Calvert Leads Locals at National Youth Omnium!

Charley Calvert (Bournemouth Arrow) won silver at the National Youth Omnium Track Championships at Welwyn at the weekend. Calvert finished ahead of local rival Ali Fielding in the Under 14 Boys category. Alex Jolliffe (Team Terminator) came 6th in the Under 16 Boys & Rebecca Raybould finished 4th in the Under 16 Girls. These four, along with Lucy Edmunds & Molly Haycock (Bournemouth Arrow) & Rebecca Hurst (Poole Wheelers) have benefitted hugely from easy access to the Bournemouth Track and the successful youth policies of both the Poole Wheelers and the Bournemouth Arrow Cycling Club. Stars of the future perhaps?

August Bank Holiday Racing on Jersey

Event Press Release
Following on from the hugely successful Tour Series finale held in Jersey the Island once again plays host to its annual BCF races held over the August bank holiday weekend. The event now in its 5th year has grown and become very popular due to its picturesque setting and friendly racing. The event this year is held on the August bank holiday weekend and features three days of racing with the first event on Saturday 23rd being a circuit race on the islands closed one mile Race circuit. Sunday 24th is the prestigious Town Crit event held in the Capital of the Island, St Helier. Previous winners include Graham Briggs, Ian Bibby and Greg Mansel along with Lucy Garner and Hannah Walker winning previous women’s race. Monday 25th is the final event and is a demanding 75 mile RR held on the west of the Island.

The events boast very good prize money and each day not only is there a National B race but also a Regional B for 3rd and 4th Category riders and a ladies event. The Island also guarantees great weather and hospitality so definitely worth the travel.

Reedy Wins Primera Purbeck Road Race!

Kamden Reedy (Dymag T-1-D) won the Primera Purbeck road race, dropping his two breakaway companions on the penultimate climb of East Creech hill above Poole Harbour. Chris Courage (Bournemouth Jubilee Wh) had dangled off the front on the first lap and primes at the finish line of each lap helped split the race early doors, with riders keen to earn a tenner. Greg Lancaster(VC Bristol/Webbs of Warmley)also enjoyed some air off the front but it was just an appetiser for the main to come. Reedy attacked on the third of eight 5 mile laps of the Furzebrook circuit, pulling away with Tim O’Rourke (Twickenham CC), Paul Double (Velo Club Venta) & Carl Silver (Bournemouth Jubilee). Silver quickly dropped back but the other three pressed on with what turned out to be the race winning move.

A 15 second gap on lap 3 grew to 50 seconds by lap 5 as the bunch failed to mount an effective chase. By the sixth passage of East Creech the trio had 1:15 and were cleaning up the primes between them. Eighteen year old Double was feeling the pace, O’Rourke gave him a helping push on the lower slopes and in doing so dropped his chain and it was race over for the good Samaritan! Double also ended his day in the sun, falling back to the tiring bunch. Bristol-based Reedy, an aerospace engineer from Arizona had been the strongest in the break and enjoyed a solitary last lap before celebrating across the line, 1:23 clear. He likes the more aggressive racing this side of the pond but is not so keen on the “small roads” Oliver Yates (RN &RM CA) clipped off the front on the hill to take second with Jordan Frampton (Primera-UK Biking) winning the sprint for third.

The Primera sponsored race was the first of two races on the tough Furzebrook circuit, the second date in September to be confirmed.

13 Entries on womens, 11 men, 2 DNS in both events.
The fourth in national Womens Track Omnium series 2014. With the top 3 points holders in attendance, Ellie Coster cat 2 ahead of the Elite cat Janet Birkmyre and third position cat 2 Flora Gillies. Points from today carry through to the August Reading event and final at Halesowen on 17th August. T.T.S began proceedings for the seeding in sprints. Ellie C. Bush Healthcare R.T South Wales making the 1st with a 37.71 500 metre 2 lap held start.
8 km. points race. Some early sprints showed Molly Haycock picking up points here in a characteristically varied speed race. Half way through number Madeline Moore of VC St Raphael attacked hard to clinch maximum points for gaining a lap, wherefter there was also an attack by Joe Macrae with a kilo to go, she led out the field to finish 5th , on the finish lap Molly Haycock fronted the bunch until the experience of Ellie Coster and Janet Birkmyre swept up the remaining points. 1st Madeline Moore 2nd Ellie Coster 3rd Janet Birkmyre.
500 Metre sprints next for the women, again superbly paced by Ellie Coster for the first overall. With two races of 4 in a group, and one of 5 riders, not much chance of any match sprint play showed the strongest sprinters dominate these.
Womens pursuits. Niki Kovacs won these 8 lap pursuits, in a time of 2.42.18.
Womens final race. 8 K.M scratch. A tactical event with the experience of the seniors showing through right til the end. Joe Macrae putting in a 12 lap attack on her own out front, before being caught half way point where the race lulled into a steady bunch. With 3 km to go, all riders together Rebecca Hurst doing well to get back in the bunch for a time. The final 2 laps yielded the finale with a tight shoulder to shoulder home straight dash between Ellie Coster, Janet Birkmyre and Madeline Moore and finishing in that order Ellie just a wheel up on second placed Janet.

First two heats in the Derny event, 40 laps with an even split of 5 riders and pacers. A close bunched race, at half way Brendan Drewett paced by the London expert Tony Hibbert took the lead for 10 laps until during a tight last Kilo James Holland leader paced by Graham Bristow, pipped the rest to finish first.
Second Heat, another 5 riders and pacers in a very different race from the first, pairs spread out early on the 40 laps, big gaps opening up before, after 30 laps Tony Hibbert cranked up the pace and continually drilled Oliver Moors to take a clean win.
Minor Final for the Derny paced runners up.80- laps. An early break by Joe Gorman for 10 must have burnt him out as he and Glenn Obrien abandoned this in the 25 degree heat over the track today. What followed from the other 3 enthralled as after 65 laps John Heffernan N.F CC lost a bike length off his pacer Alan Macrae, which was quickly capitalised on by Tony Hibbert leading the Irishman Nigel Macaodha, to just beat Jason Streather -V.C.St R in a close finish.
Final epic 100 Lap 25 Km result. Something this length would never be an easy prospect for the 5 competitors, George Farrell leading the first 10 before James Hollander kept a blistering pace for the next 6 K. 10 Ks in Brendan Drewett got lapped before abandoning . Race after that became something of a head to head between the London pilots and their riders Oli Moors and James Holland Leader with Moors eventually winning.

Bournemouth Track League 11, Report & Brief Results

It was another perfect evening at Bournemouth track, the warm, calm conditions providing some super racing. Tom Day (Poole Wheelers) got proceedings underway winning a well handicapped Youth 6-lapper before B League leader, Gareth Rose (Bournemouth Arrow) made the 12 lap scratch look easy . Charley Calvert (Bournemouth Arrow) won the A league 15 lap version, seeing off the more experienced Adam D’Arcy Wykes (Team Terminator) & Richard Eastham (Bournemouth Jubilee). Calvert regulary knocks out a “22” in the club 10 and looks a real talent! A series of 3 lap match sprints produced some tight finishes and some not so tight, Rebecca Hurst (Poole Wheelers) looked hungry in the ladies final, keeping the opposition high where she wanted them, she was never going to be passed, though Lucy Edmunds (Bournemouth Arrow) tried!

Gareth Rose proved too good for Dan Lovett in the B final, the A league is surely a better place for Rose? Frank Kilsby went with just over a lap to go, after a cagey start in the A league final, Eastham worked hard but was well beaten. It was Rose again in the B Elimination race, although fixed –wheel tester, Nick Frewin (Bournemouth Jubilee) put up a good fight. The A League devil, the best race of the night, was full on from the gun; it was difficult to tell which were the sprint laps. There was no let up till just D’Arcy Wykes & Eastham were left with Wykes just taking it on the line. The final 20 lap Scratch saw half a dozen riders go clear on the first lap, among the six were Rose, Kilsby & Nel and it looked promising. But the chasers, encouraged by a vocal Eastham started to make inroads, the pace forcing a few out of the back door. The junction was made, the back markers were lapped and with 7 to go Kilsby went, he faded towards the end but his courage was justly rewarded!
