Shaw Sidelined by Shoulder Injury
A training accident has robbed Julia Shaw of the opportunity of riding for Great Britain at the Grand Prix De Nations in France this weekend. The forty six year old sustained Shoulder ligament damage that may require surgery. The New Forest based commomwealth games bronze medalist is already back on the turbo but the injury will take time to heal so racing is out of the question. A disappointed Shaw said “ I am so sad to be missing my final race of the season, the Grand Prix de Nations is my favourite race of all time, Riding for GB would have been a bit of consolation for not going to the worlds. I was really keen to give it one last blast”

Natiinal Trophy Cyclo-Cross Rnd 1
Luke Gray(Trek cross collective) rides & writes……Abergavenny Leisure Centre in Wales was the venue for the first round of Cyclo-Cross National Trophy Series. The day before the event the rain had given the course a good soaking so the first few races of the day had quite a muddy course to ride. But by the start of the Senior race the course had dry quite a bit but was still very slippery and there was one really muddy section which was removed when it got to our race.
I was ranked 5th so I had a front row griding which always helps. The raced started on the public highway then lead onto a long section of tarmac that went into a series of tight bends and an off cambered slippery hill. More than half the riders trying to ride this in practice slipped off left right and centre. I was about 5 and didn't get caught behind and idiots, however there was one that passed me on the tarmac but I passed him before the corner.
I stayed with the lead group of 5 or 6 for the first 3 plus laps then Ian Field put the boot in and I started to struggle and dropped back a bit. At that time I was in 4th place, then Olie Beckingsale (Endura MTB) Racing) came passed and I hooked up on his wheel, and we dropped the other two I was with. I rode for nearly 3 laps with Oli Beckingsale but I was tearing my legs off just to stay on his wheel, I shouldn't have been trying that hard to stay there, he was riding like he was still on his mountain bike, but was quite slow round the corners and over the planks.
With 20 minutes to go I was suffering for my efforts with Oli and was dropped. Then I was caught and passed by 3 under 23 riders (I was riding in the under 23's leaders green jersey position till that point). I carried on and tried to lose as little time as possible.
At two laps to go I was still having trouble up the steep banks trying to limit my losses. Then on the last lap I was passed yet again before the finish straight where the guy had about 4 seconds lead over me but I nearly caught him as I sprinted to finish 10th overall and 5th u23. I paid for my efforts with Oil but hopefully it will pay dividends late. Stu Bowers rode also rode also Mike Cotty
This week I have been given selection to ride for Team GB at the first round of the Cyclocross World Cup at Tabor in the Czech Republic. I last rode there at the World Cyclocross Champs more than a couple of years ago in the snow. Then the following week I stay in Czech for the second round of the World Series at Pilsen.

Sotonia Hill Climb, 14/10/12
Bob Joliffe reports…….RACE favourite Ben Cadie (Sotonia CA)) lived up to his billing and rode away from the Sotonia Cycling Club hillclimb at West Dean £150 to the good after beating last year’s victor into second place by a full 14 seconds on Sunday.Cadie, 24, who lives at Up Somborne, earned his scratch status by dint of winning a shorter climb on Dean Hill in March. This version started in the centre of West Dean and, for Cadie, finished a grinding, gut-wrenching five minutes and a single second later at the summit of Dean Hill a tortuous mile-and-a-quarter away.It was an immense ride which finished on a bone-jarring surface with a 12 per cent gradient over the final section past the cheering spectators up to the timekeeper.Last starter Cadie’s ride was 14 seconds too good for Brook Elgie (Peter Hansford Racing) who had another eight seconds in hand over third-placed Oscar White of Somerset Road Club whose 5-27 made him fastest junior.Fourth place went jointly to Jahan Hunter of Manchester Wheelers and Elgie’s teammate Ollie Hitchings who both clocked 5-32.Sotonia’s Phil Wilks took sixth with 5-34. His clubmate Graham Vail was first veteran aged 40 to 49 with 5-40 and tied for seventh with Ray Hughes (Clarence Whlrs) who was fastest in the 50-59 age group, while Sotonia’s Martin Ward was first 60-plus rider with 7-21.Cameron Taylor was first home club junior in ninth overall with 5-43 while New Forest CC’s 16-year-old Hugo Walters was 11th with 5-50. Between the two juniors in 10th was Sotonia’s Jon Legg with 5-47.Last rider inside six minutes was Legg’s clubmate Richard Burch with 5-57.Others (Sotonia CC unless stated): Brian Minard 6-00, Sean Holehouse 6-05, Darren Sell 6-48, David White and Sean Withill both 6-53, Zondy Webber 6-58, Robert Smart 7-02, Julian Sheppard 7-10, Greg Vint 7-33, Daniel Sahota 7-43, John Sanchez-Bisson (Crabwood CC) 7-48 and Joanne Horsnell who took the women’s prize with 8-06.

Fielding on Top at Okeford!
Harrison Fielding took advantage of the absence of serial winner Simon McLaughlin to register his first win in the Inter-club hill climb competition. (McLaughlin chose to ride the Bec & Catford open hill climbs instead.) Fielding was a clear winner on a stunning autumn morning, early mist and frost cleared to leave panoramic views of north Dorset. The climb of Okeford Hill is perhaps the toughest of the four rounds, the smallest field so far , perhaps reflecting the severity of the slopes. CC Weymouth lead the team competition with the final round to come on Whiteways Hill in the Purbecks next Sunday.

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers Reliability Trials 2012/13
Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers will once again be running their popular series of reliability trials this winter. Starting with the 50 mile event in early November through to the 100 mile finale in February The trials provide a good focus for winter training and the challenge of completing all 4 rides for the coveted Jubilee medal is harder than it seems.

The routes are mostly on undulating small country lanes and provide a good test of rider and machine.
The routes are circuits and the direction of each is reversed each year.
Members (First and Second Claim) £1 per Reliability Trial, other riders are required to become Associate Members of the Club and will pay £5 for all four Reliability Trials and all BJW Club Runs for a year. You can join on the day.

Sarah Storeys London 2012 Blog Pt 3
..As an athlete the period in the run up to and during the Games is the familiar part you operate in for so long. Living and breathing cycling, making sure that every base is covered, making sure that no stone is left unturned so that on race day there can be no doubts that all there is left to do is race to the very best you can.
For me the build up to London 2012 was meticulously planned. My team around me had been incredible in their support and the For VioRed racing team couldn’t have worked harder in getting me into the best possible shape for road racing. Of course that planning and structure is the safest place to exist, in the zone of control and familiarity. Once the competition is over though, the familiar routine vanishes into a haze of emotion, excitement and celebration!
The chance to celebrate, thank people and share your experience of winning Gold at a Home Games becomes the new obsession and there is nothing that prepares you for the whirlwind that I have been so lucky to enjoy since finishing racing. Whilst living in the athlete bubble you have no idea of the reception that will greet you in the outside world, but when I started the whirlwind of media activity and interviews on the morning after winning my 4th Gold in London, I started to realise that London had been even more special than we could ever have imagined.
After a round of media appointments I made my first appearance at Deloitte House and being welcomed on to their impressive roof terrace to the Stone Roses “This Is The One” was quite overwhelming but I couldn’t have imagined a more appropriate setting for my first public appearance, overlooking the Olympic Park and wearing all four medals at once! When people started spotting me from the street below and yelling my name I had to pinch myself to see if I was dreaming some ego inflated dream! The excitement from people meeting me and spotting me from the roof was surreal and I started to wonder what had been going on whilst we were head down and in race mode!
The very same evening I was able to head into my old stomping ground of the Aquatic Centre and walking through the athlete zone to the stands was an emotional trip back to my previous life. I loved being able to watch the action, soak up the atmosphere in the Aquatic Centre and wonder how it is possible that those guys can swim so fast these days!
After a brief visit to be a part of the presentation team who were warming up the crowd before the action in the Olympic Stadium on the final evening of competition, Barney and I sat back to reflect on the fact we were approaching our final full day inside the Paralympic Village. The last time either of us had attended a Ceremony was the Closing Ceremony in Athens, so we were excited to be a part of the team that would march into the London Olympic Stadium to say good bye to the best Games we had been fortunate to be a part of.
I honestly hadn’t thought my experience could get any better but then I was told I had been chosen to carry the flag, alongside fellow quadruple Gold Medallist David Weir, at the Closing Ceremony! It was an emotional moment, and announced in front of a packed reception at Paralympics GB House. The gathering had been to celebrate the Gold Medallists in the team and we were treated to an appearance and song from Tony Hadley, who obviously sang “Gold” to us! I couldn’t have asked for a better closing to the Games and when we stepped out into the stadium that evening it was one of the proudest times of my life.
The excitement continued the following day with the Team Parade and it couldn’t have been more emotional than seeing the 100’s of 1000’s of people who were lining the streets to congratulate us. Meeting up with the Olympic Team and being able to congratulate them for the first time on their inspirational success was just the start of a day that got better and better.
I was part of float 7 with Barney one float ahead on float 6, so obviously we spent much of the day waving at each other madly whenever we caught the other one’s eye! The size of the crowd compared to our parade after Beijing was incomparable and there were some fantastic messages being held up throughout the crowd by people trying to catch the attention of their favourite athletes. From marriage proposals to phone numbers and people telling us how proud they are, the signs were everywhere and at times the noise was deafening!
Trafalgar Square had been the finishing point for the parade after Beijing and I had thought we were stopping there again, but then we arrived there to the biggest crowd of anywhere I soon realised the amazing tour was continuing and we would get to enjoy it for even longer. There was a commentator at Trafalgar Square telling the crowd who was in each float and when Barney and I came into view he announced that we were the most successful family at the Games and that if we had been a nation we would have been 24th in the medal table, with 5 Gold and 1 Silver. He also mentioned we would have been ahead of Canada in the medal table, an interesting thought, especially when you remember that Canada House is based right there at Trafalgar Square!
Finishing outside Buckingham Palace, being interviewed alongside Sir Chris Hoy and completing the celebrations in front of friends, family, volunteers and officials from the Games, we were treated to a fly past and the party atmosphere continued as everyone made their way to the Prime Ministers reception just a short walk away.
Since finishing the parade, leaving the Village and reacquainting ourselves with the cat at home, we have been most frequently asked about how we have coped with coming down to earth and whether we have landed with a bump yet or not. In all honesty I don’t think we have hit the floor yet! Life without training has been even busier than I could have ever imagined. Knowing that London 2012 touched the lives of so many people makes it even more of an honour to have been a part of.
When I came home from Atlanta in 1996 with 3 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze, within the sports world I was labelled as the most successful athlete for Great Britain at the Paralympics, but the reception from the wider population was quite different to the way it has been this time. It wasn’t that no one cared, it is just that no one knew! I went to University and didn’t tell anyone what I had done during the summer, it wasn’t until a few people spotted me on “Noel’s House Party” a few weeks later, that anyone outside of sport had an idea! Since the London Games I have been stopped in the street, approached on trains and in airports and told how proud people are to have watched me race!
It is truly unbelievable and really so amazing to hear when other people tell me about their own experiences of my events. So many families who tell me about their weekend cycling activities and 100’s of proud parents tell me their kids will not believe that they have met me, so have to have their photograph taken! On a recent trip to a primary school, the look on the faces of the children when we walked into assembly was priceless and when six children in a row asked the same question because they were so overwhelmed by our presence, it started to sink in about what it meant to them.
I was six years old when the Olympics first caught my imagination and I have spent my whole life following that ambition and hope to be able to continue to follow this amazing path for a few more years to come.
The Games motto was “Inspire A Generation”, which couldn’t be more appropriate, however in our whistle stop tour of as many places as possible since the Games ended, I think it is fair to say that “A Generation” doesn’t necessarily refer to the youngest generation. Every generation I have met has been so excited to meet both Barney and I and see our medals. We have had photographs with young and old, signed pictures, books, t-shirts, stamps, newspaper articles and Games event tickets. We have answered questions and shared stories, we have listened to the excited stories of others telling us what the Games meant to them and we have been overwhelmed by cards, flowers and gifts. This Games has been the best ever because everyone has been involved, everyone has shared it together and we will be able to continue to talk about how great it is for years and years to come.
Thank you to everyone who played a part, without each and every one of you, we could not have done cycled so fast and our team mates in other sports could not have produced their best either. Being part of the Greatest Team Parade was such a fitting end to the excitement of the Games but for me I think it will be Lord Coe’s words in that Olympic stadium that I will always remember…
“We will be able to say; when our time came, we did it right.”
I couldn’t agree more.

Creech Hill Climb Results
Simon McLaughlin (BJW) made it two out of two in the interclub hill climb competition. A winner on Portland last week, McLaughlin was just too good for junior Harrison Fielding who in turn was 9 seconds clear of Andy Graham (BJW).Round 3 next Sunday sees the riders tackle the daunting Okeford Hill in North Dorset. Okeford hill is well known to most local cyclists as the course for the old EDCA Hill Climb. It also features in the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers 75 mile reliability trial. Both McLaughlin & Graham have entered the Bec CC Hill Climb next week so the interclub series will have a different winner for the first time in 2 years.

Downton 2 Day,Glenn Longland Classic
James Gilfillan (Contre la Montre) won the Downton 2 day race after dominating both stages against the clock. Gilfillan took the opening 2.4km Prologue Time Trial, clocking 4.01 for the climb up Whitsbury Hill, 4 seconds clear of Rowan Horner (VC ST Raphael/Waites Contracts).
Tony Kiss (Stratford CC) improved 5 seconds and 2 places on last year to take third place. The short, big ring test is never steep but always hard and the mud on the lane from heavy overnight rain made a mess of clean bikes.Based in the Hampshire village of Downton, south of Salisbury, the 16th edition of the Glenn Longland Classic attracted a healthy entry of 60, the biggest in the history of the event although last year’s victor, Steven Whitewick was forced to withdraw to attend a funeral. The afternoons 42km handicap road race saw 4 groups, separated by 2, 3 & 5 minutes, gaps that soon started to tumble. It was the race leader who led the charge in the scratch group as the race headed out across the heathland roads. Gilfillan, followed by Phil Reynolds (Peter Hansford Cycles) and Tony Kiss opened up a small gap as they started to reel in the slower groups in front. 42km allows little time for thinking; Reynolds had no less than five teammates in the fast group but the three were allowed to ride away catching the leading group with still 7 miles to race. Into the uphill finale and Kiss came round Reynolds to win the road stage for the second year running. Gilfillan did not contest the sprint, happy with the time gap to the, by now, awake scratch group. The big loser through the indecision though was Rowan Horner who was left to chase. Horner is a good time triallist but the job had just got harder.
“James was beasting it on the front, he did about 90%, I did what I could, my legs felt pretty fresh going into the final climb” said Kiss. Sunday’s 37km Circuit of Fritham time trial in the south west corner of the New Forest was made for the triathlete- turned tester Gilfillan. He regularly trains on the rolling roads and quickly started to extend his overall lead, first in bright autumn sunshine, then, on the higher roads, in thick mist. “I worked hard,I did what I do” said a smiling Gilfillan. A mention for Glenn Longland and his hard working team of marshals & helpers who each year put on a great race with a good prize fund. This years race was supported by Contre La Montre and Longland, a former British Best All-Rounder and Time Trial Champion confirmed at the prize presentation that the classic that bears his name will be on next year.

Cyclo-Cross: Wessex League/Viaamse Industrieprijs Cross
Rob Gray reports from Wareham Forest...It was local lad Stu Bowers(Hargroves Cycles) who lead out the race on his first outing this cross this season. Leading the way through the trees flowing nicely over the very dry terrain which is quite sandy here. The big downhill through the trees seemed to be most peoples favourite part of the course, and was wide enough for riders to over take on before the turn at the bottom. Though it was also the part of the course which caused the most upset with puncture's and the odd tumble as James Cotty (Wheelbase /Cannondale) demonstrate breaking his helmet in the process.
Halfway round the first lap Mike Cotty (Wheelbase Cannondale) found himself in the middle of a Hargroves quartet sandwich. Mike said afterwards " I wanted to take it easy for the first couple of laps". Unfortunately he caught a loose stone or a root down the big hill on the second lap and puctured, and having just passed the second pit he had to run half a lap to the next pit for a bike change. With the absents of the winners from round one and two the pace was set by the Hargroves Quartet of Stu B, Steve James, Matt Mac Donald and Matt Hargroves in a procession at the head of the race.
Junior Matt Hargroves who had opted to ride the senior men's race this week was the first of the quartet to slip off the leading group. He had already took a bike change on the third lap due to a puncture a was now struggling to hold his team mates wheels. In the mean time it was the slower starting Chris Minter (PedalOn) with Peter Kench (Team GWR) leading the chase.
With the last lap belling ringing Chris Minter was now on full song reeling in the flagging Matt Hargroves, who took great delight passing him before the final hill. Matt Mac Donald was also feeling the pace as the leading duo of Steve James and Stu Bowers had now upped the pace, and it wasn't long before the elastic broke leaving Matt on his own.
Up the final hill climb it was Steve James in control at the front, with Stu B right behind. Both riders had to dismount and shoulder their bikes over the top of the steep climb, but once back in the saddle it was Steve who won the sprint to the chequer flag.
The vets/women/Junior race was won by Mike Simpson (GS Henley) who was never trouble all race. He was really charging around the forest and judging by the speed he would of been on the senior men's podium had he enter that race.
Once again Luke Gray will be basing himself in Belgium for the Winter cross season with the occaisional foray home for the odd race. Here is Lukes report on his first race……. "The course was all flat apart from some little banks and dips in the woods, very much like Wareham Forest and a bit sandy with some pine needles about. There was a steep man made bridge that must have bitten a lot of guys rims (he probably means a nasty lip going onto the bridge). It was a very fast course and was tough in the woods accelerating out of the corners because it was quite rough with lots roots on the race line that were easy to catch and slip on".
" I felt good on my warm up on the turbo and found it easy to turn over big watts warming up for the race".
"At the start of the race I went steady on the tarmac as I did not want to go down, but I was also held up by the people in front of me. You could see later on the TV I was cruising behind them as I'm stuck with riders all around. Then someone went down at the sandy hump section near the start, so I got held up again a bit."
"I just rode hard for the rest of the race. I caught and passed some riders but it was quite uneventful. I didn't fall off or have any major woopsies. I found I was fast running the short flights of stairs, or faster than the others I was close racing with. I finished 28th and felt fine and enjoy the race, but the last half a lap wasn't quite so nice for some reason, I think it was just a mental thing like the body getting ready to turn off as it's near the end".
