Mark Colbourne, GB Paracyclist Looks forward to London 2012

The first week in July saw all the GB Para-cycling team members who had been selected for the 2012 London Paralympics, travel to and stay at the St Pierre & Country Club in Chepstow for the week, while we trained at the National Velodrome in Newport. This hotel will be our venue for our holding camp before the transition up to London one week before the games.

The first week of my training on the track was a small shock to my system, having had only two weeks back on the track in Manchester after my training abroad and now with my legs finding their power again, the efforts on the track were going to be increased every day to maximise my improvements for London over the next two weeks.

On the Sunday 8th July, fellow Para-cyclist and Paralympic Gold medallist Jody Cundy MBE and I were invited to take part in a SKY ride for the public at the Velodrome in Newport as part of the celebrations of 50 days to go before the start of the 2012 London Paralympics. The day was organised to invite the public to take part in safe cycling with trained staff on the roads around Newport. Jody and I had a fab time and made lots of new cycling friends, who also enjoyed their cycling experiences around the coastline roads in the sun.

My second week of track training in Newport saw me and my legs finally start to see some progress. The first week was more like a baptism of fire for me trying to achieve some really fast times on the boards, as well as get used to training at maximum on every effort. The week session was broken up with a 3 hour road ride with two of the team members who really enjoyed the Welsh countryside, apart from the rain which was warm but very wet!

While I was on the camp in Newport, I had the pleasure of being interviewed over the telephone by Stuart Lieberman from the International Paralympic Committee. The IPC (www.paralympic.org) oversee all Paralympic sports across the globe, so it was my pleasure to share my epic life changing story with Stuart and to explain just how my life has changed since becoming a Para-cyclist and also a Paralympic hopeful. I had to explain who “Dewi the Dragon” was and how he was going to help me in London, as my Paralympic mascot.

On 13th July, my-self and the team went to the Crown Plaza Hotel in Central London to have our official suit fitting for the 2012 London Paralympic Games, supplied by retailer Next. It was a brilliant experience for me and everyone who attended, as this was the first time we all had the chance to mingle with our fellow ParalympicsGB athletes from all the other sports who are going to compete in London in August and September.

The journey back to Manchester that night was very slow and certainly a long one, having taken us 6 hours to drive back, as the traffic was bedlam. The next day I was keen to get back on my bike and felt really good on my 2 hour road ride on my TT bike, which was thankfully spent in the sunshine.

Monday 16th July saw the start of my 6 week double training sessions on the track, with me having to do a road ride in the morning, then a full on track session in the afternoon, plus, gym twice a week. I do honestly enjoy these sessions; it’s just a case of working hard and then sleeping through the tiredness before the benefits are seen a few weeks later.

Mid July, I was invited by 2012 London Paralympic partner Deloitte, to a private function to share my experience and my life changing story with some of their young clients in Manchester. Deloitte who is the professional services supporter for both of the London 2012 games and who is among the country’s leading professional services firms, providing audit, tax, consulting and corporate finance services. My talk went really well and I had the pleasure of holding a 2012 Olympic torch, it felt rather serial to actually be holding a real one, however, the evening was a great success and enjoyed by all. On times I still have to pinch myself to realise that I am actually doing what I am doing for my country and it was my pleasure to talk and network with such a fabulous group of professionals.

My last week of training in July saw my track sessions increased and also my time spent on the TT bike. This extra amount of training helps me to overload my body before I start my final few weeks of preparation, for the biggest challenge of my Para-cycling career at the 2012 London Paralympics.

The end of July saw my-self and fellow GB Para-cycling team member Jody Cundy MBE, attend a BBC radio interview called “world have your say” at the Manchester National Velodrome. The interview was live across the World and covered the global excitement that the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics had created. The interview went really well and especially after Bradley Wiggins had just won the Tour De France two days previous, so everyone was on a GB high.

As the biggest sporting event on the planet began at the end of July, the 2012 London Olympic fever hit the UK with style. We saw hundreds of millions of people across the globe watch the opening ceremony in awe and with only 4 weeks to go before the 2012 London Paralympics start, the whole of the UK will be behind every one of our ParalympicsGB athletes.

I am so excited to be a GB Para-cyclist competing at a home Paralympic Games, knowing that very soon I will not only be racing on the same track as Sir Chris Hoy, but with 6500 screaming fans in the stands. This is something that really does get me fired up to do well. I wish all Team GB and ParalympicsGB athletes all the very best for the Games and make Britain proud by doing your absolute best!

Local Riders,Local Races

Darren Kenny OBE, retained his 1 KM time trial title on day 3 at the world championships in Los Angeles. Verwood- based Kenny clocked 1:12.496 in his four lap effort, more than a second faster than David Nicholas (Australia). Great Britain team mate Shaun McKeown also made the podium, picking up the bronze medal. Kenny had bounced back well after the disappointment of losing his 3km pursuit title to Nicholas on day 2. The multiple world & Paralympic champion had been caught by the Australian in the final ride and had to settle for silver. Another Silver followed in the team sprint final as Kenny, along with Sarah Storey and Jody Cundy lost out to the Chinese trio. Meanwhile Barney Storey had to settle for silver for the second consecutive year in the tandem kilo. Storey and visually impaired stoker Neil Fachie came agonisingly close to gold, finishing just 0.0099 seconds behind teammates Anthony Kappes & Craig MacLean. Storey and Fachie were on course for a final showdown with their GB rivals after beating Canada in the quarter finals. However the Corfe Mullen rider was taken ill and had to withdraw from the semi-final with the Netherlands. Kappes & Maclean went on to win the title comfortably beating the Dutch pairing 2-0.Once again GB topped the medal table but it had been a challenging week for the whole squad. The jet lag from the long flight hung around longer than expected. Shaun McKeown spent most of one night in the hospital after suffering an allergic reaction to something he ate.

Rising star, Mark Colbournes father had passed away on the opening day of the championships. His gold medal winning ride in the C1 pursuit was fuelled by emotion. Barney Storeys illness and subsequent withdrawal from the tandem sprint undoubtedly cost him & Neil Fachie a medal. Instead of riding against the Netherlands in the semi-final, Storey was forced to return to the team hotel. “That’s bike racing” was his disappointed response. Perhaps this had been on Sarah Storeys mind as the sprint team surrendered their world title to the Chinese.

Lead Coach Chris Furber offered no excuses however and remains positive, Furber told “E D” “I’m satisfied with the performance at the Worlds, to be in gold or silver medal position in 14 events puts us in a great place for the games. The next month is about reviewing performance and formulating detailed plans for the run-in to London." After a few days rest for the squad thoughts will turn to the road. An endurance camp in Majorca in March will be followed by world cup events in Italy and Spain. The track events at the Paralympic games will be held in the Velodrome at the Olympic park, while the road events will take place at Brands Hatch.

Perfs Pedal Race

Chris Opie (Team UK Youth) won the season opening, Perfs Pedal race on Portsdown Hill. The race went ahead, although reduced from 5 laps to four, after the VC ST Raphael organising team had worked hard to clear ice from the course.
Team UK Youth had controlled the race from the start, strength in numbers and a race plan ensured no one was allowed to escape the bunch.Doug Dewey(Terra Footwear-Bicycle line)lead a small group clear on the final climb before Opie attacked to take a comfortable win.

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 100 mile Reliability Trial
Bournemouth Jubilee Wheeler, Mike Walsh, organiser of the clubs hugely successful reliability trial series reports on the 100 mile event. The four tourist trials across the winter months have proved very popular.
"54 riders started, 27 on the 100 in 8 and also 27 on the 100 km. 24 finished the 100 in 8 and 26 the 100 km.
A fantastic finish ratio. The fastest group finished in just over 6 hours whereas there was a couple on the 100 km who returned just before 4 p.m. Although a cold start to the day the roads were dry and any water draining from the fields could be identified and thus the ice patches avoided. The weather became less cold through the day and the riders experienced minimal wind. All riders seemed happy upon their return and tucked into the tea and cakes provided under the guidance of Aimée Barber. (Other helpers were Dave Langley, Mike and Jo Gordon, Reg Haskins, Aimée, Matt, Sue [Barber family], Jacky and Clive). I had a large glass of wine in the evening."

GB Para-Cycling, Track Camp

Eight days of intensive track training will put the finishing touches to Para-Cycling GB’s preparations for the world championships. The fourteen rider squad are at the Newport Velodrome in Wales before heading to Los Angeles, California for the championships. A mixture of high intensity intervals, motor pacing and steady road work will keep the squad busy. Video analysis and physiological testing will provide vital data for the coaches to work with. The London Paralympic games are less than 200 days away and media interest in the athletes is all in a day’s work. It promises to be a busy year for the GB Para-cycling team on and off the bike. However, the prospect of winning medals on home soil will no doubt keep them focussed! More to Come

Belgium Para Cycling Open 2011, Oupeye, Provence De Liege

A weekend of racing in Belgium saw the Great Britain Para-Cycling team come away with some valuable qualification points for London 2012. Oupeye, near Liege is in the French speaking part of the country but the Belgian Para-Cycling Open was a typically Flemish affair. Rutted roads, tight, unswept corners, mud and of course, rain. Race Officials appear and set up barriers, PA system, signage and start ramp, all within an hour of the start. Saturday’s 7.5 KM time trial was on a rough, twisting circuit, still holding surface water from the torrential rains that had swept across the country on Thursday. The Great Britain squad was especially cautious, world champion David Stone had crashed heavily whilst training on the course the previous day. Stone suffered cuts and bruises and after a visit to the Hospital decided to withdraw from the event. The patched up trike rider flew home early but expects to be back in training this week. Despite their cautious approach the GB team still delivered.

Shaun Mckeown clocked 12.58 to win the MC3 category, Simon Price won the MC2 with a 13.25 and Crystal Lane posted a 14.25 time to win the women’s C5 category. Mark Colbourne clocked 14.02 for first place in the men’s C1 Class. Price, Lane & Colbourne are relatively new to the squad and lack race experience.

However, all three performed well in testing conditions. Hand Cyclist, Karen Darke recorded 19.23 for a comfortable win in the HC2 category.

The following day’s road race was based on an industrial estate, it may have lacked glamour but it did produce some exciting racing. The 2.6 mile circuit included a couple of uphill drags, steep enough to force a selection and heavy rain in the morning had left the roads “greasy”. Thankfully the rain had stopped by the time racing got underway and once again the Great Britain team shone. Crystal Lane rode unchallenged to win the women’s C5 title, the combined time of TT & Road Race deciding the result.

Lane looks a real talent, she lacks experience but that will come. Simon Price rode strongly and always looked in control of the small breakaway he had helped establish. Price clipped away in the finale to win alone.

Shaun Mckeown rode a clever, tactical race. Protecting his lead from the time trial, Mckeown kept a watchful eye on his rivals, riding down any who tried to get away. Mark Colbourne came second in the C1 category road race, Colbourne, like Lane, is on a steep learning curve and responded well to the competition.

Tandem Pair Lora Turnham & Pilot Louise Haston struggled to get on terms after Haston unclipped her pedal on the start line. The pair chased hard but never made contact with the fast moving bunch. Their disappointment, after a lonely race, clearly showed how much it mattered.

Hand Cyclist Karen Darke built on her lead in the TT, to win her race and the overall. Strong arms and gritty determination is the key.

Coach, Jayne Ellis said “It was a good solid performance from all the squad and we are now looking forward to the final preparations for the world championships”. Road coach, Tom Stanton agreed with Ellis, “We had good results on a challenging course and with a little over two weeks to go to before the Para-Cycling World Championships in Roskilde. We can now focus on the final preparation to make sure everyone is in the best possible form"

The nine rider squad had traveled to Belgium from a Paralympic simulation camp in Bath. Designed to give athletes a foretaste of life in the London Paralympic village, the camp included all the support and back up systems that competitors will find at the London games.

No detail was left out, right down to a mock up of the accommodation facilities including a “2012” themed duvet! The simulation camp also served as a mini training camp for the Para-Cycling team, ahead of the Word Championships in Roskilde, Denmark next month.
