New Forest CC Boxing Day 10

Triathlete Tony Green (G A CYCLES) beat the floods and the opposition to win the New Forest CC Boxing Day 10 mile time trial. Green is training for the Great Britain age-group Duathlon trials in February and book-ended his 22:59 winning ride with two 5km runs. Cancelled last year due to problems with entries being lost in the post, this year’s seasonal event was also in doubt due to heavy flooding on the course. However a brief respite in the weather saw the waters recede allowing the race to go ahead.

Iain Palmer (Twickenham CC) riding only his second ever time trial was a surprised runner up with 23:09. Staying with relatives in the area, the Middlesex visitor is more accustomed to road racing but intends to ride against the clock more often in 2013. Gary Lock from the promoting club snatched third place from pre-race favourite, Bryce Dyer (VC ST Raphael), Lock’s 23:12 just 4 seconds quicker than Dyer.

Louise Dutch (Poole Wh) clocked 26:36 to take the ladies award; Dutch raced in a Santa Claus outfit and picked up a further prize for her fancy dress effort. Sam Humpheson & Charlotte Easton (Look Mum no Hands) powered round in 23:28 to win the tandem race. Flooding at Avon on Christmas day had put the event in doubt but the go- ahead was given after an early morning inspection. It’s good to see this popular local race back on the calendar after last year’s problems. Organiser Maggie Bracher and the New Forest CC were determined to see the event go ahead this year and should be congratulated for persevering, as the song goes “You don’t know what you’ve got till its gone”

Dorset Miles, Bear Cross Sunday Ride

The last Sunday in advent saw eight of us at Bear Cross for the pre-Christmas ride and the roads were already busy with the righteous. Straight to Gravel Hill, Ashington, Corfe Mullen, then descending Pardy’s it’s the usual route out to Lytchett Matravers, then on to East Morden, across the busy A35, Sandford and into Wareham. Jurassic Cabs sponsored the Purbeck Road Race back in August and it was one of their drivers who slowed down to tell us the causeway across to Stoborough was flooded, catching up with him at the traffic lights he started to talk about bacon sarnies! It was unexpected and all the nicer for that, other car drivers would speak to us today but it was mostly snarling & swearing. A detour onto the A351 and the seasonally decorated ghost bike in memory of the late Rob Jefferies reminded us of how lucky we are. Creech, East Creech, Cocknowle, Church Knowle, sunshine, blue sky and we were looking up at Corfe Castle. Straight across and up Rempstone Hill to the lookout and the golf course, the sweeping descent to Swanage is good fun and a hundred or so motorcyclists on the seafront gave us a wave as we headed towards Langton Matravers, it’s a good climb and a selection was made. Altogether again, we were now looking down on the castle, the drop down from Kingston is quick and we were soon back in the village looking up. Retracing to Cocknowle and all the way back to Holton Heath, then left to Organford and back to Lytchett, a rear wheel puncture at Stony Down was soon fixed before climbing back up Pardy’s. Oakley, Canford Magna, Bearwood, Kinson, Northbourne and the living nightmare that is Castle Lane. 4hrs 05

"SEND BOB" CAMPAIGN

HAMPSHIRE kidney transplant recipient and racing cyclist Bob Jolliffe needs your help to raise at least £2,600 to send him to the World Transplant Games in South Africa next July. Bob Jolliffe is a regular contributor to “Local Riders,Local Races” and is passionate about everything cycling!

Bob, along with many of his family members, suffers from Polycystic Kidney Disease. His grandfather died a very protracted death in the 1960s while his father, also a racing cyclist, underwent an unsuccessful transplant and then was a guinea pig for CAPD home dialysis in the early 1980s. Unfortunately he died after contracting septicaemia in 1984.

Bob, his younger brother and sister, however, have all been fortunate and benefitted from transplants. Bob received a life-saving transplant at Portsmouth’s Queen Alexandra Hospital three years ago. After spending two “debilitating and very restrictive” years on dialysis, says that now, “thanks to my donor and his family, to whom I owe an immense debt of gratitude, I feel better than I have done for many years”.

A keen cyclist since his teens, Bob, who is now 60, is competing in the World Games in order to promote the life-changing and life-saving benefits that come to desperately ill people through the gift of organ donation.

Bob is a clear example of the fact that ‘transplants transform lives’ and hopes his and his team mates’ activity will encourage people to sign up as potential donors and save lives.

Bob’s trip to the World Games is estimated to cost £2,600. This will have to be entirely self-funded and like many others, the unwaged former journalist, is finding times tough so needs your help.

Please dig deep and help Bob raise this money to send him on a once in a life time trip and promote one of the most miraculous achievements of modern medicine: organ transplants.

Full Course Description
START at first lamp post south of entrance to Wellworthy’s factory at Ringwood on B3347 (SU153044). Proceed south via Bisterne and Avon to Sopley one-way system (5.2 m). Turn right over bridge at the Woolpack and retrace to Ringwood via Avon and Bisterne to FINISH at drain, 10 yds south of junction with Hampshire Hatches Lane at Moortown Green (SU153038). Observers may be in attendance along the course. (No times will be given to riders at the finish)

Safety Instructions
Riders must:
• Not make U-turns in the vicinity of the Start or Finish
• Not warm up on the course
• Not stop at the finish, but continue to the event Headquarters
• Not cut corner at Sopley one-way system on first right turn as the road is two-way at this point
• Take extra care:
From start to Moortown lane – busy with houses and side roads, busy garage on left, finish on right
Avon Tyrrell Farm – sharp bend with possible gravel
Avon Causeway – beware of traffic stopping to turn right or emerging onto course
Any rider observed riding in a manner which may jeopardise his/her own safety, the safety of others or the future of the Sport, will be disqualified and reported to the South District Council of Cycling Time Trials.

Luke Gray's Cyclo-Cross Diary

December 16th was the 5th round of the British National Trophy series at Shrewsbury. A few days prior to the race there had been a lot of rain, but on the day there was even sun. The temperature was fairly warm for this time of year so there was no chance of the course hardening up, instead the mud dried and became sticky and very slippery and draggy. After just two practise laps of the course my bike was pretty clogged with mud and grass. The course was dead flat apart from a little hump near the start finish which were used quite rigorously, woods also made up a large part of the lap which was to my liking.

With my race starting at 14:30 there is always so much waiting around and killing time to do, although my dad was busy taking large quantities of water, brushes, bucket and a jet washer to the pits, plus my other Trek cross bikes number 2 and 3 which were inconveniently a very long way away.

There were a few new faces for this round, two of GB's top mountain bikers, Kenta Gallagher and Grant Ferguson. Also Ian Bibby who was the Senior National Cyclocross Champion a few years back.
I had a good start sitting in 2nd place down the start straight then shortly after the start came a set of blanks, which Kenta Gallagher who was riding right in front of me decided to bunnyhop them and got them wrong, I also bunnyhop them but with him laying in the track I didn't have anywhere to go but lay in the track as well. At least I did'nt stuff my face in the dirt like him, but I did lose some vital time as everyone is racing very rapid on the first lap trying to move up and gain places.

Over the course of the first few laps I lost a fair few places till time gaps appeared between riders then I just settled in and not much happened, apart from a whole lot of bike changes. I had to pit for a clean bike twice every lap, there was so much mud and grass. Not changing slows you down as well as potentially causing mechanical failures like broken rear mechs. My Dad said as soon as he had jet washed a bike I came straight in for a quick change with another muddy one. He said he went through over 80 litres of water and ran out on my last lap.

I finished in 17th place which was'nt a good result and I wasn't happy with it. I liked the course, because it was slippery, so it was good fun to ride but the draggy mud wasn't to my liking when you have to race in it.

My next race is at Essen in Belgium, a round of the Bpost Bank Troffee series. This particular race last year was the muddiest race I had ever done, but the course wasn't much cop either. So I've be very busy with cleaning and washing clothing and equipment ready for leaving in the next few days. I'll also be spending Christmas in Belgium (for the second year running) but my parents are making the trip over to spend Christmas in Belgium with me, but to also help me out at the Boxing day World Cup in Zolder, Belgium.

Dorset Miles, Bear Cross Sunday Ride!

Only five today, a very disappointing turn out on a benign winter’s day, that had “4 hours” written all over it. For those with ambition next season, the foundations are laid now. A weeks training before Christmas is worth two weeks after, the inevitable hangover of January will see to that. Lecture over, the small knot of riders dropped down to Longham and out to Canford Bottom, briefly on the A31 before left to Broom Hill, God’s Blessing Green and on to Horton. Across the A354 and we were already four, Farnham and Tollard Royal, the climb up to Win Green is steepest at the bottom and drags on in an obvious sort of way. With every pedal crank the Cranborne Chase unfolds before us, the view is honestly earn’t, on a day like today why would you want to be anywhere else? Dropping down to Ludwell we are now just two, left to Charlton then up to Shaftesbury. We thread our way through the side roads to Bimport; the saxon hill-top town is holding its Christmas fayre. The descent of St Johns hill is steep & fast, the glass is half full today for sure but not for long. Stour Row, a rear wheel puncture, a small piece of wire is the culprit. Somehow we manage to break both pumps, there was talk of a credit card digging us out but some compressed air supplied by two guys on fixed wheels came to the rescue. On to Todber with our new best friends, then Manston, Fontmell Parva, Child Okeford and Stourpaine. Saying our goodbyes we turn right across the river and the climb out of Durweston then fast down to Bryanston. Langton Long, the Cowgrove & Wimborne, blah,blah,blah,you know the drill. 4hrs 17

Tour de France returns to UK

Tour de France 2014: Grand Départ in Yorkshire, London to host a stage finish

The organisers of the Tour de France are pleased to announce that the Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2014 will take place in the United Kingdom in the county of Yorkshire, before heading to London for a stage finish. After an outstanding 2012 for British cycling, marked by the historical victory of Bradley Wiggins on the Tour de France, the United Kingdom will again hold pride of place in 2014. The Grand Départ of the 101st edition of the Tour will take place on 5th July in Leeds in the county of Yorkshire.

Seven years after the Grand Départ of the Tour de France 2007 and two years after the latest Olympic Games, London will host the last stage on British soil, before the pack returns to mainland Europe. The details of this Grand Départ and the stages it will include will be revealed at a press conference that will take place on Thursday 17th January 2013, in two phases, in both Leeds and Paris.

A very successful and friendly French amateur team is looking for a good young English road rider to complete their squad for the 2013 season. The team is “Le Velo Club de Octeville-Cherbourg” and is based in Normandy on the channel coast so will be easy to get to and from on the ferries between Cherbourg and Poole/ Portsmouth.
