Swindon RC LVRC Road Race
Roland Tilley (Ridebike.co.uk), grabbed 2nd in the Swindon RC LVRC Road Race, despite sickness in the days before the race. Tilley had been suffering from an upset stomach in the week, that saw him lose over a kilo in weight. The undulating 46 mile course at Little Somerford produced an attacking race that eventually saw a group of three go clear, chasing a lone leader. Tilley bridged across and the four worked well to distance the bunch and reel in the leader. The small group of five stayed away to contest the finale on Callow Hill, Nick Abrahams proved the stronger, pulling out 3 bike lengths on Tilley. Simon Williams (Hillingdon RC) took third place.
Tilley is really mixing his racing up. He rode the Bournemouth track league last week and will be off road next week in the Southern XC Championships.

Bournemouth Arrow/Raymond Brown Track League 1
The first round of the Raymond Brown track league was hailed a success, bright evening sunshine and fast aggressive racing christened the track. A programme of youth racing, scratch, points and elimination races kept coming till the sun went down. Poole Wheelers junior, Harrison Fielding has plenty of speed in his legs, a winter on the Calshot track has seen to that. Fielding was always at the head of affairs, looking to make the race, the impetuosity of youth getting the better of the tactician perhaps. “It hurts but it’s meant to” said the youngster.
He did not have it all his own way however, Will Stephenson (Primera/Specialized), also a junior, looks effortlessly strong, either chasing down or going for a “long one”. Sixth overall in the recent Junior Tour of the Mendips does not come without effort.
Jordan Wade (VC ST Raphael/Waite Contracts) is another youngster with the fight and determination required to win. The action was fast and thrilling! The small crowd of supporters and the” just curious” were certainly entertained. “Come along and watch for free” say the Bournemouth Cycling Centre.
The youngsters are the future but it is not all about them, experienced campaigner Roland Tilley (Ridebike.co.uk), raced on the old Winton Rec “D” shaped track. Twice a winner of the Southern area DIVS, Tilley, 48, spends his time racing mountain bikes but the track craft was evident and the fire still burns. “That Fielding was just a bit too fast for me tonight but its early days”
Despite the loss of the two dress rehearsal events to the rain, the officials soon found their feet and the operation will get slicker. The turnout was disappointing; no doubt the recent bad weather was a factor for those who had to travel. The locals, however, had no such excuse; the sun had been shining since early afternoon. Event promoter Alan McRae expects to double the numbers and momentum will undoubtedly build. McRae was happy with the first ever track meeting at the venue!
“It is all about speed. Tonight's racing was the fastest ever held in Bournemouth, it proved what a thrilling sport track cycling is and provided a shop window for local talent. These weekly meetings will really sharpen up riders so they ride and think quicker, and are therefore more competitive. It is an opportunity not to be missed”.

Terry Icke "Goes to the Well" to hang onto to Gary Dighton's wheel
Terry Icke & Gary Dighton (Poole Wheelers)won the VTTA (Wessex) Grand Prix Des Gentlemen 2-up 25. Icke & Dighton were clearly "up for it" with Dighton making his racing partner, 67 year old Icke suffer just to hold the wheel. The pair deserved the win and with only a few more races left, it was a timely result. The Poole Wheelers duo will both finish their seasons with the final round of the Rudy Project national circuit series,on the 15th October, promoted by their own club. Bryce Riglar (CC Weymouth)clocked 22.18 for 8th place in the Yeovil CC 10,
team mate Pat Dunn finished 6 secs back in 10th spot. Darren Lewis (Poole Wh) 23.05, Loiuise Burman (A3crg) 25.55 & Stuart Carrington, 26.31, were the other locals in action.
Will Stephenson (Bournemouth Arrow/Hotel Collingwood) came 5th in the Stockbridge Down Road Race. The tough 65 mile race was won by Ben Stockdale (Team Qoroz) who book-ended his year nicely having won the Perfs Pedal race way back in February.
Shaftsbury-Based Paul Hopkins (Merida) wrapped up the Veterans title in the final round of the British Mountain Bike XC series.
Held at Newnham Park Plymouth the tough, technical course put paid to the hopes of many including Winton’s Carol Tilley (Ridebike.co.uk) who crashed and was forced to withdraw with a shoulder injury.
Team Mates Roland Tilley, Mark Chadbourne & Steve Moors also struggled with the course and finished well down on Hopkins.
Kobi Joyce (Big Daddy/Avent) successfully defended his British BMX title at the National Championships in Cheddar, Somerset. 8 year old Joyce, who recently won the National Points series, seems to thrive on the pressure of the big events and secured the title in front of a 3,000 strong crowd. Having won all 4 qualifying rounds and the semi-final, the Branksome youngster led from the gun in the final. As well as his two titles, Joyce is now ranked No1 in his age group in the UK. After his winning ride Kobi was keen to thank his Team Manager, Martin Baxter. Baxter took on Kobi and his younger brother Ryder this year and "has helped us loads"

A Forest View, Bob Jolliffe writes..........
NEW Forest Cycling Club veteran all-rounder Martyn Dymond kicked off his cyclocross season with 35th place in a substantial field of 93 at Brighton on Sunday.Dymond, 48, who has been turning in some good time trial performances towards the latter part of the season, was the only Wessex League rider to make the journey east to the London League event promoted by Preston Park Youth Cycling Club at Happy Valley Park.Winner was VC Londres’ Jules Birks who finished 2-46 ahead of Jack Finch of VC Deal, who also picked up the junior award.New Forest CC 50-year-old veteran John Heffernan powered his way through the stiff southerly wind to win Sotonia CC’s club 10 on the Lyndhurst/Ipley Cross course on Sunday morning.Despite the tough breeze on the long outward leg to Leygreen, Heffernan nipped another eight seconds from his best reducing it to 23-21.Second place went to the promoting club’s Colin Yeates with 24-16, while New Forest’s Gary Lock took third with 24-35 from GA Cycles’ Richard Blake (24-54).
Mechanical problems put paid to the chances of a fast time by New Forest’s Terry Jefferies and VC St Raphael’s Martin Beale in the Wessex Veteran Time Trials Association Grand Prix des Gentlemen 25 organised by Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers near Wool in Dorset.Jefferies calculated they were on a 58-minute ride when he looked around to find Beale had disappeared after exiting a roundabout at about 15 miles. However, after turning and making running repairs to Beale’s collapsing gear cassette, the pair still returned a time of 1-3-14. At the Mountbatten Centre in Alexandra Park, Portsmouth, New Forest CC’s crack juvenile Hugo Walters finished in the bunch in the 50 minutes plus two laps Elite/First and Second Category circuit race.Andy Betteridge and John Heffernan also finished in the main field in the Third and Fourth category race over 40 minutes plus two laps.Former New Forest CC juvenile Jon Dibben (Hargroves Cycles) from Totton was best British performer in the junior time trial taking eighth place, 48.04sec behind gold medallist, Denmark’s Mads Wurtz.Dibben finished the 126km junior road race in the main field in 34th position, just three seconds behind the small group containing winner Pierre-Henri Lecuisinier of France. (Dibben won Bronze in the mens 4km pursuit at the National Track Championships in Manchester this week with 4.34.201)
French Letter PT3
They tell me it is a fashionable problem for racing cyclists. I broke my collar bone in a Kermess race in Belgium on Saturday 17th September.
The race was at Ertvelde, 50 m 14 laps, for over 70s. I touched a wheel after coming out of a corner on the fifth lap. It was a concrete road, and although I managed to roll over to ease the fall the road was harder than me. Two other riders came off with me including one woman.
The surgeon at Ghent said "six weeks off the bike" The surgeon in France said "Ce n'est pas une grande chose." (It is not a big thing.) It will heal in three weeks. Obviously surgeons are better in France.
I was lying second on points in the over 70's classification in Belgium, but as I cannot finish the season I should end up third or fourth now.
As you can imagine there were a few problems being carted off to hospital from a bike race in a foreign country when you are on your own. One of the questions from the ambulance man was "Have you a woman?"
There were three English lads riding at Ertvelde, they and a friendly Dutchman rallied round sorted out my possesions, moved my car, picked me up from hospital, and put me up for the night.
Next day I drove gently the 260 km to my flat in France with one arm.
Now I am trussed up like a chicken ready for the oven, but the bone appears to healing and movement is returning.
After 71 years of being a serious cyclist apart from cracking a rib, this is the first time I have broken a bone.
I hope to be competing next season, but will see how it goes.
In Belgium they send a bill for the use of the ambulance. It has been known for riders to hide in a ditch after they came off to avoid having to go in the ambulance and pay.
Best wishes,
Trevor.

Sarah Storey (Horizon Fitness/Prendas Ciclismo) stormed to victory in the Blenheim Palace 20km Time Trial. Clearly enjoying the closed road circuit, Storey clocked 28.29, comfortably winning the ladies race and placing her 4th overall only two minutes down on Multi -National Champion Michael Hutchinson. Prizes were presented by the Duke of Marlborough in the grounds of the historic palace.

The Bournemouth Jubilee wheelers 2nd claim member has been selected for the Para-Cycling squad and is also in contention for the able bodied team.Storey told "E D" "It would be great to defend the two titles i won in 2010. Road racing is something i have worked hard at,to try to expose myself to as many different race scenarios as possible, but its a tricky event, so i just have to get stuck in and see what happens"
Before traveling to Denmark Story will also race in the British Time Trial Championships. New Forest based Julia Shaw will start favourite for the Women’s Title. Bradley Wiggins (Team Sky Procycling) will look to defend his title from last year.
Experienced roadman/sprinter Roland Tilley (ridebike.co.uk) won the Fareham Wheelers LVRC Autumn Road Race on the Portsdown Hill circuit overlooking Portsmouth Harbour. After 5 second places Tilley was pleased to get his first win of the season. The 64 mile race came down to a sprint between 7 riders who had broken away on the steep climb. Tilley won comfortably from Paul Andres (TMG HORIZON).
Next up for the Ridebike.co.uk rider, will be the final round of the Southern area MTB series at Pippingford in West Sussex.Tilley has a ton of experience on the road but these days prefers the rough stuff!

The event comprises 5 stages over 3 days and is open to riders aged 16-18 years. Stage 1 on Saturday morning will be a 4.5 mile TT followed by a 45 mile road race in the afternoon. Sunday starts with a circuit race, stage 4 in the afternoon is a rolling 57 mile road stage. The 62 mile "queen" stage on Bank Holiday Monday includes the 5 mile climb of Tumble Mountain in the Brecon Becons.
It seems some help is needed with marshals for the Premier calendar race being held on Sunday on a Wilton – Fovant Down – Broadchalke circuit. See the website at http://www.twiningstour.com/. A great opportunity to see the top British domestic Pro's up close in the best cycle race to be held in this area for some years!
There will be a corporate challenge first thing in the morning and then in the afternoon the Premier Calendar road race where we will have the country's best domestic professional riders in action with the BC podium truck, Hugh Porter commentating etc. The event will be covered on SKY TV also. Volunteers will be provided with lunch and a nice Twinings "goodie bag" created especially for the volunteers. If there’s any chance that you, or anyone you know, could help for a few hours on Sunday, could you phone or email me as a matter of urgency please. Cheers Gerry Gray 01202 849144 / 0777 552 4890

Local Cycling News
Jay Eastwood (Hargroves Cycles) won the final round of the Moreton village series in fine style. Eastwood had already wrapped up the overall, easily defending the title he won last year with 7 victories in the 13 race series. Training on the track has sharpened the speed of the Hargroves rider. Fifty one starters lined up for the final race, once again blessed with bright sunshine.
The fast, flat circuit is made for sprinters and when the scratch group brought the race together the odds on Eastwood shortened. Steve Dring (Echelon-Rotor) had a dig on the bell lap but was not allowed to get far.
Roland Tilley (ridebike.co.uk) & Gregg Shrosbree (Merida) tried hard but were resigned to the minor placings. Organiser Peter Washington adds a nice touch to the final race each year; free entry and free tea and cakes post race put a smile on everyone’s face and race sponsors, Alyson France Solicitors, provided bidons and mussettes.
A co-operative approach to this year’s racing, with riders marshalling at least one event has proved a success. Peter is stepping down next year but is keen for the series to continue. This year saw 600 riders sign on for the 13 races; £600 was raised for the St Johns ambulance and £390 for the Moreton Village hall.

James Gilfillan (Team Feat) has dominated the Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers open Time Trials this season.
The Poole based triathlete won the 50 mile test to add to the 25 mile crown he won last month. Gilfillans winning time of 1.49.55 was nearly 4 minutes clear of Tom Alliban (Revo Racing) with 1.53.11. Gary Dighton (Poole Wh), 1.54.22, secured third spot. Terry Icke and Richard Davidson backed up Dighton to win the team prize for the Poole club. The event incorporated the Wessex Veterans championship with Icke’s time of 1.56.36 giving him the title. Gilfillan is off to the French Alps next for the Alp D’Huez triathlon. The 110 km cycling stage includes the 21 hairpin bends of the famous Tour De France Mountain.
• Claire Day (Born to Bike) made the long journey to Norfolk to ride the East District CA 100 mile TT. Day has already won a team gold medal at the national Championships, three weeks ago. Things got even better for the Winton Based rider as she recorded a personal best time of 4.11.45. Meanwhile, around the clubs evening time trials are into the last few weeks. Colin Humm has won the New Forest CC 25 mile title. Gary Dighton & Terry Icke are battling it out for the Poole Wheelers championship and Nick Spencer looks to have secured the Bournemouth Jubilee best all-rounder title. Pete Wilson consistently performs for the Arrow, while John Chapman is the man to beat at the CC Weymouth events.
• Para-Cycling champion, Darren Kenny OBE has just returned from racing in Italy. Kenny was part of a Great Britain team riding a 2 day event in Brescia, east of Milan.
Points earned from racing this year will count towards selection for next years Paralympic games in London. Verwood based Kenny struggled in the road race but won the following days 15km Time Trial to take maximum points.
Next up will be the World Road Championships in Denmark in September.
