Eastbourne Cycling Festival to Feature Stage Race & Town Centre Crit!

The Eastbourne Cycling festival will feature a stage race and town centre Criterium in a packed programme of cyling events in June. The two day festival on 13th & 14th June will also feature urban cycloCross, a Mountain bike sportive, Wattbike challenge, School relay races and a penny farthing race. STAGE 1
Just under 40 miles of riding including the famous Beachy Head circuit, last seen in action on the Tour of Britain. The race starts on King Edwards Parade with a neutralised section up to Bedes School where the flag drops for 4 ¾ laps of the circuit with the finish at the top of Beachy Head. With well over a 1,000 metres of climbing this is one hard start to the Stage Race.
SATURDAY 13 JUNE - 5PM
STAGE 2
A two kilometre Time Trial on the Festival closed road circuit. This will test riders skills round the tight circuit as well as their powers of recovery after the gruelling first stage.
SUNDAY 14 JUNE - 2.45PM
STAGE 3
Sunday sees the final stage of the race, a 1 hour + 5 laps criterium race on the closed road circuit. This will really test the riders' endurance & sprint skills as well as their tactical acumen.
In each of the three stages the riders will fight it out for the prestigious stage wins, and the rider who has the lowest overall time over all three stages will go on to be the winner.
So the beauty of the Stage Race is that a rider does not have to win all or any of the individual stages to win overall.
Consistency, tactical skills, power, endurance - if you've got all these then the stage race is yours.
This promises to be an epic 2 days of racing whether going for the win or just trying to survive.

Syme again at Sandie Radford!

Andrew Syme (Primera-Sport.com) won the 35 mile Sandie Radford Memorial on a sunny, windy afternoon at Nomansland in the New Forest. The twenty one year old displayed a confident maturity to win the race for the second year running. Never putting his nose into the wind, never responding to the constant attacks, never panicking when gaps opened, Syme only hit the front on the steepest part of the twice-climbed Pipers Waite Hill, twenty yards from the line. A sore knee had kept him off the bike during the week but there was no sign of the injury as he pulled out ten lengths in the finale. Sixteen year old Charlie Cooper (Eden Veranda) riding his first ever road race grabbed second place ahead of Pete Warner (RideBike.co.uk). The young Southampton-based triathlete is equally talented in the water and on the run, a bright future beckons. Predictably it was Rowan Horner (VC ST Raphael/Waites Contracts) who pulled out an early lead, the experienced tester gaining a small gap with Dave Dalton (Fareham Wheelers), the pair were left to waste energy in the strong wind before the race hit the climb for the first time. The hill did its job,the race split, the two became ten and Syme prepared to reprise his winning move of twelve months ago.

Surrey League Promoting Women's Racing in 2015

Promoting Women's Racing in the Surrey League 2015

The Surrey League is taking a proactive stance in promoting women's cycling, once again putting on a great selection of races for women in 2015. This will have a two fold benefit to the sport; making it more accessible to novice female riders, whilst also making racing more exciting for both female riders and spectators. Women can feel intimidated when taking the jump to racing if they are forced to mix in with men, so hopefully the opportunity to race in all women events will help grow the sport. It also makes for exciting racing when there is no interference from the men's race and the women are able to compete using the race craft and tactics which make this such a beautiful sport.
There will be no shortage in opportunities for women riders in the Surrey League this year, with a twelve race series for 3/4 cat riders at Dunsfold Park commencing on Friday the 8th of May and a wide selection of other races spanning the calendar, from February to September.
Other highlights for the 2015 season include the South East Regional Championships on the 16th of May and the Women's 3 Day Stage Race running from the 29th to the 31st of August. These races promise to be hard fought and should showcase some of the top talent in the region, whilst allowing up and coming riders to test themselves, and perhaps even show up more established riders with a surprise result.
Another step that the Surrey League is taking to improve the safety of novice racers this year is the introduction of training days for 4th category riders. Ladies (and men) wishing to race in the League as 4th cat riders this year will need to first attend two of these training days. The training offered on these days will go a long way to improving both the safety and competitive ability of those riders new to the racing scene. For more information on these training days, visit the Surrey League website. Below is a list of the Surrey League events which will incorporate women only categories. All of these events (apart from the South East Championship Road Race) will be part of a season long competition, where points can be scored in each race towards an overall ranking. There is also the opportunity to race against men, should women which to do so, where they are able to gather additional points towards their ranking within the Surrey League. The top three ranked women will be awarded prizes in November at a prize presentation. Last year's winner received a caricature of herself by Marty McCrossan, in addition to her prize. The most improved woman rider last year won a free entry to the London 2 Paris ride.
