Bournemouth Arrow Good Friday 10

Julian Jenkinson (Contre la Montre) surprised himself by winning the Bournemouth Arrow Good Friday 10. Never a fan of the shorter distances, the former BBAR still recorded 21.08 on the Bulbury-Upton course in Dorset.

Another former winner of the British Best All Rounder competition, Gary Dighton (Poole Wheelers), finished 16 seconds down on Jenkinson. Dighton’s team mate, Andy Buddle is in good form, claiming third place WITH 21.33 in a competitive field. Sixty eight year old, Terry Icke backed up Dighton & Buddle to give Poole Wheelers the team award.

A sharp frost made it “chilly” for the early starters but the bright sunshine and calm conditions produced a few “PBs”. Claire Day (Born to Bike) started her season with a win, her 24041 giving her the ladies prize. Julian Thacker (VC ST Raphael) was one of a couple of riders who lost time when the emergency traffic lights turned red to give a fire engine access at Holes Bay. Poole Wheelers junior, Harrison Fielding was looking strong but suffered an asthma attack and was forced to pack.

Steven Whitewick (UTAG-YAMAHA) took 1 min 34 secs off Steve Walkings 6 year old course record to win the Circuit of the New Forest Time Trial. Whitewick, who placed 8th in last weeks National 10, produced a storming ride on a less than perfect day. A strong south westerly wind blew the riders out to Lymington and across Beaulieu Heath. However as they turned onto the A35 at Lyndhurst they felt the true strength of this cruel wind, that seems to have blown away May on the south coast. Of course the fast men never seem to suffer like the rest and Whitewick was scything his way through the field. His time of 1.11.15 was over two minutes quicker than second place Russell Kober (Hainault RC) with World age group triathlon Champion, James Gilfillan (Team feat) third with 1.15.20. Whitewicks teammate Julian Jenkinson was a non starter, having ridden and won the Manchester Wheelers 50 the previous afternoon with a 1.43.15

Julia Shaw (Drag2Zero.com) was off last in the 44 strong field, a nod of respect to the Commonwealth Games Bronze Medalist. Fresh from her gold medal winning ride in the National 10, Shaw was over a minute quicker than her time last year, 1.16.57 putting her in the top ten.

Stephen Whitewick, "I had my eye on Steve's course record, i took a couple of time checks and was going well so i knew it would be close. I was really pleased with my ride in the 10, i am doing every national championship, up to the 100, i struggle with the 100, not the physical side, i like to ride fast, i like the intensity of the shorter stuff, i like the feeling of nearly getting a heart attack i like that sort of buzz. With the 100 you sit there for 2 and half hours and wait for the fatigue to set in " I will also ride the Time Trial Champs and maybe next year the Rudy Project, i love those courses, technical, got to think about it a bit, some horrible dead junctions, it feels like you are actually riding your bike"

Julia Shaw: "I have done lots of tens,going into the National 10, it was quite a bit different today, i felt better than i thought i would, i am about 1.40 quicker than last year so i am quite happy with that really. I did go off too hard today but it felt really easy with the tail wind. I kept telling myself to slow down as i knew the last section was into a headwind. My legs were falling apart a bit on the last stretch"

• Will Stephenson (Bournemouth Arrow/Hotel Collingwood) won the South Division junior road race title after a 30 mile solo breakaway. Pretty impressive as there was a very strong wind blowing. Stephenson, enjoying a great season, won by over two minutes on the rolling 50 mile course over Stockbridge Down in Hampshire.

• Strong winds made the going tough in the Wessex Road Club 50 mile time trial, held at Lytchett Matravers Reigning national 12 hour champion, Julian Jenkinson (Utag-Yamaha) was victorious but his time of 1.49.47 was only 18 seconds ahead of Jon Wynn, 1.50.05, with Tom Alliban (Revo Racing) in third, 1.52.56. Terry Icke,66, (Poole Wheelers) rode strongly to claim 4th in 1.56.28. Icke is also enjoying a good season, and is planning to ride the World Masters Track Champioships, at Manchester later this year. Icke will target the 3,000 metre pursuit.

• Last years overall series winner, Jason Eastwood (Hargroves Cycles) sprinted to victory in round 2 of the Moreton Road Race series. A field of 66 lined up for what proved to be a fast race. The scratch group caught the handicap groups in front, with two of the ten 3 mile laps remaining. Eastwood proved unstoppable in the dash for the line. Roland Tilley (ridebike.co.uk) and Andrew Boyd (revo racing) took the minor places. Speaking about his plans for this season Eastwood said, "I am aiming to podium at the world masters track champs in September and also intend to do a bit of time trialling, as i have just bought a TT bike. I have just come back from racing in Holland which was great, so am hoping to do more out there and Belgium too. Also doing a couple of Crits in California in August, just for the experience"
(I dont have many details yet, but a crash in the finishing straight at Moreton, last night, Thursday 25 resulted in ambulance being called)

Paul Hopkins (Merida UK) was a clear winner of the Dorset Rough Riders MTB 2 hour Enduro. Held at Coldharbour, deep in the Wareham Forest, Hopkins led from the first lap. Working well with teammate Gregg Shrosbree, the pair built a healthy lead. However, Shrosbree suffered a punctured and by the time he rejoined the race, he was left salvaging pride. Hopkins pushed on alone and built a lead of over 5 minutes, and looked very comfortable on the mix of single track, fire trails and dusty gravel paths. Roland Tilley (ridebike.co.uk) & James Horton (Primera) chased hard but could make no impression. Tilley finally dropped Horton on the last lap to take second, the Primera rider hanging on for third. Liz Gilmour (ridebike) won the ladies race from Heidi Gould (CC Weymouth) with Carol Tilley third.

"I was getting ready for, and doing, my first 400 km audax from Shrewsbury to Holyhead and back …first time I've ridden through the night, which really was quite an experience – although I expect more enjoyable for being in a group than being on a TT - I can understand how you'd get into it ;-). Our main problem was the incredible storm that rolled around snowdownia for the whole afternoon and night, which made it more challenging than I'd expected."

• Poole-Based mountain biker, Sally Bigham (Topeak-Ergon) has just returned home after a hectic few weeks travelling and racing. A year’s sabbatical from her Bournemouth University job, has given her the time to concentrate on cycling, and the extra training time is starting to pay dividends. Bigham, with Karien Van Jaarsveld, recently won the Cape Epic stage race in South Africa and followed up that victory with second place at the Rocky Mountain Bike Marathon at Riva Del Garda, Italy. The 105 KM course included 3561 meters of climbing with lots of technical descents, made tricky after a few days rain. Sally loves this race and after missing out last year due to injury,was glad to be back. So glad in fact, she had been training in the Italian mountains the week before the event. Bigham was forced to give second best to the Finnish cyclist, Pia Sundstedt, who proved too strong on the long mountain climbs. Bigham’s time of 5hrs 7 was only 3 minutes behind the flying Finn.

She will now focus on the European and World Championships next month, “I am hoping to improve on my 7th & 8th placing’s last year. After that I will race the Trans Alp, an 8 day stage race in July. I will also be racing in other, big one day marathon events in Austria,Norway and France” Said Sally.

• Warming up for the National Championships in Hartelepool in two weeks’ time, Stephen Whitewick (Utag Yamaha) won the Hampshire RC 10 mile time trial. Recording a time of 20.21, Whitewick finished 21 seconds ahead of team mate and British Best All-Rounder, Julian Jenkinson. Terry Icke (Poole Wh), with 22.19 finished in 8th place. Whitewick will face stiffer competition at the National 10 Champs, with Olympic gold medalist Bradley Wiggins (Sky Pro Cycling) expected to take the title. Other locals in the mix were
J Thacker (vc st Raphael) 22.27, J Chapman (cc Weymouth) 23.10, N Spencer (BJW) 23.34, R Martin (Poole WH) 23.38, T Jeffries (NFCC) 24.49, Judith Martin (PW) 27.50. Claire Day (Born to Bike) won the Ladies race at the Ogmore Valley Wheelers 25. With a time of 1.01.19 on the R25 in Wales, Claire also finished ahead of husband Tim,1.02.48.

This years Moreton Village circuit series kicks off next Thursday, 12th May. Long time promoter, Pete Washington is standing down this year so the series is being run on a Co-Operative bases. All riders hoping to race will be expected to marshall at least one event in the 13 race series. Enough people have already volunteered to officiate at the first race. You can sign up to marshall on the date of your choice on the Series website; moretoncycleraces.org.uk. Racing is under The League International rules with a handicap format. The Moreton circuit is fast and flat with three corners that come round quickly, race distance is about 30 miles/1hr 10m. Entry is on the line with the first group off at 7pm.
Hugo Walters (NFCC) Picked up 4th in the U16s at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth last Saturday, Walters team mate John Heffernan & Steve Moss & Ellie Gilham (Bournemouth Arrow/Hotel Collingwod) were also racing.

• Rob Jeffries (Poole WH) consistently picks up results on the track, at the Bank Holiday meeting at Palmer Park Velodrome, Reading. Jeffries won the B sprint final and placed 2nd in the Derny Paced race. His team mate Gordon Skillen, however was not so lucky, a crash in the final race of the meeting saw Gordon T Bone a couple of riders. He left some skin on the track but was more concerned about his broken frame. Meanwhile, Alex Rowe (BJW) came off in a downhill MTB event and sustained a broken elbow, (did mine in a RR two years ago and i can tell you its very painful). Apparently Alex hit a tree!!

Weekly Round up 15/04/2011

• Daniel Lloyd (Garmin-Cervelo) has endured a rough ride at the start of his eighth season as a continental professional. Lloyd, who lives in Queens Park, had trained well over the winter and was looking forward to a good spring campaign. However, crashing on consecutive days in his first race, The Tour of Qatar, dented his morale and forced him off the bike for a few days. He was back in the saddle for the 8 day Paris-Nice race and rode himself into good form, earning selection for the one day classic, The Tour of Flanders. Unfortunately bad luck struck again and Lloyd crashed on a corner and was forced to retire from the race. Crashing is part of professional bike racing, so there will be no complaints from Daniel. Bad luck dogged the team at the Circuit de la Sarthe in France when thieves stole all of the days racing kit as it waited to be laundered. This weekend he is in Holland for the Amstel Gold race and will then be taking a short break, his wife, Lorraine is expecting there second son in Early May and Lloyd has been giving paternity leave.
• Will Stephenson (Bournemouth Arrow/Collingwood Hotel) also suffered bad luck in the junior tour of Bristol 2 day race. A crash halfway through Saturday’s flat road stage left Stephenson with a jammed chain, he chased for 10 miles but could not regain contact with the bunch. Will sat up and rode the last 35 miles on his own to try and save some energy for the following day, eventually losing some 11 minutes. Sunday’s stage included five 4km climbs and suited the Arrow rider much better as he stayed with the lead group and pulled back a lot of lost time. 11th on the stage and 32nd on overall GC “I would have been top 10 had I not crashed on the first day” said a rueful Stephenson. Richard Horton(Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers) also found the going tough, active on the first stage and away in two breaks, Horton did not have the legs when it mattered and Sunday proved a difficult day as he lost time on the hills and finished in 32nd place. Jordan Wade (Poole Wheelers) 59th, also struggled with the pace but gained some valuable experience.

• With Jubilee fast man Paul Jones, hoping for a float day at the ACME Wheelers 25 in Wales, this weekends EDCA 27KM Time Trial at Bere Regis looks to be a battle between Gary Dighton (Poole Wheelers) & Julian Thacker (VC st Raphael). Bryce Dyer (Vc ST Raphael) won on this course last year and cannot be counted out although by his own admission he does not like the hills, veteran Terry Icke (PW) is also expected to challenge. Race HQ is at Bere Regis Sports Club and start is at Gallows Hill, with the first rider off at 8.01am.

• Club time trials got underway this week; Bournemouth jubilee attracted 21 riders to Furzehill. With Nick Spencer winning in 24.49, Les Pick 25.12 and Luke Gray (Hargroves Cycles) 25.19. The New Forest cc had 43 sign on for the Ringwood –Sopley course Dan Ahearn (Cambridge Uni CC) 22.04, John Sibley (Utag-Yamaha) 22.55 and Gary Allen (GA Cycles) 23.08. Two up pairing Julian Jenkinson & Stephen Whitewick (Utag-Yamaha) clocked a speedy 21.02, to gain some revenge for their defeat to Ahearn the previous week. 23 entries for CC Weymouths 5, 1st Bryce Dyer (vc St Raphael) 9.46,Julian Thacker 10.28 & John Chapman (cc Weymouth)10.28.
