Fielding on Fire

Harrison Fielding (Poole Wheelers) was undeterred after an asthma attack forced him to abandon the Bournemouth Arrow 10 mile time trial. The youngster dashed across to Castle Coombe and took first place in the Easter Classic. It was Fielding’s third win on the road this season He won the first round of the Ray Martin Memorial league at Portsmouth on Wednesday evening after winning at Thruxton the previous week. Fielding explained “My doctor says the virus I had in the winter has aggravated my childhood asthma, so I have two inhalers now. I shot over to Castle Coombe after the time trial, its my third road race win this year, hopefully there is plenty more to come”

Gary Dighton (Poole Wheelers) continued his run of good form with victory in the EDCA 24 mile Time Trial. The Wareham –based rider recorded 54.17 on the sporting Badbury Rings circuit for a winning margin of 42 seconds.

Simon Berogna (VC ST Raphael/Waites Contracts) took 2nd spot with 54.59. Dave Pickering (BJW) is also enjoying a good start to the season his time of 55.25 giving him third place. The visiting Wightlink/Offshore trio of Dave Dent, Sean Williams & Martin Piper took the team award.
Bournemouth Cycling Centres “Kids on the Track” initiative has proved a great success. The Saturday morning sessions for 8-14 year olds proved very popular and more are scheduled for later in the year. Coach Richard Eastham is planning four separate series of five sessions each. Cost is £5 per rider with the sessions running for two hours. Eastham says “There is no need to book in advance kids can pay on the gate and ride. We are looking forward to seeing more new faces throughout this 2012 Olympic year”.
CC Weymouth has put up a prize of £199 to anyone who beats the course record at their Easter Saturday 10 mile time trial. Matt Illingworth set the current record of 20.17 for the Warmwell course in the National championship event in 1999. Poole –based Adam Topham (High Wycombe cc) came within 5 seconds of the record in a recent club event but has not entered the open race. The first rider is off at 2.30pm and there is a total prize fund of £359

Bob Jolliffe (New Forest CC )reports........NEW Forest Cycling Club champ John Heffernan overcame mechanical problems and stormed to second place in a 120-rider road race in Sussex on Sunday (APRIL 1).John collected 13 points in the 50-54 age group in the first race in the League of Veteran Racing Cyclists’ MStina (CORRECT) Jersey series at Ellens Green, Horsham.Problems arose halfway into the 55-mile race when his rear gear jammed on the 12 tooth sprocket, leaving him with a choice of riding on high gears in just the 53- or 39-tooth chainrings. “Fortunately 39x12 was the perfect gear for the final uphill sprint and the lack of gears meant I wasn’t tempted to try my usual heroics on the last couple of laps,” he said.“I just held my position near the front, let the others burn themselves out and when a gap opened with about 150m to go I jumped. “The winner was already three bike lengths clear by that stage but it was nice to time the sprint right for a change so that I was still taking places in the final 50m.“I always thought that having 20 gears was overrated!”First place went to Paul Caton of Anders TMG Horizon RT and third was Graham Hindle of GS Henley. The event was organised for the LVRC by South Western Road Club.Two riders good . . .Closer to home, GA Cycles’ Gary Allen and Simon Barnes were the fastest pair in New Forest CC’s two-up 10-mile team time trial on the Lyndhurst/Ley Green/Ipley Cross loop. Bournemouth Arrow Good Friday 10

Julian Jenkinson (Contre la Montre) surprised himself by winning the Bournemouth Arrow Good Friday 10. Never a fan of the shorter distances, the former BBAR still recorded 21.08 on the Bulbury-Upton course in Dorset.

Another former winner of the British Best All Rounder competition, Gary Dighton (Poole Wheelers), finished 16 seconds down on Jenkinson. Dighton’s team mate, Andy Buddle is in good form, claiming third place WITH 21.33 in a competitive field. Sixty eight year old, Terry Icke backed up Dighton & Buddle to give Poole Wheelers the team award.

A sharp frost made it “chilly” for the early starters but the bright sunshine and calm conditions produced a few “PBs”. Claire Day (Born to Bike) started her season with a win, her 24041 giving her the ladies prize. Julian Thacker (VC ST Raphael) was one of a couple of riders who lost time when the emergency traffic lights turned red to give a fire engine access at Holes Bay. Poole Wheelers junior, Harrison Fielding was looking strong but suffered an asthma attack and was forced to pack.

Raymond Brown Track League

Two weeks to go !
The Raymond Brown Track League starts in 2 weeks and you can do things now to ensure things go smoothly for you on the night.
Please be aware we are adopting a "Ryanair" approach to signing on !! We are fighting daylight so it is essential that we start racing on time ie 07.00pm. Entry to the track centre for latecomers will be restricted to brief slots between events so please move heaven and earth to give yourself sufficient time to get through Admin, set up in the Track Centre and warm up on rolers/turbo.

So now you can;
1. Prior to your arrival go to the BCC website, download and complete any BCC Competition Licence and League Entry Form you require
2. You will also find the Track League Entry Form on the Bournemouth Arrow website in the "3 weeks to go" article.
2. Start saving and bring enough CASH with you on the night to minimise your time at the desks, we will not be accepting cheques.
3. Plan your logistics to arrive as early as possible, go straight to the Admin office at the Pavilion first, the BCC Competition Licence desk first, then Signing on. Only then go back to the car to unload.
Things will get easier as the weeks go by but the "Start at 07.00pm" will not change, you will just get more races as the daylight improves!!

Kids on the Track

The “Kids on the Track” sessions at the Bournemouth Cycling Centre velodrome have proved a great success. Coach Richard Eastham has this to say: “On behalf of the coaching team of Graham, Jason, Gordon and myself, we consider it has been a great success. So much so, that we are going to carry on after Easter. We have booked four separate series of five sessions each, with dates as set out below.

PLEASE NOTE: We have a new Saturday start time of 11h00 – this is to allow some adult coaching sessions to take place between 09h00 and 11h00. It’s going to be a busy year! We have kept the fee at £5 per rider. No need to book in advance, just £5 on the gate. Kids can ride all, or just some sessions, in each series. Please ensure I have a mobile contact number. In case of wet weather, we will make a cancellation by text message no later than 90 mins before the session is due to start. Once again, thanks for your support and we look forward to running more sessions and seeing more new faces throughout this 2012 Olympic year. (07816 299 909).

There is a series of traffic-free cycle coaching
sessions in 2012 at the Bournemouth Cycling
Centre. Sessions last two hours and cost £5 per
rider and are for children aged between 8 and
14 years old of all abilities.
The session leaders will be Richard Eastham,
Jason Falconer, Graham Hurst and Gordon
Skillen. All are qualified and accredited British
Cycling coaches.

Great Britain Para-Cyclists:The Road to London Ramps up!

Great Britain’s Para-Cyclists began their build up to the London Paralympic games with an endurance camp in Majorca
The recent world track championships in Los Angeles drew a line under the qualification period for the games. Points gained during this qualifying period would determine each nation’s team size. The Majorca camp signalled the start of the final phase in the process. For so long the Olympic & Paralympic games have been on the horizon, now, they are just around the corner.

Based at Santa Maria, some 20 km inland from Palma, the location offered a mix of terrain. Rolling hills, mountain climbs and quiet lanes winding through orange and lemon groves providing the backcloth to the hard work. Long road miles formed a large part of the nine day camp and the mountains offer the chance for quality. Of course, other boxes have to be ticked; speed work was done behind the scooter and extensive and intensive intervals on the fast flat roads, even turbo trainers were in use. Wind and heavy rain on a couple of days was disappointing but not disruptive.

London is obviously the focus but world cup events in Italy and Spain are important stepping stones along the way. Lead coach, Chris Furber gave his perspective “The camp marks the start of the final phase running into the Paralympic games. It’s a time for us to spend some time away with the athletes in order to formulate and make sure we have their phased plans right.To make sure they have all the detail in there and they are comfortable with it. It is also an opportunity to get the guys together to do some important road miles before the summer season kicks off for the road guys. From here most of the squad go on to a period of track work again, which finishes with a camp in May. For the road guys this camp marks the start of season really, after this comes the build-up to the two world cups in Rome & Segovia. The Rome event comes before the selection deadline on the 6th June, so there are opportunities for people to impress ahead of that date. The Segovia event is more about ensuring we have the preparation right going into the games. It’s about practising race strategy, practising tapers, practising warm ups, all those vital things that we will do before the games to make sure everything is in place and works before we get to London. It also gives us a chance to ensure we are getting it right from a staffing point of view, a dress rehersal for everything. The world cup events will also give us a chance to assess the opposition. In Para-cycling you get very few opportunities to actually see everyone. There should not be any shocks in terms of who is there but there may be some shocks in terms of who has moved forward. Traditionally in Paralympic year people will take time off work, perhaps put a little more finance in, nations do move forward quite rapidly in the final months leading up to the games”

The squad were focussed and relaxed on the camp; however film crews from BBC’s Blue Peter and Sky sports reminded them of the importance of 2012.

Even with all the hard work there was still time for a bit of fun!

START on A352 220yds East of Warmwell Cross Rbt at point 34yds past 5th drain cover from Rbt.
Proceed East on A352 to Burton Cross Rbt (5.28 miles).
Circle and retrace to
FINISH at concrete gatepost opposite easternmost break in dual carriageway where footpath crosses road and 0.67 miles east of start.
Any rider observed riding in a manner which may jeopardise his or her own safety, the safety of others and the future of the Sport will be disqualified and reported to the South District Council of Cycling Time Trials.

In addition, whilst this is a great prize list, we are aware that most riders have little or no chance of picking up one of

hard about the best way to recognise that effort - without resorting to random "spot" prizes which only recognise
presence, not achievment. There is no easy answer to that problem and no solution will please everybody. We just
hope that what we have come up with will be seen as a reasonable solution in keeping with the fun ethos of the event.

East Dorset Cycling Association 24

Gary Dighton (Poole Wheelers) confirmed his early season club form with a clear victory in the EDCA 24 mile time trial. Despite the bright sunshine, a chilly northerly breeze was a constant reminder that it was still early spring. Adam Topham’s course record 52.47 from last year was never under threat but take nothing away from Dighton; he looked very strong on the rolling circuit north of Wimborne Minster.

Simon Berogna, (VC ST Raphael/Waites Contracts) off number 10, had set the early pace. Berogna had caught and passed those ahead of him and was first on the road, along the historic Beech Avenue near Kingston Lacy. Dave Pickering (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers) held off the challenge from Dave Dent (Wightlink/Offshore) to claim 3rd.

Dighton was all smiles as he packed his bike away at the HQ. “I am pleased with that I am 30 seconds faster than last year” The smile grew even bigger as daughter Emily came over with tea & cake and confirmed “You won the race daddy”
