3C Cycle experience Women's Race Team

3C Cyclexperience Women’s Race Team is a new team formed in 2015 supported by the shop Cyclexperience at Hythe in Hampshire and the company, Really Useful Box. Established to bring together women wanting to cycle competitively and develop their racing skills. 2015 has been about building experience with many of the 9 riders competing in their first races. The 2016 season will focus on establishing the team at a regional level.

On the Saturday 3rd October myself, and four other members of our newly formed women's team arrived in Downton on the outskirts of the New Forest for the 19th 2-Day Stage Race run by Glenn Longland.
I'm not going to lie, I was nervous! Worries about my fitness and visions of cycling 50km through the New Forest on my own when I inevitably get dropped from the majority male (and subsequently fast) peloton I'm racing against are running through my head. For all five of us, it is our first road race and stage race.
We all arrive, register and begin the inevitable faff that precedes all rides...
'How many gels are you taking...?'
'...What are you wearing - long sleeves or short...?
'...One bottle or two??...'
'...Have you got a track pump I can borrow?'
On registering we find there are only 6 women in a field over 60 riders, five of us from 3C Cycle Experience/Really Useful Box (3C) and Anna Morris from Southampton University (SURC). That's ok, we reason with ourselves, we fully expected to be racing with the men and there are enough of us to have a little battle between us. But still... those butterflies grew a little.
First off, the prologue. A short 500m steep section of road which flattens off to a steady drag up a narrow country lane for a further 2km, the results of which determine where you start in the road race later on in the afternoon. The idea being, with a staggered start, all riders get a chance for glory. A really fun way of trying to standardising the field I thought.
In hindsight, or rather 1 minute into the climb, I came to the conclusion that I overdid the first 500m, my speed suffering in the middle section. Good fun, none-the-less and no doubt a lesson learned in letting adrenaline getting the better of me.
It came as no surprise that the results of the prologue had the majority of the women in the first handicap group for the road race. However, a strong prologue ride from Faith (3C) and Anna (SURC) had split our field with the two of them starting 4 minutes behind in the middle group. The third and fastest group setting off a further 4 minutes behind that.
We all lined up and the first group rolled out, the speed ramped up quickly. It took a little while for the bunch to get organised and then we were doing through-and-off. I hover at the back of the group trying to get into a rhythm. Anya and Suzy (3C) start mixing it, moving up to the front. I feel like I should be moving up to the front too but I know it will only take a couple of turns on the front and a hill in the mix and I'll blow up. No thank you - I'm not cycling the next hour on my own.
Over the course of the next 20-40 minutes the undulations of the notoriously ‘flat’ New Forest takes its toll on the group as we gradually reduce in number.
The adrenaline was running high and I had to force myself to settle, '...should I have a gel? Should I take a drink? Can I keep this up? What's my heart rate...? My heart rate it too high! I should definitely have that gel...... maybe I'll have a gel after the hill...' This internal dialog was on loop in my head. And to confirm, I did try to have a gel but I panicked, ending up shooting the whole thing into my mouth in one, having a coughing fit and regurgitating it everywhere.
As the race progressed I got a little more confident and the nerves settled and by the time I was dropped by the group a little over half way through the race there were only 6 of us left and I was ABSOLUETLY loving it. It felt amazing to be mixing it with the guys and it was one of the most fun times I have had on my bike so far.
I was on my own for last 18km but bunches of the later groups would steam past creating a bit of action and the thought of all the girls chasing me was enough to keep me working and motivated. Faith came past with one other rider and I jumped on her tail for a short respite, but when you compare the pain on his face versus the look on Faith's face - there was no way I was keeping up for too long. About 5km from the finish I was fading and Anna came past looking strong to finish 2nd in the women's field. By the time I got to the finish I was exhausted but on such a high.
We arrived on Sunday to a crisp and misty Downton to find the 15 mile TT course was now 25 miles with an out and back to the Ringwood roundabout. More panic about lack of aero bikes, TT bars and pointy helmets ensues as I admired the machines being put together in the car park with a just a hint of jealousy.
Having done a couple of 10 mile time trials over the summer I knew a bit more about what to expect so I wasn’t too nervous. The road out to the roundabout was gently undulating and with a slight tail wind so it felt pretty good. The second half felt tough as it was getting harder and harder to sustain a good speed, all the while bending myself double in the hope of imitating the aerodynamics of my rivals. By the last 2 miles my speed was dropping and I clicked away at my gears trying to find something that my legs agreed with. Relieved to see the finish I made a mental note to add TT bars and a pointy helmet to my Christmas list.

The prize for first overall female was won Faith of 3C-RUB, followed by Anna from SURC who put in a fast TT time, closing the gap between 1st and 2nd to a small margin. The weekend was a great success, our race team learning a little more about bicycle racing and growing in confidence. The relaxed atmosphere at the event certainly helped, we lost count of the number of times people came up to us and commented on how great it was to see more women at the event. Thank you to them for making us feel welcome, we will be back next year! To all those who took part, well done, a great weekend had by all.

Ed Hatfield, The Wisdom of Youth!

Edward Hatfield has burst on the racing scene in the south this year, bossing the youth racing at Goodwood and finishing the season on a high, winning the road stage of the Glen Longland 2 day in October.

Yes the Longland race is only a chipper, yes Hatfield avoided the scratch group by glass-cranking in the prologue but the guts, aggression & desire were audible & excitingly clear. “Local Riders, Local Races” spoke to the Bournemouth-based youngster who does not turn 16 till December and found a surprisingly focussed head on those young shoulders. “My ultimate goal is to be a professional cyclist, but I'm under no illusions that only the fittest, most dedicated, genetically gifted and lucky individuals can succeed.”
An ambition tempered by pragmatism, wise words indeed.

Hatfield attends the LeAF Athletic academy in Bournemouth, a sports school that offers Watt bikes, cycling coaches, physiotherapists, phycologists and strength and conditioning coaches alongside traditional subjects.
“I believe that I'm in the right place to balance my academic studies along with training.”
Father John introduced Ed to cycling, the son quick to acknowledge the “help, support, finance and guidance” that others might take for granted.
With the 2015 season done & dusted Hatfield is looking forward to some structured winter work;
“Winter training will be excellent for me and from last year this is where I managed to improve the most. I love being in the 'pain cave', however the turbo can be a hard task master. I use 3LC TV sprinting and road race DVD's featuring Mark Cavendish, to help my body prepare for the suffering and hardship”.

It is though, all about the road for Hatfield,
“Being only 62kg I may lack a bit of power but my climbing is reasonable; I feel I can maintain a sustained attack, with a good recovery rate. I like races with hills. Flat time trails are not my forte as I recently discovered, (riding a road bike, he lost over 4 minutes in 20 miles at the Longland race) and I don't particularly like the track.”
His time trialling will improve as he matures so no problem there, not liking the track may hamper his progression more however, British Cycling’s focus is on controllable track results, results that win medals and generate lottery funding, talented young road men can be left to fend for themselves. Still another local youngster, Daniel Lloyd, enjoyed a 12 year career without going near a velodrome.

Role Models?
“The flamboyant Slovakian maverick” is how Hatfield refers to his hero, newly crowned world champion, Peter Sagan, and few of us would disagree with his choice.
Back to the future: “I await next season with anticipation, I eat right and sleep loads and a new sponsorship deal is in the pipeline but as yet nothing has been finalised.”
Commendable discretion for a young man who must have been itching to “tell all”. Very professional!
Sponsorship deals are fine but at 15 hard work is better than free kit, “earning it” a better education than being "given it” but Edward needs no guidance from LR,LR, his feet are planted firmly on the ground (or pedals) and with John in his corner cautioning about the distractions of youth that is where they will stay. “Son, girls are great for looking at but never ever get involved with one" says dad, advice that Ed refers to as “Interesting”

Thank you for entering our event and we trust you will have a safe and enjoyable ride over the roads used for the 1982 World Championships.
We suggest you do not use light tyres or tubulars as there is a greater than normal risk of puncturing in the country lanes.

Spectators and supporters are particularly welcome. The Goodwood Classic is a unique Time Trial in that there are several vantage points around the course for seeing and encouraging riders. However spectators and supporters are requested not to park or stop vehicles or otherwise impede the visibility for marshals and riders at junctions and crossroads. It is particularly important that both riders and marshals have a clear, unobstructed view at Pilleygreen Lodges crossroads where riders will travel in three directions during the event.

THE GOODWOOD CLASSIC - COURSE DETAILS
COURSE P911 DISTANCE 27 MILES

START At the entrance to The Valdoe, approximately 250 yards north of Woodcote RAB on Kennel Hill (GR SU881078).

PROCEED north past the Golf Club and climb Kennel Hill to Charlton Down where take RIGHT fork to descend Knights Hill to Charlton. Turn LEFT at village crossroads to Singleton where bear right keeping to the main street to the T junction with the A286. Turn LEFT on to A286 and proceed south to take second LEFT to climb Town Lane Hill (Singleton Shoot) to Charlton Down. (GR SU880113).

COMMENCE the descent of Kennel Hill and then turn sharp LEFT to proceed east to the GOODWOOD PRIME opposite the plaque to commemorate the 1982 Worlds Cycling Championships (GR SU884108).

CONTINUE east after the Prime past Goodwood Race Course through Pilleygreen Lodges Crossroads and Selhurst Park to Benges (GR SU939120). Turn LEFT on to A285 and descend Upwaltham Hill. Turn sharp LEFT at the bottom of Upwaltham Hill into Droke Lane and proceed to East Dean (GR SU903128). Turn LEFT at village pond in East Dean and climb East Dean Hill to Pilleygreen Lodges Crossroads. Straight across and descend New Barn Hill to Waterbeach and Westerton Crossroads. Turn LEFT and proceed along New Road (Lavant Straight) to junction with A285 (GR SU900075). Turn LEFT on to A285 and proceed through Halnaker to climb Benges Hill (GR SU939120). Turn LEFT and proceed through Selhurst Park and Pilleygreen Lodges Crossroads to the T junction with Kennel Hill at Goodwood Race Course. Turn LEFT to descend Kennel Hill past the Golf Club to

FINISH 250 yards north of Woodcote RAB and approximately 25 yards short of the START (27 Miles) (GR SU881079).

Great care must be taken at all times in the narrow lanes and especially at the following places to meet the requirements of Sussex Police and to ensure their continued co-operation.

Watch out for Deer, Game Birds (the feathered variety) and Cattle.

Tour De France for Portsmouth in 2019?

PORTSMOUTH’S role in the D-Day landings is the centrepiece of a masterplan to bring the Tour de France to the region.
City Leaders want to prepare a bid to the organisers of the world’s greatest cycling race to bring the opening leg to Portsmouth in 2019 – the same year as the 75th anniversary of D-Day. Reports the Portsmouth News.....
“The 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings is significant for us as a city because a number of the naval vessels left from Portsmouth, and this was the biggest contingent that went over and sent troops to the landings.”says Councillor Donna Jones, leader of Portsmouth City Council
It is hoped Tour bosses will see the attraction of elite cyclists riding from the city to the South Downs before heading to the beaches of Normandy where troops – many of whom from this area – landed.
The concept of the sporting spectacle tying in with D-Day commemorations may ‘hit the spot’ with event bosses as they consider the best locations for stages of the event in the years ahead.
And Portsmouth has even more of a chance now London has turned down the chance to host the so-called Grand Depart in 2017.
Tory council leader Donna Jones hopes Portsmouth’s connection to the historic landings during the Second World War will give it the momentum it needs to be selected.
Cllr Jones, who is leading the proposal with Portsmouth’s twin city of Caen in France, said: ‘The 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings is significant for us as a city because a number of the naval vessels left from Portsmouth, and this was the biggest contingent that went over and sent troops to the landings.
‘The landings were the key strategic move that won us the war.
‘The part Portsmouth played in that was absolutely significant.
‘So for us as a city, we were always planning to commemorate the 75th anniversary in a key way – not just for Portsmouth, but a commemoration for the whole of the UK.
‘That historical linkage is an exciting prospect for the Tour de France.’
Cllr Jones added: ‘A lot of preparatory investigation work has been carried out already between myself and the mayor of Caen and our officers.’
But the bid will cost up to £1.5m – and Cllr Jones hopes to secure cash from the government and other sponsors to ease the burden on the council’s coffers.
The Tory councillor wants to promote the national importance of Portsmouth hosting the Tour at a meeting with culture secretary John Whittingdale in the hope money can be secured.
Minister for Portsmouth Mark Francois will be urged to help.Last year, Yorkshire hosted the Grand Depart and millions of pounds was generated for the local economy.

Portsmouth South MP Flick Drummond has thrown her weight behind the bid.
She said: ‘I will see what I can do to bring money in. The council is very strapped for money and this is a lot to be spending.
‘This is about continuing to promote Portsmouth as the place for major sporting attractions, like with Ben Ainslie Racing.
‘In Yorkshire, it brought in a lot of money and it would be a great achievement to have it here.
‘It would be great news for Portsmouth. I would love to see the riders cycle up Portsdown Hill – even though it would be tiny compared to what they normally do.’
Culture bosses say the bid ties in perfectly with plans for the D-Day Museum in Southsea to become a national centre of excellence in time for the 75th commemorations.
As reported, chancellor George Osborne has been called on to cough up the remaining £600,000 needed to help ensure plans to modernise the museum and upgrade all of its exhibits become a reality.
Jane Mee, Transforming the D-Day Museum project director, said: ‘This would be good news for the city and very welcome in the year in which we commemorate the 75th Anniversary of D-Day and the Normandy Landings.
‘It very much fits with our plans for the museum and our aim to make it the National D-Day hub with an international reputation.
‘I’m supportive of anything which highlights D-Day and encourages visitors to our museum – an event like this would be welcome.’
Portsmouth North MP and armed forces minister Penny Mordaunt said: ‘This is timely, given London has said it’s not worth their investment, which has opened the way for other cities like Portsmouth. And clearly with the historical connection with northern France, it helps us in terms of winning a bid.

‘We have that status and Portsmouth is not just like any other city – it’s a city with deep connections. It would be a fantastic attraction for tourists.
‘We know from the experience of Yorkshire that they got a massive return on their investment which they put in.
‘The businesses got a lot of extra footfall and exposure and if that’s the case for us, then that would be great.’
If successful, the 2019 Portsmouth event would follow on from other major events such as the America’s Cup World Series, which was held this summer and is coming back again in July next year.
Cycling groups have already said they would be ‘over the moon’ should Portsmouth be successful.

Bulstrode again at Longland 2 Day

Harry Bulstrode (VC ST Raphael/Waites Contracts) won the Glenn Longland 2 Day after clinching the always decisive 3rd stage Time Trial. Bulstrode finished on a flat tyre in the opening prologue hill climb and conceded further time in the road race after losing contact in the finale. His luck turned on day 2 however as temporary traffic lights forced a late change of course, the hilly test across the forest replaced with the longer out & back down the A338 to Ringwood. Bulstrode, riding in VC ST Raphael colors for the first time, clocked 43:23, the only sub-44 ride on a chilly October morning to win the Downton classic for the second year running.

Winner of the prologue, George Crammond (Soton Uni CC), grabbed second place. 1:08 down, it was a solid weekend for Crammond who finished 2nd on GC. Not surprisingly, overnight leader, Edward Hatfield (UK Biking/Copyrite) dropped out of the top ten, a lack of muscle power & more importantly a time trial machine costing the 15 year old, no doubt though, his time is coming.

Hatfield & Crammond Shine on Day 1 of Longland Classic!

Edward Hatfield (UK Biking) won stage 2 of the Glenn Longland 2 day, not sixteen till December, Hatfield displayed courage and commitment, as he held off the bunch to win.

Earlier George Crammond (Soton Uni CC) had won the Opening hill climb stage at Downton, Wilts.

Crammond had 1 second in hand over the in- form Kim Little (Merida UK), Little finished 3 secs clear of Mike Cooke (Portsdown Hill CC).

The race concludes on Sunday (4th) a 24km time trial across the New Forest at Fordingbridge.
