Bournemouth & Dist Women's CA Two-Up & Tandem 10, Report/Results

Husband and wife Pairing, Louisa & Andy Cooper (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers) won the annual Ladies Two-Up on the P311 Ringwood-Sopley course on a hot and breezy afternoon.

The Coopers looked fluid and fast as they raced clear of the field putting 1 minute 21 seconds into Lili MaClean & Mitch Webber with Michelle Walters & Paul Jones a further 5 seconds back in third place.

In the Tandem Event, Erica Fogg & Stephen Whitewick were clear winners despite finishing on a softening tyre, a rear wheel slow puncture doing little to slow them up. Ray Hughes sufferd a hornet bite on the knee before the start but bravely soldiered on, piloting Mary Corbett to second place.

Like all "fun events" things are taken very seriously, post-race talk at the HQ revolved around aerodynamic skinsuits, go-faster strips, warm up strategies & finding a new partner for next year. Race organiser Claire Newman always books good weather for this event, the outside headquarters complete with toilet tent demand it. When the talking was done, Claire and her team retired to the Elm Tree Inn to catch the end of the Olympic Road Race on TV along with some liquid refreshment of course.

Jolliffe,Calvert,Raybould & Fielding, all in the Medals at Youth & Junior Track Nationals

Youth and Junior Track Nationals Derby Velodrome. August 1st-5th 2016

Alex Jolliffe, Alistair Fielding, Charley Calvert & recently crowned world junior champion were all in the medals at the National Youth & Junior Track Championships this week. Jolliffe won gold in the junior sprint & the Keirin while Alistair Fielding won the Youth A 500 m time trial in 33.886 secs, after taking silver in the match sprint. Bournemouth Arrow Charley Calvert won gold in the U16 Scratch race and picked up silver in the 2km U16 Individual pursuit after qualifying in first place. Rebecca Raybould added another silver in the junior womens pursuit

National 10 Mile Time Trial Championship, 21/08/16, Start List

Course: P886 Rake, Hampshire, Start on the lay-by (25 yards before the exit) on the london road b2070 facing towards Petersfield (south) 100 yards from the “Black Fox” public house and the turning to (north) Milland Hill. proceed south along b2070 passing the junction opposite the “flying bull” ph (1.7 miles) and continue to hill brow (3.1 miles). continue south on the b2070 and pass the junction (care) with a272 (4.9 miles) until the rams hill roundabout at sheet (5.17 miles). where turn, taking the third exit to retrace the outward route re-passing the a272 junction at 6.4 miles and hill brow at 8.1 miles. continue along the b2070 passing the “Rake” sign at 9 miles to finish at a point just before the turning of an unclassified road to chapel common opposite Coldharbour wood approximately 100 yards from the start of the dual carriageway, 10 miles.

...a3crg Two-Up & Club 10, Summer Series,03/08/16,Results

The Greatham Summer Series came to a close on Wednesday evening when ...a3crg promoted an "Open" Mixte 2-up ttt and a club event on the P881 Ham Barn Course at Greatham.

In the Open 2-up team time trial the Newbury Road Club pairing of Rachael Elliott & Ian Greenstreet repeated their 2015 win by beating the ...a3crg duo of Laura Bartlett & Stephen Williamson by 6 seconds. In third place were Kate Allan and Edward Nunn just 30 seconds off the winning time and a further 7 seconds back was the youngest team in the competition The VC Venta duo of Ashia Fenwick & Jamie Franklin. These four teams were all sub 21 on a windy evening, quite remarkable rides, just how the guys kept up we don't know, but all the teams were still talking to one another after the event!

In the club event Andy Langdown once again won but found the combination of the wind and tired legs meant that there was no "19" to be had on the evening, it was a "slow night". Oliver Hayward (University of Birmingham CC) had his first try on the course and was just 8 seconds back from Andy with the much improved Jon Hughes in 3rd place.

Also new to the course was Patryk Witkowski (Bournemouth Jubilee) in 14th place, while a trio of Poole Wheelers probably felt at home with the wind!

The evening concluded with Paddy Brennan presenting the Greatham League Trophies to the winners of the three divisions. The Prima League was won by Andy Langdown (Blazing Saddles) with Peter Younghusband (Petersfield Tri) in 2nd place and Andy Tedd (...a3crg) in 3rd. The "Squadra League" was won by Michael Garner (..a3crg) and the " il Gruppetto League by Bob Oliver of Fareham Wheelers.
Next Wednesday (10th August) ...a3crg conclude their Summer TT's by running a "10" on the underused P883 at Buriton. Some say . . . . . it is the fastest of the three courses, but all we know, it is down to the weather, the drawback to using the course has been securing a HQ for the evening. For this event it will be Buriton Village Hall (parking is cramped), rider limit is just 70 riders and will be started slowest-2-fastest, signing opens at 17:45, first rider at 19:01.

"A strong wind"

Bournemouth Jubilee 50 Cancelled!

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers have cancelled their Open 50 mile time trial scheduled for Sunday 14th August. A late addition to the racing calendar, the BJW 50 had received just 21 entries by the closing date of Tuesday 2nd August. Requiring over half that number to marshal and run the event the Jubilee decided to pull the plug. The demise of the BJW 50 continues the growing trend away from long distance time trialling. A quick look through the 1996 RTTC handbook shows ten 50's listed in the "P" South District, contrast that with just four 20 years later in 2016 (3 after the BJW cancellation) .
Nothing new there of course, long distance events have been in decline since before 1996 for a variety of reasons, not least, simply the loss of courses due to changing traffic conditions. Club events are also suffering, particularly in the south west of the region, with the Poole Wheelers routinely cancelling their Wednesday night races and CC Weymouth, Bournemouth Arrow & Bournemouth Jubilee struggling to attract more than a dozen or so to their midweek events. Apathy or geography? Further east & north the entries are better, the Andover Wheelers and the New Forest CC regularly get 30 plus fields, a wider catchment area no doubt swelling the numbers. Even further East, ...a3crg are turning people away from their Wednesday night events, the 80 strong fields include riders from all over the district, no apathy here, the reason....speed. These days riders want fast, dual carriageway courses and if they can be back at the HQ in 20 minutes, even better.
