Gregg Shrosbree (MERIDA) was disappointed to finish second in round 10 of the Moreton Evening series in Dorset. The 19 year old had scored his first win on the road last weekend at the Brentor Road Race in Devon and was hungry for more. Shrosbree along with Andy Hargroves (Hargroves Cycles) had attacked the bunch and had a good gap as they approached the bell lap.

Unfortunately they were too quick for the timekeeper, who failed to sound the bell in time for them to hear. Hargroves team mates, Eastwood and Bowers policed the bunch and the gap grew.

Sensing that something was wrong, the duo agreed to roll across the line together. However the chequered flag came into sight and Hargroves called off the truce, easily winning the sprint, Shrosbree though, did appear not to contest the finish. He will not lose sleep over it though, “It’s only training” he said.

Andy Hargroves was racing Moreton for the first time; the Hampshire based team are dominating the series with wins already for Eastwood & Luke Gray. Eastwood picked up the scraps in the sprint for third place and looks good to repeat his overall win of last year.

Gregg Shrosbree (Merida) scored his first Road Race win at the Brentor event in Devon. Shrosbree rode aggressively throughout the 40 mile race but could not escape the bunch. However one big effort in the last few miles saw the Sandbanks rider go clear. Broadstone Based Luke Gray (Hargroves Cycles) and Andy Boyd (Revo Racing) managed to get across to Shrosbree but had no answer when the Merida rider kicked again.

Gray took second with Boyd third. Nineteen year old Shrosbree was happy with his maiden win on the road and is already looking ahead “My plans for the rest of the season are to get as many points as I can, before I go the Alps and then on to Belgium to tackle the big boys in the Kermesses at the end of August. Plans for next year include a first category license, a bigger team and the National Champs. Shrosbree is a talented rider, perhaps he needs to find the killer instinct to deliver his worthy ambitions.

James Gilfillan (Team Feat) won the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 25 mile Time Trial, on the Upton course.

The world age group triathlon champion’s time of 52.28 put nearly 2 minutes into his nearest challenger, Tom Alliban (Revo Racing) 54.25. Ringwood -Based Gilfillan has recently ridden the Race across America (RAAM) and proved too strong for the pure cyclists. Gary Dighton (Poole Wheelers), 54.38 came third, leading the winning team of Terry Icke & Steve Birtwistle. Judith Martin won the ladies race to make it a good day for the Poole club. Gilfillan is off to France next week for “Le Alpe D’uez Triathlon, the 115km bike leg finishes at the top of the famous climb with the following 22km run around the ski station. Meanwhile Winton rider Claire Day (Born to Bike) won her second gold medal at the 100 mile time trial championships. The former Bournemouth Jubilee member repeated her success of last year, recording 4.20.56 as part of the winning ladies team. "Crap day! crap legs!, you know the story, i grovelled around determined to finish so we could win the team award and i ended up winning my age group as well!" said Claire.

• Ridebike.co.uk trio, Mark Chadbourne, Simon Willats and Roland Tilley claimed 3 of the top 5 placings in round 4 of the Southern X country MTB series. Chadbourne was best placed in second spot. Carol Tilley won the veteran ladies race. All four will be in action this weekend at the National X country Championships at Richmond, North Yorkshire.

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 25

James Gilfillan (Team Feat) won the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 25 mile Time Trial, on the Upton course, west of Poole. The world age group triathlon champion put nearly 2 minutes into his nearest challenger, Tom Alliban (Revo Racing).

On what most riders described as a “good morning” the 62 strong field showed only 9 improvements. Sometimes no wind does not equal fast times. Gilfillan has recently ridden the Race across America (RAAM) and had too much in his legs for the pure cyclists.

Gary Dighton (Poole Wheelers) came third, leading the winning team of Terry Icke & Steve Birtwistle. Dighton had spent the week in France watching the tour and felt refreshed, due to the cancellation of the midweek club event, Icke had not raced for a week and felt “rubbish”.

A fast and furious race saw junior Will Stephenson (Bournemouth Arrow/Hotel Collingwood) taking victory right on the line.

The fast moving scratch group was taking no prisoners tonight and the race was all together with more than three laps remaining. As soon as the catch was made the attacks came thick and fast with slower riders being shelled out the back!

Simon Willats (Ridebike.co.uk) escaped with three laps to go and with ever-fit teammates Roland Tilley & Mark Chadbourne riding shotgun the move was looking good.However, Hargroves Cycles pair, Luke Gray & series leader Jason Eastwood had other ideas and by the bell Willats was back in the bunch.

Eastwood had won at the Mountbatten centre, Portsmouth, the night before and must have been licking his lips at the bunch sprint that was about to unfold. National U23 Cyclo-Cross Champion, Luke Gray gave his teammate the perfect lead out but coming up fast and unnoticed on the inside was Stephenson. The sixteen year old took it on the line from the sprint specialist Eastwood; the youngster is enjoying a great season and looked strong and confident in the dramatic finale. Tilley, consistent as ever, grabbed third in the exciting dash for the line.

Luke Gray (Hargroves Cycles) won round 6 of the summer series at Ludgershall in Wiltshire. The 40 minute + 5 lap race on the Army testing track started slowly with a few half hearted attacks. Four riders eventually got away and established a small gap. Gray, wanting some of the action attacked off the front of the peloton, taking just over a lap to join up with the lead group. Working well together they stayed away, with Gray proving the strongest in the sprint.

• Louise Burman (A3CRG) came away from the National Masters Track Championships at Newport Velodrome with a silver & bronze medal. Burman came second in the 2 KM pursuit but was disappointed with her third place in the 500 metre time trial. “I have ridden faster in training but on the day I just didn’t get it all out” she said.

Burman will be working on her starts ahead of the Europeans in Montichiari, Italy in August and the World Masters in Manchester in October. Bryce Dyer (VC ST Raphael) won a silver medal in the 1KM Time Trial. Dyer was "pretty happy" with the result. "When you are up against pure specialists even getting a medal is a result"

• Poole Wheelers trio, Richard Martin, Andy Buddle and Cliff Free recorded a time of 1.34.36. However this was only good enough for 20th place at the National Team Time Trial Championships. On a rolling 36 mile course at Rake in Hampshire, the SIS.com team was clear winners with 1.15.34.

Terry Jeffries (New Forest cc) traveled to Cirencester for the Corinium 25. The 63 year old veteran was rewarded with a season’s best time of 58.46.Jeffries was frustrated the following day however, as road works forced the cancellation of the Bristol South 10,it looked like a "float day" as well.

Para-Cycling World Champions, Barney Storey (MBE) & Sarah Storey (OBE)were both at Bournemouth Track last weekend.

Tandem Pilot, Barney, gave a master class in Tandem Track riding and was also busy constantly changing Stokers, all keen to try out the new track. Barney & Sarah have just ridden the Deloitte John o Groats to Lands End ride, raising money for the 2012 paralympics.

Sarah will soon start her build up to the Para-Cycling world Road Championships in Denmark in September. Riding with her team, Horizon Fitness/Prendas Ciclismo, she will get the best preparation possible ahead of the Worlds.

Barney will focus on track work with less racing before thoughts turn to the World Championships in Los Angeles in February 2012.

• Sally Bigham (Ergon-Topeak) won the 95km Kitzalp MTB marathon in Austria. Poole based Bigham is in good form and the 4400 metres of climbing in this tough race suited her. Her win comes on the back of a solid 6th place at the World Marathon Championships.
• Confusion reined at the Southern Area downhill Championships. Problems with the timing system in the UK BIKE PARK event at Okeford Hill meant that no results have yet been released and no champion declared.
• James Gilfillan (Team feat) will start favourite for this Sundays Jubilee 25 mile Time Trial. Poole based Gilfillan has just completed the Race across America.

The 4 man Team Feat squad finished second in the 5 day race across the USA. Expected to challenge the triathlete will be Steve Clark (Team Milton Keynes) and Tom Alliban (Revo Racing). Local hopes lie with Gary Dighton & Terry Icke (Poole Wheelers & Paul Jones (BJW)
