Kenny Named in London 2012 Squad!

Dorset’s Darren Kenny has been named in the 18 strong Great Britain Squad for the London Paralympic games in September. Kenny has won 8 medals, 6 gold & 2 silver, across 2 games. Kenny, from Verwood will be riding the Individual Pursuit, team sprint and the 1km time trial. The squad also features Sarah & Barney Storey. Sarah won medals on both the road and track in Beijing and is a strong favourite to repeat her success in London. Also selected is Sarah’ husband Barney Storey. Originally from Corfe Mullen and still a member of Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers, Barney rides as a Tandem Pilot for visually impaired stoker Neil Fachie. Great Britain topped the medal table in Beijing, winning 20 cycling medals and are still the leading nation on the track. Racing at the Olympic Park Velodrome takes place from 30 August-2 September followed by the road events at Brands Hatch from 5-8 September

Five times Paralympic gold medallists Jody Cundy and World Champion Mark Colbourne are amongst an 18-strong Para-Cycling team announced today by the British Paralympic Association (BPA) as competing at London 2012.
The team who will feature Paralympic multi gold medallists Sarah Storey, Darren Kenny and Aileen McGlynn and Beijing gold medallists David Stone and Rachel Morris is also bolstered by new talent including 2012 World Championships gold medallist Mark Colbourne and 2011 World Road and 2012 World Track Championships bronze medallist Shaun McKeown.
Speaking today, Jody said: "I feel honoured to be selected for my fifth Paralympics which ultimately is going to be the most important and special as it is on home soil. I can’t wait to defend my Paralympic titles and race in front of a partisan crowd as part of the strongest team that ParalympicsGB has ever sent to a Paralympic Games. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported me along the way and I look forward to your continued support. Bring on London!"


Mark commented: “I feel hugely honoured and proud to be selected for my first Paralympic Games. It has been an incredible journey for me, from the hospital bed to now making the team, and I have a lot of people to thank for their support. Being selected feels amazing but I can’t wait to compete in front of a home crowd in London.”
The Para-Cycling team brought home 20 medals from Beijing to finish top of their sport’s medal table, and the sport has brought home multiple international medals from road and track since 2008, so Paralympic selectors are confident that the team will perform once again when they take to the boards at the Olympic Park is just over 60 days’ time.

UCI Para-Cycling Road World Cup, Segovia, Spain

Great Britain got off to a winning start on day 1 of the UCI World cup event in Spain. Tandem pairing Lora Turnham and pilot Fiona Duncan won gold in the Women’s B time trial. David Stone took the Men’s T2 test and Mark Colbourne & Karen Darke added silver in the C5 and Women's H2 races. Turnham & Duncan clocked 27.47 for the rolling 21KM course, 3 secs quicker than the Irish pair, Catherine Walsh & Francine Meehan. Robbie Weldon & Lynn Bessette took the bronze for Canada with 28.01. Both British girls agreed it was “very hot and windy” but they had a race strategy and they “stuck to it.” The G B team went into the event with tired legs from an intensive block of training, so there is definitely more to come. Day’s 2 & 3 of the Segovia World Cup will feature the road racing with Brits in action on both days. More to come……..

Great Britain Para-Cycling Team: In Pursuit of Glory

Glory in sport always comes at a price and that price, especially in cycling, equates to hard work. Any team of individuals that might dream of medals and podiums must be prepared to pay the price. The Great Britain Para-Cycling squad turned up at the Newport Velodrome, ready to settle the bill on their way to the World Championships.

The fourteen rider team selected for the track championships in Los Angeles in February put in a full shift every day of the four day camp. High intensity intervals, standing starts, flying 200s were punctuated by much needed recovery intervals.

Performance analysis and blood lactate testing provided immediate feedback to the coaches.

When they were not on the track they were on the road, 2 hour rides, sometimes on TT bikes doing efforts “down on the ski’s!” Evenings were spent relaxing, some food, maybe a massage, listen to a CD, always with the feet up.

Another 4 days await the squad next week but there will be no weekend off, weights, road work and more track beckon. All will have left their sweat on the ground. Hunger, Desire, Application, to hurt & to hurt again, may allow the best to dream of glory; after all they have paid for it. Beyond Los Angeles, the London Paralympic games are calling, distraction is just a photo-call away, focus is key!

The World Para-Cycling Track Championships will be held at the Home Depot Centre Velodrome from 9-12 February. The Home Depot Centre Velodrome, a national training centre for USA Cycling, is the only permanent indoor track of international standard in North America. The 250 meter track with inclines of 45 degrees at both ends has 2450 seats

GB Para-Cycling, Track Camp

Eight days of intensive track training will put the finishing touches to Para-Cycling GB’s preparations for the world championships. The fourteen rider squad are at the Newport Velodrome in Wales before heading to Los Angeles, California for the championships. A mixture of high intensity intervals, motor pacing and steady road work will keep the squad busy. Video analysis and physiological testing will provide vital data for the coaches to work with. The London Paralympic games are less than 200 days away and media interest in the athletes is all in a day’s work. It promises to be a busy year for the GB Para-cycling team on and off the bike. However, the prospect of winning medals on home soil will no doubt keep them focussed! More to Come
