Stephenson Confirmed for Junior Road Worlds Team! Updated

Will Stephenson (Primera/Specialized) has been named in the final six man squad for the junior world road race championships in Holland next week. Selection followed an intense 4 day training camp in Wales, coach Matt Winston spoke to the riders individually on Wednesday evening. Stephenson will put the final touches to his preparation at the Keizer Der Juniores 2 day race in Belgium this weekend. The 3 stage race consisting of 98 km RR/6Kkm tt/103 km RR should give the Primera rider a good workout ahead of the World championships. Will spoke to "Local Riders,Local Races" on his way to Belgium “The whole thing feels surreal. Going into the training camp I was not sure what to expect, we averaged over 4 hours riding each day and there were some really tough sessions. I could tell I was going better than some of the other lads and I did well in a few of the exercises but I never felt comfortable that I had done enough. On the final evening the coach spoke to us individually and told us whether we were in or not. I did not feel much immediately, I think it took a while to sink in as later I couldn’t stop smiling. I do not feel too much pressure going into it so I am going to make sure I enjoy myself. I want to try a few things and see what happens. I’d like to thank all the people who have supported me and believed I could get here, family friends and team mates”

More Track Coaches: The Challenge for 2013

In the 18 weeks between the start of May and the end of August 2012, the “No Vacancies” sign was up for anyone wanting to make an evening session booking during the week,writes Alan MaCrae, with no fewer than 95% of the evenings available already booked by local cycling organisations, companies and individuals. In only its first full summer of operation, this has made Bournemouth’s new Cycle Track already one of the busiest outdoor tracks in the country during the peak Summer period.
Key to this success was the newly installed team of volunteer local Coaches. During the Centre’s build phase they were only 2 in number but were joined at the Opening of the Centre in July 2011 by a further 11 newly trained coaches. In something of a baptism of fire those Coaches responded to the early demand during what was left of Summer 2011 and have since grown in stature and experience in meeting the challenges set by everything that the Olympic Summer of 2012 was to throw at them. Each week, coaching for Novice, Intermediate, Competition, Club and Corporate sessions was professionally delivered as riders across the age and ability spectrum took to track cycling in their hundreds.
Track use during the daytime relied on the very small section of the Coaching Team available during the day. Sessions for local schools and the University proved very popular, peaking at 230 children attending Bournemouth’s first ever Schools Cycling Sports Day held amongst nearby Primary and Junior Schools. Winton College, located right next door to the Centre, has now trained their PE teachers to coach cycling and this will be shortly extended to the use of the track on their own fleet of special bikes. Saturday mornings has proved particularly popular amongst U14s with an explosion of attendance at the Saturday Kids Club.
The outstanding results in Track Cycling at both the Olympics and Paralympics have almost inevitably pushed interest off the scale. In addition, there will be even more youngsters coming through via the Schools’ links Programme providing a massive challenge ahead in 2013.
Alan McRae from the Bournemouth Cycling Centre says “The volunteer Coaching Resource is the most precious asset. Growth in the number and experience of Coaches is fundamental to the further expansion in rider numbers using the Centre. Any cycling organisation, club, group or individual wanting to use the Centre in Summer 2013 need to look around and encourage colleagues to get trained to provide this much needed additional resource. It would be sad if we had to turn bookings away next year because insufficient coaching resource is available. Now is the time to contact British Cycling and apply to get trained.”

NEW Forest Cycling Club powerhouse Gary Lock’s super season continued unabated with a cracking 54-minute 25-miler at Poole followed by a 58 in the final club championship counting event on the slower Ringwood course. Lock’s personal best 54min 57sec ride in the Poole Wheelers’ test earned him seventh place behind VC St Raphael’s Stephen Walking (52-29), Poole’s own winning team of Gary Dighton, Terry Icke and Andy Buddle (52-52, 52-54 and 54-00), Revo Racing’s Tom Alliban (54-17) and Bournemouth Jubilee’s Nick Frewin (54-48).Other excellent rides came from Lock’s teammates Stuart Peckham, who rattled off a personal best 59-20, Rob Brinsdon (1-03-22) and Phil Sparkes (1-03-51), while second claim New Forest member Stuart Grace (GA Cycles) clocked a fine 1-01-11.VC St Raphael’s Bryce Dyer was fastest overall in New Forest CC’s club 25 south of Ringwood on Sunday in 58 minutes exactly, with Lock finishing 32 seconds in arrears to take three points which earned him three championship points to put him level at the top of the table with Ben Boardman. Making a welcome return to racing, New Forest’s Nick O’Hara took third overall with 1-02-26, followed by second claim member Martin Beale (VC St Raphael) with 1-02-36, Peckham was fifth (1-02-51), James Bannister sixth (1-03-47), while Hugh Roper took first handicap award with 1-07-26 for seventh.The event attracted six riders under the Come and Try It scheme. Rendall off to NZ! New Forest CC triathlete Tony Rendall will soon be heading out to New Zealand to take part in the Triathlon Age Group World Championships.He has not only qualified for the Olympic distance event, but after finishing second in his age group in the Bristol Triathlon, had qualified for the World Sprint Finals as well.“I was then lucky enough to be able to choose which event I wanted to do,” he said.“I have opted to go with the Sprint in New Zealand as I’m still new to racing at this level and think that it may be my best chance of doing well.“Hopefully this was the best choice, but it really is going to be an hour or so of flat out, on-the-limit, racing, if I want to finish at the sharp end.“My training is going fairly well, although it’s tiring on the body, and I recently won the Bucklers Hard Sprint Triathlon at Beaulieu which I used as part of my build-up.“It’s less than two months to go until I travel to NZ so hopefully everything keeps going according to plan.”
Yeates is Sotonia 10 Champ! Colin Yeates won Sotonia CC’s 10-mile championship on the King’s Somborne-Romsey road on Sunday in 23-05 from Stuart Martingale (23-28) and Gawain Young (24-02).New Forest CC riders Mick Williams and Martin Balk clocked 27-10 and 30-26 respectively.
Wales was the place to be on Sunday! Multiple national time trial champion Michael Hutchinson set a new 25-mile competition record of 45-46 in the Port Talbot Wheelers’ event in South Wales on sunny Sunday, clipping eight seconds from Dave McCann’s 45-54.Poole’s Adam Topham (High Wycombe CC) took a fine fifth place with 48-52.Ringwood’s James Gilfillan (Contre la Montre), fresh from winning the British Time Trials Championship Masters A group the previous weekend, claimed eighth with 49-05 and his teammate, Totton’s Stephen Whitewick, who was second in the BTTC Masters E section, filled 13th slot with 49-55.Poole Wheelers,Paul Jones 52-17, R Davidson 54-02, D Lewis 54-27 in the main event and M Aldridge did 54-37 in the overflow event.
In North Wales the same morning, New Forest CC veteran Bob Jolliffe was one of those able to take advantage of near-perfect conditions in the VC Melyd 10, clocking a 15-year best of 26-36. Four riders beat 30mph: Rhos-on-Sea CC’s Justin McIlveen and Gareth Bowyer took first and second with 19-48 and 19-49, while Wrekinsport’s Steve York and Sportscover-Altura RT’s Nigel Haigh were the other 30mph-ers with 19-56 and 19-57.Conditions were somewhat more difficult in windy East Anglia on Saturday afternoon where Chris Jolliffe finished the Norwich ABC 10 in 26-42. Winner was Strada Sport’s Liam Gentry with 20-45.
Bramshaw’s Julia Shaw (Drag2Zero) took the silver medal in the Women’s race in the BTT Championship with 49-56 behind Olympic Women’s Team Pursuit reserve Wendy Houvenaghel’ s 48-55. Second claim New Forest CC rider Rob Ellis (VC St Raphael) finished the Masters C group with a time of 57-43 and Southampton’s Harry Bulstrode (Contre la Montre) was fifth in Masters A with 48-27

Golden Storey!

Sarah Storey duly delivered her 4th gold medal of the London Paralympic Games, winning the women’s C5 road race at Brands Hatch, with consummate ease. Storey started as red hot favourite for the 64km race on the rolling, technical motor racing circuit in Kent. Indeed, the ten time Paralympic gold medallist is so far ahead of her rivals, it was difficult to see where the challenge would come from. That question was answered straight from the gun. With the C1-3 men starting 2 minutes ahead of the women’s race, Storey quickly attacked off the front and it was clear what the plan was. The men were reeled in at 24 miles and from then on it was a procession! Of course it is never that easy, Storey has done the work this year, with hard road miles and quality racing abroad providing the condition. On the final lap, a cushion of seven minutes over the chasers allowed her to enjoy the moment; the high fives started 300 metres from the line. The large crowd were loving every minute of it in the warm sunshine and draped in the Union flag, Storey really is a crowd pleaser. Anna Harkowska of Poland outsprinted Kim Crowley of the USA to add another silver to the one she won in the time trial.

Sarah Storey Celebrates Gold in C5 Time Trial at Paralympic Games!

Sarah Storey stormed to gold at Brands Hatch on day one of the London Paralympic games road cycling events. Storey claimed her 10th paralympic medal and is favourite to make it 11 in todays road race. Storey finished 1:34 secs ahead of the polish rider Anna Harkowska, clocking 22.40 for the 16km course based around the famous motor racing circuit.

Only 2 races in the Portsmouth CTL series left it looks like Justin Hoy has the series in the bag with myself in 2nd overall and Ian Legg in 3rd.
Will Stephenson rode a strong supporting race keeping the bunch together for the sprint and himself out of trouble prior to his GB selection camp this weekend.

BC/CTT Time Trial Champs

James Gilfillan rides and writes.... The 2012 British Time trial champs (at present a joint production by British Cycling and the CTT) took place near Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire on Sunday. Taking riders away from the smooth surfaces of the nation’s dual carriageways the 21 miles took in minor roads through farmlands of the Belvoir valley. Based on a road race circuit, the course had bits of everything to test the 150 over-30 men. As opposed to the previous year’s almost flat course, this year had a significant climb half way through the 21 miles, initially climbing steadily before ramping up steeply for the last 500ish m. What goes up must come down, but the many twists and turns meant the descent never opened out into a 50mph frenzy. The run to the finish, covered twice over the 1 ½ laps was an almost dead straight gradual drag up into a wind that sucked the speed out of weary legs. As defending champion in the 30-34 age group and quickest Master last year I was nervous about defending my title, especially having seen a variety of 19 and 49mins rides by many of the riders due to start after me, but felt the course would suit me well. Field placing was in reverse order of entry times meaning ‘catches’ were unlikely and even more so when your minute man doesn’t start and your 2 mins man is standing on the side of the road poking at his front wheel when you pass him. This lead to a ‘lonely’ ride, with nothing against which to gauge how well I was riding. Having ridden a short section of the course on Saturday, up the main hill and sharpest of the corners, I’d decided on a strategy of trying to recover on the mile drag approaching the steep section of the climb, drop into the little ring before actually hitting the steep section. However my strategy didn’t take account of the first sharp corner taken at high speed about 2 miles after the start or the arrival of tractors and combines out on the course! Accelerating after dodgy corners has been a factor of my cycling and getting around the tractors wasn’t that difficult on the straight sections of the course, but distractions none-the-less and no worse than a herd of cows or donkeys on the forest roads. The long climb went smoothly, recycling the worst of the corners paid off and the ½ lap to the finish was underway. I still felt in control of the ride and knew it’d be about getting as much out on the run into the wind to the finish line. My pre-race concerns were clearly misplaced. Back to the HQ and the usual check of the results board showed It’d taken my category and was quickest master on the day again, repeating my feat of last year, but by a significantly greater margin! Perhaps those 19’s and 49’s are overrated!

Also racing from Contre La Montre were Harry Bulstrode (30-34) who took 5th despite puncturing on the way to the start and getting a loan of a disc from a random competitor who’d finished and Steve Whitewick who claimed silver in the 50-55 category. Representing the New Forest in the Women’s field was new 10mile comp record holder Julia Shaw, vying for a place on the GB worlds team.(Shaw has been named on the long list) Clearly in form Julia took 2nd place behind ‘non-riding’ Olympian Wendy Houvenaghal, who to have been in with a shout of a place in the pursuit squad must also be in great form. Alex Dowsett reclaimed his title of a year ago in a relatively quiet mens field that saw many DNS’s due to illness or other commitments.

The BikeWorkX 10 is an 10 hour endurance, fast course race for Mountain bikers which stretches over a 9 mile (ish) lap in the amazing New Forest. Whether a top Pro Rider or an absolute novice, everyone is very welcome to take part in the challenge.

Finding a venue in the New Forest for your pit crew/ team mates to plonk themselves was a bit tricky but we struck gold when Nick & Jaqui of The Red Shoot Camping Park agreed to be the site for our lapping point. With hot showers, toilets and a pub on site, it really is the most amazing location.

The event is simple, do as many laps as you can in 10 hours either by yourself (Solo), with a team mate (pairs) or as a larger group (up to 4 people mixed). The categories and prices are as follows:

The BikeWorkX ‘For 6 and giggles’ is an 6 hour, ‘focus on having a laugh with your mates’ mountain bike event. The course stretches over a 9 mile (ish) lap in the amazing New Forest on Sunday 4th November 2012. Although the key here is a fun day out for all, we are happy for serious riders to enter as well if they want to bang out a hard 6 hour training session.

The event is simple, do as many laps as you can in 6 hours either by yourself (Solo), with a team mate (pairs) or together i.e. ride at the same time (Dual) or, as a larger group (up to 4 people mixed).

The categories and prices are as follows and are for men and women, there are no prizes up for grabs here, it’s just for fun:

Stephenson Named on Long List for Worlds

Will Stephenson (Primera/Specialized) has been named on the 12 rider long list for the world road race championships in Limburg, Holland later this month. It is just reward for Stephenson who has enjoyed a fine season and recently finished second in the Junior Tour of Wales and sits on top of the BC 1st cat rankings with 508 points. The World Championships will run from 15th-23rd, with the 129km junior race taking place on the last day ahead of the elite race.If selected the rolling,technical course, including many of the climbs that feature in the Amstel Gold classic, should suit Stephensons style. Final selection will take place around the 13th.
