Bournemouth Arrow/Raymond Brown Track League 4

Gifting presents to others was in short supply as Harrison Fielding Poole Wheelers battered the opposition at the fourth Raymond Brown Track League Meeting at Bournemouth’s new 250m outdoor track. Harrison’s one dimensional tactic of constant attack proved too much for the others in all the A Group Events with the evening’s finale 40 lap Points Race proving particularly brutal. Gaining a lap before half distance with team-mate Andy Buddle, Harrison rounded off a clean sweep as it was left to Roland Tilley Ridebike and Leon Marshall Rutraining to pick up the scraps with timely efforts as the field broke up under the pressure.
The B Group saw the welcome return to the track of John Marriner Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers, a former World Masters Champion, and Dave Carter Bournemouth Arrow who showed his experience to pick up his first win since his 34th Nomads days in the B Group 12 lap Scratch. Wins also for Will Stevens Bournemouth Arrow in the B Group Sprint Challenge and Elimination Race put him in pole position for elevation to the A Group next week. Group B is proving to be fertile territory, less deep in the results than previous weeks are riders such as Jason Falconer Bournemouth Arrow who although completely new to track racing is clearly flourishing in the environment and proof of what can be achieved.
The organiser’s sympathies went to Jake Thomas Bristol Cycling Dev Squad who remains trapped in Youth events by regulations when he would clearly benefit most racing in the B Group. The other Youth events were carved up by the Poole Wheelers’ Pick Clan getting the better of fledgling Dightons and Hodkyns, none of whom lacked in vociferous support from previous generations of the Clans.

"Unfortunately we are going to have to postpone round 2 until Thursday 31st May as the local farmer will be doing silage in the nearby fields and there will be tractors on the course all evening.

We have tried racing before during silage week and it was dangerous, therefore postponing is the only option. We will be adding the 2 missed rounds so far on to the end of series.

Please pass this on to anyone you know who is planning to race this week and we hope to see you all next week."

Cycling Time Trials and the event promoters strongly advise you to wear a HARD SHELL HELMET that meets an
internationally accepted safety standard. In accordance with Regulation 15, ALL JUNIOR competitors must wear
protective hard-shell helmets.
It is recommended that a working rear light, either flashing or constant, is fitted to the machine in a position visible to
following road users and is active whilst the machine is in use.

Course
START in Caird Avenue opposite lamp post No.36 by Scout Hut
Proceed south to junction of A337 where left and east to Lymington. At the one-way system get into right hand lane to
town centre, give way to traffic on your left, get into the left hand lane and carry on down the High Street to bottom of
hill, great care, turn left along Gosport Street to mini roundabout. Turn right across level crossing, over river bridge, bear
left and follow the road across open forest to Hatchet Pond (10.8 miles). At junction with B3055 turn right, great care, and
follow the road to Beaulieu to join the B3056 to Lyndhurst (19 miles).
At Lyndhurst turn left into the town, great care, and then left into the one-way system. Get into right hand lane to Goose
Green and turn right and get into left hand lane to join A35 at Swan Green (20 miles). Continue along A35 to crossroads
at Cat and Fiddle pub, Hinton (30.3 miles). Turn left and go through Walkford to roundabout on A337 where turn left to
FINISH by Fawcetts Field sports ground opposite lamp post No.41 by west end of road island (32.3 miles)
Notes. Please keep noise down at the event HQ at the start of the event, there are houses nearby and it is a
Sunday morning! Remember that you are riding on public roads and for your own safety and for the future of the Sport
you are expected to keep to the spirit and letter of the Highway Code. Any rider observed riding in a manner which may
jeopardise his or her safety, the safety of others, or the future of the Sport will be disqualified and reported to the the
South DC of CTT.
Remember that there are animals roaming on the roads between Lymington and Lyndhurst, take great care, particularly
with the young foals that are now around, they are unpredictable!

BRAMSHAW’S Julia Shaw claimed her sixth consecutive 10-mile national 10-mile time trial championship win at Sawtry in Cambridgeshire on Sunday (MAY 20) morning.Riding for Drag2Zero, the popular New Forest-based powerhouse who, like national cycling gem Chris Boardman hails originally from the Wirral, tore around the 10 miles in 22 minutes 27 seconds to beat her nearest challenger Claire Galloway (For Voired RT) by more than a minute-and-a-half.Galloway’s 23-59 was two seconds too quick for London Dynamo’s Rebecca Slack who took bronze.The amazing Michael Hutchinson (In Gear-Quickvit-Trainsharp RT) won the men’s national 10 championship for the ninth time on the same course in the afternoon, clocking 19-40 to beat Matthew Bottrill (Drag2Zero) by 19 seconds while Nicolas Hutchings CS Grupetto) took bronze in 20-22.Totton’s Stephen Whitewick (Contre la Montre) shared 25th place with Hutchinson’s Conall Yates (21-35).
Three out of three for Gilfillan!

Contre la Montre’s James Gilfillan hit a purple patch last week, winning three time trials over three distances in four days.World class Ironman Gilfillan started his rout on Thursday in Bournemouth Arrow’s evening 10, went on to take the Sotonia 25 on Saturday and rounded off with a top performance in the chilly Wessex Road Club 50 on Sunday.Gilfillan won the 50 in a startlingly quick 1-49-59 from teammate Julian Jenkinson 1-51-22 and Poole Wheelers’ Gary Dighton 1-52-03.Southampton University Road Club pair George Crammond and Tim Wallace won the tandem event in 1-54-12. Other Southampton times: Marc Barfoot (Contre la Montre) 2-15-15, Linda Connor (Soton Tri Club) 2-27-24. Stuart Peckham became New Forest CC 50-mile champion when he finished his first test at the distance in an excellent 2-08-25.

Clubmate Chris Hughes, finished four minutes down with 2-12-31. He said: “Now I appreciate how tough a 50 TT is: You hurt in parts of your body that did not know existed."

Club secretary Peter Weaver clocked 2-33-07 while second claim New Forest member Stuart Grace (GA Cycles) finished with 2-13-44.

On Saturday Gilfillan romped around two-and-a-half laps of the Copythorne-based Sotonia CC circuit to win the club’s 25 in 53-52 from Hainault CC’s Russell Kober (54-40).Bournemouth Jubilee Wheeler Dave Pickering was third with 56-23, Shirley-based GA Cycles’ boss Gary Allan took fourth in 57-18 from Sotonia’s Stuart Martingale with 58-06.Two days earlier, Gilfillan won the regular Bournemouth Arrow CC Thursday 10 at Ringwood, ripping around the roughly surfaced “rumble strip” in 21-57, 18 seconds quicker than Primera-Specialized’s Will Stephenson. Third went to the Arrow’s Phil Mosley in 22-27.New Forest’s Stuart Peckham took eighth with 25-09, second claim member Rob Ellis (VC St Raphael) was 12th with 25-43, Howard Doe 14th with 26-05 and Bob Jolliffe 22nd with 30-38.

Stephenson Defends Title at The Divs!!

Will Stephenson (Primera/Specialized) defended his Southern Division Junior Title with some panache. Stephenson was away for most of the race with Mitch Webber (Andover Wheelers).

The pair had broken away on the second lap, chasing Simon Healy (Andover Wheelers). Healey was part of the supporting race that had started with the juniors and also included the women’s race. Stephenson & Webber made contact with Healey and the gap to the bunch would prove decisive.

Although in different races it was inevitable that Healey and Webber would work together, Stephenson was aware however and kept enough in the legs to attack through the feed zone. By the time he took the chequered flag he had a gap of more than 3 minutes on Webber and Healey, the latter easily winning the supporting race. Kimberly Ashton (Abergavenny RC) won the women’s title finishing ahead of Adele Tyson-Bloor.

New Womens Champion, 24 year old Kimberley Ashton said,"It was good fun, i have never ridden this course before, its hilly so it suits me down to ther ground. My aim was obviously to be first lady but if the juniors attack to try to go with them and see what happens. I am feeling strong at the moment and its nice to get a win. I have a week off then the Tour Series, the national series and the Nationals. I like the hills, i think if i am suffering then they must be"

Wessex 50:Weekend Double for Gilfillan! Full Results

James Gilfillan (Contre la Montre) made it a weekend double, winning the Wessex RC 50 at Bere Regis. On a murky, still morning, Gilfillan clocked 1.49.59 to beat team mate Julian Jenkinson, 1.51.22. 24 hours earlier Gilfillan had won the Sotonia 25 in 53.52. Gary Dighton(Poole Wh) put in a good ride for third place with 1.52.02

Bjergfelt wins Southern Division Road Race Title

An emotional Will Bjergfelt (Cycle Premier-kovert) whooped with sheer delight as he crossed the line to win the Southern Divisiona road race title. It was a tough race, the 29 finishers from over 70 starters, testament to the challenge of the course. Based in the Hampshire town of Stockbridge, the peloton rolled out along a two mile neutralized before it was “game on “and six 13 mile laps in the Test Valley. After a few early digs, first to show was Alec Baskaya (Dream Cycling), Martin Smith (Primal Europe), Jason Flooks (Velo Club Bristol) & Tavis Walker (Willier/Live2ride).

Flooks started the move on the second lap, the other three latched on and the gap quickly grew to over a minute. Smith, who pulled out due to a back injury, said later, “Four riders away on this course is not enough, it’s a brutal circuit” The quartet worked hard and stayed away for over a lap but Smith was right and they were reeled in. To say the race was back together would be wrong, riders were being shelled out the back as the course and pace took its toll. Chris Spence (Felt Colbournes Racing Team) held a slender lead through the finish area with two laps remaining but it was going nowhere. Mark Perry (Willier/live2ride) was the next to go, opening up a small lead with under two laps to go. Luke Dunbar & Conor Ryan (Performance Cycles CMI) Jack Adams (Zappis Pro cycling) & Bjergfelt clipped across and alarm bells were ringing in the chasing pack.

At the bell the five had 30 seconds but a group of four were chasing hard. Colin Parry (Willier/live2ride) & Tom Stockdale (Primal Europe) made contact with 3 miles to go and it was into the finale. Stockdale put in a big attack that only Bjergfelt and Parry could live with. As Stockdale faded Parry made his move but Bjergfelt would not be denied and was still celebrating 300 metres past the chequered flag.

“ I am so happy, my first win of the year, I really, really wanted this for my team, cycle premier covert, I wanted to show them that I can get wins as well as just place well. I had a good week last week at Lincoln place top 20, on the tour series I had a 12th at Durham which is a hard man’s course, I had a couple of slips but luckily I was not badly hurt. I am over the moon to win today, I last rode the race in 2010, I won it then it’s a really hilly course here, it is genuinely a hard course, with three laps to go there were only 25 guys left in the race. Colin Parry has been unbelievable all year, we trained together earlier in the year in Spain, I taught him a few trade secrets and he has been hard to beat ever since. Towards the end he started to do his hard man thing, where he knuckles down and puts out about 450 watts that spat everyone bar me. He started sprinting, he had a good kick but he started to slow, I went hard on the right and got it! I am especially happy to have got it today”

“I jumped across to the break, I had Mark Perry in there so I managed to hide at the back for a bit. I went early I was hoping to drop everyone, turned out I dropped everyone except Will, it was too early. I tried to jump away a couple of times but Will is a strong rider and going well. It’s a tough course, I prefer to go early, I prefer to go early to give myself a chance, one of the Performance riders got passed us for a bit but faded. I am having a weekend off next week, the first for a long time”

National Youth Omnium Series, Southern Area

Poole Wheelers promoted round 2 of the British Cycling southern area Omnium series at the Bournemouth track. Organiser Graham Hurst was pleased with an entry of over 90 riders, representing clubs from all over the region, From Colchester in the East to Newport, Wales in the west, youngsters from 8 to 16 provided a great day of competition. The Omnium is a multi- race event with points awarded in reverse order; the rider with the lowest points score is the winner. The youth Omnium series comprises 5 events, scratch, elimination, points, sprint & time trial. The Omnium will replace the individual pursuit, Madison & points race at the London Olympics and consist of 6 events (including IP).

Harrison Fielding (Poole Wh) dominated the uU16 boys category. Always on the front, his aggressive “race face” now a familiar sight at the new venue. Kimberley English (Welwyn Wh) had to work harder in the u16 girls, her team mate Bethany Hayward pushing her hard. The Welwyn girls, the green team, were all over the days racing and looked very impressive. Jack Plumley (Welwyn wh) tied on 9 points in the u14 boys with Max Bergin (VC Londres). Plumley getting the verdict on his faster time trial. Charlotte Cole- Hossain (VC Londres) triumphed in the U13 girls, Noah Ridgeway-Brown,(Preston Park Youth CC) the U12, Joseph Latham (Welwyn Wh), the U10 & Sam Reed the U8
