Severn Bridge RR, Graham Wins, Downie Shows Early Season Form

South region champion Matt Downie (TAAP Cervelo) continues his solid start to the season, taking second place at the Severn Bridge Road Race on Sunday (4th) behind Rupert Graham (Spirit Tifosi). Downie, who won the king of the mountains classification, finished second behind Marcin Bialoblocki at the Devon Primavera race the previous weekend and surely a win cannot be too far away! Next up for Downie is the Jock Wadley Memorial in Essex next weekend

" nothing was going for the first half of the race everyone was chasing everything. Then it was hacking it down and everyone started sitting up so I put in an attack and quickly got a decent gap. I bridged over to Andy Turner (great tester) and we worked well together. I could see they were chasing behind but we kept pressing on. Rupert from Spirit Tifosi bridged across by himself and we were all working well together on the last lap we had well over 2 mins 30 seconds on the main bunch and about 50 seconds on some chasers. On the last climb Rupert went hard I followed, Andy got dropped then my legs just gave up and Rupert went on to win it and I crossed for second"

Test Valley Weekend Falls Victim to Weather

The Test Valley Week-end, incorporating the Antelope Two-Up & The "Chalky White" memorial 10 has fallen victim to the bad weather sweeping across the country. Heavy snow on both courses at Stockbridge (P730) & Kings Sombourne (P140), is unlikely to clear before Saturday so organiser Glenn Longland (pictured) has decided to postpone both races. " I am very sorry to tell you all i have postponed the Test Valley Week-End, due to the weather, i cannot see the snow vanishing in 2 days. After 44 years of promoting cycling events this is the first time i have had to cancel an event." said Longland who hopes to reschedule both events later in the season.

Andover Wheelers Hardriders 24, Results

P614 Wins for Matt Buckley & Dave Dent
On what was a very chilly – no, freezing - morning a large number of riders braved the conditions to take part
in the second edition of our Hard Riders event. As always, this course offers a real challenge to all competitors
with a mix of all terrain and uncertain weather conditions that February can bring.
Congratulations to Dave Dent of GS Stella in the Road Bike and our very own Matt Buckley of Andover Wheelers
in the Time Trial Category for their excellent times of 1 hr and 30 secs and 58 mins 32 secs respectively. Dave’s
time would have secured sixth place in the TT category so very well done on an outstanding time. Well done to
everyone on your ride in what were fantastic times in testing conditions especially so early in the season.
A huge thank you to the following, without whose help, we would not be able to put our race on:
• Help in setting up and running race HQ –Sarah Webber, Jo Parmenter and Ruby Bissett;
• Signing the Course – Jamie Shearer and Mike Webber;
• Start Timekeeper – Mike Webber;
• Pusher Off – Gregg James;
• Finish Timekeeper – Mary Corbett (Sotonia CC); Recorder – Norman Harvey (Sotonia CC);
• Finish Time Liaison – Elaine Gardner;
• Marshalls – Alastair Currie, Paul Welch, Gary Richardson, Lisa Baker-Richardson, Simon West, Nick
Connel-Smith, Jamie Shearer, Neil Adlem, Nick Cooper, Barry Pointer, Simon West, Cameron Thompson,
Stuart Thompson, Trevor West, Paul Daley, and Stuart Rhodes.
And, of course, a huge thank you to Alison Jennings, Jo Parmenter and Adele Pickering who kindly made and
donated all the lovely cakes.

VC ST Rapahael Hardriders, Wins for McNamara, Dailey,Taylor & Mitchell

Chris McNamara (Nuun Sigma Sport London) won the VC ST Raphael "Hardriders" 16.5 mile time trial for the second time in three years, clocking 38:08 on the Portsdown Hill circuit.
Gary Chambers (No Pinz) & Matt Downie tied for second place just 9 seconds down on McNamara on a grey, windless February morning on the Hampshire coast.
Triathlete, Simone Daily (...a3crg) repeated her win of last year, the 29 year old recording a time of 44:27 for the two laps to take the womens race ahead Sarah Matthews (...a3crg), 45:56 and Kirsty Mcseveney (Fareham Wheelers). McNamara had finished 10th at the Perfs Pedal race the previous week on the same circuit and celebrated something of a weekend double as Trainsharp, coached rider, Charles Mitchell (...a3crg) won the preceding road bike event in 40 minutes dead, 66 seconds too fast for evergreen Dave Dent (GS Stella), Dent finishing ahead of the much- fancied Lewis Keightley (Primera-Team Jobs). Lara Taylor (VC Godalming & Haslemere) scored a narrow win in the womens race her 51:59, 30 seconds quicker than Kym Harvey (Fareham Wheelers) with Lucy Mitchell (Petersfield Tri Club), 52:41, third. VC ST Raphael put on a great event, just 7 days after their flagship road race promotion, well marshalled and signposted and with an extensive prize list, the standard is set!

Rider Reaction
Chris McNamara " The weather was good but i went far too hard on the first lap and died on the second lap, i really struggled. I have not done any training on the time trial bike, there is quite a difference on what power you can hold in a road position to a TT position, it takes a while to get used to it. I tried to hit the uphill's really hard and hang on a bit, i think i did that ok. It will be interesting to see the lap splits, i think i rode the first lap a lot quicker. I am pleased to win it but it is always more enjoyable to finish strong than to be hanging on!"

Simone Dailey
"Very happy, i have just come off of a really big training black but i am putting a lot more power out this year. I ran 28 miles yesterday so to come in on tired legs is pleasing, it would be interesting to see how i go on fresh legs. It was ok out there today, the wind was not as strong as i thought it would be"
Lara Taylor "It was a great race, i really enjoyed it, a lovely course. I have done a lot of turbo, Zwift over the winter and getting out on the road when i can. I like these winter time trial courses off the main roads. Definitely going to celebrate this afternoon i have a bottle of wine to drink!"
Charles Mitchell " I was hoping for the win but you never know this early in the year, i am going to have a go at the BBAR this season, the 12 hour will be the test!"
