Paul Jones (Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers) won his own clubs 42km Time Trial for the
4th time narrowly beating Dave Dent (Wight link) with Julian Thacker (vc ST Raphael)in third. Conditions looked good but most riders were down on last years time, as a nagging south westerly wind made the long climb out of the village of Wool even harder. This year the South DC has introduced compulsory rear lights for all events in the area and all riders were happy to comply. Jones, along with teammates Dave Pickering and Les Pick won the team award with a combined time of 3.17.44.

Weekly Round Up

• Verwoods Darren Kenny came away with three gold medals from the Para-Cycling World track championships held in Montichiari, Italy over the weekend. Kenny lead a British 1-2-3 in the 3km Individual pursuit, successfully defending his title ahead of teammates Shaun McKeon & Rik Waddon. Waddon had to settle for silver in the 1Kilometre TT as Kenny again proved too fast. On the final day of competition the Paralympic champion made it a hatrick of gold’s, breaking the world record to win the men’s team sprint. Former Bournemouth Jubilee Wheeler, Barney Storey picked up two silver medals, originally from Corfe Mullen, Storey was riding as Tandem Pilot for visually impaired stoker Anthony Kappes. Missing gold by 200ths of a second to GB pair Craig MacLean & Neil Fachie in the Kilo, Storey and Kappes won the first of the three leg match sprint final. The second leg went to Fachie & MacLean to set up a thrilling decider with the two British tandems nearly colliding before Fachie & MacLean stole it on the line. Barney’s wife, Sarah won gold in the 500m TT and the Individual pursuit, a 2nd claim member of Bournemouth Jubilee, she is aiming to become the first women to compete in both the Olympics and Paralympics. Born with no left hand, Storey was the first disabled athlete to compete for England at the Commonwealth Games after switching from swimming 5 years ago.
• Gary Dighton (Poole Wheelers) posted a super fast time of 56.09 to win the club 25 mile time trial. The former national record holder for the distance is getting back to his best form and will start favourite for this weekends Bournemouth Jubilee hilly 42km time trial. Riders expected to challenge Dighton on the testing Lulworth Cove course will be Adam Topham (High Wycombe CC), Paul Jones and Dave Pickering ((BJW).
• Bournemouth Arrow junior, Will Stephenson outsprinted experienced club mate Steve Moss to take 3rd place at the Mountbatten circuit in Portsmouth.

"A day in the Life"

A few pictures from the UCI Para-cycling track world champs in Italy, alas none of the racing though. Working as a "swanny" (soigneur) with the team i am only able to snatch a few shots now and then. Competition days are full on for 12 to 14 hours with a few stolen moments for a coffee and a sit down. Whilst the team flew down to Italy the Monday before the champs, i left the UK on the Saturday morning, driving a team car down through France with Performance Manager, Gareth Shepherd. The motorways are traffic free compared to home but the 80Euros in tolls add to the cost. We meet up with Martin & John, two mechanics and Mark, another swanny driving two vans, just south of Geneva and spend the first night on the French border, no athletes around so we are allowed a beer!. Through the Mont Blanc tunnel the following morning,the snow capped alpine peaks and clear blue sky welcome us to Italy. Its a straightforward trip along the motorway for 3 hours or so and we are checking into the hotel in Montichiarri. Gareth and me even manage 2 hours on the bikes in the warm spring sunshine, things will change tommorrow as the team flies in. Three days of easy road miles and some track work before the opening day on Friday. My day will include shopping, making lunch (the riders are full board but not the staff, so its sandwiches for us), massage, driving, i have been known to take the odd wrong turning but i usually arrive safely, anything really to keep the riders happy. We are on duty all the time but manage to watch the football on the tele in the mechanics room. With the racing underway things are a a little more stressed but it is all about the riders, carrying their helmets and bikes onto the track apron we are really in the thick of the action and part of the team. Glamorous, probably not but its better than working for a living. Mark and the mechanics leave Sunday night, Gareth and me drive back Monday midday, we take a toll free route through Switzerland & Germany, before heading back into France and an overnight stop at Metz. By tuesday lunchtime we are at the Eurotunnel in Calais (the riders flew back and are already home) but traffic is light and Gareth guns the engine on the Alpha Romeo BC car, drops me off at Chievely Services on the M4 and heads home to Cardiff. I have an hour to kill before the wife picks me up, so i write up my report for the Bournemouth Echo on my laptop and i am indoors at 5pm.

A few images from the Para- Cycling world Track Champs

The long drive down to Montichiarri in Italy for the UCI Para-Cycling World Track Championships was well worth it as the GB team came away with 9 gold medals. Inspirational performances from the likes of Jody Cundy, Sarah Storey and Battle Back heroes, Tel Bryne & Jon-Allan Butterworth, made for an exciting and emotional 3 days of competition. Tandem pairings, Barney Storey, Anthony Kappes, & Craig Maclean, Neil Fachie went head to head in the Kilo and the Match Sprint, Maclean & Fachie came out on top both times but were made to work really hard by Storey& Kappes, as one famous cyclist once said "No Gifts". Jody Cundy, Tel Bryne & Darren Kenny broke the world record winning the team sprint, it was kennys third gold adding to the two in the Kilo and the 3km Pursuit, where he lead a British 1-2-3 with Sean Mckeon and Rik Waddon. Cundy also went home with 3 medals, gold in the Kilo in world record time and silver in the 4km pursuit along with the team sprint. Ex-service men Tel Bryne and Jon -Allan Butterworth, have certainly faced tougher challenges and both excelled, Tel winning silver in the Kilo and Gold in the team sprint and Jon, holding back the tears on the podium as he picked up the gold medal after his Record breaking ride in the kilo. Fiona Duncan piloted Lora Turnham to a fine silver medal in the pursuit, there is undoubtedly more in the tank and Helen Scott and Aileen Mcglyn went agonisingly close, having to settle for silver. Sarah Storey was imperious, taking gold in the 500m time trial and the 3km pursuit, Sarah has missed selection for the able bodied worlds later this month but few would bet against her being at both the Olympics and Paralympics in London next year. The GB team dominated these championships and secured precious qualification points for London 2012, something to think about on the long drive home.

Darren Kenny and Barney Storey hit the medal trail on the first day of the Para-Cycling World Track Championships in Montichiarri, Italy. Kenny defended his 3KM Pursuit title in an all British affair that saw Rik Waddon pick up the silver before Kenny beat teammate, Shaun Mckeon to to the top spot on the podium. Tandem Pilot Barney Storey and Stoker Anthony Kappes had to settle for siver in the 1km time trial as fellow Brits, Neil Fachie & Craig Mclean took the Gold by 200ths second. • At a celebration lunch at Bournemouth's Hotel Collingwood, club treasurer Anne Stevens presented Steve Staniland with a donation of £1000 from the Bournemouth Arrow Cycling Club to the new Bournemouth Cycling Centre. Currently under construction at Slades Farm and due to open in May, the Centre will provide an outdoor cycle track for use by both the community and competitive cyclists and will host a variety of activities, ranging from taster sessions, instruction and coaching for beginners and advanced riders and weekly competition. On behalf of the Centre, Staniland is assembling a fleet of 21 hire bikes together with a full set of equipment to run coaching sessions and competition, Steve said, "With the track nearing completion, the pressure is on to raise money and get it spent quickly so we are sufficiently equipped on the opening day. With this generous donation we are nearly there and need only one final fund raising push. Other cycling organisations who have already made donations are the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers, CTC Bournemouth, Dorset Cycling Development Group and the New Forest CC.
• Gary Dighton (Poole WH) was a clear winner of the clubs hilly time trial on the Lulworth circuit. Recording a time of 42.13 for the testing 12 mile course, Dighton beat club champion Terry Icke, 43.47, into second place, with Richard Davidson 3 minutes adrift in third place. Meanwhile Dave Pickering (Bournemouth Jubilee) took his first win of the season in the club Mountain bike 10, Pickering’s time of 27.15 was well clear of Rupert Silman,29.10, in second. Former triathlete, Nick Spencer, riding a road bike set the fastest time with 25.37.. Paul Jones (BJW) was disappointed to finish in 19th place, at the East Surrey hardriders, 30 mile time trial, Jones time of 1.15.43 was nearly 10 minutes slower than winner, Wouter Sybrandy (Sigma Sport).
• The World Para-Cycling track championships take place this weekend at Montichiarri, Italy. Darren Kenny OBE from Verwood will be out to defend his titles in the individual pursuit, 1 KM Time Trial and the mens team sprint.

• Bournemouth based Bryce Dyer got his season off to a flying start with victory in the Andover WH 10.2 mile hilly time trial. Riding for his new team, VC St Raphael, Dyer recorded a time of 27.27 for the technical course beating team mate Jake Prior into second place by 50secs. Former New Forest rider, Martin Beale backed up Dyer and Prior in 5th place with 28.51 to give the Raphael trio the team award. Dyer, who is a senior lecturer in engineering at Bournemouth University, is better suited to flatter roads but road strongly in the cold conditions “It’s the only time you will see me win a hilly race this year” Joked Dyer after the race.
• Paul Jones (Bournemouth Jubilee) opened his account for the time trial season with a win in the Poole Wheelers Hardriders event at Clouds Hill. Jones clocked 38.42 for the 27km course, beating the promoting clubs Leighton Girling by just 16 secs. Jones will be riding the East Surrey 30 mile event this weekend and as a former winner, will be hoping for a share of the £1,000 prize fund on offer. Meanwhile, ex triathlete Nick Spencer (Bournemouth Jubilee) finished in 13th place behind former British Best All Rounder, Nik Bowdler (Team Pedal) in the A3CRG 10 mile event at Petersfield. Spencer recorded a time of 27.14 nearly 4 minutes adrift of the winner but picked up the Target Time award.
• This Saturday sees Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers open their season with their 10 mile mountain bike event at Furzehill. Club points are on offer for those who ride the “on- road” course on “off- road” bikes. Signing on is at 15.00 at the council offices, Furzehill and the Jubilee would remind all competitors that the new rear light ruling will apply. All machines must be fitted with a working rear light that must be switched on.

• Paralympic gold medalist, Darren Kenny OBE has been training hard ahead of the Para-Cycling track World Championships in Italy next month. Verwood based Kenny; along with the GB Para-Cycling squad has been doing intensive training at the Newport Velodrome in Wales and is coming into form at the right time. The strong GB squad will be looking to bring home a good haul of medals but perhaps more importantly score qualification points for the London 2012 Paralympics. The amount of points each nation scores will determine the number of athletes eligible to compete in the 2012 games. Kenny will be riding the 1 Kilometer time trial, the 3KM Individual pursuit and the Team Sprint. As the reigning world champion, Kenny is entitled to wear the rainbow colours and will not give up his title easily. Two ex-servicemen, Tel Byrne and Jon-Allan Butterworth who lost limbs in Iraq and Afghanistan have joined the squad through the Battle Back Rehabilitation programme, which helps injured service men and women return to an active life.
• Bournemouth Arrow was forced to cancel their 10 mile time trial last week, after race Official Anne Stevens was injured in a freak accident. Stevens was coaching at the Calshot track the day before when she was brought down by another rider and sustained a broken rib and elbow. Over 20 riders had signed on for the event but the club was left with no choice but to cancel. This weekend sees the Andover wheelers promote their early season hilly 10 mile time trial on the Vernham Dean course.
• The final round of the Rempstone mountain bike Duathlon series saw Kim Little (Gillingham Wh) break the course record for the 4 mile run,15 mile Cycle and 2 mile run in the Purbecks. Little recorded a time of 1hr 27.36 in the muddy conditions to clock up his third win in the 4 race series and takes the series overall from Jon Clemas (BJW)
