Ken Buckley (Spokes BPC Racing) 4.03, wins the 2.4 mile Prologue ahead of Oscar Hutchings (VC Equipe-Flix, 4.08 and Matthew Downie Downie (Primera-Teamjobs) & Martin Rowlandn (UK Biking B,mth Cyclworks/Trek), 4.09. Downie storms back, irresistibly winning the short, 52km Handicap road stage, by 17 seconds from Red Walters & Rowland, to lead the race by 11 seconds ahead of Sundays, deciding 24km individual time trial.

British Cycling Announces European Track Squad

British Cycling has today announced the team of 18 riders who will represent the Great Britain Cycling Team at the forthcoming UEC European Track Championships taking place in Berlin, Germany, from 18 – 22 October 2017.

Five Olympic gold medalists will compete in the event, including Katie Archibald - the reigning European champion in the Omnium and individual pursuit. Elinor Barker, who won gold with Archibald in the team pursuit in Rio 2016, will line up for Great Britain as will Steven Burke, Phil Hindes and Callum Skinner.

Joining Archibald and Barker in the women’s endurance squad are Eleanor Dickinson, Emily Kay and Manon Lloyd, all of whom won gold medals at the UCI Track World Cup round in Glasgow last year.

Kian Emadi, Chris Latham, Andy Tennant, Mark Stewart and Ollie Wood join Steven Burke in the men’s endurance squad, with the latter two returning to the track having represented Great Britain at the UCI Road World Championships in Bergen last month where Wood finished fourth in the under 23 men’s event.

Current under-23 European team sprint champions Jack Carlin, Ryan Owens and Joe Truman will compete in the men’s sprint events with Hindes and Skinner, while Olympic bronze medalist Katy Marchant will be joined by senior academy rider Sophie Capewell, who makes her debut appearance at elite level in these championships.

British Cycling’s head coach Iain Dyer said: “We’ve selected a strong squad for the UEC European Track Championships with the aim of starting the season with some good performances.

“All the riders have had a good block of training and racing over the summer months, either on the track or on the road, with some promising signs of progression and consistent results.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the level of progression shown in training replicated under major competition conditions across the squad in what marks the beginning of the 2017/18 season for the track team.”

Reigning two-time European champion Katie Archibald said: “I won three medals in individual events at the European championships in Paris last year, and this gave me confidence going into the World Cups having focused all my previous training efforts on the team pursuit. I’m pleased with my results overall from the past year and aim to continue my form into the new season.
“I have enjoyed some good results at races around Europe over recent months, including winning four out of the five events I entered at the Dudenhofen GP. I’ve now returned to training with the Great Britain Cycling Team and I am looking forward to the track season ahead.”

THE GOODWOOD CLASSIC - COURSE DETAILS
COURSE P911 DISTANCE 27 MILES

START At the entrance to The Valdoe, approximately 250 yards north of Woodcote RAB on Kennel Hill (GR SU881078).

PROCEED north past the Golf Club and climb Kennel Hill to Charlton Down where take RIGHT fork to descend Knights Hill to Charlton. Turn LEFT at village crossroads to Singleton where bear right keeping to the main street to the T junction with the A286. Turn LEFT on to A286 and proceed south to take second LEFT to climb Town Lane Hill (Singleton Shoot) to Charlton Down. (GR SU880113).

COMMENCE the descent of Kennel Hill and then turn sharp LEFT to proceed east to the GOODWOOD PRIME opposite the plaque to commemorate the 1982 Worlds Cycling Championships (GR SU884108).

CONTINUE east after the Prime past Goodwood Race Course through Pilleygreen Lodges Crossroads and Selhurst Park to Benges (GR SU939120). Turn LEFT on to A285 and descend Upwaltham Hill. Turn sharp LEFT at the bottom of Upwaltham Hill into Droke Lane and proceed to East Dean (GR SU903128). Turn LEFT at village pond in East Dean and climb East Dean Hill to Pilleygreen Lodges Crossroads. Straight across and descend New Barn Hill to Waterbeach and Westerton Crossroads. Turn LEFT and proceed along New Road (Lavant Straight) to junction with A285 (GR SU900075). Turn LEFT on to A285 and proceed through Halnaker to climb Benges Hill (GR SU939120). Turn LEFT and proceed through Selhurst Park and Pilleygreen Lodges Crossroads to the T junction with Kennel Hill at Goodwood Race Course. Turn LEFT to descend Kennel Hill past the Golf Club to

The Velodrome at Calshot, Hampshire is the second smallest in the world at only 142 m (466 ft.) and the steep banking is custom designed to fit inside the former RAF aircraft hangar. Forest City Velodrome in London, Ontario, Canada, is the world's shortest at 138 m (453 ft.). Built to fit a hockey arena, it too has steep banking.

Island Life, Just Another Weekend for Guernsey Velo!

Sam Culverwell has had a good week! Two successful trips to Dorset has seen the 16 year old Channel Islander bag a brace of impressive victories on the mainland. A mountain biker for the last five years, riding the National series, ranked 2nd in Youth A, now a Junior, Culverwell is concentrating on the road. Representing Guernsey at the Youth Commonwealth Games in the Bahamas, the Island Games in Gotland, Sweden, a 2nd Cat licence, never mind good week, its been a good year!

"His future is doing everything!" Says stepdad,soigneur & all round fixer for the Guernsey Velo Club, Gary Wallbridge.

Dad does everything but coach his talented youngster, someone else does that and Wallbridge is not telling who:

"My role is to get him to where he needs to be and make sure he has got what he needs" Its no problem, he is motivated, absolutely perfect, if we had another six like him we really would have a terrific squad."

Living on Guernsey simply getting to a race is a costly, logistical challenge.

"Logistics is everything, if we all lived in Poole we would all be better riders but the fact is we have got to get to Poole first. We have plenty of racing on Guernsey, what we dont have is the mix of field we get by coming to the mainland, we dont get the points, its club racing at home, a good standard but its club racing, to get British Cycling points we have to come to the UK. We came over Saturday, the lads are flying back to get back for school and i will travel back on Monday, normally we come across for the full weekend."

It was an easier trip for Wallbridge this weekend with just two academy riders, Culverwell & Sam Reed, who finished 6th, to worry about.

" Sam (Reed) is part of our academy riders, we have a group of juniors, the plan next year is to bring a bigger group away on a more regular basis, mostly second year juniors. We have four very good sponsors, Ian Brown Cycles, Ravenscroft, Watts & Co and Praxis, they support the academy, without them we could not travel, this could not happen. Sam has done thirteen trips this year,including the Island games in Gotland, Sweden and Bahamas, a quiet year for him. We will bring more junior riders next year and i will accompany the seniors as well, we are going to get them off Island as a road squad as much as we can, if we can get five or six lads away on a number of weekends and if we pick the right races......."

Driving, Pinning numbers, passing up bottles, pumping tyres,organising, the list goes on. Its a lot of work for Wallbridge, he wont get home to St Peter Port till Monday afternoon, a solitary night at the Poole travelodge is no fun but there are no complaints and the enthusiasm is clear. And there are a few compensations, 16 year old Culverwell won the weight of his bike in beer at the Sixpenny Brewery race, somebody has to drink it........

Culverwell takes a break now before starting his winter programme. His 2018 season will kick off in Bath in February at the winter crit series then some more mountain bike racing. The first big target will be qualification for the island games, representing Guernsey in Gibralter 2019

1.00pm- Prologue (2.4 km )

START at Downton Leisure Centre, Wick Lane, Downton. Proceed up Wick Lane to FINISH at top of Whitsbury.

2.45pm- Handicap Road Race 52km

START at lay-by on Lode Hill, Downton. Proceed up Lode Hill on the B3080 through Woodfalls, bear left via Hale into Forest Road to join the B3078 at Bramshaw Telegraph (M).Continue on B3078 to junction with B3079 at Brook Turn Left (M) through Bramshaw, continue through to turn left at Landford Village Hall (M) into Hamptworth Road. Stay on this road to Bowers Hill at Redlynch (M) turning left to complete Lap One. Continue on second lap as before, till approx. two miles past Hamptworth Golf Course.Turn Left (M) into Vicarage Road, Lover and continue left(M) at Redlynch Village Hall into School Road to bear into Whiteshoot passing Lover Sign to FINISH on climb 300 metres short of junction with B3080 at Woodfalls.

Tornado CRT Sporting 10, Report/Results

James Boyman (Hops Velo) makes it a weekend double winning the Tornado CRT 10,just 15 hours after victory in the Utag 10, report from Martin Howes.....
With the forecast torrential rain and 25mph winds failing to materialise, 28 riders took the start of the Tornado RCC Open 10. Part of the South district Sporting time trial series a bag full of points were on offer for a late charge up the leader board before seasons end.

This event was sponsored by Sunday Club Clothing who provided the cash prizes for all categories.

Set around Bransgore on quite back roads into the New Forest, heavy rain the night before had left roads wet and the chances of punctures high. Michelle Walter the most unfortunate, puncturing on the way to the start. A dash back to HQ, bit of help from Estrella bikes and she was ready to go again.

James Boyman of Hoops Velo took overall honours with a time of 22.05. A margin of 1m 50s ahead of 2nd place assured victory and annihilated the course record in the process.

The other podium spots however were far closer, only 14 seconds between 2nd and 4th.

Craig Wallington (Sarum Velo), winner of the first open back in April took 2nd, and Max Webber (Abbotts Ann Cycles) 3rd.

Lizzie Campbell (Iris Race Team) was winner of the womens competition with a time of 28.32. Sarah Wise (Weymouth CC) 2nd, and Michelle Lock (GS Stella) 3rd.

The team competition was once again won by NFCC. Two in a row for them at this event.

Young Zak Snell (Tornado RCC) was quickest junior. Setting a time of 25.58 on a standard road bike.

Dave Dent went home winner of the Vets award with a time of 24.46, 2 minutes 38 under standard and good enough for 6th place on the day.

Culverwell's Dorset Double! Sixpenny Brewery Road Race, Report/Results

Sam Culverwell (Guernsey VC) made it two wins in 7 days on Dorset roads, winning the Sixpenny Brewery Race at Pimperne,a week after victory in the Jurassic Coast race at Wool. The 16 year old pulled clear on the final climb of Stubhampton Hill to win the 56 mile,3/4th category race ahead of 21 year old triathlete, Joe Arundel (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers).

Dependable mountain biker Kim Little (Merida Factory Racing) made the podium, edging out John Samways (Bouremouth Jubilee Wheelers) after 4, 12 mile laps had failed to set the race alight.

A group of 12 went clear on the first lap, the climb up from Pimperne providing the opportunity to stretch out the bunch. Through Tarrant Hinton and the gap was growing but the turn onto the C13 above Stubhamton took the break into the wind and the move was snuffed out Blandford.

The course did damage at the back of the race but at the front the strongest were content to roll through. Culverwell & Arundel went clear on the bell lap but once again the rising wind played into the hands of the chase.

Tony Revell (Off Camber) briefly had daylight on the bunch but could not deny Culverwells double.

Sam Culverwell "The race stayed together a lot, i pushed on up the climb just to try and break it up but the headwind over the top you just could never get way. We got a gap at the bell, we were working well but i was trying to save some to attack again, you have to try and think ahead. I went with just under a K to go, i thought had gone too early, i was grinding to a halt at the line"

Elliott & Boyman Pay Tribute at Julian Jenkinson Memorial 10! Report, Results

James Boyman (Hoops Velo) & Rachael Elliott (DRAG2ZERO) came out on top in the re-scheduled Utag, Julian Jenkinson memorial 10 at Liphook on Saturday afternoon. Boyman clocked 18:34 on the dragstrip, P881R A3 course for a 34 second winning margin over Liam Maybank (Twickenham CC).
Sam Wadsley (Poole Wheelers) & Matthew Downie (Primera-Teamjobs) tied for third place, both stopping the clock on 19:10.

Rachael Elliott recorded a course best on her way to winning the womens race, her 20:26, 16 seconds better than teammate and new 12 Hour champion, Alice Lethbridge. The two DRAG2ZERO riders were in a class of their own with Kirsty McSeveny (Fareham Wheelers), 23:07, a distant third. Wadsley, backed up by impressive 15 year old Tom Day, 20:20 & dad, Chris Day, 22:07, riding on a borrowed bike,led Poole wheelers to the team award with a combined 1:01:37. The threatened rain never fell but a blustery headwind on the outward leg to Princes Bridge ensured it was not the fastest day at the end of a long season. Time trial champion, Julia Shaw & long time friend of Julian, Steve Whitewick, presented the prizes making it a fitting tribute to the former British Best All-Rounder who passed away last year age just 50.

Rachael Elliott "Alice (Lethbridge) is going really well so i did not expect to beat her, its touch and go, you win some, you lose some, she rode the Leith hill climb in Surrey this morning. It was the same for everyone today, a hell of a headwind out but if you tuck into the hedge it was ok i often spin out on the way back but i did'nt today so it was not a true tailwind. Julian rode the Newbury road club 12 hour which i organised, i remember him asking me lots of questions about the event, he was a superb rider, it is so sad"

James Boyman " It did not feel too hard on the way out but i was 20 seconds slower than a couple of weeks ago. I got slowed up at Ham Barn roundabout but i imagine everybody did, it was pretty busy. I remember Julian when i was a junior, he rode the Race Across America, he came back and was destroying everybody, riding club 10s. He used to have a strap tied to the tail of his aero helmet that went round his waist, i remember that"

Keigthtley Fastest at Revo RT 10

Lewis Keightley took his 9th Open win of the season at the Revo Racing 10 mile event at Okehampton, Devon. The Corfe Mullen rider will now turn his attention to a few local hill climbs before taking a break. Keightley will be racing for Primera-Teamjobs in 2018.
