Raymond Brown Track League 14/ Results & Final League Standings

Adam d’Arcy-Wykes (VC ST Raphael/Waites Contracts) won the inaugural Raymond Brown Track league after 14 weeks of competition. Back in May, when the league started Wykes was clearly off the pace but as the rounds passed his form and fitness visibly improved. Third place in the elimination race was the best result on the night for Wykes but the £100 first prize was already his. Dominant early leader, Harrison Fielding (Poole Wheelers) fell victim to his packed racing schedule and his challenge faded. Fielding finished in second place overall despite missing the final round. Steve Moss (Bournemouth Arrow/Hotel Collingwood) & Leon Marshall (Rutrainingtoday CC) were tied for third place going into the final race of the league, the 40 lap scratch, both finished out of the points so the spoils were shared. Speaking as he warmed down on the rollers in the “D” Wykes said "I am pleased to have done it, the younger legs of Fielding had the better of me early on but it is my first season back on the track and I started to find my legs a little bit. I am really pleased to win the league in memory of my good mate Rob Jefferies. We rode together from the Leicester National champs days in the 80s and 90s and also rode Madison together.”

Ellie Gilham made it a victorious double for VC ST Raphael by winning the B league, Jason Falconer(Bournemouth Arrow/Hotel Collingwood) hung on to second place despite missing the last few weeks racing. Jason was seriously injured in a road traffic accident in early July but is well on the mend. Les Pick (Poole Wheelers) claimed third place. Alan MaCrae writes......In the final evening of racing, the A Group £100 prize for top spot remained firmly in the hands of Adam Wykes (VC St Raphael), Harrison Fielding (Poole Wheelers) had a similar clear water lead for 2nd but it was to the wire for 3rd with Leon Marshal (Rutrainingtoday) starting the night only 4 points behind Steve Moss (Bournemouth Arrow). Moss snatched 1 point in the 8 lap Scratch but Marshall took back this and more with a 2nd place in the 20 lap Points where Moss failed to score. A win for Marshall in the Elimination Race had little impact with Moss sitting tight in second spot. Everything was then set for a battle for 3rd spot Overall with Marshall and Moss going into the Finale 10Km Scratch on level points after fighting it out all season over 40 League Races. Wherever Marshall went so went Moss, both almost oblivious to the other race moves. With Marshall clearly the stronger, the final twist was that both riders missed the race winning move as 5 other riders moved clear. With them went all the counting race points leaving honours even, equal 3rd for the two protagonists.
At the top of B Group, it was all up for grabs. Jason Falconer (Bournemouth Arrow) and Les Pick (Poole Wheelers) were holding the top 2 places but, for different reasons, neither were riding. Occupying 3rd and 4th were Ellie Gilham (VC St Raphael) and James Brightwell (Bournemouth Arrow), the key question being could either do enough on the night to overhaul Falconer and Pick or would they, like Marshall and Moss, nullify each other’s chances. Up stepped Gilham with 3 race placings in the top 3 bringing her Overall Points tally to 62, just 3 ahead of the previous leader Falconer. Brightwell was less dominant claiming 2 race placings in the top 3 which was not enough to disturb the top 3 Overall League positions. The B Group £70 top prize went to Gilham with Falconer and Pick both reflecting on opportunities missed.
From a reduced field size in the Youth League, the racing remained as fierce as the vocal support and a huge effort by Rebecca Hurst (Poole Wheelers) proved to be just short as she closed the gap Overall on Ryan Hodgkyns (Poole Wheelers) to a tantalising 4 points after a tightly fought season. All the competitors justifiably deserved a share of the £100 of prizes on offer.
Attention al most the other League riders now moves to the BH Track Championships, covering Sprint, Scratch Race, Team Sprint and Team Pursuit with £100 to each winner. First event is Tuesday 14th August.

Alan MaCrae writes……1 week to go and the strong riders involved in the battle for the top 3 spots were focussing on the “race within each race” to protect or improve their Overall League position. As if being in intensive care less than 2 weeks ago wasn’t bad enough, Jason Falconer (Bournemouth Arrow) could only look on as Les Pick (Poole Wheelers) chipped away all evening at his overall lead in Group B, ending the night with just a 3 point buffer remaining from his previous exploits. Sidelined for the rest of the season, if anyone is praying for rain next Tuesday, it is Jason. Ellie Gilham (VC St Raphael) has a stronger hold on 3rd place, James Brightwell (Bournemouth Arrow) has a 16 point gap to close, so any points picked up next week should signal “job done” for Gilham.
At the top of A Group, Adam Wykes (VC St Raphael), Harrison Fielding (Poole Wheelers), Steve Moss (Bournemouth Arrow) and Leon Marshall (Rutrainingtoday) all had their lowest scoring night of the season. This coincided with the arrival for the first time of Neil Rutter (Swindon RC), Thomas Rotherham (Sport City Velo) and Gawain Bailey (Zappi’s CC), all of whom took their opportunities while the local big guns’ attention was elsewhere. The biggest potential upset came in the final A/B Group 10 Km Scratch where Leon Marshall slipped into a strong break of Will Stephenson (Primera), Roland Tilley (Ridebike) and Jay Eastwood (Primera). With 25 laps to go they lapped the field at a punishing 28 mph and, of the top 4 contenders overall, it was only Moss who kept a clear head to salvage points from 5th place, limiting Marshall’s gain to 2 points in the race, with both riders picking up 6 points on the night. Moss still holds a 4 point buffer for 3rd place Overall.
Handicapping of Olympic standard provided excellent racing in the Youth League, particularly in the opening 1 lap Sprint, where there was barely space across the track as 5 riders fought out a blanket finish. Overall is not cut and dried with Ryan Hodgkyns (Poole Wheelers) holding top spot overall with Rebecca Hurst (Poole Wheelers) chipping away 6 points on the night and leaving a 9 point gap for her to close on the final night next week.

Raymond Brown Track League 12

Adam d’Arcy-Wykes (VC ST Raphael) dominated the latest round of the Raymond Brown track league, winning all of the “A” group races. Poole-based Wykes won the 8& 16 lap scratch races, the elimination race and the closing 40 lap combined scratch event. League leader Harrison Fielding (Poole Wheelers) was below par after a tough block of training and his blistering turn of speed was clearly missing. Will Stephenson (Primera/Specialized) pushed hard but had to take second best to Wykes. Veteran Steve Moss (Bournemouth Arrow) used all of his experience to take a well-deserved 2nd place in the elimination race.

In the “B” group, Bournemouth Jubilee Wheeler Will Clark, making his debut on the track, won the scratch & Elimination races. In two invitation match sprints, Gordon Skillen (PW) got the better of Ellie Gilham (VC ST Raphael), whilst John Friend (Off Camber) proved too quick for Les Pick (PW). There are just two remaining meetings for riders to score points, for a share of the £700 prize fund. The “BH” championships, set for August, will carry a prize fund of £900 and are only open to riders with a Bournemouth postcode.
Alan MaCrae writes....With just 2 weeks of Track League racing left, riders are now looking closely at the Overall League Tables. With Jason Falconer (Bournemouth Arrow) now thankfully recovering well in Poole Hospital from a road traffic accident, his buffer over improving Les Pick (Poole Wheelers) at the top of the B Group is down to 14 points with Ellie Gilham (VC St Raphael) pressing hard just one point further back. This week’s arrival in the B Group of Will Clark (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers) showed he picked up sufficient track experience in the Wednesday Intermediate Sessions to be a force to reckon with. 3 B Group wins in one night and a 5th place in the final A/B Group 10 KM Scratch shows Clark has track potential.
As much as Clark dominated the B Group, Adam Wykes opened a 10 point gap at the top of the A Group with 3 wins. Wykes rounded the night off in the closing A/B 10 Km Scratch Race edging past Will Stephenson (Primera) who had put in a strong last kilo, with Steve Moss (Bournemouth Arrow) hanging on to Wykes’ final surge to snatch 2nd in the last couple of meters. With Wykes and Harrison Fielding (Poole Wheelers) now well clear of Moss in the overall A Group Table, the focus in the last 2 weeks will be on Wykes v Fielding for top spot and Moss holding off Leon Marshall (Rutrainingtoday) for 3rd overall.
With the A League having a top prize of £100 and prizes down to 10th, and the B League a £70 top prize and prizes down to 8th, the League is building to a very exciting climax.
Excellent handicapping spread the wins around in the Youth League with only Alistair Fielding coming out top in 2 events. Once again the human paced race proved the best Youth event of the evening with a win for Luke Dighton (Poole Wheelers). Ryan Hodgkyns remains in top spot overall, Rebecca Hurst (Poole Wheelers) lies in 2nd with Dighton 3rd.

Raymond Brown Track League 9

Round 9 of the Raymond Brown Track League produced some keen racing in a programme dominated by distance. A series of scratch & points races for both the A& B groups tested fitness and track craft. Two invitation Olympic sprint races offered something for the faster chess players! In the B group, James Brightwell (Bournemouth Arrow) continues to improve winning the opening 8-lap scratch race, then taking the first sprint match, getting the better of John Friend (Off Camber).

Daryl Price (Poole Wheelers) won the second sprint race, easily seeing off Dave Gilham (Bournemouth Arrow).

Chris Braiden (Port Talbot Wheelers) took the 20 lap points race before Les Pick (Poole Wheelers) won a 16 lap scratch. It was Picks first win “since the nineties” and there was vocal celebration as he crossed the line.

In the A group the all-conquering Harrison Fielding continues to steam roller the field. Fielding won every event including the final 80 lap scratch race. Adam D’Arcy-Wykes (VC ST Raphael/Waites Contracts) has raised his game and is starting to stretch Fielding.

Wykes took two laps in the 20km event but found himself in a Poole Wheelers sandwich with Fielding & Andy Buddle. There was certainly some edge in the final few laps as Wykes tried to find a way to win. Fielding’s turn of speed usually proves decisive but perhaps his victory salute was too much too soon as Wykes never gave up, nearly “nicking” it on the line.

A lot of racing was packed into this week’s Raymond Brown Track League and really tested rider’s endurance as much as their speed. As early as the 8 Lap Group A Scratch the speed of Adam Wykes, VC St Raphael, Harrison Fielding and Andy Buddle, Poole Wheelers, and Steve Moss, Bournemouth Arrow was evident as they moved clear of the field with Fielding taking the win. Invitation Match Sprinting returned, with James Brightwell, Bournemouth Arrow getting the better of fellow track newcomer John Friend, Offcamber with both showing sprint potential. In the other match the Poole Wheelers Daryl Price held off the strong challenge of Bournemouth Arrow’s Dave Gilham.
Les Pick, Poole Wheelers, proved it is not all about newcomers picking up wins in the Group B 20 lap Points Race and the 16 Lap Scratch Race with a demonstration of the effective use of limited resources. Ellie Gilham, VC St Raphael and Barrie Watkinson, Bournemouth Arrow, were active in the Points Race but it was Jason Falconer, Bournemouth Arrow, Brightwell and Stuart Root, Yeovil CC who picked up the minor p[lacings. Leon Marshall, Rutrainingtoday got in on the big gun’s act as a group of 4 riders dominated the Group A 16 Lap Scratch with Fielding sqeezing out an improving Wykes on the line.
The last event of the night, the Harold Cribb 20Km Scratch was ample proof of just how tough the previous races had been for all riders. Buddle, Harrison and Wykes moved clear with 4 others after 7 laps of the 80 and had shed them to lap the field after just 13 laps. The second lapping of the disintegrating main bunch came after 30 laps with the whole race down to 13 riders by the half distance. Alex Harding, Andover CC, John Marriner, Bournemouth Jubillee Wheelers and Ellie Gilham all tried to slip away from a very tired bunch as the big 3 took another lap. The whole field was together come the final run for the line where yet again Fielding just got it in a hotly contested stampede ahead of Wykes.
The human paced race again proved the best event of the Youth racing with Ryan Hodgkyns, Poole Wheelers, running out winner of all but one and picking up a second in that. Hodgkyns sits top of the Youth League, Falconer the B League and Harrison moves back to top of the A League.
