Bournemouth Arrow/Raymond Brown Track League 1

The first round of the Raymond Brown track league was hailed a success, bright evening sunshine and fast aggressive racing christened the track. A programme of youth racing, scratch, points and elimination races kept coming till the sun went down. Poole Wheelers junior, Harrison Fielding has plenty of speed in his legs, a winter on the Calshot track has seen to that. Fielding was always at the head of affairs, looking to make the race, the impetuosity of youth getting the better of the tactician perhaps. “It hurts but it’s meant to” said the youngster.

He did not have it all his own way however, Will Stephenson (Primera/Specialized), also a junior, looks effortlessly strong, either chasing down or going for a “long one”. Sixth overall in the recent Junior Tour of the Mendips does not come without effort.

Jordan Wade (VC ST Raphael/Waite Contracts) is another youngster with the fight and determination required to win. The action was fast and thrilling! The small crowd of supporters and the” just curious” were certainly entertained. “Come along and watch for free” say the Bournemouth Cycling Centre.

The youngsters are the future but it is not all about them, experienced campaigner Roland Tilley (Ridebike.co.uk), raced on the old Winton Rec “D” shaped track. Twice a winner of the Southern area DIVS, Tilley, 48, spends his time racing mountain bikes but the track craft was evident and the fire still burns. “That Fielding was just a bit too fast for me tonight but its early days”

Despite the loss of the two dress rehearsal events to the rain, the officials soon found their feet and the operation will get slicker. The turnout was disappointing; no doubt the recent bad weather was a factor for those who had to travel. The locals, however, had no such excuse; the sun had been shining since early afternoon. Event promoter Alan McRae expects to double the numbers and momentum will undoubtedly build. McRae was happy with the first ever track meeting at the venue!

“It is all about speed. Tonight's racing was the fastest ever held in Bournemouth, it proved what a thrilling sport track cycling is and provided a shop window for local talent. These weekly meetings will really sharpen up riders so they ride and think quicker, and are therefore more competitive. It is an opportunity not to be missed”.

Fielding on Fire

Harrison Fielding (Poole Wheelers) was undeterred after an asthma attack forced him to abandon the Bournemouth Arrow 10 mile time trial. The youngster dashed across to Castle Coombe and took first place in the Easter Classic. It was Fielding’s third win on the road this season He won the first round of the Ray Martin Memorial league at Portsmouth on Wednesday evening after winning at Thruxton the previous week. Fielding explained “My doctor says the virus I had in the winter has aggravated my childhood asthma, so I have two inhalers now. I shot over to Castle Coombe after the time trial, its my third road race win this year, hopefully there is plenty more to come”

Poole Wheelers promising junior, Harrison Fielding, won his first ever road race on the Thruxton circuit. The Corfe Mullen youngster has been racing on the track all winter and his fitness showed in the 17 mile race. A few riders had tried to escape the bunch but the race was altogether as they entered the last lap. Fielding was clearly the strongest and was happy to wait for the sprint finish which he won comfortably. “My race plan worked exactly how I wanted it to, coming out of the final chicane I was on the front and just put the hammer down” he said. The first year junior has a packed schedule, with races on the road and track every weekend through till August.

Gary Dighton (Poole Wheelers) triumphed in the “Round the Harbour” time trial. Dighton clocked a speedy, 1.02.57 for the 27 mile rolling course, giving him a winning margin of over two minutes on team mate Andy Buddle, (1.05.09). Paul Jones (BJW) is off form and had to settle for 3rd with 1.06.26.

Meanwhile Julian Thacker (VC ST Raphael) finished a clear winner in the CC Weymouth 22 mile event on the Moreton circuit. Thacker recorded 54.02, a clear 2 minutes quicker than first-timer, Brian Keightley (56.03).

Matt Hill (UK Biking/Primera) did well to finish on the podium at the National XC mountain bike series in Nottingham. Racing in the sport category at the Sherwood Pines venue, Hill took second place after a close battle with Matt Gee (Metaltek). In the veterans race Mark Chadbourne (ridebike.co.uk) finished 4th, having been delayed with mechanical problems. Team mate Roland Tilley was also out of luck, finishing in 31st after crashing heavily on the opening lap.
Richard Horton (BJW) made a spectacular debut in Multi-Sport, winning the national junior Duathlon title in his first race. Horton finished in an impressive 3rd place in the Elite championships at Loughborough. Recording 54.27 for the 5krun-20km bike-5km run, Horton now looks certain to be selected for the European Championships. The talented Winton-Based cyclist has won several Road Races in the last few years but now intends to concentrate on Duathlon. As well as a new direction, Horton has a new team and will be racing for Primera this year.

Bournemouth’s first track league kicks off on April 17th at the Ensbury Park Velodrome.
The first two weeks will be full on racing, allowing riders to “acclimatise” to the track but will not carry league points. Bournemouth Cycling Centre urge riders to pre-register for the Raymond Brown sponsored league, full details can be found on the website. www.bournemouth.cc
Bob Jolliffe (New Forest CC) Reports........
For the second time this season triathlete Gary Lock was unable to knock Andy Rivett from top spot in a New Forest Cycling Club time trial.Rivett (Velo Club St Raphael) won the club’s 10 a fortnight ago and followed up with victory in last Sunday’s 16 on the Brockenhurst-Beaulieu-Lyndhurst circuit with a time of 38-22 to beat Lock into second place by 40 seconds.Third place went to Southampton University Road Club’s Alex Clayton with 39-16 while New Forest CC’s current club champion John Heffernan clocked 39-47 for fourth.VC St Raphael’s Martin Beale, recovering from a chest infection which has stalled the start of his season, finished with 39-51 for fifth.Topham top againThe previous morning at Copythorne, Adam Topham (High Wycombe CC) took his second win in seven days with a rapid 20-53 in Sotonia CC’s open 10 to beat Harry Bulstrode (Contre La Montre) into the runner-up position again, despite Bulstrode bettering his own course record of 21-49 by 34 seconds.Third place went to Contre La Montre’s James Gilfillan with 21-35, clubmate Andy Bryson completed the winning team with 21-48 and Contre’s Julian Jenkinson was fifth in a time of 21-56.Other NFCC timesClub 16 – Colin Humm 40-03, Ben Boardman 40-41, Stuart Peckham 41-48, Chris Hughes 42-06, Steve Roberts 43-12,Rob Brinsden 44-44, Nick Williams 45-07, Gary Plumb 45-13, Konnor Bracher-Walsh 45-27, David Wilson 45-46, Richard Rajski 45-53, Phil Underwood 46-45, Chris Grant and Stuart Grace (GA Cycles) 47-31, Tom Smith (Soton Univ RC) 48-19, Chris Mills 53-44. Sotonia CC 10 – Nick Tattersall 26-46, Bob Jolliffe 29-45, Martin Balk 29-50.Join the chain gangClub coach Barry Wootton is starting the first of what he hopes will be regular chain gang rides from Thursday.
Over to Barry who says now the evenings are getting lighter and the training becomes more intense he wants to start the training rides on Thursday evenings, to slot in between Tuesday night time trials and weekend racing / long rides.
“The rides will involve a 15 minute warm up followed by an hour of group riding at speed. The rules of the chain gang are harsh but fair. If you’re dropped it is up to you to find your own way home, if you crash, are ill or have a serious mechanical the group will stop.“There are, however ways in which different abilities are catered for in a chain gang, the stronger riders will take longer turns at the front. Depending on the groups we have I would think that the training rides will be running at around 20mph and in a month or so towards 25mph. If numbers are high we will split into smaller groups so that we are not a hazard to other road users. In such cases we will try and match the fitness of riders as best as possible.“We have practiced this drill a number of times on the Saturday endurance rides and those who ride on the track are well experienced. I propose to run training rides on Thursday March 29 and Thursday, April 5. I would also appreciate riders who are experienced at riding in pace lines to join in and improve the quality of the group with their experience. On those two rides we will practice the drills for riding in single and double pace lines so that from April 12 we can ride hard. The first week I propose an 1830 start from Brockenhurst, the second 1845 and from April 12 onwards 1900. “These rides will require a high level of discipline so please read below what is expected of you. “What to bring:“Road bike. Riding on tri bars and being late on the brakes will not be appreciated by other riders. Remember you are responsible for your safety and those around you.“Tubes / pump / multi tool. If you puncture, hard luck. You are responsible for your own repairs. “Mobile phone. If you have a serious problem please call ride leader. If you drop off please text ride leader so we don’t have to turn back fearing the worst.“Lights / reflective clothing. We will be out near dusk on the early rides.“Money, some rides may finish at local pubs.“Drink / energy food.“Dos and Don’ts”
“Be aware that everything you do has a knock-on effect on everyone behind and beside you. If you brake out of turn this will have a concertina effect and disrupt the whole group.“Never half wheel. When you hit the front, keep the pace consistent, if climbing keep the effort consistent.“When you come through for your turn and move over to the recovering line, do so smoothly and close to the rider you are taking over from. Don’t leave them with a massive gap.“Don’t leave gaps. If you are struggling to close a gap, wave the rider behind you through.“Don’t nail yourself trying to do super-hard turns if the pace is above what you are capable of or you know you are tiring. If you start to get dropped, the group will have to slow down to look after you, or in some cases you will be dropped. Or you may be able to follow the group whilst you recover.“Show your respect for other cyclists and the drivers with whom we share the road. Remember we represent cycling in the New Forest and want to enhance the reputation of cyclists not hinder it.“If you need to spit, makes sure you’re at the back of the line.
Will Stephenson (Primera-Specialized)gives his view from the bunch at the Cadence Junior Road Race.
At the start it was crazy as in a junior race everyone wants to be at the front because there is a lot more attacking an harsher changes of speed than in a senior race. Everyone was jostling for position but I managed to get up there.
A break of 5 went early on and stayed away for the race gaining about 3mins at one point. At about half way 2 riders slipped of the front and got a gap. I and 2 others bridged up to them and worked well, catching the break which now had a lead of about a minute an a half.
Unfortunately going through a bend the rider in front suddenly veered wide and his skewer went in my front wheel, buckling it quite badly. I managed to slacken off the break to its widest and that was just enough for it not to rub.
After another lap or so another much larger group joined our lead group and it grew in size from about 12 to 30. With such a large group I stayed near the front, responding to attacks and going with them.
With a lap to go Tao went the off the front gaining a gap quickly. With a too large group only a few of us were putting effort into the chase, the rest just sat up and took it easy. Dibben went off the front and got another big gap. On the final hill I went early, following a few other riders. We got a gap and the remaining group were strung out behind. We were all racing for 4th now. It was a long drawn out drag race like sprint from a few hundred meters out. I managed to get 7th, not quite catching 6th although our wheels were overlapping on the line and I was gaining. I was pleased with my performance in the first national road series round, especially after a hard week. I am looking forward to the next one where I hopefully will be able to improve.

Entries are wanted for the EDCA 27km Time Trial on 15th April. Entries should go to Ros Spencer of Poole Wheelers (13 ALVERTON AVE, DORSET BH15 2QF) and not as listed in the CTT handbook. Bryce Dyer(VC ST Raphael) won last year, clocking 37.10. Closing date for the event on the Gallows Hill circuit is Tuesday 3rd April.

Poole Wheelers 27km TT

Pat Dunn (cc Weymouth) opened his account for the season, with a clear win in the Poole Wheelers 27km TT. Run on the Gallows Hill-Worgret Heath circuit, the event was the first of 6 in an Inter-club hardriders competition. Dunn, with 38.06 was nearly a minute clear of second placed man, Steve Birtwistle (PW) 39.04.

Promising Junior, Harrison Fielding (PW) has spent the winter riding the track at Calshot and has plenty of speed in the legs. His time of 39.24 was good enough for third place, edging out teammate Leighton Girling by just 1 second.

The Gallows Hill circuit has a little of everything, country lanes, wider main roads, a few lumps and a long drag up to the chequered board that never seems to come. Thirty three riders signed on and the the bright sunshine and ever so gentle breeze had thoughts turning to spring.

It was lucky thirteen for Stuart Bowers (Hargroves Cycles) at the National Cyclo-Cross Championships. Bowers battled his way to thirteenth place and helped his team win the National Elite Title at Chantry Park, Ipswich. The Ensbury Park-based rider backed up New Champion Ian Field and third place Jody Crawforth to claim the team medals. It was a satisfying result for Bowers, pressure of work has restricted his racing programme this year. Broadstone’s Luke Gray (Baboco) struggled to retain his under 23 crown. Gray crashed inside the first minute of the race after being hit from behind and was forced into the pits to change bikes. A gallant chase saw him claw his way up to fourth place, but that was as good as it got. Gray returned to his base in Belgium with the good news that he has been selected for the GB team for the world championships at the end of the month. Wessex league leader Mike Cotty (Wheelbase/Cannondale) has been in good form but could only manage 22nd place.Speaking to "E D" Cotty said,"It was a tough day, i was a little under par on what i'd hoped for. It was a powerman's course, super fast with no technical. The lead up to the race was a bit more stressful than normal, not just because it's a big race but because my girlfriend was in hospital for an operation on Wednesday. All seemed ok but she was readmitted on Friday in a lot of pain. I thought i would be able to race ok, no excuses but maybe the mental stress scrubbed a little bit of the top end needed to be there. I am dissapointed but racing is racing and life is life"

Harrison Fielding (Poole Wheelers) continues to impress in the Calshot track league. Wins in the 1km TT, and the Points race confirm the Corfe Mullen youngsters promise. Fielding also grabbed 2nd place in both the sprint and the Scratch race.

Darren Kenny & Barney Storey have both been putting in quality training at Newport track ahead of the Para-Cycling world championships. Storey is from Corfe Mullen and is still a member of Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers despite now living in Manchester.

Kenny lives in Verwood and still has links with his first club, Bournemouth Arrow.

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers winter reliability trial series continues this Sunday with the 75 mile event. The 75 includes Okeford Hill, this year climbed from the Turnworth side and the even steeper St Johns, which takes the riders up to Shaftesbury. The HQ is at Merley Community centre and refreshments are available. The first riders will set off at 09:00.

Don’t forget this Monday’s Bournemouth Cycling Centre Meeting, 7.30pm at Hotel Collingwood. Alan McRae, Facility & Development manager at the track said “We will summarise the progress so far, plans for 2012 beyond just the track and call for involvement from across the local cycling community.
At present the Centre is run "by cyclists for cyclists" but we need help to maintain that enviable position.”

Local Cycling News

New Forest CCs promising junior, Hugo Walters continues to impress. Riding in the latest round of the Calshot winter track league, Walters won the U16 scratch race and is another local worth watching. Walters has spent the summer road racing and riding time trials and aged 15 is an exciting prospect. The New Forest youngster received a special award at the recent prize presentation as club junior champion.

Also at Calshot, Harrison Fielding (Poole Wheelers) won the U16 1km TT and the point’s race. Another talented 15 year old, Fielding recently spent time at the Newport Velodrome in Wales, at the invitation of British Cycling. Racing continues at the Calshot track every Sunday till February, with a two week Christmas break.

Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers winter reliability trial series is proving a real success story. The series has been going for over 30 years and the numbers of riders is on the increase. One hundred & twenty nine cyclists set out on the latest trial, the 100km event. Run mostly on small country lanes, the courses prove a real test of fitness and navigation skills. The next ride in the series will be the 75 mile event on the 15th January, widely regarded as the toughest of the 4 trial series.

Poole Wheelers will host round 9 of the Wessex Cyclo-Cross League on Sunday December 18th. The 4km course on the Sika trail in Wareham forest has a bit of everything. Organiser, Dave Wade says “It’s a great course, it will be challenging but also great fun” There will be a shortened version for U12s and youth riders. All riders will be eligible for the top prize; A one night’s stay for two at the 5 star Kemps Country House Hotel. All proceeds will go to the Rob Jefferies young riders fund. Popular local cyclist, Jefferies was tragically killed earlier this year whilst out training.

Harrison Fielding "Field of Dreams"

Harrison Fielding’s rapid improvement over the summer has made more than a few people sit up and take notice. The fifteen year old from Corfe Mullen joined the Poole Wheelers back in June and is helping to breathe new life into the sport in Dorset. Whether it’s riding in the Bunch at Moreton, racing against the clock in club time trials or on the new Bournemouth track, Fielding enjoys it all. Club coach, Graham Hurst, has arranged for Harrison to attend two weekends of regional racing at Newport Velodrome in Wales.(Nov 12th & 19th) Organised by British Cycling, the weekends are invitation only; a mark of how far fielding has come.

“E D” grabbed a few words with the rising young star on top of a windswept Whiteways Hill high up in the Purbeck Hills. Fielding had just finished in 6th place in the final round of the Inter-club hill climb. We started off by talking about the future, what did he want to achieve in cycling? “My ambition is to be a professional cyclist but if that does not happen then I would be very happy to be involved in a Premier Calendar team or even a personal trainer” After just a few months in the sport, Harrison looked comfortable in the peloton at the Moreton Road race series, I wondered how he found it, was he nervous? Did he enjoy it? “ I absolutely loved the Moreton races, I was a bit nervous riding in a bunch the first time around but the second and third time I felt really at home, taking turns on the front and then the big sprint at the finish!”

Which discipline does he prefer, road? Track, Time trials, / MTB? “I like it all to be honest. If I could I would try to be the best in all but that isn’t possible. I like doing TTs and road racing over track but when I get on the track I forget everything else and just enjoy what I am doing and then start to love it! But the moment I get back on my road bike I definitely prefer riding on the road.

Harrison is home educated, studying English, Maths, Science, ICT, General Studies & Geography, “I know it’s not a lot (sounds like a lot to E D) but they are the only options I had because of lack of facilities at home. What about other sports? “I do a bit of everything to be honest, most outdoor sports, rock climbing, kayaking and I like fishing during the winter months, when I can’t get out on the bike”. Fielding was a national age group champion in Tae Kwon Do but a broken ankle in training ended his ambitions “I started training again but I didn’t have what I had before so I decided to quit”
Since a kid he loved being out and about on his bike, “We lived in Wareham and we used to do a 7 mile ride around the forest on Sundays.” Tae Kwon Do took up most of his time till the broken ankle forced a rethink; “I got a job in a bike shop in Poole in 2010 and in my first week I got a road bike. It was then that the fire started again inside me” I did a couple of sportives and just some leisure cycling, going out on my own for 30-40 miles on a Sunday. My mum was always encouraging me to join a club, so I got in contact with the Poole Wheelers and it just went from there”. Mum and all the family provide great support “ I ride out to the club time trials but need a lift for other events” Harrison refers to his family as “Rent-a- Crowd, you can’t miss them at races” he laughs. He does appreciate the support, “I really like relaxing with the family around the fire after a couple of hard days training”

Now that the season has ended what are his plans for the winter? “Well I plan to keep it steady until January, doing 12-14 hours a week. Then really start to pick it up in the new year, doing specific speed and sprint training. I plan on doing more road training than time trial as I would like to do British Cycling events next year and try to get noticed”. What about heroes? Does he have any?
“Mark Cavendish and Sir Chris Hoy, but most of all Lance Armstrong. I just think what they have all done so far in their careers is just amazing. Especially Armstrong, I believe if it was not for his books I wouldn’t be where I am now.
The wind on top of Whiteways was getting stronger, it was time to go, a few last words? “Yes, a massive thank you to my club coach, Graham Hurst, my family who turn out to all my events and everyone who has given me advice and believe that I could go somewhere. I want to be a professional Cyclist but if that does not come I will be happy doing whatever I do. Dreams can come true but it does not always happen”

There is no doubt he can apply himself but he has a lot to learn and as yet, has achieved little.Chasing dreams? Perhaps, but if you cannot chase your dreams at 15 when can you? The optimism of youth takes us back and at the same time moves us forward. It inspires us all. Good luck to Fielding, he will need it, along with resilience and self- belief, essential tools for sport & life maybe. Ten years ago I spoke to a nervous Daniel Lloyd on the eve of his departure to France. Lloyd also chased a dream, not blindly but with determination and purpose, why not Fielding? Why not any youngster who dares to dream.
