British Age Group Sprint Triathlon Championships: Mosley Misses out!

750M/20KM/5KM
Two months after winning the British duathlon championship, Phil Mosley (B’mth Cycleworks/Scott/ClifBar) couldn’t repeat his success this time around. A poor swim left him 95 seconds behind the leaders, and although he posted the day’s fastest bike and run splits he still finished 25 seconds behind first placed Roger Witz Barnes. His time of 58:31 was fast enough to earn him the title of British champion in the 35-39 age category. He wasn’t the only local medallist either. Despite still feeling tired from winning a gold medal at the European age group triathlon championships in Israel recently, Lymington Tri Club’s Barbara Walton was still fast enough to clinch a bronze medal in the 60 to 64 category. Amazingly, her time was still four minutes faster than she did two years ago at the same race (when she was only 61!). Keith Mahon from Zoom Tri also won a silver medal in the 50 to 54 category, which he can add to his ever growing list of triathlon achievements. All the more impressive is that he only started the sport a few years ago, and he’s now competing against several former pro’s in his age group. Another talented newcomer to the sport is Tony Rendall, who finished 18th in the 35 to 39 age group in only his second year in the sport.

Barbara Walton: 1:24:47
Phil Mosley: 58:31
Keith Mahon: 1:04:17
Tony Rendall: 1:04:53

Meanwhile local sensation, Richard Horton (Primera) got his triathlon career off to a winning start. Having become European Junior Duathlon champion in just two races, Horton was an emphatic winner of the Swanage Triathlon, finishing 10 minutes clear of the opposition. Horton lead from the front in the 750M Swim/20km Cycle/5km run in the Purbecks.

1, Richard Horton 1.11.54
2, Oliver Noakes 1.22.57
3, Steve Birtwistle 1.23.40

Dambuster Duathlon/British age-group Championships,Title for Mosley

Triathlete Phil Mosley(Scott/Cliff/Specialized) "ticks a box" as he wins his first target of the year. Mosley is in good shape and is looking forward to 70.3 Ironman races in Vienna & Antwerp later in the summer. Phil celebrated his win with a take-away curry before penning this report, (more pics to come).....

This year’s Dambuster Duathlon, held at Rutland Water, hosted the British age-group Duathlon Championships and was a qualifier for September’s World Championships in Nancy, France.

With so much to fight for, the 800-strong field boasted strength in depth. In the men’s race, the first 10km run was completed in 32:32 by early leaders Richard Anderson and last year’s British Champion Julian Lings, while the first 70 runners all completed the accurate 10km course in less than 36 minutes. Hot on the leaders’ heels were eventual winner Phil Mosley in 32:34 and last year’s Dambuster duathlon winner Hugh Mackenzie in 33:08.

The leaders raced into transition with Mosley the first to emerge with his bike, ready to tackle the 42km undulating and wind-swept bike leg that included the infamous Rutland Ripple – a long straight road with several steep hills. Lings, Mackenzie and Richard Anderson were close behind but over the next hour Mosley gradually built a two-minute lead, giving him a winning margin going into the final 5km run. Unbeknown to them, Paul Carroll who started later in the 40-45 wave, was also having a good race. He completed the first run in 32:41 and produced a strong bike and second run to clinch second place overall and an age-group gold medal, while Hugh Mackenzie held onto third place.

The women’s field was 127-strong, but the podium places were even more closely fought. After two hours and eleven minutes, just four-seconds separated eventual winner Anna Turvey from runner-up Amy Forshaw. Turvey owed her eventual victory to her cycle time-trial prowess, after the initial 10k run left her over two-minutes adrift of early leaders Louise Bardsley (36:50) and Esther Rodriguez (36:48). During the 42km cycle, she put almost three minutes into the next faster rider, giving her a small lead going into the final run. A fast run from Forshaw meant she had soon closed the gap though, and the finishing line came just in the nick of time for Turvey to claim an excellent victory, while Louise Bardsley took third spot.

More Locals in the action!
In the face of some fierce competition Keith Mahon, of Branksome, won the bronze medal in the 50-54 age category and finished an impressive 53rd overall. It was over two minutes faster than he managed at the same race last year, despite the course being lengthened slightly. Having won a gold medal in the sprint triathlon World Championships in 2011, Mahon looks in good shape for 2012. Chris Weeks from Bournemouth also gave a strong performance in the 20-24 age category, finishing 7th (67th overall). He completed the first 10km run in just 35:13 and produced a strong ride that ranked him in the top ten percent.

Big Adventure Store Chilly Duathlon

Bournemouth –based triathlete Phil Mosley (Cliff Bar/Scott/Specialized) put his winter training to the test at Castle Coombe. Mosley has enjoyed a good winter and was using this early season “pipe opener” to try out his fitness ahead of somewhat bigger challenges…………………..
The Castle Combe circuit in Wiltshire has seen the likes of Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna grace its two-mile track, but this weekend it was duathlete's who set lap records at The Big Adventure Store Chilly Duathlon. 250 competitors completed a two mile run, a 10 mile cycle and another two mile run, all met with unseasonably warm conditions for February. For many, it was an early season sharpener for the British age-group Duathlon Championships in mid-March, while others used it as an opportunity to see if their winter training had paid off.

The race began at a furious pace, with junior international triathletes Iestyn Harrett and Liam Lloyd scorching around the first 2-mile run in just nine minutes and 52 seconds. Hot on their heels were Welsh student Alex Matchett, age-group silver medal winning triathlete Simon Thornton and ex-GB elite duathlete Phil Mosley.

The two young leaders were soon overhauled on the bike, as Mosley powered his way to the front. Not far behind him were Matchett and Thornton, with Lee Rankin also making up good time with a rapid ride.

By the end of the bike Mosley had established a lead of 40-seconds, which he extended during the second run, breaking the tape in 42 minutes and 13 seconds to win by over a minute. Behind him, a close fought battle was raging as Matchett eventually took second, just four-seconds ahead of Thornton, while Lee Rankin held onto fourth.

The women’s field was also hotly contested, with age-group triathlon World Champion Kate Robson, British age-group triathlon champion Louise Bardsley and elite international duathlete Michelle Parsons all going head to head. Robson set the pace on the first run with an impressive 10:59. Bardsley wasn’t far behind, while bike-specialist Parsons came in almost a minute back from the leader. It didn’t take Parsons long to make up the deficit on the bike, clocking 22 minutes and 49 seconds for the 10-miles. Ultimately it wasn’t enough. A fast-running Robson re-caught Parsons after a mile and turned it into victory by half a minute, while another quick run from Bardlsey saw her just miss out on second place. After the fireworks at Castle Combe, all eyes will turn to Rutland on 10th March, where the Dambuster Duathlon plays host to the British Championships.

After the race the race Mosley spoke to "E D" about his win and plans for the season
“It was nice to win, but I'm not getting carried away. It felt really hard from beginning to end. I spent the whole race thinking "if I ever enter a short race like this again, please shoot me first". In my head I thought everyone was much closer behind me and I didn't realise I had it in the bag until about three minutes from the end, so there was no let up. My target was to win the race in a time that indicated I'd had a good winter. There's still work to be done, but I was happy with the outcome. My target races this year are the British Duathlon championships on 10th March, and then several Ironman 70.3 triathlons throughout the summer including Vienna and Antwerp. I'll also do some local cycle time trials to get in good shape for the bike.”
