Nat Trophy CycloCross:Field First in Southampton

More Photos on our Facebook page
Ian Field (Hargroves Cycles) won round 2 of the National Trophy CycloCross series at Southampton Sports centre, maintaining his 100% record after victory at Shrewsbury in round 1. Even at this early stage it is hard to see who will, or can challenge Belgian-Based Field who looked simply a class apart.
Ben Sumner (Beeline Bicycles RT) led early on but by lap two, Field and Belgian visitor, Quinten Hermans of the Telenet Fidea Cycling team had established a small gap of 10 seconds over Hermans teammate, Jens Vandekinderen. For a couple of laps Vandekinderen threatened to join the two leaders but his solitary hard work came too nothing as Field and Hermans began to share the front.
Behind these three, Alex Paton (Pedal Heaven), Steve James & Jody Crawforth (Hargroves Cycles), Sumner, Jack Clarkson (Hope Factory Racing), & Tom Van Den Bosch (Hargroves-Ridley RT) were having their own battle. Crawforth may have given Field some problems but he spent the whole race chasing after tangling wheels and hitting the deck as the flag dropped.
Paton looked strong but it was James who managed to pull away in the dry conditions securing an impressive fourth place.
The final time through the woods, Hermans made his move but Field knows the venue well and the Belgian was going nowhere. Credit to Hermans, he was never intimidated by Field but had no answer when the British National Champion muscled his way up the inside, determined to lead into the final corner. “I know the first man into the final corner wins” he would say later.

Adela Carter (Hope Factory Racing) attacked her breakaway companion, Merce Pacios Pujado (Beeline Bicycles) to win round 2 of the British Cycling National Trophy CycloCross series at Southampton. The pair had jumped away from a leading group of seven riders including the yellow jersey of series leader, Annie Simpson (Hope Factory Racing, at third distance. Simpson, still carrying the Rapha Supercross in her legs from the day before, would climb off before the finish. Diane Lee (Team Mulebar Girl), Hannah Payton (Kinesis Morvelo Project) Carter, & Annie Simpson (Hope Factory Racing),Junior, Amira Mellor (Paul Milnes RT), Sarah Murray (CX Magazine) and Pujado had quickly distanced the field before Carter & Pujado made their move. The final lap was a dress rehearsal for the Elite men’s race to come, with the leading pair trading blows all the way to the line. Well almost, Carter, like Field to come, pulled away at the death, a broad smile replacing the pain that had gone before! Mellor came late to take third from the tiring Lee.

General Admission: £4 Concession £2
Ticket Sales Available Now HERE

On Thursday November 6th, Southampton University Road Cycling Club (SURC) are proud to host an evening of cycling inspiration and education with three nationally and internationally recognised speakers, all of whom have achieved the extraordinary by turning their passion into a profession. Listen, learn and engage with each speaker as you hear more about how it all began, including the the highs and lows, and how they’ve been able to craft their own path towards cycling success. From unthinkable levels of human endurance through to training, racing, bike fit essentials, motivation and much more join us for a truly engaging evening of cycling and have your questions answered by our experts.

About the speakers

Cycling polymath Mike Cotty is globally recognised as an endurance icon. He has a unique occupation in the cycling world creating pioneering experiences that often see him staring at the face of adversity. This year he cycled 1,000 kilometres non-stop over the most challenging terrain in the Alps, battling sleep deprivation and forcing exhaustion aside. Mike knows how to set and beat goals and he has mastered his bodies' physical ability, he understands that the lessons he has learnt on the bike have a wider meaning in life and that there's no substitute for plain hard work.

Garth Kruger knows cycling and knows bike fit. It has been his life for two decades and when he arrives at work, he can be sure that he is going to significantly enhance his customers’ cycling experience. He is the owner of Vankru Cycling and is a renowned Retul Master bike fitter. He uses his vast knowledge of cycling to make sure people get the most out of their bikes and themselves.

Student cyclist Liam Glen spent three years racing and winning in the UK before making the decision to pause his studies and race full time in Flanders, thanks to the recognition and support of the Dave Rayner Fund. The “promised land” for any aspiring cyclist gave Liam some glorious memories, but the mud and rain-soaked cobbled-path that he chose dealt both broken moral and broken bones through a season he will never forget.

SURC looks forward to welcoming you on Thursday November 6th at the University’s Avenue campus. Ample free parking is available on site.

Bikeshed UEX Season Review

Bikeshed UEX TEAM PRESS RELEASE

It’s been a long, successful season for the new project, with all the riders on the Bikeshed-UEx squad going through purple patches and suffering some bizarre misfortune along the way.

Al Murison’s run of 10 race wins was outstanding, especially when his final-year degree studies mid- season are factored in. Big wins came at the very well supported Winchester and Bournemouth crits, events that suit Al’s style very well indeed. Always a threat in both, he featured in breaks and made decisive moves when needed, to take some delight in winning- we have photographic evidence! Consistent throughout the year, Al maintained his Elite status comfortably, racing from Feb to Sept, developing into a very capable all-rounder with a monster kick, a great year for him. A real pleasure to have on-board.

Andy Feather ventured into the unknown, keen to find out whether his physical strength translates well into longer, tougher events. I think he found it does, being part of the race-winning break up to 95 miles mark in the National RR Champs proved that. In very good company, when the pressure was on, he featured with the Pros, only to blow when the distance eventually got to him. An outstanding performance that proved a point, form that is backed up with great rides elsewhere, particularly in horrendous conditions at 1 Day in Dorset, for 3rd. Andy gained his Elite licence this year and is an undoubted talent.

Pete Medhurst was a model of consistency throughout the season, ably gaining his 1st cat licence, pushing very hard when needed in his unique style (heads-up racing Pete!). Always eager to get off the front and drive breaks along, Pete enjoyed his best season to date, a great effort all year. Perhaps the most ill fated stories of our season belong to Ash Martin. Combining great form and an eye for the right move, he suffered a spectacular crash whilst in the winning break at Lincoln GP, when a dog took his front wheel at 35 mph! Alongside this, an innocuous slip on gravel in National TTT, when on for a solid top 6 finish, were hard pills to swallow.

However, always able to read a race very well, Ash has developed into an excellent rider, with his obvious TT ability coming on very well, he now has a great deal of race experience from which to draw and develop further. There’s much more to come. Boris Hutchings development is coming on strong, combining very capable TT strength and the ability to climb, proving to be a good combination.

This year was very much a step-up and one for gaining race experience; an excellent ride in Cycle Wilts GP (56th) should bode well, and creditable 6th SW Champs, 9th Overall Ras de Cymru (always a tough race, even more so with 6 hours in A&E and stitches in his hand after Day 2) are solid results on which to build. Rich Oram had a limited season, with his PHD and work in RDE Hospital inevitably forcing his hand somewhat, he nonetheless proved to be a more than capable strongman with undoubted TT ability. Shame about TTT misfortune though.

The team has had great support all year and would like to extend all it’s heartfelt thanks to the sponsors, particularly Bikeshed, the guys at the Uni (good work, Beef), many all-weather feed zone helpers, Sam Bailey for driving and general mucking-in duties, Marcin for being cool, and everyone that has shown a real interest in what we’re doing. It’s all very much appreciated and important to us all.

The programme is developing, the race calendar evolving and we will be fielding a women’s team along side the men’s next year. There will be much more news in coming weeks, but any aspiring rider looking at combining Higher Education with a dedicated, extensive cycling programme should consider the University of Exeter, where cycling and rider development is going from strength to strength.

National Trophy CycloCross Rnd1

Sunday was the first round of the National Cyclo-Cross trophy Series held at Sundorne Sports Village in Shrewsbury, writes Luke Gray........ Despite the bad weather forecast the day before, there was an overnight change, to the huge relief of many competitors as this course can become a mud bath. This time the going was good along with the new top class pit area. The course here is pan flat with a small wood breaking up the grass playing fields plus a few small tricky banks thrown in around the tarmac finish straight.
I was ranked on the third row of the grid so I had to pick my way through many riders as we sprinted down the start straight on full gas in top gear. Joint second into the first turn was an excellent start which left me clear of traffic in a huge field of over 70 riders. Ben Sumner took the head of the race followed closely by Nat Champ Ian field, Jody Crawforth and Luke Gray. These 4 riders broke away from the rest of the field very quickly and were being chased by another small group of 4. On the second lap the chase group had caught the lead group, but as they entered the wooded section the same leading 4 riders pulled away again and this time the gap grew larger than before. Then halfway around the next lap I had to back off as the huge surges by Ian at the head of the lead group were going to split us up. I was then in no mans land with the chasing group coming after me. Halfway through the race Ian Field was out on his own having pulled well clear of everyone. I was now starting to pay for my efforts but still holding on inside the top 10. Mean while Liam Killeen had made his way up from the same start row as me, and was now upto 3rd place in pursuit of the leader. Just past the hour it was Field who took the chequered flag followed in by Killeen just 47 seconds later with Crawforth on his tail. In the last few laps I was struggling with a touch of cramp and had to settle for 16th on the finish line.
The next National Cyclo-Cross Trophy round is at Southampton Spports Centre in a couple of weeks time on the 26th October.
