Moreton Series, Wins for Hatfield & Haycock

Young Ed Hatfield (Primera-Teamjobs) edged out James Horton (Cannondale) by the tightest of margins to win the latest round of the Moreton series in Dorset. The 16 year old got the verdict after a good 10 minutes deliberation from the finish line judges and Horton had no complaint.
Some good handicapping kept the scratch group chasing beyond the bell, finally bringing the race together at the tight left hander that is turn 1. Graham Bliss (Mud Sweat ‘n Gears) punctured on the corner and came down, hindering a few but up front thoughts were turning to the inevitable sprint. Horton favours the left, Hatfield the right and it was one on one as Simon Merritt (UK Biking-Copyrite) faded to fourth.
Next up for Hatfield is the Regional Junior Championships, his aggressive style and willingness to get stuck in must make him a contender.
In the earlier Women’s race Molly Haycock ,17,(Bournemouth Arrow) used her racing guile, honed on the track, to comfortably win, having let others do the work.
The profile of Women’s racing has never been higher, the uptake, at Moreton, at least, never lower the 7 who signed on way down on the 20 plus of last year. The organisers efforts deserve better, use it or lose it! None of this is Haycocks concern, although disappointed with the low turnout, she sat on the back frustrating the hard working Laura Raynor (Westbury Wheelers) and Gail Brown (Bournemouth Uni CC) before clinically dispatching them at the line, hopefully a lesson learned.
