Wishing all our readers a happy Christmas and a successful 2014. “Local Riders, Local Races” would also like to thank the countless people who contribute results and cycling news,(We could not do it without you)and of course our advertisers. The New Year will hold plenty of racing opportunities in the south, the dependable Mountbatten circuits promoted by Sue & Tim Knight, and the new Friday night Bournemouth track league will run season-long. The Rob Jefferies Memorial open track meeting takes place on 20th July courtesy of Poole Wheelers. Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers bring the National 50 mile time trial championships to Dorset on 7/8th June. Along with the Thursday evening Moreton road series, the guys at UK Biking will also promote two British Cycling road races in Dorset and Mountain biking will return to Crow Hill on April 27th and to Wareham forest (Date to be confirmed). Entries for the “Local Riders, Local Races” sponsored “One Day in Dorset” will open on January 1st and the 97 mile course in rural Dorset will produce a classic race. Watch out too for some exciting news in January on the Bournemouth Criterium! Bike racing in Dorset & the south of England really is on the up and 2014 promises to be a great year!

Dorset Miles:No Gifts

Bear Cross, Longham, Ham Lane, Canford Bottom, Broom Hill, God’s Blessing Green, Holt & Horton, a good pace, clear blue skies, wind on our backs and last night’s heavy rain just something to talk about. Haythorne, Woodlands, Edmondsham and over to Sixpenny Handley, eleven of us left Bear Cross, nine start the climb from Tollard Royal, six reach the summit of Win Green, the highest point in Dorset (It would be, were it not just over the border in Wiltshire). Lines on a map, responsible for such a lot! A loop down to Charlton, the A30, Cann Common and Zig Zag hill. (Back in Dorset now). It takes us 10 minutes to regain the height it took us 2 minutes to lose and we are back at the top in Wiltshire. A quick blast all the way to the Horton Inn, briefly on the main road then left to Didlington, the narrow lane is plastered with mud and leaves and the climb up to Chalbury is a little bugger! A glance in the direction of Horton Tower, then on to Gaunts and Pig Oak. The Stocks Inn at Furzehill always looks inviting. They used to put bowls of hot roast potatoes on the bar in Winters past, they may still do but we cannot confirm, Deans Grove, Wimborne and a parting of the ways. Back along Ham Lane and four become two. Hurn Airport, then left to the Avon Causeway, despite being just two miles from home we head to Sopley for a bit “Extra”, 4 hrs. 25 looks better in the training diary than 3hrs 45, we all know that. Good condition will be found beneath no Christmas tree, it is a gift to yourself, sourced yourself, earn’t yourself. Let us hope it lasts longer than those socks from your Nan!

Bournemouth Track League 2014, Update!

Preparations continue apace, ahead of next year’s BOURNEMOUTH TRACK LEAGUE. The Friday night league, running from 2nd May through till the 29th August 2014 has secured sponsorship, which will include leader’s jerseys, (Further details in due course). Dorset Cycling Development Group has offered support in sourcing photo finish equipment and a Public Address system. On a practical level, race permits and first aid are in place and the league will be run as a Regional C event, meaning no British Cycling License points but slightly cheaper levies. In the dark days of winter thoughts are already turning to long sunny evenings and exciting action at the Bournemouth Cycling Centre Track.

Full Course Description
START at first lamp post south of entrance to Wellworthy’s factory at Ringwood on B3347 (SU153044). Proceed south via Bisterne and Avon to Sopley one-way system (5.2 m). Turn right over bridge at the Woolpack and retrace to Ringwood via Avon and Bisterne to FINISH at drain, 10 yds south of junction with Hampshire Hatches Lane at Moortown Green (SU153038). Observers may be in attendance along the course. (No times will be given to riders at the finish)

Safety Instructions
Riders must:
• Not make U-turns in the vicinity of the Start or Finish
• Not warm up on the course
• Not stop at the finish, but continue to the event Headquarters
• Not cut corner at Sopley one-way system on first right turn as the road is two-way at this point
• Take extra care:
From start to Moortown lane – busy with houses and side roads, busy garage on left, finish on right
Avon Tyrrell Farm – sharp bend with possible gravel
Avon Causeway – beware of traffic stopping to turn right or emerging onto course
Any rider observed riding in a manner which may jeopardise his/her own safety, the safety of others or the future of the Sport, will be disqualified and reported to the South District Council of Cycling Time Trials.

Cycling Time Trials and the event promoters strongly advise you to wear a HARD SHELL HELMET that meets an internationally accepted safe standard
In accordance with Regulation 15, ALL JUNIOR competitors must wear Protective Hard Shell Helmets
It is advisable that a WORKING REAR LIGHT either flashing or constant is fitted to the machine in a position visible to following road users and is active while the machine is in use.

Dorset Miles, A Character Reference!

2 hours in light rain + 2 hours in heavy rain = 1 tough ride! Character building they call it, there comes a time when dry feet are preferable to more character though and that time is now. "STOP MOANING, SUCK IT UP & GET ON WITH IT",says any coach worth his wages, so we do, all four of us. From Bear Cross heading west past Canford School, into Wimborne then the Cowgrove & Langton Long to Blandford, the town is busy but it is soon behind us. Climbing up by Bryanstone the weather worsens, a submerged pothole on the descent to Winterborne Stickland claims a rear wheel puncture and it is raining hard. Turn right to Hedge End then left to climb Bulbarrow Hill, it is three miles to the top but never steep and with the wind in the South-west we are protected a little. You can see the hills of Somerset from the summit of Bulbarrow but not today, we have climbed into a cloud and it’s not called number 9! Turning into the wind, rain stings the lips as we drop down to Ansty Cross. The road is fast above Bramblecoombe, a car driver, impatient to pass, sounds his horn continually. When he eventually comes by, despite the driving rain he winds his window down and shouts something, the words are lost in the wind but we suspect he was not enquiring after our welfare. On to Milborne St Andrew & Bere Regis, Lane End & Bloxworth, the now closed road that leads to the A35 still has white line markings but the defined edges are gone as nature gradually reclaims its land, like form & class, one is temporary, one is permanent. East & West Morden, Winterborne Zelston, the usual suspects of Lytchett & Pardys hill takes their toll as we retrace back to Wimborne, Parley Cross and home. The heavy rain has washed the greasy slick of the last few weeks from the roads allowing cornering with confidence, apart from that, there is little positive to say about a typical mid-December day.

Stockbridge Down Road Race Returns in 2014

The Stockbridge down Road Race, promoted by Andover Wheelers returns for 2014. Stockbridge Down Road Race is based on a rolling 13 mile circuit between the small town of Stockbridge and the city of Winchester in Hampshire, 80 miles race distance which includes 7 ascents of Winton Hill, with the race finish at the top after 6 full laps. Once again the event will be sponsored by "Jamie Shearer Roofing" which ensures a decent prize fund, full NEG support, race service and Accredited Marshalling of the complete circuit. The race winner will also be presented with the superb "Weyhill Weekend" Trophy, which is currently held by 2013 race winner George Harper while riding for Felt RT.

Dorset Miles, Therapy for the Here & Now

Only eight riders at Bear Cross, despite the blue December sky: it’s only going to get worse. A broken mudguard reduced our number by one as we headed out to Canford Bottom and Holt. Across to Higher Row, Mannington and Three Legged Cross, the roads were damp & greasy, this year’s gatorskins do not inspire confidence. Horton, Woodlands, Cranborne and the edge of Damerham, conversation is brisk, as is the pace, the long rise out of Rockbourne up to the A354 tempers both, before the scream down to Coombe Bisset. Into the wind through the Ebble valley, the road gets muckier as the miles stack up. Nearly at Shaftesbury but not quite, we turn to Cann Common and Zig-Zag Hill, someone always wants to stretch their legs and today is no different, we each reach the top on our own. Fast now, down to Farnham and the main road again, over to the Horton Inn and Chalbury common, the chatter has dried up, replaced with concentration. Base work, level one, getting the miles in! Call it what you will, despite falling in and out of favour with coaches & trainers, winter miles are still the building blocks of any successful racing season. Never enough on their own, never the complete answer, the fact remains, those with miles in the legs ride better than those who talk about it! Pig Oak, Furzehill, Colehill, we are looking at 80 plus miles as we start to separate. It’s all about training of course but there is something more, its therapy, not all of us knows it but we all GET it in the end. Workaday problems, insurmountable mid- week, are put into true perspective come Sunday afternoon. It’s not about cyclists, it’s not about motorists, it’s about people, too hastily, do we fit into our “boxes”, 4hours 30 minutes in the saddle makes us reasonable sometimes.. The cup of tea, the slice of something sweet, the hot bath, the cold beer is ours whenever we want but never so welcome as when well earn’t, it’s not about the bike it’s because of the bike!
