The new race season is on the horizon and “One Day in Dorset” sponsored by” Local Riders, Local Races” and supported by Poole Wheelers are already receiving entries for their 97 mile road race. Aylesbury –based, SpiritBikes Racing Team is the latest team to sign up for this National A event on 24th May. Under 23 riders Ed Clemens & Chris Dredge will lead the five man squad backed by, Mark Baines, Andrew Marriott & Jack Waller. “One Day in Dorset” promises to be a dramatic, exciting race, the tough “parcours” designed to challenge the peloton and provide a real spectacle.

Bike handling ability - cornering skills etc
Finish position
Tactical awareness
Being a selfless team player
Attendance at additional sessions ie South RSR’s or any team training days, will also be a requirement,
The selectors will consider performances in each individual event in its own right, taking into account the above key selection points, and the need to create a balanced team to contest all the events. An accumulative or average scoring / points system from all events shall NOT be used for selection. Youths riding events using dispensations will also have the results of those events considered.
Please note that after the first selection event for each discipline a long list will be drawn up.
Please note some financial contribution from those selected will be required.

Dorset Miles, Reliably Wet Perhaps?

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers cautious decision to postpone their 75 mile reliability trial left us with something of a dilemma, where do we ride today? Problem solved, we ride the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 75 mile reliability trial route of course. Three of us took advantage of a cold south easterly as we headed towards Wimborne, the wind would get its own back later. We knew the Cowgrove would be flooded, so we opted for the "off route" Badbury Rings road, a great road that unfortunately carries too much traffic. Fast down to Blandford, the temperature dropped as we headed into the “sticks”, ice on the edge of the road at Turnworth but it was melting. The village of Hammoon had been submerged midweek, the road closed; it was passable now and with some ease. St Johns Hill elevates the heart rate beyond level 3 as it climbs up to Shaftesbury, the town shrouded in a damp January mist. Dropping down now, it should be easy but the wind that was with us is now against us and it feels hard. Conversation ebbs away as the miles take their toll; only the judicious use of energy gels saves us from the man with the hammer, but only just. Roads flooded to the left & right at Coombe Bissett but thankfully not the road ahead. Rockbourne has the worst of the water but it was never deep. Damerham, Cranborne and back to Wimborne, talk of post-ride food sustained us “the best scrambled eggs I ever had”. We had found dry roads, enough for 90 miles; all three had Saturday mornings 2 hour Chaingang in the legs, a good weekend block of intensive & extensive endurance work, with the added bonus of dry feet (well almost).

ACREDITED MARSHALLS COURSE ON 19TH FEBRUARY AT FERNDOWN LEISURE CENTRE, PLACES STILL AVAILLABLE
British Cycling is now looking for volunteers in the South Region to become Accredited Marshals at road cycling events.
An Accredited Marshal is a trained road cycling marshal who is legally empowered to stop and hold traffic during a race using a new Stop Cycle Race Sign approved by the Department for Transport.

Getting Involved
British Cycling will provide you with the training in you need including an online module and a practical training session. After this you will be ready to start marshalling! Each marshal is expected to commit to a minimum of five races.
Why volunteer?
By volunteering as an Accredited Marshal you will be playing an important role securing the future of road racing in this country by helping us to make staging road races easier, more professional and, most importantly of all, safer for riders and other road users. You’ll also be helping to make sure that these great events continue happening in your local community and helping British Cycling to provide our next generation of cycling talent with the opportunity to race safely and regularly on Britain’s roads.

Jolliffe Joins Team Terminator!

Promising Junior Alex Jolliffe made his debut for his new team at the recent Calshot track meeting. The 15 year old has left Poole Wheelers to join Team Terminator with the specific aim of being selected for the Olympic Development programme. Alex impressed at the Bournemouth track league last summer being one of only a couple of riders to progress from the "B" to the "A" league. National outfit Team Terminators ethos is to support youth and junior riders through sponsorship /coaching/mentoring and race support. Former national track coach and world masters’ champion, Dave Le Grys, based in the east of the country, is the team principle with Bournemouth Track league organiser Adam D’Arcy Wykes responsible for the southern region.

Wykes has been working closely with Jolliffe and is impressed by the youngster’s work ethic “I am really pleased to be working with Alex he has great promise and probably more importantly works hard at his training. We are working on improving his strength and tactical awareness both on the track and in the youth circuit race series along with fitting it in around a very important school year and exams. He's a pleasure to coach with a great attitude.” Commented Wykes.

Jolliffe attends the Wey Valley School in Weymouth where he is studying GCSE Biology, Chemistry, Physics, PE, Maths, English, Geography and Spanish. It promises to be a busy year as he tries to emulate fellow student Rebecca Raybould who has been selected for the British Cycling talent team.
“All my training is done through Adam and we are working together in preparation for the track nationals, national road series, ice breaker youth series and youth omniums and some of the Omega circuit races. But the main goal is the track nationals.” Says Alex

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 75 Mile Reliability Trial Postponed!

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers have taken the decision to postpone this Sunday’s 75 mile reliability trial. The recent heavy rain has left parts of the route flooded, with some roads closed to traffic. The club plan to run the trial in two weeks’ time on Sunday 26th January. The 75 mile reliability trial was also postponed in 2013, when heavy snow and ice on the roads made conditions too dangerous.

Dighton & Jones Head Up Primera TT Squad!

Gary Dighton & Paul Jones will ride for Primera-sports. Com in 2014. The ex-Poole Wheelers pair will head up a small time trial- dedicated squad targeting local and national events. Ex-BBAR and former Olympian Dighton, has enjoyed something of a renaissance in the last few seasons and if Jones can recapture the form of a few years back, they will be a force to be reckoned with on the local time trial scene. Both Jones & Dighton will remain as second claim members of the Poole club but hope the shop support they will get from Primera will give them an edge in the coming season. Both looking lean and fit, it is obvious their winter training is going well and the recent bad weather is seen as an inconvenience rather than an excuse to stop riding. Dighton came down on some ice during an early morning session recently, apart from that it is business as usual with both doing a mixture of road and turbo work. They are looking to recruit at least one more rider ahead of the new season, with an eye on the National 3-up team time trial championships in Wales in June. Racing at all distances up to 100 miles, other targets include the National 50 mile championships and both riders are looking for “sub 50” 25 mile times. Coaching Sessions & Racing for Juniors in North Dorset!

Gillingham and Dist wheelers in North Dorset will be holding some coaching sessions again this year from April to Sept 2014 for youths and juniors so any youngsters wanting to get out on their bikes and ride in a safe, traffic free environment come and come along to Henstridge Air field. Dorset Miles, A Weather Window!

Will the rains never cease? Yes, for 3 hours according to the forecast! An earlier start to take advantage of the weather window, wet shoes from the day before made it hard: Stop moaning!! Hurn, Matchams, Avon Forest, Alderholt, Daggons & Cripplestyle. Talk of ice made us cautious of everything shiny on the road but it was just talk. Well nearly, the temperature dropped as we headed west to Verwood, crunching on the roadside at the Heavy horse centre. On to Woodlands, Horton & Farnham, the road was closed at Tollard Royal but not to us. Running flood water above the bottom bracket slowed us as stranded villagers shouted advice on hidden manhole covers & shortcuts, which was nice. The climb up towards Win Green was traffic free; the descent to Newtown is fast back to the main road. Tarrant Hinton, Tarrant Launceston, Tarrant Monkton, up the Cliff to Hogstock and across to Witchampton. It couldn’t last, two hours, forty minutes in and it starts to rain, light at first but rain jackets are soon required as we head to Chalbury & Wimborne Minster. Ham Lane, Longham, Parley Cross……….you know the rest. 3Hrs 57 min
