Bournemouth Arrow/Raymond Brown Track League 5: Report,Results,Comment

Poole Wheelers Junior, Harrison Fielding continues to dominate the Tuesday night track league in Bournemouth. Having been promoted from  group B Fielding is virtually unbeatable in the group A races and leads the league overall after this latest round. Victo

ries in the 8 & 16 lap scratch races and the elimination race were almost a formality. Will Stephenson (Primera/Specialized) provides competition and takes the initiative but ultimately lacks the power & pure speed, either to come round or hold off. With 60 miles in the legs and an uphill finish, the result might be different.

Andy Buddle (Poole Wh) got the better of Fielding in the final event of the evening, the 40 lap scratch race. The Poole pair and Stephenson stole a lap on the bunch early doors. They kept the pace high and the bunch splintered under the constant pressure, the Commissaires were working hard to keep tabs as riders were spread all over the track. The head of the race was never in doubt and the leading three were clear again as they took the bell. Buddle has been riding well and wanted this one, Stephenson sat up and for once, Fielding had no answer.

The B group is less clear cut, Barry Watkinson (Bournemouth Arrow) and Jason Falconer (PM) shared the  spoils with Ellie Gilham. Gilham leads the ladies, there is little competition but that is not her fault.

Two invitation Kierin races added some extra excitement to the proceedings. Barry Watkinson won the first after Alan McRae had been forced to bump start the temperamental Derny bike. Fielding, of course, took the second Kierin.
A concern for the Bournemouth Arrow and the Bournemouth Cycling Centre are the low numbers. A disappointing field of only 20 riders rode round 5, the racing is keen but predictable. The weather was perfect and there is no shortage of riders turning out for practice sessions, so why are there so few racing? (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers club 10 on the same evening attracted 40 riders). The Bournemouth track is a fantastic facility; the track league is well run with plenty of officials and willing volunteers. What it needs is riders!

A warm evening and the benefits of weekly track racing were all there for spectators to enjoy at this week’s Raymond Brown Track League. With the best and closest racing yet in this the League’s first year, progress in rider’s race sharpness and use of tactics were particularly visible in the B Group where Jason Falconer, Bournemouth Arrow, and Ellie Gilham, VC St Raphael, used their heads as well as their legs to make intelligent race moves to good effect, both securing their first wins at this level.
“Kierin” was the watchword for the night as first it was the invitation Keirin Events which gave the opportunity for both A and B riders to test out the feel of another Olympic discipline. This was followed up with a Keirin style 10 lap 34 mph derny paced leadout to get the A Group rider’s legs buzzing as they launched straight into their traditional Elimination Race.
The previously competitive Will Stephenson, Primera, absent through exams in recent weeks, looked strong but was not sharp enough to overcome Harrison Fielding or Andy Buddle both Poole Wheelers. Fielding was dominant through till the finale 40 lap Scratch as, true to form, these 3 succeeded in lapping the field, then going straight through the remains of the decimated bunch to try it all over again. In the brutal run in to the line however, it was Buddle who proved clearly to be the strongest of the strong, leaving Fielding and Stephenson to scrap it out for the minor placings.
The structure of Graham Hurst’s excellent Youth events again proved how seemingly “novelty” events can be used to stimulate and challenge young riders, this week’s handicap team sprint proving the point!
The League organiser confirms that races will take place next Tuesday on the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with the number 60 forming an integral part of the main event. Riders will be pleased to hear the number will be associated with the value of the main event’s prizes, not the race distance.

Wednesday Night Track Sessions

Wednesday night Track Cycling
Starting 18th April - 18.30pm


Run by the Bournemouth Arrow’s Coaching Team, these sessions at the Bournemouth Cycling Centre are open to all riders with some track experience and are pitched at the “Intermediate” rider level.
By that we mean all those riders who have achieved at least Accreditation Stage 2 in 2011, and are looking for a well structured fun session to further progress their skills and hone their fitness, but do not want the cut and thrust of full on Competition Training.
Those riders with Rider Accreditation from 2011 can revalidate for the new summer season when they arrive.
Sessions start time at 18.30 pm sharp so please arrive in sufficient time for signing on, hiring a bike etc etc.
Session fee is £8.00, cash only please.

Bournemouth Arrow Good Friday 10

Julian Jenkinson (Contre la Montre) surprised himself by winning the Bournemouth Arrow Good Friday 10. Never a fan of the shorter distances, the former BBAR still recorded 21.08 on the Bulbury-Upton course in Dorset.

Another former winner of the British Best All Rounder competition, Gary Dighton (Poole Wheelers), finished 16 seconds down on Jenkinson. Dighton’s team mate, Andy Buddle is in good form, claiming third place WITH 21.33 in a competitive field. Sixty eight year old, Terry Icke backed up Dighton & Buddle to give Poole Wheelers the team award.

A sharp frost made it “chilly” for the early starters but the bright sunshine and calm conditions produced a few “PBs”. Claire Day (Born to Bike) started her season with a win, her 24041 giving her the ladies prize. Julian Thacker (VC ST Raphael) was one of a couple of riders who lost time when the emergency traffic lights turned red to give a fire engine access at Holes Bay. Poole Wheelers junior, Harrison Fielding was looking strong but suffered an asthma attack and was forced to pack.

Lytchett Matravers Village Hall, High Street. From A35 take exit signposted Lytchett Matravers, Wareham Road. At the top of the junction turn left by the Rose & Crown and the Village Hall is about 50 metres on the left. Numbers at Village Hall NOT at start.
Instructions To Start and Finish
To get to the start, turn right out of HQ car park and first right by the Rose & Crown Pub, before you get to the bottom of the hill you need to take the right fork half way down the hill, Halls Road. Allow sufficient time to get to the start. Its all down hill to the start, the down side is you will need to ride up it after the finish!!
After finish continue on towards start and turn right into Bulbury Lane (Halls Road),
No U turns on A35. Any rider observed riding in a manner which may jeopardise his or her own safety, the safety of others and the future of the sport will be disqualified
and reported to CTT.

Safety Notes
In the interests of your own safety, Cycling Time Trials and the event promoters strongly advise you to wear a HARD SHELL HELMET that meets an internationally accepted safety standard. CTT regulations require all competitors under the age of 18 years to wear a hard shell helmet.
Observers will be in attendance along the course
Please allow time to check the course or at least read the instructions below. Don’t expect vehicles to guess your movements when moving from the left to the right lane whilst approaching the Holes Bay and Bakers Arms Roundabouts

Bournemouth Arrow announce link with Winton College

The Bournemouth Arrow is proud to announce that it is linking with Winton Arts and Media College to provide the Club with an operating base in the heart of the town.
In addition to providing rooms for Club Meetings the College will house, in a special facility adjacent to the Sports Hall, the Arrow’s fleet of 6 Wattbikes in a state of the art Centre of Excellence. This facility, complete with showers and changing rooms, will be available for use by Students and Arrow members.

The Arrow’s Development Officer Alan McRae says:
“This is a fantastic opportunity for the Club to be based right next to the new outdoor track and to provide members with meeting rooms and a training centre virtually 12 months a year. Available 5 nights a week, it links perfectly with the Club Nights on Fridays at the Bournemouth Cycling Centre. A feature of these sessions is the 5.30pm Junior Development Programme providing the next step into the sport for School Students. This links with the Club Session at 6.30pm providing all members with a wet weather training option to track training, all under the supervision of our own coaches.

Club Nights start at the track on 20th April and we plan for the Centre of Excellence to be operational by then. After years in the development, our members can now fine tune their fitness through the season using the track or the Wattbikes at no cost other than Club membership”.

Such is the growth in popularity of cycling in schools, in addition to its own students, Winton College plan to use the facility, it’s own trained staff and fleet of bikes as a Cycling Centre available to other schools’ for their term time cycling activities.

Watt Bikes for Bournemouth Arrow

The Bournemouth Arrow is proud to announce that £10,000 Sport England funding has been secured towards the costs of 6 Wattbikes to be available for free use by its members.
Wattbikes are already widely in use by all levels of cyclists to improve their fitness. With a team of 7 qualified Arrow coaches already in place, this provides the opportunity for Arrow members in groups or individually to train using state of the art technology.
Wattbike say:
“The Wattbike was created with British Cycling to provide an affordable indoor bike for training and testing that is suitable for everyone from school children to Olympic Gold Medallists. Within seconds you can be accurately measuring your power output, your pedalling technique and heart rate. The Wattbike Performance Computer is designed to be simple and intuitive to use. It records 39 parameters 100 times per second, but displays only the key information for the cyclist through seven different views. The rider has the option of viewing their data in Power (Watts), Energy (Joules), Speed (km/h) and Pace (time per km).”

BH Track Cycling Championships 2012

Bournemouth Arrow Cycling Club and Raymond Brown proudly announce the

An opportunity for local riders to test their abilities over the Olympic events for:

A week after the Olympic Games the opportunity exists for riders and clubs in the BH postcode region to emulate the stars. There will be qualifying events in July, all leading up to the Finals Nights at the Bournemouth Cycling Centre in August.

We are particularly looking forward to Club Teams recruiting their BH members who, in the name of their Club or Team, can pitch for bragging rights as

Now is the time for riders to start their preparation for what will be the fastest and most exciting cycle racing ever to take place in Bournemouth.

The intervening 6 months offer plenty of time for riders to get accredited to ride the track, join the weekly Track League to fully familiarise themselves with the extra speed of track competition and, together with team mates, book the track and run your own training sessions to hone that extra speed and technique.

At the recent AGM, the Club’s plans for this Olympic year were agreed. The Club now has 7 qualified coaches and one of our aims is to make the fullest use of that valuable resource for our members.
This year sees the Club make a dramatic step up in race and event organisation through the summer. Top of the “new promotions” list is the weekly Track Cycling League to run over 19 weeks every Tuesday from April at the Bournemouth Cycling Centre.
This will be complemented by Wednesday evening Intermediate Track Sessions at Bournemouth Cycling Centre open to all local accredited riders who are looking for a challenging track session. Each session will be pitched at a level just below full competition, and provide an opportunity for skills and fitness progressive development for all local riders who have already achieved basic track competence.
Thursdays will see the traditional Club 10 mile TTs at Ringwood which have proved so popular over the years.

Finally Friday sees the Club Track night, open to members only, where specific skills and fitness will be developed including Derny sessions for that vital top end work. In a development from its traditional Go Ride Cycling Skills sessions for kids, the first hour of the Club Track Night will be focussed on Junior Development for young riders over the age of 11.

The Arrow’s Club Development Officer Alan McRae says,”This Programme covering 4 activities every week in the summer, 3 of which are open to other cyclists, is a massive undertaking by the Club. We recognise that running the Track League will not be possible without practical assistance of members from other cycling clubs for which we are very grateful. For the rest, it is our own coaches and officials who will make this exciting Programme possible. If there has ever been a time to provide such a boost to our own members and the rest of the local cycling community, then 2012 is surely it.”
