Team Manager & Coaching Opportunities with South Region Youth

The South Region Youth Work Group is looking to appoint a Team Manager and Team Coach for each of the three Inter-Regional Championships in 2017.

The events pit the best riders in the country against each other and provide an incredible development opportunity for the selected riders. In addition, they are great development events for aspiring Team Managers and Coaches. Applications please in the first instance to SouthYouthTeam@outlook.com closing date: January 31st 2017

Team Manager and Team Coach - Job Description
The Team Manager will be responsible for:
1. Working with the Youth Work Group to manage the team’s participation at the events and to be part of rider selection discussions prior to the final selection being made by the Youth Work Group.
2. Providing and organising some event specific training for the selected riders.
3. Working with the Youth Work Group to organise logistics, travel and accommodation for the event.
4. Dealing with any team entry and administration needed.
5. Managing the team during the event.
6. Upholding a duty of care and adhering to the Team Manager’s Code of Conduct, as published by British Cycling, ahead of the event.
7. Providing all financial costs and receipts for the event to the Youth Work Group.
8. Reporting back (as a written brief) to the Youth Work Group on the performance of the team at the event.

The Team Coach will be responsible for:
1. Supporting the Team Manager by planning discipline specific sessions for ALL long listed riders; the Coach leading on training and the Manager organising bookings etc.
2. Providing coaching advice to the riders in the team whilst at the event and helping riders to perform to the best of their ability.
3. Supporting the riders with mechanical and technical advice and help.
4. Upholding a duty of care and adhering to the Team Coach’s Code of Conduct, as published by British Cycling, ahead of the event. 

All Team Manager and Team Coach candidates must:
• Be current British Cycling members
• Have a validated and up to date Enhanced DBS check with British Cycling
• Have passed a safeguarding and protecting children course within the last 3 years
• Have proven previous experience of working with young people, preferably (although not essential) from a BC Go-Ride club, as this will ensure they are knowledgeable of the best practices when working with young people
• Have in depth knowledge and experience of the discipline of the event applying for (Road, Track or Mountain Bike)
• Have knowledge of Anti-Doping procedures
• Respect the Rider code of conduct, and set good examples
• Have a valid Level 2 British Cycling coaching qualification (Team Coach role only)
• Hold a current valid BC verified First Aid certificate (Team Coach role only)

Coaching News:BC South Region Youth Work Group

In 2016 the newly formed South Youth Work Group were allowed free rein to deliver a training and selection process to aid the development of Youth riders. As a result the South Region competed with great success at national level in the Inter-Regional Championships and at the UK School Games.
All regions are now beginning to take a more comprehensive view of developing their squads for the Inter-Regional Championships; beginning with a coaching pathway within the regions to allow the development of many riders rather than narrowing the focus purely onto the smaller team that is ultimately selected for competition. Elements of this are already programmed into the respective Regional School of Racing calendar, but the South Region also want to encourage volunteers to assist in creating a coaching infrastructure that creates a throughput of all riders into the selection process at U16 level.
To this end, the South Region is looking to build on the well received and highly successful “South Day” at Bournemouth last season. In developing a calendar of sessions for riders with aspirations to compete at Inter-Regional Championships it is hoped that they will take the opportunity to establish themselves as part of the South team, whether it be over a number of selected events or, in the case of much younger riders, a number of years. By generating an early team ethos it is anticipated that riders will be prepared fully for the challenges of being a strong team member at the Inter-Regional Championships, with the coaching sessions providing a greater chance to focus on specific technical requirements and affording the opportunity for less experienced riders to learn from their more experienced peers. It is hoped that by engaging with local club coaches in the delivery of these sessions that the reach of the Inter-Regional set up in the South Region will be expanded and that the coaching at a club level will benefit from the exposure to some of the finest youth riders in the country.
To assist in the “South Day” programme and to expand the pool of volunteers the Youth Work Group would welcome applications from any club member who wishes to help support this particular area of Youth development. In addition, the Youth Work Group would also welcome applications from those who wish to be considered either as a Team Manager or Team Coach for each of the Road, Track and MTB disciplines. Dorset Miles: Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 50 Mile Reliability Trial

117 signed on for the 30th ish Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 50 mile reliability trial, with all but a few signing back in, inside the 4 hour time limit. At just £1 a ride all got good value for money on a sharp, bright November morning, the temperature rising in tandem with the north westerly wind. To ease the passage through Wimborne riders were set off in groups of 30 a few minutes apart, the climb of Rowlands hill forcing selections early doors. Anti clockwise this year, its harder against the clock, the route has changed little over the years, heading out to Deansgrove, Furzehill, Gaunts Common and down to Horton. The rise up from Woodlands thins the group, most rejoining on the descent, then on to Knowlton and the ruined, haunted church. This time last year the Drovers Arms at Gussage All Saints was boarded up, it was warming to see the spruced up community pub awaiting the first customers of the day. The climb up from Gussage St Michael is steep but short and we are quickly down the other side at Long Crichel and the A354, left at Tarrant Hinton, Tarrant Launceston, Tarrant Monkton & Tarrant Rawston, thankfully the climb up to the golf course puts the Tarrants behind us and the scream down to Blandford Forum is only spoilt if you have to stop at the roundabout at the bottom, we had to stop. Through the town and then the long drag up and over to Winterborne Stickland, steeper at the bottom, the climb levels off but the height gained puts us into the wind for the first time. The fresh air slows us but not for long, we are heading east and lined out through Winterborne Whitechurch as pressure is applied on the front. Across the A31 at Red Post and the twisty, gravel strewn lanes around Morden, the tough approach to Lytchett Matravers softens the legs before the final climb up to the village. Pardys Hill is short but steep, crest that and all that remains is the dash along Merley lane, tea & cake and the chance to talk through the whole ride again! "We could call this a sportif and charge £20" says one green, keen Jubilee member. "Not on my watch" growls the "stuck in the past" chairman!

New Name Morvelo Basso RT Target Perfs!

Press Release – Morvelo Basso Racing Team

Following on from the success of last season as the HR Owen Maserati RT, the same team returns with added strength including South region road silver medalist, Ben Marks, under the new name of the ’Morvelo Basso Racing Team’

Once again under the guidance of assistant manager Tom Kirk and team manager Adam Moore, the Morvelo Basso Racing Team has added more quality and support to the team for 2016/17.

“We wanted to bring in a certain level of rider for next season to strengthen the team but we also wanted to include more Under 23’s as we are keen to help develop and progress them by racing at the bigger events. We now have great fire power for next season and we can’t wait to get going at the Perfs which well be our first team race of the season.

After the success of the team this season, and gaining a guest entry for the Tour Series, new title sponsors Basso Bikes and Morvelo Bicycle Apparel are keen to be involved. Joint owner Oli Pepper was delighted at the opportunity of sponsoring a racing team. ‘’We wanted to back a team that is dedicated and passionate about racing but also enjoy it. What an eventful week. I'd been lucky enough to ride the new Cannondale SuperX Team Edition disc bike back to back with the current SuperX Hi-Mod canti bike and wow, what a difference. All of the new traits of the disc bike were immediately apparent, but more of that at a later date... All that needs to be said at this point is I must have one, and anyone who knows me, knows I'm not a patient person. The plan for the week was obtaining a new bike!

So this should be easy. Phone the sponsor, Primera Sport, who have been fantastic, order a 56cm bike, wait (hopefully no time at all) and come round 7 of the Wessesx League I'd be astride my new steed. Only not so. Firstly, Cannondale only support three models of SuperX into the UK market. 105, Ultegra and Force 1. No green and black Team Edition (that's US only it appears).…The search for a new bike continues.......

In better news I was sent a new larger skin suit and Specialized Evade helmet, again through Primera Sport, in white to match the "high-gloss don't forget ya sunglasses" Sidi Dragons. The helmet is a fine piece of kit, fitting first time and having loads of adjustment to obtain a comfortable fit. A couple of test rides later and I can report no adverse effects of any kind. No annoying pressure points, no slip, no nonsense. We like it, it stays!

And what a sponsor. When I joined the team at the start of the ‘cross season (the end of their road season) they only had medium skinsuits remaining. Six weeks later and after special allowances, I'm sent a large skinsuit I'm sure Primera Sport didn't have to, but they did, and that in itself speaks volumes...

The course at Sparsholt is a good one. I've raced here a number of times but never seemingly in the dry until today. It's a long course, well over 8 minutes per lap and generally flat with a mix of fast flowing fields on short grass, a few bumpy technical sections, some gravel and a huge number of short switchbacks at the halfway point, all making a course worthy of hosting larger events than the Wessex League alone. Overall a cracking course and a well-run event, much akin to many of the Wessex events over this and previous seasons.

And so to the racing. Gridded this week behind a rider who has only raced one event this season and finished behind me, I find myself a row behind him before the off. Still, that wasn't such a problem as the course provided many overtaking opportunities which I attempted to put into good use from the whistle. Shortly after the start I find myself nose to tail with my two team mates, Oscar Hutchins in front and Joe Andrews behind. Oscar looking super strong and putting the elite road miles in his legs to good use pushing hard out of each turn. I stuck with him for the first lap before he started to ease away going on to finish a minute and a half up. For me the racing was good and once again I found myself in my natural position with Ryan Smith (Maserati RT). Ryan's been going well lately so to be around him is great, along with a couple of other guys including Karl Norfolk. Between the four of us we jockeyed for positions for the final three laps, each trying to escape but to no avail. And so, with a little over half a lap to go I find myself purposely at the front of the group. Half a lap out isn't so bad - still plenty of time to react to any moves, but as the turns ticked away the tension builds. My plan was simple, to get to the final forest section in front, therefore using the single track to recover without the fear of being overtaken, and then be first to the final left hander before launching my finish from there. Hopefully it would be more launched than lunched, and thankfully that's what it was. Being first in to, and consequently out of, the final corner really helps, and on this occasion worked to perfection.

Calshot Track League returns 6th November

As the track season gets into full swing, Sunday 6th November sees the return of the Calshot Winter Track League. The league runs weekly till 5th February 2017* and features racing for U8/U10/U12/U14/U16 & E/1/2/3/4 category riders. Tim & Sue Knight, stalwarts of cycling in the south, have been running the winter league since 1996. The Velodrome at Calshot, Hampshire is the second smallest in the world at only 142 m (466 ft.) and the steep banking is custom designed to fit inside the former RAF aircraft hangar. Forest City Velodrome in London, Ontario, Canada, is the world's shortest at 138 m (453 ft.). Built to fit a hockey arena, it too has steep banking.

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 50 Mile Reliability Trial

The popular Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers Winter reliability trial series kicks off this weekend, a good starting point for winter training after the traditional easy miles of October. Run over mainly rural roads, the reliability trials offer a great test of rider condition across the off-season. The increasing distances will ensure those hoping to complete all four rides stay focused through the winter months!

Dorset Miles: Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers Club Run

Fourteen meet at Kinson library for the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers club run, that staple diet of mile-hungry winter riders. Numbers were down a bit on the week before, the extra hour in bed turning into two perhaps. North west to Merley, Oakley, Ashington and Corfe Mullen. The drop down Pardys hill is good fun but at the bottom the chairman punctures, all stop and wait, suitable respect for the title. Not putting the tyre on properly is a beginners mistake and quite rightly only a few wait this time. Chasing briskly, Lytchett Matravers, Organford, Sandford & Wareham, no sign of our group but the Bridport Wobbly Wheelers, leaving their coffee stop at the Quay tow us across to Wool via Ridge & West Holme, deep rim wheels, shorts, track mitts, its more like the end of April than the end of October. The West Bay collective press on to Moreton as we turn left to East Knighton and across the A352 to Winfrith Newburgh. The climb of "Five Marys" to Daggers Gate puts and end to the conversation, the reward is a view of the coast and the scream down to Lulworth Cove. We arrive before those in front but only by 5 minutes, turns out there is more than one road to Lulworth! a brief discussion on who had the hardest trip is interrupted by tea and cakes and quickly forgotten. The sun is shining as we climb away from the Cove, the blood in our stomachs, not where it is needed in our legs. Fast down to East Lulworth then up Whiteway, there is no "s" and down Steeple, Church Knowle and Corfe Castle, run's captain for the day is Matt Rollinson and he is flying. We hang on as best we can across Rempstone and up to the golf club, the view across Poole harbour is stunning but i was mostly looking down! The obligatory dash through Studland to the ferry is always good fun, the ride back across town, not so much.

PrimeraTeamjobs Celebrate 25 Years!

Primera is 25 years old in 2017 and they intend to celebrate that anniversary with a great team.

Jason Gault, Primera-TeamJobs Road Team manager, has selected his team for the road race section with some exciting new riders joining for the new season. The aim is to get good riders racing in road races around the UK and working as a team in full support of each other.

Matt Downie, TJ Key, Mike Bradbury, Julian Lockwood & Alex Collins have signed for the coming season. These riders will be joining Edward Hatfield, Alex Hart & Jason Gault to build a strong team. The team also welcomes a new sponsor on board. Ellis Jones solicitors in Bournemouth joins main sponsor ‘TeamJobs Recruitment’ and ‘Breeze Volkswagen’ for 2017.

Primera-TeamJobs will be naming team riders from other sectors at the end of the year. We have riders competing in Time Trials, Criterium, Cyclocross, Mountain Bike & Triathlon races worldwide.

Alex Collins

PrimerateamJobs is not about winning the Tour De France. They are working towards giving good cyclists the chance to ride as a team and get the best from our great sport. We have had many young riders join us, then when the time is right they move to a bigger team and race on the continent. We always wish them well and love seeing them progress to pro level. Main objective is to enjoy every ride in the saddle and learn to work as a close team.

This will be our 2nd year working with TeamJobs Recruitment and Breeze Volkswagon, all three of us enjoy seeing the young riders progress in their sport and life. This year we welcome Ellis Jones Solicitors as additional team sponsors, Ellis Jones are a local company who represent cyclists who have been involved in an accident.

David McWilliam of Ellis Jones is himself a very keen cyclist who takes on challenges such as riding from Rome to Home in support of the Steve Bernard Foundation, a charity we are both supporters of. When we talked to David about supporting the team he jumped at the opportunity, he had followed the team riders over the past few years and wanted to help build riders cycling careers.

Track & Circuit Racing Return to Portsmouth for 2017

TRACK RACING RETURNS TO PORTSMOUTH

Track racing returns to Portsmouth for 2017 with two counters for BC National Series along with a series of Open track Meetings for grass roots riders.
Racing Club Omega will be organising a Counter of the BC National Hard Track Endurance League at Easter along with the first counting round of Group 6 for the BC National Youth Track Omnium 2017.
A new venture following on from the successful fixed wheel racing at the Calshot Winter Track League is a series of five stand alone open Track Meetings to be organised on the first Saturday afternoon of the month starting in April and running until August.
All youth categories on fixed wheel will be catered for at most of the dates and whilst time has been allowed for women in the programme we hope they will support the events (please see notes below for the few exceptions)

CIRCUIT RACING AT PORTSMOUTH DURING 2017
Racing Club Omega are pleased to announce that they will be continuing to organise circuit racing at the Mountbatten Centre in Portsmouth during 2017.
There is a problem with the floodlights at the Mountbatten Centre, but we have been assured that the issue should be resolved by Easter and if this is the case then we might be able to include some additional categories in the evening events.

Hence the season will start at Easter with the Portsmouth Easter Circuits and then move into the Portsmouth Evening Circuits which are planned to start in May and run until August at the moment.

We are hopefully going to add more weekend dates as and when the floodlight work has been completed at the venue.
