"SEND BOB" CAMPAIGN

HAMPSHIRE kidney transplant recipient and racing cyclist Bob Jolliffe needs your help to raise at least £2,600 to send him to the World Transplant Games in South Africa next July. Bob Jolliffe is a regular contributor to “Local Riders,Local Races” and is passionate about everything cycling!

Bob, along with many of his family members, suffers from Polycystic Kidney Disease. His grandfather died a very protracted death in the 1960s while his father, also a racing cyclist, underwent an unsuccessful transplant and then was a guinea pig for CAPD home dialysis in the early 1980s. Unfortunately he died after contracting septicaemia in 1984.

Bob, his younger brother and sister, however, have all been fortunate and benefitted from transplants. Bob received a life-saving transplant at Portsmouth’s Queen Alexandra Hospital three years ago. After spending two “debilitating and very restrictive” years on dialysis, says that now, “thanks to my donor and his family, to whom I owe an immense debt of gratitude, I feel better than I have done for many years”.

A keen cyclist since his teens, Bob, who is now 60, is competing in the World Games in order to promote the life-changing and life-saving benefits that come to desperately ill people through the gift of organ donation.

Bob is a clear example of the fact that ‘transplants transform lives’ and hopes his and his team mates’ activity will encourage people to sign up as potential donors and save lives.

Bob’s trip to the World Games is estimated to cost £2,600. This will have to be entirely self-funded and like many others, the unwaged former journalist, is finding times tough so needs your help.

Please dig deep and help Bob raise this money to send him on a once in a life time trip and promote one of the most miraculous achievements of modern medicine: organ transplants.

A BRISK cool southerly breeze meant superfast times were not on the cards for three New Forest Cycling Club testers in the Poole Wheelers’ 10 on the Upton bypass.But the damp conditions on Sunday could not stop CC Weymouth’s Greg Parker from clocking a rapid 20-36 to win from Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers’ Simon McLaughlin who was nine seconds slower in runner-up spot. Third went to Poole’s Steve Birtwhistle with 21-43.New Forest’s Stuart Peckham finished with a time of 23-34, Chris Hughes 23-47 and Bob Jolliffe 28-28. Crabwood CC 69-year-old veteran Dave England from East Boldre clocked 23-44 in the event, three weeks after setting a new Wessex Veteran Time Trials age-related record for 100 miles in the East District Cycling Association event with a time of 4-28-55, which also won him the best on standard award.

While the New Forest trio was at Upton, second claim members Martin Beale and Rob Ellis (both VC St Raphael) suffered a thorough soaking in the Farnham Road Club two-up 25 at Bentley. Their 56-23 earned them fifth place. Winning pair were Charlie Mitchell and Phil Bowley of Owen Cycles with 54-05.Three members of the Southampton-based Contre la Montre team – Stephen Whitewick, Harry Bulstrode and James Gilfillan – won the four-up team time trial held on the same course in a cracking 48-46.The Poole Wheelers’ squad of Terry Icke, Paul Jones, Gary Dighton and Andy Buddle finished in 50-32, despite losing Icke who suffered a puncture. Four-up times are based on the third rider past the post.
John wins “Devil”New

Forest’s John Heffernan is continuing to do well at the Bournemouth Track League – which unfortunately clashes with club Tuesday evening time trials – winning the Group B Devil Take The Hindmost, or the elimination race as it’s also known, last week.He said: “As well as winning the Devil I was fourth in the points race. “We were mugged by a three rider combine who, with obvious pre-planning, attacked us after the first sprint. I am still getting the hang of track tactics, but it is the tactics that make it so much fun.”
Green back in action Former New Forest CC member Antony Green (GA Cycles) was in action last week, taking second place in the latest Bournemouth Arrow CC 10 on the Ringwood-Sopley course in 23-10 on a tough windy Thursday evening. The only rider able to beat him was Poole Wheeler Leighton Girling with a sterling 22-54. Third place went to Bournemouth Jubilee Wheeler Ian Diaper with 23-36 from the Arrow’s Pete Wilson (24-28), New Forest CC’s Stuart Peckham (24-48) and VC St Raphael’s Rob Ellis 25-15.

New Forest CC Club 10 31/07/12

Bob Jolliffe reports.....NEW Forest Cycling Club’s Gary Lock was in stunning form in the latest club 10 around two laps of the difficult Holmsley South-Bransgore circuit.His time of 23min 26secs was enough to beat clubmate Ben Boardman, who is also in top condition, into second place by 39 seconds.Third went to James Bannister, a further 46 seconds in arrears, with 24-51.Two other home riders – Chris Grant and Tony Rendell – slotted into fourth and fifth with times of 25-14 and 25-20, while second claim member Stuart Grace (GA Cycles) took sixth with 26-04, 23 seconds faster than Bournemouth Arrow CC’s Peter Wilson.Others (NFCC unless stated): Rob Brinsdon and Hugh Roper tied with 26-43, Sean Williams 26-56, Nick Williams 26-59, Dan Mitchell 27-03, Richard Mason 27-09, Phil Underwood 27-13, Stuart Martingale (Sotonia CC) 27-14, David Wilson 27-39, Konnor Bracher-Walsh 27-53, Julian Sheppard (Sotonia CC) 28-02, Keith Bradfield 28-06, Donna Shaw 30-48, Antony Moyle 31-01, Richard Wills 31-07, Chris Mills 31-11, Roger Bacon 32-09, Glenn Harrison (Come and Try It ride) 33-02.

Sun shines on Ader
Bob Jolliffe reports on a weather affected weekend…………A3 Cycle Racing Group’s Sebastian Ader clocked a race-winning 51-59 in the Farnham Road Club 25 at Bentley on Sunday morning.There was a raft of non-starters for the event – which had attracted 117 men, a trio of tandems, a duo of juniors and 11 women to the H25/8 course between Farnham and Alton – many put off by the thought of riding in the rain and some who had turned up and decided not to compete when the downpour set in for the early starters.However, for the later competitors the sun came out, dried up the roads and sent temperatures soaring.The three top places were taken by those who enjoyed the warmth: Ader started last man at number 119, Richard Prebble of Node4-Giordana Racing Team who finished second with 52-18 started two minutes in front of him and third man with 54-38, Farnborough & Camberley CC’s James Goward, started at 109.Best Southampton area rider was VC St Raphael’s Andy Rivett, sixth with 55-47, followed by GA Cycles’ Ray Claridge who took 16th with 57-21.

New Forest CC’s Chris Hughes, who is targeting a first sub-hour ride, was slowed by the cold, lack of visibility and flooded hardtop to 1-01-58, a minute away from his PB; while clubmate Bob Jolliffe, off No 2, struggled in the conditions to 1-16-16.Sotonia CC’s Jonathan Legg finished with 1-02-24.

Bob Jolliffe writes....AN emergency call for assistance has gone out from Maggie Bracher whose 16-year-old mile-eating son Konnor will be attempting the 960-mile Land’s End John O’Groats ride with his Uncle Dug next weekend.Maggie said: “We've had a bit of a hiccup on the LEJOG front and have lost one of our support crew for Konnor due to a family crisis.“I know that this is really short notice but we desperately need a third support crew member to be able to share the driving of the motorhome and preferably be comfortable with repairing punctures/changing tyres etc. “So far Konnor's crew are myself and one of Dug's Marine colleagues.“We are aiming to be in Taunton for about 5.00 on Friday evening (July 6) for a meal with everybody at Dug's work 'pad'.“We are sleeping there and driving to Land’s End on Saturday morning with a view to starting the ride at 2pm on Saturday. We are aiming for the lads to finish the ride by Tuesday (July 10) afternoon/evening. “We have a campsite booked for Tuesday night for those of us who want to stay there and are starting the drive back to Taunton on Wednesday (July 11).“I know this is clutching at straws, but I live in hope that somebody might be able to get off work for a few days and would like a fleeting glimpse of the UK countryside albeit, some of it in the dark!”Anyone who can help out with this worthwhile ride which will raise money for the University of Cambridge Veterinary School Trust and the Go Commando charities should contact Maggie as soon as possible at mags.bracher@googlemail.com.

Second claim New Forest member Martin Beale (VC St Raphael) was happy to hit top form in the A3CRG 25 the previous evening, clocking a season’s best 55-02.Totton’s Stephen Whitewick (Contre la Montre) was quickest in 49-51 from Sotonian teammate Harry Bulstrode (50-13) and Steve Irwin of Kingston Wheelers (50-48).Sotonia CC’s Stuart Martingale went well with 55-26 and veteran clubmate Alan Sharpen clocked 1-04-06.Beale went on to clock 23-19 for fourth place in Bournemouth Arrow CC’s 10 on the Ringwood-Sopley course in dry but windy weather on Thursday evening behind Simon Thomas of KTM, first with 23-07, and GA Cycles’ pair Simon Barnes (23-08) and Ray Claridge (23-12).New Forest CC’s Colin Humm was eighth with 24-15, clubmate Stuart Peckham, who punctured in his club’s 15, was 11th with 24-36 and Howard Doe 14th with 25-24.

Peckham fourthPeckham said he was “quite chuffed” to take fourth place in the 40 to 44 age category in the Derek Witt Memorial Road Race run by the League of Veteran Racing Cyclists at Kilmeston at the weekend.

Southern distance experts got their British Best All-Rounder campaigns an early boost in the Hounslow & District Wheelers’ 100-mile time trial at Bentley in North Hampshire on sunny Sunday .Poole-based Adam Topham (High Wycombe CC) shrugged off the heat and roared around five laps of the A31-based course in a stunning 3-37-40 to beat Southampton’s Julian Jenkinson (Contre la Montre) into second spot.Jenkinson, who won the national BBAR in 2010 and was second in the competition last year, was almost six minutes slower than Topham with 3-43-40.Third place was taken by Jenkinson’s teammate, ace Ironman James Gilfillan with an excellent time of 3-47-30. With Marc Barfoot’s 4-50-20, Contre la Montre went on to take the team award.Bournemouth Jubilee Wheeler Dave Pickering clocked a fine 4-08-01 while teammate Phil Evans finished with 4-39-15 to his credit. Sotonia CC’s Stuart Martingale clocked 4-16-12 and Wessex RC veteran Fred Newton, 4-46-11.Event organiser Trevor Gilbert said: “It could be described as very hot. The wind had an effect but it was not as bad as yesterday.”He said Topham’s time was “the fastest ever recorded for our normal event, the only time it was beaten was in the Championship in 1997”.“I think it was a brilliant ride. After the event, Adam was staggering rather than walking.”
HOUNSLOW 100 RESULT BOARD

“I DIDN’T have the legs today,” admitted Totton-based Stephen Whitewick after he missed beating his own year-old course record in New Forest Cycling Club’s Round the Forest time trial.Nonetheless, 51-year-old Whitewick (Contre la Montre) – who clocked 1-11-15 for the 32-mile New Milton-based circuit 12 months ago – still won in a very rapid 1-12-42 from nearest challenger Gary Dighton (Poole Whrs) who was a minute and seven seconds slower.Third place went to Steve Walkling of VC St Raphael with 1-14-30 while his teammate Andy Rivett took fourth with 1-16-39.Best of six New Forest CC competitors was John Heffernan in 10th with 1-18-58, just 19 seconds faster than clubmate Gary Lock in 11th.First rider on the road was NFCC’s Stuart Peckham who took 20th with 1-23-44, just three days after improving his personal best 10 from 24-51 to 24-18.Chris Hughes was 24th with 1-28-20, Rob Brinsdon 29th with 1-32-11 and Bob Jolliffe 31st with 1-46-55. Second claim member Martin Beale (VC St Raphael) was 16th with 1-21-03.Lesley Walkling (VC St Raphael) took the women’s award with 1-27-49 after Bramshaw’s Julia Shaw was a non-starter following her win in the fourth round of the Rudy Project series promoted by Doncaster Wheelers the previous day.Fresh from her sixth win in the National 10-mile championship six days previously, Shaw (Drag2Zero) cracked around the 13-mile course in 29min 54sec to beat London Dynamo’s Rebecca Slack by 2min 7sec.
Same time for Gilfillan ,Contre la Montre’s James Gilfillan clocked exactly the same time as seven days previously when he won the latest Bournemouth Arrow CC 10 at Ringwood in 21-57, beating BJW’s Ian Diaper into second place by 1-04.Third place went to Primera’s Richard Horton with 23-07, while second claim NFCC member Martin Beale (VC St Raphael) was fourth with 23-25. New Forest’s Stuart Peckham clocked 24-18 to improve his personal best 10-mile time by 33 seconds to take eighth.

BRAMSHAW’S Julia Shaw claimed her sixth consecutive 10-mile national 10-mile time trial championship win at Sawtry in Cambridgeshire on Sunday (MAY 20) morning.Riding for Drag2Zero, the popular New Forest-based powerhouse who, like national cycling gem Chris Boardman hails originally from the Wirral, tore around the 10 miles in 22 minutes 27 seconds to beat her nearest challenger Claire Galloway (For Voired RT) by more than a minute-and-a-half.Galloway’s 23-59 was two seconds too quick for London Dynamo’s Rebecca Slack who took bronze.The amazing Michael Hutchinson (In Gear-Quickvit-Trainsharp RT) won the men’s national 10 championship for the ninth time on the same course in the afternoon, clocking 19-40 to beat Matthew Bottrill (Drag2Zero) by 19 seconds while Nicolas Hutchings CS Grupetto) took bronze in 20-22.Totton’s Stephen Whitewick (Contre la Montre) shared 25th place with Hutchinson’s Conall Yates (21-35).
Three out of three for Gilfillan!

Contre la Montre’s James Gilfillan hit a purple patch last week, winning three time trials over three distances in four days.World class Ironman Gilfillan started his rout on Thursday in Bournemouth Arrow’s evening 10, went on to take the Sotonia 25 on Saturday and rounded off with a top performance in the chilly Wessex Road Club 50 on Sunday.Gilfillan won the 50 in a startlingly quick 1-49-59 from teammate Julian Jenkinson 1-51-22 and Poole Wheelers’ Gary Dighton 1-52-03.Southampton University Road Club pair George Crammond and Tim Wallace won the tandem event in 1-54-12. Other Southampton times: Marc Barfoot (Contre la Montre) 2-15-15, Linda Connor (Soton Tri Club) 2-27-24. Stuart Peckham became New Forest CC 50-mile champion when he finished his first test at the distance in an excellent 2-08-25.

Clubmate Chris Hughes, finished four minutes down with 2-12-31. He said: “Now I appreciate how tough a 50 TT is: You hurt in parts of your body that did not know existed."

Club secretary Peter Weaver clocked 2-33-07 while second claim New Forest member Stuart Grace (GA Cycles) finished with 2-13-44.

On Saturday Gilfillan romped around two-and-a-half laps of the Copythorne-based Sotonia CC circuit to win the club’s 25 in 53-52 from Hainault CC’s Russell Kober (54-40).Bournemouth Jubilee Wheeler Dave Pickering was third with 56-23, Shirley-based GA Cycles’ boss Gary Allan took fourth in 57-18 from Sotonia’s Stuart Martingale with 58-06.Two days earlier, Gilfillan won the regular Bournemouth Arrow CC Thursday 10 at Ringwood, ripping around the roughly surfaced “rumble strip” in 21-57, 18 seconds quicker than Primera-Specialized’s Will Stephenson. Third went to the Arrow’s Phil Mosley in 22-27.New Forest’s Stuart Peckham took eighth with 25-09, second claim member Rob Ellis (VC St Raphael) was 12th with 25-43, Howard Doe 14th with 26-05 and Bob Jolliffe 22nd with 30-38.

New Forest CCs, Bob Jolliffe writes........
SOUTHAMPTON-based Contre la Montre’s Stephen Whitewick and Julian Jenkinson took first and second places in the Bournemouth & District Women’s Cycling Association 25-mile time trial near Poole on Sunday.Whitewick, from Totton, clocked a rapid 52-13, more than a minute quicker than his teammate who finished in 53min 17sec to beat veteran Poole Wheeler Terry Icke, who is enjoying some of the best form of his long career, by 36 seconds.Bishopstoke’s Andy Rivett (VC St Raphael) took 10th with 55-24, GA Cycles’ Gary Allan was 11th in 55-58 and New Forest CC’s John Heffernan 12th with 56-13.Heffernan’s clubmate Chris Hughes was “over the moon” with a three-minute-plus improvement on his personal best to 1-00-54 and the Forest’s Stuart Peckham also went well with 1-02-25.
Forest have edge over Sotonia!
First, second, fourth and sixth places from a flying New Forest CC squad in the initial leg of the new inter-club competition with Sotonia CC provides a solid 10-point cushion for the return round at the end of May. John Heffernan led the Forest assault with a time of 22min 59sec on the Lyndhurst-Beaulieu Road Ipley Cross loop, a three-second improvement on his personal best and a near 30-second upgrade of his best for the course, on what was a rapidly cooling evening after a warm day.Teammate Gary Lock was a mere two seconds slower, 55 seconds faster than Sotonia’s best finisher, Gerwain Young with 23-56.New Forest’s Colin Humm was a further three seconds adrift in fourth while Sotonia’s Keiron Batt clocked 24-06 for fifth.Fifteen-year-old Hugo Walters was the fourth and final New Forest qualifier in sixth a just a few seconds off his all-time best with 24-49 while Philip Connell and Jon Dudley were Sotonia’s other two team counters collecting seven and eight points with 24-50 and 25-11 respectively.Southampton Tri Club’s Mike Zollo produced a good ride of 24-47, as did New Forest’s Geri Robinson with 25-06 and junior clubmate Konnor Bracher-Walsh who collected a new PB of 27-08.The event attracted a full evening card of 50 riders with several having to be refused entry on the line, including New Forest’s on-form Ben Boardman and Contre la Montre ace Julian Jenkinson.The second and final leg of the inter-club is a 15, starting at 7pm on the evening of Thursday, May 31. New Forest CC veteran Bob Jolliffe clocked a best for the past 14 years in the Lea Valley CC Middlemarkers’ 10 near Cambridge on Saturday finishing with a time of 27-41 riding fixed wheel. Cycle path racing!
Conditions were kind to New Forest CC member Nick Tattersall riding in Severn Road Club’s evening 10 near Bristol.However, road works meant almost a mile of the course had to be ridden on a cycle path which Nick reckons added about 20 seconds to his time of 25-41, 11 seconds faster than the previous week.The winner was again Peter Georgi of Giant CC-Halo Films with 21-24, 20 seconds slower than seven days previously.

Bob Jolliffe with his Forest View……….NEW Forest Cycling Club triathlete Gary Lock already has a stranglehold on Division One of his club’s evening 10-mile series after claiming his third victory in as many races.Strongman Lock zipped around two laps of the grinding Thorney Hill-Bransgore-Holmsley South circuit in 24min 24sec to beat his nearest challenger, clubmate Ben Boardman, by a clear 42 seconds.Third place went to Richard Schofield of Hantspol CC, one of just four visiting riders in the field of 33, who clocked 25-30.Another triathlete, New Forest CC’s Tony Rendell, took fourth with 25-48 from clubmate Stuart Peckham (26-09).Two evenings later, Ben Boardman was the only rider to beat 24 minutes in Bournemouth Arrow CC’s 10 on the Ringwood-Sopley course. His time of 23-52 in very windy conditions was 33 seconds too good for Poole Wheeler Leighton Girling.Third place went to second-claim New Forest CC member Martin Beale (VC St Raphael) with 24-40

while the previous week’s winner, New Forest’s Stuart Peckham was fourth with 25-49. Another second-claim NFCC rider, Rob Ellis (VC St Raphael) took sixth with 26-35.The previous weekend at Nomansland, Rowan Horner (VC St Raphael) beat Phil Reynolds (Peter Hansford Cycles) in the sprint to take victory in the 35-mile Sandie Radford Memorial Road Race, while last year’s winner Harry Bulstrode (Peter Hansford Cycles) was third at 18 seconds.

New Forest’s Stuart Peckham did well to finish in the bunch in what was his first road race. He said the pace was very high and he is looking forward to competing in more first-past-the-post events.

While Boardman was winning the Arrow event, GA Cycles’ Simon Barnes was doing likewise in Crabwood CC’s 10 on the Beaulieu Road-Ipley Cross loop, finishing with 23-12. Second place went to Southampton University CC’s Alex Clayton (23-26) while Sotonia CC’s Colin Yeates was third (24-12).Heavy rain led to the last-minute cancellation of the Hampshire Road Club 10-miler at Liss on Saturday. The Andover Wheelers are pleased to announce the Platforms Lift Company Summer warm up Circuits at Thruxton Circuit, which will be taking place on the evenings of Monday the 7th & 14th May. There will be Youth races from 6.30pm followed by E123 and 34JW races starting at 7.00pm and 7.01pm (concurrently like the Upavon races a few years ago).

Local Cycling Stuff

Dorset’s Daniel Lloyd (Garmin-Cervelo) had to settle for 10th place at the Tour of Britain. The Bournemouth-Based professional had quietly worked his way up to 3rd spot in this 8 day race, picking up time bonuses to improve his position. However the 10km time trial on the split final stage saw Lloyd lose time and slip down the general classification. The fast, flat circuit in the heart of the capital passed Big Ben and the Tower of London and was won by Team Sky’s Alex Dowsett. Dutchman, Lars Boom of the Rabobank team won the overall race after taking the lead on stage 2. Lloyd has a busy end of season with races in France and Italy still to come. Talking to “E D” he said; “I have Franco-Belge starting next Thursday, then Paris-Tours, Piemonte and the Tour Of Lombardy, so a fair way to go yet”

Gray & Bjergfelt.

National U23 Cyclo-Cross Champion, Luke Gray (Hargroves Cycles) got his winter season off to a great start, winning the South West League event in Devon. Gray had a race long battle with Will Bjergfelt (Motorpoint Procycling),the pair swapped the lead several times as they lapped the field. Bergfelt slipped whilst passing a back marker on the last lap and Gray siezed his chance.

It was a good test for the Broadstone-based rider. The previous day he had finished 3rd in the opening round of the Wessex League at Cowley, Oxford. Gray will be basing himself in Oudenaarde in Belgium for the Cross Season and will be competing in the GVA series and several other high ranking cross races. Gray will return for selected national races and intends to defend his U23 title at the National Championships.

A season’s best time of 52.36 saw Jones finish only 40 secs down on Former National Champion Julian Jenkinson (Utag-Yamaha).

NEW Forest CC crack juvenile Hugo Walters took a deserved fourth place in a third category adult circuit race at Alexandra Park, Portsmouth and followed through with a win in his club’s hill climb competition.Since having gained special permission to race with the seniors, Hugo, who is now 15 years old, has raced against Elite and first and second category riders at Alexandra Park, his best in those quality bunches being a 27th place.Then last week he competed in a third cat event, over 40 minutes plus three laps. In the final minutes Mitch Webber of Andover Wheelers broke away from the main field. Hugo and two others launched an attack to bridge the gap. Despite gritting their teeth and giving their all, they could not catch the flying Webber. But Hugo ended up fourth, his best placing in an adult field.In the third category race, New Forest CC teammates, dad Patrick Walters took 10th place and Graham Jones seventh.Flyweight Hugo had wings on Buddles Hill and then Ogdens Hill near Fordingbridge in New Forest CC’s hill climb on Sunday.He clocked 1min 44.7sec on Buddles to beat Jamie Pope by 13.3sec. Sam Jackson was third with 2-2.6. Shortly afterwards Hugo nipped up Ogdens Hill in 37.2sec to beat his father into second by four seconds.Pope, last year’s overall winner, failed to start at Ogdens. In the Sotonia CC open 25-mile between Andover and Popham on Sunday, John Heffernan recorded another personal best of 56-25 for eighth place, beating second claim member Martin Beale (VC St Raphael) into ninth by 25secs.

Gary Lock, who has recently produced acrop of fast 10 times, also clocked a "personal" dipping underthe hour for the first time with 59-42 for 14th.

Spare a thought for Forest veteran Terry Jefferies who punctured twice, once while warming up and then again six miles into the competition, Unsurprisingly, he did not finish.

Julia Shaw (Drag2Zero) placed 17th in the Elite Women's Time trial at the World Road Championships in Copenhagen.

On the flat, rain soaked course Shaw, who lives in Bramshaw in the New Forest clocked 38.57 for the 27.8km. Judith Arndt took the Title & Gold medal with atime of 37.07
Ashurst’s Jon Dibben (Hargroves Cycles), a former New Forest CC juvenile, will represent Great Britain in the 126km junior title race to be held on Saturday.His teammates will be Owain Doull, Matthew Holmes, Sam Lowe and Alistair Slater. (First year junior Dibben finished 8th in the 27.8km Time trial on Tuesday)

I was saddened to hear of the death of Eddie Beck (Poole Wheelers) last week. Eddie was always good company when marshalling at Holes Bay or some other windswept junction. Eddie was also a keen follower of "E D" and was always very supportive. See you up the road Eddie Beck.
