GB Team Named for Ostend Para-Cycling World Cup

GREAT BRITAIN CYCLING TEAM NAMED FOR UCI PARA-CYCLING ROAD WORLD CUP IN OSTEND

Craig McCann, Will Bjergfelt and Mel Nicholls have been named in the Great Britain Cycling Team that will compete at the UCI Para-cycling Road World Cup in Ostend, Belgium from 18 – 21 May.

McCann will be aiming to medal for a second consecutive weekend, after winning a silver medal in the T2 road race at the first round in Maniago.

Will Bjergfelt will also be in action after making a promising start to his Great Britain Cycling Team career, finishing in fifth place in the C5 road race in Maniago, while there will also be a debut for handcyclist Mel Nicholls.

Nicholls is new to cycling having previously represented Great Britain as a wheelchair athlete at the Paralympics in London and Rio. She was also a silver medallist at the 2015 IPC World Championships in Doha in the T34 800 metres.

Alongside McCann, Bjergfelt and Nicholls, a number of independent British riders will compete at a world cup for the first time, using the competition in Ostend as valuable experience as well as an opportunity to be officially UCI classified ahead of the final selection for the new para-cycling foundation programme.

Great Britain Cycling Team para-cycling head coach, Jon Norfolk said:

“We got our road season off to a decent start in Maniago and we’ll be looking to continue to build on that momentum in Belgium as we work towards the world championships in South Africa in September.

“It was great to see Craig get on the podium at world cup level for the first time. Winning that first medal is a special moment in any rider’s career and should provide a real confidence boost for him going into the rest of the year. Will also got off to a solid start, while it will be great to see Mel taking the first major step on her transition from athletics to handcycling.”

Tough Final Day for GB in Maniago

TOUGH FINAL DAY FOR GREAT BRITAIN CYCLING TEAM IN MANIAGO ROAD RACES


There were no further medals for the Great Britain Cycling Team on the final day of racing at the UCI Para-cycling World Cup in Maniago.

Steve Bate and Adam Duggleby’s gold medal in the time-trial plus silver medals for Crystal Lane and Craig McCann in the time-trial and road race respectively were the highlights of the weekend as the team eased themselves back into action on the road.

Will Bjergfelt’s fifth place in the road race was the best result of the day and speaking afterwards he said:

““Yeah I’m really happy with that. You never really know coming from the outside, how good everyone is going to be. It was really good to get there, get into the break and get a really good grounding and knowledge of who’s who and how each rider rides. I’m happy with that. It was a hard race.”

In the day’s other races Liz Saul and Crystal Lane both finished in sixth place in the C4 and C5 races while Adam Duggleby and Steve Bate finished in eighth place in the men’s tandem race. Simon Price was forced to abandon in the C2 race after suffering a mechanical following a crash.

Downie Wins in Dorset, Bournemouth Jubilee Wh Purbeck Race, Report,Results

The damp roads from overnight rain were already drying out as the riders started in bright sunshine and a fresh south westerly and it was that fresh south westerly that made the 10 lap Lulworth circuit just a little more testing than it always is! The major break of the race stuck as five strong riders forced a gap on the third circuit which was already 40 seconds by the end of the lap 3. Mike Ford of VC St Raphael, Adrian Lawson & Calum Croft of Latchem Sunrsise RT, Matt Downie of Primera Sports – Team Jobs and Ben Davis of the Bristol Road Club constituted the break and they worked well together to gradually eke out an increasing gap over the bunch. TJ Key has been part of that group but fell back spending a couple of laps in no mans land before being reabsorbed by the bunch. Adrian Lawson took the first prime with apparent ease. Did the others contest it? Hard to tell – everyone looks like they suffer up Newtown Hill as everyone does suffer on it!

By the second prime on lap 7 the gap had grown to around 90 seconds and Calum Croft repeated his team mates earlier success looking ominously strong as he passed over the line ahead of the others. The gap seemed to stabilise on the bunch who were unable to make in roads. Its a course where individuals have won off long breakaway efforts: the 4000ft + of climbing gives no drafting advantage and everyone drops like a stone downhill solo or in a pack. The lead group only disintegrated by in the final mile or so when Adrian Lawson was the first to be distanced leaving the other four to fight out the uphill drag. It was Primera Sports-Team Jobs Matt Downie who outlasted Mike Ford for the win, Ben Davis was close third, with Calum Croft fourth and Lason fifth. Despite several attempts by riders from the bunch to get away the field essentially finished together. It was the home club’s John Samways who struck out for the line first but he was beaten by Nic McKibbin ot Bath CC who brought the bunch home in sixth with Samways seventh, winning the first third cat rider prize. The quality of the racing was such that only one other 3rd cat made the top 15.

McCann adds Silver in Maniago

CRAIG MCCANN ADDS SILVER TO THE GREAT BRITAIN CYCLING TEAM’S MEDAL HAUL IN MANIAGO

There was another silver medal to add to the tally for the Great Britain Cycling Team on the first day of road racing at the UCI Para-cycling World Cup in Maniago as Craig McCann won a gutsy silver medal in the T2 road race.
After a fifth place in yesterday’s time-trial McCann started the race strongly and at the end of lap one was on the wheel of Paralympic and world champion Hans Peter Durst.

However the race was blown wide open during lap two when Peter Durst suffered a puncture leaving him well behind the rest of the field. With the pre-race favourite out of the running it was all to play for with McCann coming through strongly at the front of the group at the end of the penultimate lap.

In the final lap McCann was in a group of three at the front coming into the finishing straight with Belgian rider Tim Celen and Italian Giorgia Farroni for company.
Celen pulled clear to take the gold medal and leave McCann in a battle for second place with Farroni, which the Italian looked to have won with twenty metres to go. However he just left a slight gap for McCann and he took full advantage, lunging for the line and taking second place courtesy of a photo finish.

A fencer at London 2012, McCann said his first world cup medal justifies his decision to make the switch to cycling.

“It’s been a long time coming. I switched sports after London and it’s been a long journey to get to where I am now and all the work has paid off. I thought I had second coming round the corner, I could see the line I wanted to take and I was happy with it and then the Italian flew straight out in front of me and I could just see silver disappear, but for some reason he opened up a tiny gap and I just thought I’ll take it.”

There was a golden start for the Great Britain Cycling Team on the first day of action at the UCI Para-cycling World Cup in Maniago as Steve Bate and Adam Duggleby claimed gold in the time-trial.

In their first race together since the Paralympics they showed they remain the tandem to beat with a dominant performance, finishing well clear of the Dutch and Spanish in second and third place, covering the 24 kilometre route in 28.59.81.

Speaking after the race Bate said:

“There’s still a lot more to come. Adam and I haven’t done that much. We’ve enjoyed a winter off really so it’s nice to come back and stake a claim at the top of podium.

“We thought we’d come here and go well. The course suited us today. It’s really encouraging thinking about the training I’ve got ahead now. There’s certainly a lot more to come.”

There was also a successful return to road action for Crystal Lane in the day’s morning session after she picked up a silver medal.

On his debut for the Great Britain Cycling Team Will Bjergfelt finished in sixth place in the C5 competition, while Liz Saul and Simon Price finished in sixth and seventh place respectively in their classifications.

Craig McCann finished fifth in the T2 time-trial and he’ll be the only Great Britain Cycling Team rider in road race action on Saturday with the rest of the team competing on Sunday.
