National Trophy Cyclo-Cross Round 3

Belgium visitor Floris de Tier (Baboco) soloed to victory, after dominating round 3 of the National Trophy Cyclo-Cross Series at Southampton. De Tier attacked early in the race and established a solid lead that was never threatened.

Jelle Brackman (Van de Vurst CT) and Xandro Meurisse (Baboco) made it a 1-2-3 for the Belgium’s as they handed out a lesson in Cyclo-Cross riding.

Paul Oldham (Hope RT) extended his lead in the series, finishing 4th ahead of Jody Crawford (Hargroves Cycles). Oldham & Crawford had played cat & mouse for much of the race before the Hope RT man opened a gap that Crawford would not close.

Steve James (Hargroves Cycles) rolled a tub while well placed and had to run for nearly a lap to change a wheel in the pits. Wessex League leader Mike Cotty (Wheelbase/ Cannondale) put in a strong ride to finish in the top ten.

The Southampton Sports Centre course offered mostly grass track with a wooded section and some plank obstacles, inviting riders to show off their technique.

The unseasonably warm weather had some of the small crowd in short sleeves as they saw newly crowned World Junior Road Champion Lucy Garner (Motorpoint) win the Women’s race. Garner proved too strong for Adele Carter (WXC MTB) & Hannah Payton (Kinesis Morvelo Project) after the trio had taken the race by the scruff!
