile event on the Furzehill circuit on Saturday at 15:00. While on Sunday the Poole Wheelers 15 mile event on the Wareham-Gallows Hill course, starts at 09:00


Bob Jollife (New Forest CC )writes.......NEW Forest Cycling Club triathlete Gary Lock got his time trial season underway with a new personal best 10 in the Antelope Racing Team event on the King’s Somborne to Romsey course on Saturday.Gary, who seems to thrive in tough conditions, clipped seven seconds off his “personal” reducing it to 23-42 on a warm and sunny afternoon which was only spoiled by the stiff westerly which blew away the hopes of many other competitors.
The time trial was the first of two 10s at the weekend promoted by former British Best All Rounder Glenn Longland to mark the 40th anniversary of his first-ever time trial. Stuart Peckham, who has been putting in some sterling work during New Forest CC’s Wednesday evening turbo training sessions, reaped the rewards with an impressive 25-35.Gary Plumb was next best of a six-man “Forest” squad with 26-50 followed by new member Robert Brinsdon (28-00), returnee Martin Balk (30-32) and Bob Jolliffe (31-23).Winner with a course record 21-38 was Harry Bulstrode riding for the new Contre La Montre team. Bulstrode who is hitting top form early also took top honours in Sunday’s two-up team time trial on the same course.Riding with team-mate Andy Bryson he clocked 21-57 in heavy rain which produced huge puddles on parts of the course.Bulstrode said:“I like this course. I thought yesterday it did have a bit more of a tailwind back; but I think it comes down to whether you feel comfortable.”Bob Jolliffe and New Forest CC president, 72-year-old Roger Bacon, finished the event in the lantern rouge position in a time of 33-34.

New Forest CC kicks off its full programme of club time trials on Sunday with a 10-miler on the testing Holmsley-Burley circuit on Sunday (March 11). Event headquarters are at Goatspen car park. The first rider will face the timekeeper at 9.31am.

This is a series of two coach led racing sessions, to be run at Bournemouth Cycling Centre on the two Tuesday's prior to the start of the formal Bournemouth Arrow track league sessions and track league itself!

The Coaching Sessions:
The two sessions will focus on progre...ssing riders technical and tactical abilities at Sprint, Scratch, Elimination & Points Racing.

Who are these sessions aimed at?
The sessions are aimed at competent track riders intending to race track in 2012

Tuesdays the 3rd & 10th of April

The Times:
18:00 arrival for a prompt 18:30 start. Finish at 20:00

Start by concrete area on the south side of the unclassified road (Wool-Eastholme) opposite s bend sign 2.5 miles east of Wool.Proceed west to Wool where turn left (CARE) onto B3071,passing the first lap
prime at entrance to Lime Kiln farm(5.0 miles)approching top of the long climb. Continue south on B3071 toWest Lulworth (6.0 miles)where very sharp left (GREAT CARE ON ADVERSE CAMBER )
onto B3070 proceed through East Lulworth towards Wareham to turn left (10.3 miles)onto unclassified road
towards Wool.Continue past the start 911.1 miles)and repeat the circuit.After two laps again proceed past the start to Wool where turn left (CARE)as before onto (B3071)to finish (25.7 miles)opposite wooden-
post just before the road on the left signpost to Combe Keynes

Dorset Miles: Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 75 Mile Reliability Trial

The “75” is regarded as the toughest of the four Jubilee Tourist Trials but despite its reputation 87 riders signed on. This year’s clockwise direction is, perhaps the easiest way round, with all the big climbs coming in the first 30 odd miles. A roll call of local “names,” assisted by a stiff easterly wind drove the 09:30 group to Blandford. “Evens” was easy as we headed towards the first big climb. Tackled from the Turnworth side, Okeford Hill is a big ring grovel, in a nice kind of way. It was a clear day, the whole of North Dorset seemed to be set before us and the far distant hills had Somerset written on them. The pace did not slacken, talk in the wheels was of conserving energy, while those on the front seemed to have too much of this precious commodity. St John’s Hill took us up to Shaftesbury, it is relentless and the left hander by the church is a heartbreaker. We regrouped, a few had gone but there was time for recovery as we dropped all the way down to Coombe Bissett. The main road climb briefly halted conversation, yet still the pace demanded attention. Across to Cranborne, the wind was now from the side but the 11 miles back to Merley are flat and fast. Like bike rides all across the country today, those that struggle early on come good later, our group was no exception. The 100 in 8, on February 12th is the last of the four trials in the series and provides a fitting end to the winter. The Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers award medals to those that complete all four rides, on the face of it, not much of a challenge. In reality, ice, punctures, illness, can all make it harder to complete the series. It’s a small achievement perhaps but it may be the only medal some ever get but there is still the small matter of the 100! The ride out and home gives me another hour, 4hr 51.

It was lucky thirteen for Stuart Bowers (Hargroves Cycles) at the National Cyclo-Cross Championships. Bowers battled his way to thirteenth place and helped his team win the National Elite Title at Chantry Park, Ipswich. The Ensbury Park-based rider backed up New Champion Ian Field and third place Jody Crawforth to claim the team medals. It was a satisfying result for Bowers, pressure of work has restricted his racing programme this year. Broadstone’s Luke Gray (Baboco) struggled to retain his under 23 crown. Gray crashed inside the first minute of the race after being hit from behind and was forced into the pits to change bikes. A gallant chase saw him claw his way up to fourth place, but that was as good as it got. Gray returned to his base in Belgium with the good news that he has been selected for the GB team for the world championships at the end of the month. Wessex league leader Mike Cotty (Wheelbase/Cannondale) has been in good form but could only manage 22nd place.Speaking to "E D" Cotty said,"It was a tough day, i was a little under par on what i'd hoped for. It was a powerman's course, super fast with no technical.The lead up to the race was a bit more stressful than normal, not just because it's a big race but because my girlfriend was in hospital for an operation on Wednesday. All seemed ok but she was readmitted on Friday in a lot of pain. I thought i would be able to race ok, no excuses but maybe the mental stress scrubbed a little bit of the top end needed to be there. I am dissapointed but racing is racing and life is life"

Harrison Fielding (Poole Wheelers) continues to impress in the Calshot track league. Wins in the 1km TT, and the Points race confirm the Corfe Mullen youngsters promise. Fielding also grabbed 2nd place in both the sprint and the Scratch race.

Darren Kenny & Barney Storey have both been putting in quality training at Newport track ahead of the Para-Cycling world championships. Storey is from Corfe Mullen and is still a member of Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers despite now living in Manchester.

Kenny lives in Verwood and still has links with his first club, Bournemouth Arrow.

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers winter reliability trial series continues this Sunday with the 75 mile event. The 75 includes Okeford Hill, this year climbed from the Turnworth side and the even steeper St Johns, which takes the riders up to Shaftesbury. The HQ is at Merley Community centre and refreshments are available. The first riders will set off at 09:00.

Don’t forget this Monday’s Bournemouth Cycling Centre Meeting, 7.30pm at Hotel Collingwood. Alan McRae, Facility & Development manager at the track said “We will summarise the progress so far, plans for 2012 beyond just the track and call for involvement from across the local cycling community.
At present the Centre is run "by cyclists for cyclists" but we need help to maintain that enviable position.”

Luke Gray (Baboco) put in an impressive performance in round 2 of the National Cyclo-Cross series in Leicester. Braking late on the first tricky corner, Gray surged into the lead, taking with him 6 other riders and distancing the field.

A race long battle ensued, with Belgian visitor Jelie Brakman (Van de Verst CT) finally escaping to take the victory. Gray finished 7th after fading on the last lap but was the leading U23 rider and made it a 1-2 on the podium with teammate,Xandro Meurisse. The former Broadstone man, now based in Belgium had struggled with a virus the previous weekend, finishing off the pace in a local Wessex League race. Bouncing back to form in this national race, Luke was in confident mood as he drove back to Belgium. Two days later he rode the famous Koppenberg Cross, a race that attracts crowds of over 20,000. The 19yr old finished 37th in a world class field, all valuable experience as he looks to establish himself on the continent.(Due to his unexpected change of teams, Gray has been racing in plain kit but should be in Baboco colours this weekend) The third round of the National series will be held at Southampton Sports Centre on 13th November.

Mike Cotty (Wheelbase/Cannondale) continued his good run of form, winning the 5th round of the Wessex League Cyclo-Cross at Oxford. Cotty is leading the series overall and will be riding the National Trophy race at Southampton, before the League resumes with round 6 at Thruxton on November 20th

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers popular series of four reliability trials kicks off this Sunday with the 50 mile event. The monthly trials gradually increase in distance, finishing with the challenging 100-mile ride in February. The routes are mostly on small undulating country lanes, providing a good test of rider and machine. Start and finish is at Merley Community Centre, where refreshments are available.

Last years 50 mile event saw 145 riders sign on and numbers are increasing year on year. Non-members are welcome and the £5 entry fee includes associate membership and entry to all four reliability trials.

Madison School!

A two hour track session, dedicated to learning and practising the techniques involved in riding the Madison. Great fun and great for developing all-round track riding skills. 12:00-14:00 on Saturday 19th November at Bournemouth Cycling Centre. This session is suitable for riders of 13yrs upwards, who have at least some track riding experience.
As a minimum you should have ridden a few Saturday morning & Wednesday evening sessions and feel comfortable moving around the track on your bike and riding close to other riders.

You don't have to bring a Madison partner, although if you have a pair of identical jerseys, bring them along.
Cost is £10, payable on the day, no need to book.

Lee Piercy (Trideals.co.uk) was a clear winner of the Sandy Balls Duathlon at Fordingbridge.

A winner the previous week at Thruxton, Wick-based Piercy led throughout the 5km run, 20km bike, 5km run event to win by over 7 minutes. Piercy has struggled most of the year with a persistent back injury but looks to be on the mend.

...and finally,just heard that the Bournemouth Arrow Good Friday 10 will return to the Time Trial Calendar next year.

...and finally, finally, a group ride aimed at ladies and less experienced cyclists, but all welcome, has been added to the winter programme. Meeting at bottom of Harbour Heights Hill 18:30 every Tuesday Evening. Ride is about an hour.

...and finally,finally, finally, Andy Storey of Prendas Ciclismo in Parkstone, had a letter in this week's Cycling Weekly bemoaning the magazines bias towards Sportif ridng, Andy says " Remember back to when you first started cycling? As kids nobody aimed to be a sportive rider. We all wanted to be world champ or wear the yellow jersey"

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 25

James Gilfillan (Team Feat) won the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 25 mile Time Trial, on the Upton course, west of Poole. The world age group triathlon champion put nearly 2 minutes into his nearest challenger, Tom Alliban (Revo Racing).

On what most riders described as a “good morning” the 62 strong field showed only 9 improvements. Sometimes no wind does not equal fast times. Gilfillan has recently ridden the Race across America (RAAM) and had too much in his legs for the pure cyclists.

Gary Dighton (Poole Wheelers) came third, leading the winning team of Terry Icke & Steve Birtwistle. Dighton had spent the week in France watching the tour and felt refreshed, due to the cancellation of the midweek club event, Icke had not raced for a week and felt “rubbish”.
