Sarah Storey (Horizon/Prendas Ciclismo) successfully defended both her world titles at the Para-Cycling World Championships in Denmark. Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 2nd claim member, Storey, stormed to victory in the 9.6km Time Trial her winning time of 20.52 for the twisting course was over a minute faster than silver medalist, Anna Harkowska of Poland. The Polish rider put up a strong fight in the road race but Storey proved just too strong in the sprint finish. It was a hatrick for the GB rider; having won both titles in 2009 & 2010 and laid down a marker for the Paralympic games in London next year.

Talent Team member, Crystal Lane was dissapointed with 9th place in the time trial. Lane, riding her first world championships produced a super ride in the road race to win the bronze medal.

Other GB medalists included Mark Colbourne silver in the C1 time trial, Simon Price, bronze C2 road race,

Shaun Mckeown C3 Time Trial Bronze, David Stone(Trike) Time Trial Silver, Rachel Morris, bronze hand cycle road race & Karen Darke bronze in the hand cycle TT & Road Race

Tickets for the 2012 games went on sale last week and are expected to sell out, a first for Paralympic sport. Verwoods Darren Kenny had a disappointing championship. Kenny finished well down in the time trial and crashed out in the road race.

PostScript: As a carer for the GB squad part of my duties included driving a team car to the championships. A flight up to Manchester and on to the Velodrome to load the vehicles, 2 vans & 2 cars. The Holiday Inn in Manchester, then drive down to Folkestone to the Channel Tunnel. On through France, Belgium,Holland and a hotel in Northern Germany. Up early the next morning for a 2 hour drive to catch a ferry across to Denmark. Another 2 hours to the Hotel then quickly over to the airport to pick the athletes up. The return journey was much the same, a greasy spoon on the Germany/Holland border provided supper. Checking into a hotel on the outskirts of Gent,Belgium, we had broken the back of the trip. Back through the tunnel the following morning, gaining an hour i was back in Dorset for lunch. Sleep was a welcome visitor that night!

Kobi Joyce (Bournemouth BMX) clinched the British BMX series title at the weekend. The 12 round, season long series came down to the last race with Joyce needing to win to take the title. The 8 year old who races in the 9 yr male category duly took the victory to top the national rankings.

Joyce is now a double British Champion, having won the under 8 title last year and is set to defend his title at the National Championships at Cheddar Gorge.

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheeler, Paul Jones had to settle for second place in the Bognor Regis 25 mile TT. Jones time of 54.46 was only 9 seconds adrift of in- form Sebastian Ader (a3crg). Winton-Based, Claire Day (Born to Bike) clocked a seasons best 57.09 at the VTTA 25 in Wales. Day is currently lying in 4th place in the British Best All Rounder rankings. Husband Tim recorded a lifetime best 58.03 in the same event.

Local Weekly Round up

• Poole based Roland Tilley (ridebike.co.uk) had to settle for second place in the Swindon RC 50 mile road race. Mountain biker, Tilley, is no stranger to road racing and has been racing locally and nationally for over 25years. During that time he has twice won the “Divs”, (divisional road race title) and competed in some of the early, televised city centre races back in the Eighties. . In the TLI event, held at Little Somerford near Swindon, Tilley, finished behind winner, Simon Baynes (Giant CC) in the four 12.5m lap race. Jason Abbott (Sprockets.com) finished 23rd. In recent years, Tilley, from Ensbury Park, has been predominantly racing the rough stuff and consistently gets on the Podium. This weekend Tilley will be Off-Road again at round two of the Southern Cross Country series at Wasing near Reading. Hugo Walters finally picked up a win at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth, winning the under 16s. Team mates John Heffernan, Morgan Williams and Andy Betteridge all finished in the bunch in the Senior race as did Sean Conway, Will Stephenson (Bournemouth Arrow/Hotel Collingwood) & Cayden Zepp (BJW). Jason Eastwood (Hargroves) came 9th at the Goodwood Gallops, rnd 3 on the famous motor racing circuit. Last years Moreton Series winner is coming into form after a slow start this year.

• Commonwealth Games bronze medalist, Julia Shaw (drag2zero) started the defence of her national circuit series title. Bramshaw, New Forest based Shaw travelled to Doncaster to win round three of the Rudy Project sponsored eight race series. Shaw prefers the longer distances but still finished a minute clear on the 13 mile circuit. The final round of the series, in October, will be promoted by the Poole Wheelers using an undulating course around Wareham Forest. New Forest CC veterans, Terry Jeffries & Bob Jolliffe were in action over the weekend, Jolliffe riding the Farnham RC 10 & returning 29.28. Jeffries rode the Didcot Phoenix 25 for 1.01.10. Claire & Tim Day (Born to Bike) also rode the Farnham event, 23.20 and 24.05, respectively

• Sarah Storey (Horizon Fitness/Prendas) picked up two gold medals in Sidney at the Para-Cycling Road world cup event. Storey, whose team is sponsored by Parkstone cycle clothing suppliers, Prendas Ciclismo, won both the Time Trial and the Road Race. Before she left for Australia, Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers, second claimer, Storey, won the Bedford 2 day women’s stage race for the second year running.

• Rally driver Marcus Dodd (Driven to Tri) won the Dorset Sprint triathlon at Wimborne. The former winner of the local Sunseeker Rally made quick work of the 250 metre swim, 10 mile cycle & 3 mile run, to finish with a time of 47.20, to finish over a minute clear of second placed Dan Brunton.

Work is finally underway to lay the top surface on the new cycle track at Ensbury Park. The smooth tarmac should be down by the end of the month. Trials are planned for June and the Bournemouth Cycling Centre should be open for use in July.

• Poole-Based mountain biker, Sally Bigham (Topeak-Ergon) has just returned home after a hectic few weeks travelling and racing. A year’s sabbatical from her Bournemouth University job, has given her the time to concentrate on cycling, and the extra training time is starting to pay dividends. Bigham, with Karien Van Jaarsveld, recently won the Cape Epic stage race in South Africa and followed up that victory with second place at the Rocky Mountain Bike Marathon at Riva Del Garda, Italy. The 105 KM course included 3561 meters of climbing with lots of technical descents, made tricky after a few days rain. Sally loves this race and after missing out last year due to injury,was glad to be back. So glad in fact, she had been training in the Italian mountains the week before the event. Bigham was forced to give second best to the Finnish cyclist, Pia Sundstedt, who proved too strong on the long mountain climbs. Bigham’s time of 5hrs 7 was only 3 minutes behind the flying Finn.

She will now focus on the European and World Championships next month, “I am hoping to improve on my 7th & 8th placing’s last year. After that I will race the Trans Alp, an 8 day stage race in July. I will also be racing in other, big one day marathon events in Austria,Norway and France” Said Sally.

• Warming up for the National Championships in Hartelepool in two weeks’ time, Stephen Whitewick (Utag Yamaha) won the Hampshire RC 10 mile time trial. Recording a time of 20.21, Whitewick finished 21 seconds ahead of team mate and British Best All-Rounder, Julian Jenkinson. Terry Icke (Poole Wh), with 22.19 finished in 8th place. Whitewick will face stiffer competition at the National 10 Champs, with Olympic gold medalist Bradley Wiggins (Sky Pro Cycling) expected to take the title. Other locals in the mix were
J Thacker (vc st Raphael) 22.27, J Chapman (cc Weymouth) 23.10, N Spencer (BJW) 23.34, R Martin (Poole WH) 23.38, T Jeffries (NFCC) 24.49, Judith Martin (PW) 27.50. Claire Day (Born to Bike) won the Ladies race at the Ogmore Valley Wheelers 25. With a time of 1.01.19 on the R25 in Wales, Claire also finished ahead of husband Tim,1.02.48.

This years Moreton Village circuit series kicks off next Thursday, 12th May. Long time promoter, Pete Washington is standing down this year so the series is being run on a Co-Operative bases. All riders hoping to race will be expected to marshall at least one event in the 13 race series. Enough people have already volunteered to officiate at the first race. You can sign up to marshall on the date of your choice on the Series website; moretoncycleraces.org.uk. Racing is under The League International rules with a handicap format. The Moreton circuit is fast and flat with three corners that come round quickly, race distance is about 30 miles/1hr 10m. Entry is on the line with the first group off at 7pm.
Hugo Walters (NFCC) Picked up 4th in the U16s at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth last Saturday, Walters team mate John Heffernan & Steve Moss & Ellie Gilham (Bournemouth Arrow/Hotel Collingwod) were also racing.

• Rob Jeffries (Poole WH) consistently picks up results on the track, at the Bank Holiday meeting at Palmer Park Velodrome, Reading. Jeffries won the B sprint final and placed 2nd in the Derny Paced race. His team mate Gordon Skillen, however was not so lucky, a crash in the final race of the meeting saw Gordon T Bone a couple of riders. He left some skin on the track but was more concerned about his broken frame. Meanwhile, Alex Rowe (BJW) came off in a downhill MTB event and sustained a broken elbow, (did mine in a RR two years ago and i can tell you its very painful). Apparently Alex hit a tree!!
